Jar Cannon is a Ballista in Elden Ring. The Jar Cannon does not scale with any stats, and is a good Weapon for a ranged combat option. This weapon deals high damage, but users must be tactful with positioning and aim due to its slow reload speed.

Jar cannon which uses explosives to fire greatbolts. Deals great damage but is slow to reload.

Experimental firearm brought to the assault on Volcano Manor, where it was discovered that no one knew how to use it.

Elden Ring Jar Cannon Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Kick
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • Jar Cannon can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
  • Ammunition: Any type of Greatbolt, such as Ballista Bolt, Bone Ballista Bolt, Explosive Greatbolt, Lightning Greatbolt.
  • The Jar Cannon has no scaling with any stat
  • The Jar Cannon does 672 physical damage at +10
  • Must be two-handed to fire. This also means you effectively only need 23 Strength and 12 Dexterity to fire it.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 500
  • The Jar Cannon's projectile attack benefits from the +10% damage of the Arrow's Sting Talisman, the +10% damage of the Ritual Sword Talisman, and the range bonus of the Arrow's Reach Talisman. It can also be increased by the Lord of Blood's Exultation and the White Mask, which can be easily activated using Seppuku.
  • The Jar Cannon projectile attack does not count as a charge attack, therefore the Spiked Cracked Tear and Axe Talisman do not benefit it in any way.
  • You can skip the long post-firing animation by using the recoil to push you backwards off a ledge. If your character falls at least from a waist high drop, the entire post-firing animation is skipped, allowing you to reload and fire immediately. If done optimally, you can fire twice in the same time it takes to fire once normally.
  • For the Jar Cannon you only need 25 or 26 Strength to 2 Hand it and Shoot with it altho the Ballista is fine. Golden Vow and Flame Grant Me Strength does also affect and increase the Damage further on with Regular Bolts from Golden Vow , and Flame Grant me Strength enhances the Explosive Bolts as they are considered Fire dmg-type )

Upgrade this to +10 and bring it with you when you face the Elden Beast. Don't bother with melee. You'll thank me later.

when you bring a gun to a knife fight but everyone is too busy trying to figure out what soap is and how not to die of typhoid to know what this strange "trigger" you keep referring to is

I wish the companion jar talisman, alexander's shard talisman, and jar helmet stacked with this weapon. It would make pot only builds extremely fun.

This is good game design for invaders. So many hosts run away (which wastes everyone's time). This plus the concealing veil forces them to advance like they're supposed to. Without this invasions would last 4 times as long.

Nice to see Terry Pratchet also had a hand in this game.

I don't understand why people call this thing the "cowardly invader" weapon. If invaders wanted to fight you from range using cheesy tactics, they'd use spells. If they want to fight you up close using cheesy tactics, they'd use RoB or spam dual blood naginata running R1 or moonveil something. Invaders that fight from extremely long range aren't cheesy, they're annoying at worst and impressive or funny at best. This cannon is so cool and unique compared to all other options. Unlike the weapons I just mentioned, the cannon's drawbacks are no joke and force you to use it intelligently. But they're not so severe that it becomes unviable. I've only been invaded once by someone who used this exclusively and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. They jumped us in carian manor with a super long-range shot to knock us off an edge, but they missed. From that point, they'd try to jumpscare us as we walked around corners and at the tops of stairs or elevators. I'm not sure what they were hoping for cuz they knew it wouldn't one-shot us and they barely ever got the chance to shoot at us while we were distracted by enemies. It was pretty entertaining though. I think they ended up crashing out right as the odds turned against us so I'm really sad we never got to see how that resolved, but shoutout to whoever that was.

Is anyone having issues with this weapon missing easy shots when locked on?
Like, you're locked on an enemy standing still, a few metters away from you, but when you shoot the bolt goes to the right and hits the wall...

I've been using this weapon a lot, and I keep seeing this happening from time to time. It's like if the character decides to just ignore the lock on and shoots somewhere else.

anyone know the strength requirement to wield it since ur just gonna be twohanding anyways? like the bare minimum

Tip for anyone using this. Try not to be directly over edges of cliffs and mountains when using this. Sometimes the recoil of the cannon will send you back and then forward of the edge of the cliff (like you clipped through it and it repositions you directly in front of the edge having you fall to your death.)

It should be mentioned that lightning greatbolts fired with this travel extremly far in a straight line before they start dropping.

                        • Some tips on how I use this badass weapon, in case it hasn't been mentioned yet:

This cannon will blast enemies backwards if they are small to mid sized (men, dogs, heralds, imps, etc)
You can use this cannon to blast enemies off of perches and roofs from afar, hopefully causing them to fall to their deaths.
In addition, often times when an enemy falls from their camping spot their AI will become confused and they will be an easy target for you to then drop down and target them safely from behind while they are standing and blankly looking at a wall now, after aggro has worn off.

There are many enemies I have knocked to their deaths using this cannon.

Gotta love how they designed the handles on this thing so that your character is obviously holding it like an invisible greatsword. Now you can't unsee it.

So happy this is in the game. Amazing weapon. Great for dealing with invaders who cower behind strong enemies or in crowds

Just found out something intriguing, Jar cannon does full dmg without consuming ammo, while horseback riding. however the weapon wont fire but will result in the player Jabbing the fat end of the cannon at each side. so incase you are fighting horseback, don't be afraid to use this as a back-up.

One of the greatest things ever created. Goofy and gimmicky enough to be a meme, but just enough actual firepower to be a threat.

This page says that you can use the Blue Dancer's Charm to increase attack power, but the Jar Cannon does not scale.
The Blue Dancer's Charm wiki page says it only affects physical scaling.
                                    Which one is true?

Ahh the "I'm a loser invader whose too scared to fight up close" weapon. Funny how as soon as invaders who use this weapon have to actually fight, me and my phantombros kill them instantly with my trusty Rivers of Blood.

Everybody speaking of killing afk farmers while I just want a f**king hand cannon. Best used with explosive greatbolt, not practical at all, but feels so good

Its hilarious every time to one shot a low level enemy and watch their body fly 30 feet. Such an entertaining weapon

                                          • Anonymous

Ah yes. Give a weapon to the players which seems fun and then make it complatly nonunsable because of the 80 million years reload animation after every shot and you cant skip it. Typical fromsoft, thank you.

Take this thing to the bottom of the elevator before the great bridge in farum azula and turn the bridge full of birds into a host shooting gallery

One of the funniest descriptions of any weapon in the game. So none of the soldiers were taught how to use it correctly before the big siege? lmao

THERE IS A WAR GOING ON BETWEEN AFK'ERS AND INVADERS. USE THIS CANNON TO CLEAN OUT ALL THE AFK RATS FROM BUILDINGS, CLIFFS, AND ROOFS. GLORY TO THE BLOODY AND RECUSANTS!!!!

So does the jar cannon make normal bolts explode too? If so does that mean using explosive bolts increases the damage or radius?

I'm just wondering because I love the hand ballista for the fact I can use normal bolts to penetrate and deal higher damage, and switch to explosive bolts if enemies are in a group. So I was wondering if the jar cannon is ALWAYS explosive

                                                    • Anonymous

"Must be two-handed to fire. This also means you effectively only need 23 Strength and 8 Dexterity to wield it"
I really appreciate listen the actual str requirement, but dex is not modified by two handing.

                                                      • Anonymous

Im having difficulty finding an answer so ill ask here. Which Bolts should i use? i have this Weapon as an Invasion Tool, mostly to Deal with afk Hosts on Rooftops are whatever. But im not sure which is better for Invasions, Explosive or Lightning Greatbolts?

                                                        • Though the jar cannon's damage does not scale with any stat, failing to meet the str requirement will cause it to deal reduced damage like any other weapon.

                                                          • Anonymous

We need to start a petition to make this shoot jars instead! Lower the damage of jars if need be, but this could make the jar build cooler!

                                                            • There is no point in meeting the full STR requirement since you HAVE TO hold it with 2 hands to fire much like a bow so the minimum STR required is *effectively* 23. as such can be pretty easily wielded at Lvl 1 if you want. Godrick Great Rune, Starscourge Talisman, then Radgagons Scar/Soreseal +13/15; Physick Flask can be used to save talisman slots if you wish as STR Knot ( gives +10 str) and the rune is 15 on it's own. It's also fun to do low level invasions with.

                                                              • Anonymous

Currently running this with minimum stats on a high Endurance build. At +6 currently and this thing absolutely slaps. Also went out of my way to get the two arrow talismans, making this thing even scarier. I've walked into Godrick (+3 at the time), Radahn, & Rennala with 20/20 regular & explosive bolts. I went through probably half my bolts each time and managed to kill each boss with ease (no human co-op summons for distraction either). Hell, I 4-shot Red Wolf of Radagon and showed that dirty dog what's up. Biggest drawback is getting punished during the long post-fire "reload" animation. That's where the heavy armor comes in ;)

Maybe not a meta build, maybe not the easiest way to cheese every boss (especially the faster ones), but goddamn if it ain't fun.

                                                                • Anonymous

ballistas should have had their own ash of war, something like iron flesh, boosting defense and poise at the expense of movement speed, lasting until you fire one shot

                                                                  • Anonymous

They should have let you load the pots into it to fire them for more damage and let it scale with the jar talisman

                                                                    • Anonymous

You can cancel the long reload animation by falling backwards off a ledge from the guns recoil (can be a small ledge like a railing or so)

                                                                      • Anonymous

Keep in mind it needs to be 2 handed to fire so I actually dont think you get anything from having the full 34 str req. I could be wrong but there's zero scaling on this weapon so it shouldnt change the damage at all, so it bascially has a 23 str req.

                                                                        • Anonymous

This thing absolutely slaps for bullying in PVP, like the Millwood Greatbow in DS3. Can't dodge an Explosive Greatarrow fired at your feet, and since the stance is fixed until you release, it's hard to predict when you're going to shoot. Immensely satisfying for flinging Hosts, Furled Fingers, and Bloody Fingers off of edges.
Recommend stocking up on Explosive Great Bolts from the merchant in Gelmir, located on the ascent after defeating Grafted Scion.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Strangely however I was seeing a 1.3% increase in damage while using the Shard of Alexander.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

And despite having like 80 int i only have 30 mind so FP is a bit tight at times. Started carrying this thing around and it helps save FP quite nicely for me. Would recommend as a backup to carry around if you are a weirdo caster with a little strength like me and want to save up your FP for the bigger threats, but still take things on at a range.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

You cannot cancel the reload by any means I'm aware of outside of taking damage...Which both NPCs and PCs will likely do during the downtime.

THAT BEING SAID, shooting this thing is really effing cool. Headshots are particularly lethal and every shot will cause almost all enemies to either get knocked over or stumble. On horseback you cannot fire but you just beat enemies with the butt of the cannon which is hilarious. If you really want to make a statement, this is your ranged weapon.

I know it says 34 Strength is the requirement, but since it needs to be 2-handed and that cuts down about a third of that, what would the "real" requirement be? I'm aware of how the math is supposed to work, it's just that 34 is a weird number to crunch that out on and I'm not sure if the game rounds up or down, lol.

While you can't fire it while on horseback, you can still bonk enemies with the bottom of the jar as an attack. It does enough damage to kill fodder enemies, which isn't great, but fun that you can do that.

Here's hoping they change it in the future, with DLC or something. Not that this thing doesn't already do insane damage by itself, but it could so much more fun. At least THE ROUND has a ranged weapon as well to finish up the cosplay.
