Jar Cannon is a Ballista in Elden Ring. The Jar Cannon does not scale with any stats, and is a good Weapon for a ranged combat option. This weapon deals high damage, but users must be tactful with positioning and aim due to its slow reload speed.
Jar cannon which uses explosives to fire greatbolts. Deals great damage but is slow to reload.
Experimental firearm brought to the assault on Volcano Manor, where it was discovered that no one knew how to use it.
Where to Find Jar Cannon in Elden Ring
The Jar Cannon weapon can be found at the following location:
- Dropped by the boss Demi-Human Queen Margot at the end of Volcano Cave north of Mt. Gelmir. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Jar Cannon Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Kick
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Jar Cannon can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- Ammunition: Any type of Greatbolt, such as Ballista Bolt, Bone Ballista Bolt, Explosive Greatbolt, Lightning Greatbolt.
- The Jar Cannon has no scaling with any stat
- The Jar Cannon does 672 physical damage at +10
- Must be two-handed to fire. This also means you effectively only need 23 Strength and 12 Dexterity to fire it.
- Sell Value:
500
- The Jar Cannon's projectile attack benefits from the +10% damage of the Arrow's Sting Talisman, the +10% damage of the Ritual Sword Talisman, and the range bonus of the Arrow's Reach Talisman. It can also be increased by the Lord of Blood's Exultation and the White Mask, which can be easily activated using Seppuku.
- The Jar Cannon projectile attack does not count as a charge attack, therefore the Spiked Cracked Tear and Axe Talisman do not benefit it in any way.
- You can skip the long post-firing animation by using the recoil to push you backward off a ledge. If your character falls at least from a waist-high drop, the entire post-firing animation is skipped, allowing you to reload and fire immediately. If done optimally, you can fire twice in the same time it takes to fire once normally.
- For the Jar Cannon you only need 23 Strength to 2 Hand it and Shoot with it altho the Ballista is fine. Golden Vow and Flame Grant Me Strength does also affect and increase the Damage further on with Regular Bolts from Golden Vow, and Flame Grant me Strength enhances the Explosive Bolts as they are considered Fire dmg-type.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.

Best Jar Cannon Buffs
Use these Buffs to maximize the performance of the Jar Cannon weapon. Note that increases in attack power are multiplicative unless stated otherwise.
Jar Cannon | Buff Description | Notes |

Arrow's Reach Talisman | Increases Range | Your great bolts will fly straighter for longer, allowing for both longer range and easier to aim shots. |
Blue Dancer Charm | +0%-11% Attack Power | The minimum weight of both the cannon and the charm (15.9) will grant you 11% attack power bonus, but that bonus decreases as your Equip Load goes up. |
Flame Grant Me Strength | +20% Attack Power (+15% PvP) | Lasts 30 seconds. |
Lord of Blood's Exultation | +20% Attack Power | Lasts 20 seconds when a nearby player or enemy is inflicted with blood loss. |

Ritual Sword Talisman | +10% Attack Power | Must be at full health. |

If your invading limgrave, and you find a host that has hidden on that inaccessible ledge on the cliff behind the starter cave, this with explosive greatbolts has a good chance of knocking them off.

I still love this thing's weapon description. Someone made this thing, gave it to the soldiers, but never told them how to use it. That's hilarious.

I know this is supposed to be more of a tool for long-ranges than an actual all-uses weapon but i really wish i could use this in bossfights effectively.

This weapon should have 100% used your different crafted jars are optional ammo. Missed opportunity.

This weapon appears to be based on a medieval depiction of a weapon that may or may not have existed. Medieval depictions themselves are not reliable sources of information without detailed descriptions along side them and this weapon lacks such descriptions. Never the less Royal Armouries had one reconstructed to test and found that the weapon was less powerful than many bows and crossbows. Increasing the charge to try and make it more powerful only resulted in the destruction of the projectile.

I wish you could shoot this one-handed like the Bloodborne cannon

It's not good in pve but in pvp it is incredible at long range bullying.
- Anonymous
There are two things that could be done to make this and the Hand ballista more usable. Either faster shooting and reload animation, or make it act like a crossbow by splitting the animations to to separate parts allowing for shooting and reloading at different times.

The Elden Beast behaves much more passively if you confront it from long range, as it tends to use its runnings-away moves more often when battled in melee.
As such, this weapon in particular is good at god-slaying, and very little else.

Just a reminder that Roundable Hold’s lower rooms have crates full of cannonballs for much larger cannons. Can’t wait for the over powered DLC version of the jar cannon that doubles as a great hammer.
- Anonymous
They should add a matchlock Arquebus gun in the DLC that is just a weaker but faster reloading Jar Cannon, they had those in the 1400s. And while we're at it why not a matchlock pistol that takes regular bolts instead of great bolts.
Or just a hand cannon which they had in the 1300s.

"Experimental firearm brought to the assault on Volcano Manor, where it was discovered that no one knew how to use it." is probably the most blatant example of straight up comedy ive ever seen in an item description.

So I'm confused, does the fact that it doesn't scale with player level mean I can upgrade it to max and still invade people at level 11?

Great weapon overall, but useless in PvP when players are lagging.
- Anonymous
Two questions:
1. Would a ballista-type weapon be good at fighting DragonLord Placcidusaxophone?
2. If so, this or hand ballista?

Use this weapon and mimic tear against malenia but roll before you use it
- Anonymous
Consider sticking with Hand Ballista which only requires regular smithing stones and gets to 600 at +25. Jar cannon is 624 at +9 assuming you don’t want to burn a Somber for +10. Not worth the extra damage for the addition weight 15 vs only 10 for the Hand Ballista.
- Anonymous
Ok but why didn’t we get an absurdly large knight enemy who wields these. I want cathedral knight head butt into jar cannon
- Anonymous
Is this worth the somber smithing stones to get it to +10? specifically is it worth using up a somber ancient dragon smithing stone?
I have plenty of somber stones but it's obvious there aren't going to be that many somber ancient dragon stones in a single playthrough. So worth it? or not?

Have your mimic use ONLY this against Melania. It stuns her every time, allowing a critical. She wont target the mimic as long as you land the crit aftet each stun

Equip explosive great bolts and jar cannon. Invade at Haligtree. Profit.

This is good game design for invaders. So many hosts run away (which wastes everyone's time). This plus the concealing veil forces them to advance like they're supposed to. Without this invasions would last 4 times as long.

Nice to see Terry Pratchet also had a hand in this game.

I don't understand why people call this thing the "cowardly invader" weapon. If invaders wanted to fight you from range using cheesy tactics, they'd use spells. If they want to fight you up close using cheesy tactics, they'd use RoB or spam dual blood naginata running R1 or moonveil something. Invaders that fight from extremely long range aren't cheesy, they're annoying at worst and impressive or funny at best. This cannon is so cool and unique compared to all other options. Unlike the weapons I just mentioned, the cannon's drawbacks are no joke and force you to use it intelligently. But they're not so severe that it becomes unviable. I've only been invaded once by someone who used this exclusively and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. They jumped us in carian manor with a super long-range shot to knock us off an edge, but they missed. From that point, they'd try to jumpscare us as we walked around corners and at the tops of stairs or elevators. I'm not sure what they were hoping for cuz they knew it wouldn't one-shot us and they barely ever got the chance to shoot at us while we were distracted by enemies. It was pretty entertaining though. I think they ended up crashing out right as the odds turned against us so I'm really sad we never got to see how that resolved, but shoutout to whoever that was.

Is anyone having issues with this weapon missing easy shots when locked on?
Like, you're locked on an enemy standing still, a few metters away from you, but when you shoot the bolt goes to the right and hits the wall...
I've been using this weapon a lot, and I keep seeing this happening from time to time. It's like if the character decides to just ignore the lock on and shoots somewhere else.

Tip for anyone using this. Try not to be directly over edges of cliffs and mountains when using this. Sometimes the recoil of the cannon will send you back and then forward of the edge of the cliff (like you clipped through it and it repositions you directly in front of the edge having you fall to your death.)
- Anonymous
It should be mentioned that lightning greatbolts fired with this travel extremly far in a straight line before they start dropping.

Am I the only one who wants to make a Transformers 5 Megatron build using this, and the Sword of Milos?
Some tips on how I use this badass weapon, in case it hasn't been mentioned yet:
This cannon will blast enemies backwards if they are small to mid sized (men, dogs, heralds, imps, etc)
You can use this cannon to blast enemies off of perches and roofs from afar, hopefully causing them to fall to their deaths.
In addition, often times when an enemy falls from their camping spot their AI will become confused and they will be an easy target for you to then drop down and target them safely from behind while they are standing and blankly looking at a wall now, after aggro has worn off.
There are many enemies I have knocked to their deaths using this cannon.

Gotta love how they designed the handles on this thing so that your character is obviously holding it like an invisible greatsword. Now you can't unsee it.

So happy this is in the game. Amazing weapon. Great for dealing with invaders who cower behind strong enemies or in crowds

Just found out something intriguing, Jar cannon does full dmg without consuming ammo, while horseback riding. however the weapon wont fire but will result in the player Jabbing the fat end of the cannon at each side. so incase you are fighting horseback, don't be afraid to use this as a back-up.

I thought this would use cracked pot items as amo. Kinda disappointed. Still looks cool though

This page says that you can use the Blue Dancer's Charm to increase attack power, but the Jar Cannon does not scale.
The Blue Dancer's Charm wiki page says it only affects physical scaling.
Which one is true?
