Jar Cannon is a Ballista in Elden Ring. The Jar Cannon does not scale with any stats, and is a good Weapon for a ranged combat option. This weapon deals high damage, but users must be tactful with positioning and aim due to its slow reload speed.

Jar cannon which uses explosives to fire greatbolts. Deals great damage but is slow to reload.

Experimental firearm brought to the assault on Volcano Manor, where it was discovered that no one knew how to use it.

Where to Find Jar Cannon in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Jar Cannon Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Kick
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • Jar Cannon can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
  • Ammunition: Any type of Greatbolt, such as Ballista Bolt, Bone Ballista Bolt, Explosive Greatbolt, Lightning Greatbolt.
  • The Jar Cannon has no scaling with any stat
  • The Jar Cannon does 672 physical damage at +10
  • Must be two-handed to fire. This also means you effectively only need 23 Strength and 12 Dexterity to fire it.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 500
  • The Jar Cannon's projectile attack benefits from the +10% damage of the Arrow's Sting Talisman, the +10% damage of the Ritual Sword Talisman, and the range bonus of the Arrow's Reach Talisman. It can also be increased by the Lord of Blood's Exultation and the White Mask, which can be easily activated using Seppuku.
  • Golden Vow and Flame Grant Me Strength also increase the damage of bolts, with the latter enhancing Explosive Bolts more as they include fire damage.
  • The Jar Cannon projectile attack does not count as a charge attack, therefore the Spiked Cracked Tear and Axe Talisman do not benefit it in any way.
  • You can skip the long post-firing animation by using the recoil to push you backward off a ledge. If your character falls at least from a waist-high drop, the entire post-firing animation is skipped, allowing you to reload and fire immediately. If done optimally, you can fire twice in the same time it takes to fire once normally.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
  • Like most ranged weapons, leveling Dexterity can marginally improve the draw speed & projectile velocity of the Jar Cannon.

Greatbows are awesome but with this, u can spend some stat to Endurance instead on your STR focused build, sadly u missed the Radahn's Rain and Rain of Arrows, but look you don't need to farm that Golem Arrow at least, Lightning Greatbolt is purchasable

i have nothing to really add except that the last sentence of the description is unintentionally hilarious

One of only a few items I would consider absolutely essential if you’re going online — this, or the Hand Ballista if you can’t wield it. Whether you’re a host, a co-oper, or an invader, it’s just too effective and irreplaceable a tool against your fellow Tarnished to leave at home. Bring your explosive and lightning greatbolts.

              • Anonymous

The tarnished must be a natural genius considering they immediately know how to use it the moment they pick it up.

                • N’ overleveled phantom come crawlin’ out the back door, 90% hp missin’. Lula May’s baby boy. He looks up at me, he says ‘Host. I cant feel muh 1900 hp!’

Imagine you are in a sword duel. You have inflicted a serious wound on your opponent and you are about to finish him off. But then he runs away, grabs this thing and says, "Parry this you filthy casual!"

Combine this with a samurai build to become a canonically accurate Sengoku samurai wielding an oversized gun. Kinda hope that we get to see more early gunpowder weapons in the DLC, like a matchlock.

The melee attack on horse is actually punching a lot. At +10 in ng+1,the charged r2 makes 752 damage on the trolls behind warmaster shack, and has quite some reach. I wish we could use it that way on foot too, it would be pretty fun

                        • Anonymous

I miss the times when this was popular. But nowadays everyone is using Greatbows with Golem Arrows, because they are just superior in almost every way.

If your invading limgrave, and you find a host that has hidden on that inaccessible ledge on the cliff behind the starter cave, this with explosive greatbolts has a good chance of knocking them off.

This with Lightning Greatbolts, Concealing Veil, and new players coming in from the summer sale equals lots of funny blast off ledge kills.

I still love this thing's weapon description. Someone made this thing, gave it to the soldiers, but never told them how to use it. That's hilarious.

I know this is supposed to be more of a tool for long-ranges than an actual all-uses weapon but i really wish i could use this in bossfights effectively.

This weapon appears to be based on a medieval depiction of a weapon that may or may not have existed. Medieval depictions themselves are not reliable sources of information without detailed descriptions along side them and this weapon lacks such descriptions. Never the less Royal Armouries had one reconstructed to test and found that the weapon was less powerful than many bows and crossbows. Increasing the charge to try and make it more powerful only resulted in the destruction of the projectile.

Aww, man...I respected to str to do a jar warrior build, and you're telling me I can't bazooka people with volcano pots? Lame.

There are two things that could be done to make this and the Hand ballista more usable. Either faster shooting and reload animation, or make it act like a crossbow by splitting the animations to to separate parts allowing for shooting and reloading at different times.

The Elden Beast behaves much more passively if you confront it from long range, as it tends to use its runnings-away moves more often when battled in melee.
As such, this weapon in particular is good at god-slaying, and very little else.

Just a reminder that Roundable Hold’s lower rooms have crates full of cannonballs for much larger cannons. Can’t wait for the over powered DLC version of the jar cannon that doubles as a great hammer.

                                            • Anonymous

They should add a matchlock Arquebus gun in the DLC that is just a weaker but faster reloading Jar Cannon, they had those in the 1400s. And while we're at it why not a matchlock pistol that takes regular bolts instead of great bolts.

Or just a hand cannon which they had in the 1300s.

                                                • "Experimental firearm brought to the assault on Volcano Manor, where it was discovered that no one knew how to use it." is probably the most blatant example of straight up comedy ive ever seen in an item description.

So I'm confused, does the fact that it doesn't scale with player level mean I can upgrade it to max and still invade people at level 11?

                                                      Two questions:

                                                      1. Would a ballista-type weapon be good at fighting DragonLord Placcidusaxophone?
                                                      2. If so, this or hand ballista?

                                                      • Anonymous

Consider sticking with Hand Ballista which only requires regular smithing stones and gets to 600 at +25. Jar cannon is 624 at +9 assuming you don’t want to burn a Somber for +10. Not worth the extra damage for the addition weight 15 vs only 10 for the Hand Ballista.

                                                        • Anonymous

Ok but why didn’t we get an absurdly large knight enemy who wields these. I want cathedral knight head butt into jar cannon

                                                          • Anonymous

Is this worth the somber smithing stones to get it to +10? specifically is it worth using up a somber ancient dragon smithing stone?

I have plenty of somber stones but it's obvious there aren't going to be that many somber ancient dragon stones in a single playthrough. So worth it? or not?

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

I don't understand why people call this thing the "cowardly invader" weapon. If invaders wanted to fight you from range using cheesy tactics, they'd use spells. If they want to fight you up close using cheesy tactics, they'd use RoB or spam dual blood naginata running R1 or moonveil something. Invaders that fight from extremely long range aren't cheesy, they're annoying at worst and impressive or funny at best. This cannon is so cool and unique compared to all other options. Unlike the weapons I just mentioned, the cannon's drawbacks are no joke and force you to use it intelligently. But they're not so severe that it becomes unviable. I've only been invaded once by someone who used this exclusively and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. They jumped us in carian manor with a super long-range shot to knock us off an edge, but they missed. From that point, they'd try to jumpscare us as we walked around corners and at the tops of stairs or elevators. I'm not sure what they were hoping for cuz they knew it wouldn't one-shot us and they barely ever got the chance to shoot at us while we were distracted by enemies. It was pretty entertaining though. I think they ended up crashing out right as the odds turned against us so I'm really sad we never got to see how that resolved, but shoutout to whoever that was.
