Katanas are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Katanas specializes in mid-range combat and are capable of inflicting slash and thrust attacks, as well as the Hemorrhage Status Effect in many cases, which can deal significant damage. Many players choose this weapon type for its unique moveset.
Katanas can be modified by a number of Ashes of War to change their Skills or Damage Type, so play around with them and see what you like as you acquire more.
NOTE: As of Patch 1.08, Katanas poise damage has been reduced only on PVP.

There's one small inaccuracy on the page. Nagakiba default skill is Unsheathe, not Piercing Fang, which is just an ash of war set on the weapon, when you aquire it.

2 int katanas, 2 int flails. KATANA has 6 letters, FLAIL has 5 letters. 8 katanas divided by 2 is 4. DLC confirmed for 6/5/24 mark your calendars

I didn't really know that katanas were OP on launch or anything, I just thought it would be funny so I am currently powerstancing through the game because that's just fun, I use Serpent bone +14 and rivers of blood +6, it's just fun for me shitpost my way through that game

Why is the moveset so bad? Also why are 2/3 of these useless? Wtf?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Katanas were broken at release. Way too fast, too much dmg + bleed. Unsheathe broken. But now that they've received absolutely no changes to their base moveset they're awful.
They're fine you goddamn schizos.
- Anonymous
A pretty unremarkable weapon class. I don't really understand how they became so popular.
- Anonymous
PvEwise, Bad 1HR1 chain, the first two R1s are almost vertical swings.
The 2HR1 chain is straight up mostly vertical, which makes fighting groups inadequate.
The powerstanced moveset is horrendous. I'm not really sure why anyone would powerstance these. The L1 chain is very slow. After checking the frame data, they are almost as slow as greataxes when it comes to L1. Except that greataxes actually do the damage and poise damage to compensate.
If you need bleed. Use greases early game on a straight sword and then infuse with blood once you can.

I'm gonna go on a bit of rant that will probably get some hate but that's ok. I've been using katanas in souls game since dark souls 1. In OG I used the washing pole, its two handed R2 was broken (in a good way) letting you stay far away from your enemy.....deceptively far away. I power stanced man slayers in ds2. (when poison was at its best, except in the sunken king dlc) I made a savage skill/blood tinge Chikage build in bloodborne. That was probably my favorite. The lost variant hit for a ridiculous amount of damage if you stacked bloodtinge gems. In dark souls 3, I found onikiri and ubadachi and never looked back. Event though its weapon art was a bit wonky, it had its time and place. Especially in pvp. And this brings me to Elden Ring. I have been trying to find my perfect katana build for almost 500 hours. I think I finally did it. I currently main hand the hand of Melania and off hand Rivers of blood. I've never cared too much for river's weapon art so it just augments the blood build up lost by maining HoM. Plus, it has the sexy-ass sheathe. Hand of Melania with the shard of Alexander, rotten curved sword talisman and millicents prosthesis makes me feel like a whirlwind of death. Literally getting stronger with every subsequent hit. Katanas seem controversial now.....which is strange....just use what YOU like and forget everyone else....but they have become somewhat ubiquitous so there will inherently be some hate attached with that fact. But overall I think they will always be a staple in these games and there have been many, many cool variations of them throughout From Software's history. Special shout out to the Frayed Blade. God....that weapon art was sick.

I know it's not fair to the people using them, but I've started to cringe everytime I see a phantom pass by with one of these or Bloodhound's Fang. They're just so overused.
- Anonymous
Maybe they could add a Destend Death Katana for the DLC something like the Mortal Blade from Sekiro
- Anonymous
Say what you will about their reputation in PvP, but katanas are generally excellent weapons that absolutely deserve to see as much usage as they do. They look cool, feel great to use, and have a very good balance of attributes that make for an extremely versatile class of weapon. I like them a lot, and it's fine if you don't.

My weapon idea: Somber katana with 100% physical damage that scales with DEX and ARC, unique weapon art in the style of unsheathe that does a bloodflame slash with ashina cross animation (like morgott) with light attack and on strong attack a fast seppuku (without the buff) that makes a short ranged "nihil" that heavily damages you if you miss. And without the extended range like rivers of blood so it's not hated.

Is this just me or Hand of Malenia feels odd for not having Scarlet rot build up neither on its attacks nor during its skill?

Power stance move set and speed are terrible. The best option for PS is jump attack spam.
- Anonymous
what people dont know is that the serpentbone blade is actually super good, basically rivers of blood but with poison instead of bleed (literally the same weapon art)
it also has a two handed charge heavy attack that i Believe might be unique to that katana only. it also has a super high damage at max level that might or might almost outstrip the other katanas

Honestly, overrated weapon type. The ashes locked to katanas carry the class. Exception to the Nagakiba, which is colossal sized at medium speed.

you use katanas for the meta i use katanas to cosplay captain yami we are not the same

Relatively unremarkable weapon class. The only good one's are uchigatana, nagakiba and moonveil

I know that you can parry with Katanas by putting the Parry Ash of War onto the Uchigatana or Nagakiba; i just wish it was similar to the Katana parry of DS3

gimme a katana parry in a dlc and this will become my favorite weapon class

Running r2 is good. Semi fast r1s, bleed passively, l1s are okay. Kinda slower and more separated swings making them parry bait, use with caution against players 2h moveset bout the same as 1h. Unsheathe is a top tier AoW... 9/10 fun wep class

It’s been said before in a nicer way I know.
It’s time for a dedicated non-game space for PVPers. There is a time and a place for that but just not in game.
Hear me out.
The real dedicated pvpers are people who want ER to be Mortal Kombat with armour and swords. It’s not. And a game doesn’t have to have a winner and a loser. In fact that’s what makes a game a game and a sport a sport.
PVPers are why — in part — people don’t take games seriously as art or even as games. PVPers want Fortnite or fight club and not an engaging game. Great. Let them have it just not in the game.
The other day some 10 year old kid I invaded complained in a dm afterwards to me that I beat him with magic and madness. He was enraged. Imagine. I told him to go back to COD if he wants to beat up people with weapons.
Just at a game level imagine you were playing chess with a friend. Then a third person entered the room with a chess piece of their choice and started a fight with one of the pieces on the board, in the middle of game play. This is the same as PVP.
I do invasions. 4 out of 5 invasions are summons from some jacked PVPer begging you to fight them and show off their build or katana. 2 out of 3 of those are some staged scenario with a friend nearby or fake host in some rune farming operation.
Please, From, create a separate arena for pvp or fight club. They can already summon each other as duelists but god knows why they don’t and waste everyone’s time by summoning unknowing hunters and invaders to their fight club.
Rant complete! I feel better already.
** Note this is not an anti-pvp post. It is an anti pvp in the game post. I know some people have fun doing both, no doubt. That’s great.
I don’t interrupt your pvp by running into your pvp to assign both players side quests. So please stop running into my game with your fight clubs.

katanas are kinda just mid outside of their ashes of war. damage is pitiful, speed is alright, dual wield is way too slow but atleast they got style right?
rivers of blood: jetstream sam
moonveil + hand of malenia: vergil
i think i'm going to go with vergil
- Anonymous
Though we already know that From really love their katanas, but katanas in Elden Ring really look cool as F! Really want more katanas which U can use AOW on them but has the same unique moveset as Meteoric blade or Serpent bone blade.
- Anonymous
Katanas are kind of self nerfed. Everyone uses them so everyone knows how to deal with them. For the primary meta weapon of this fromsoft game they lack any of the teeth previous meta weapons had. In ds3 we had straight swords, (lothric straight sword) which were fairly unique in how you could use them. The skill ceiling was fairly high, the moveset could easily rollcatch & was generally a great all around choice for any build. In this game everyone uses katanas despite their incredibly inferior moveset. Its very hard to rollcatch with anything but a running r2 & even then good luck. Gone are the days of hosts in full onion armor doing nothing but running r1s with a washing pole. Nowadays i barely take katanas seriously. Moonveil is only dangerous when your connection is bad, hom & rob are both easy to bait out & outmaneuver. Yea these are powerful weapons but only because of their ashes. Im not saying katanas need a buff. No im simply advising you pick a different weapon. Try something else, & you just might win the next fight you have.

I'd be happy to see some kind of faith katana that can parry
- Anonymous
What kinda weapons do you guys want from up coming DLCs? I want more Dragonscale sized Katanas, the others are freakishly long, I want an infusable one for a proper Samurai cosplay.
- Anonymous
I wonder if the Odachi can be added as a katana or a curved greatsword
- Anonymous
As much as I hate going up against dual nagakibas and moonveil spammers over and over again, there's no denying katanas in this game are fantastic. There are 4 different R2 movesets in this class, 4 special skills and unsheathe aow is only available for katanas, all of this makes these weapons feel unique.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
so: what stats do i update to deal more damage aside arcane and does lowering my strength also lowers the damage i deal with a katana?
- Anonymous
Expect a point down if you use any one of these weapons. I think at least the most honorable is the STR based Meteoric Ore Blade for it's special R2, but even then, don't think anyone will like you if they see you with a katana in hand.

Hobby Samurai cosplayer here :)
I hope a DLC brings back Sir Alonne's Nagamaki. I mean on his trips to the Elden ring Universe he bought all the big pots for his castle. They are all around the roundtable area.
I know somebody in the Elden Ring universe made the tasty Nagamaki :)

Nakiba's skill is actually Unsheathe, not Piercing Fang. Piercing Fang is just the equipped ash of war when you receive the weapon in-game.

Ideas for Ashes of War for Katanas: 1. Frayed Blade from DS3's weapon art, with or w/out the dark applied, so a series of slashes followed be a sheathe again (stamps have multiple forms, why can't Unsheathe?)
2. Stance holds, like Square off. Holding the blade up like a samurai, while being able to move slowly, and follow up with one of two attacks, depending on input like usual. Again, swords and axes have this ability, so why not.
3. Just reimplement parry... that was solid.
- Anonymous
Idea: Make Katanas have a higher Critical Range, and remove bleed (except for bleed focused ones). Nerf damage and speed a little and there you have it, daggers that are a little bit slower but outperform them in range and damage.
- Anonymous
I like to roleplay as zoro from one piece, i always do that in every souls game, and katanas in this game r pretty good looking, meteoric blade and moonveil for the white/black look of them, and the dragonscale for the flashy effects, 10/10
I feel like the Wakizashi deserves an honory spot on the table to make comparisons easier.
There are more katanas than: thrusting swords, heavy thrusting swords, twinblades, flails, great spears, reapers, whips, claws, light bows, bows, great bows, crossbows, ballistae, and torches. There are an equal number of katanas and sacred seals. What did Fromsoft mean by this?
- Anonymous
I love how people who say katanas are overtuned just get thumbs down but no counterarguments. I wonder why
- Anonymous
We are so close to a more balanced game. All we need now is to nerf katanas and heavy thrusting swords and then the community shall rejoice.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I hope katanas in this game get nerfed to the ground, from a PvE perspective. Even an uchigatana is too powerful.
- Anonymous
It’s says a lot about From’s balancing when two of the most powerful and most common weapons are katanas. I know they’re based out of Japan, but in other Souls games they’ve just been powerful, not OP like Elden Ring.

DLC better bring over One Mind and Sakura Dance from Sekiro.

I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to put the parry ash of war on the uchi or naga.

it sucks that the damage numbers and status effects are what makes these katanas 'good'. they could have done many unique things with the movesets and ashes of war. Personally the only katana that i like is the meteoric ore blade solely for the heavy attack. fromsoftware really could have done a lot more with these weapons as they are on the fewer side and i hate that these get bad rep. cool designs though.

The katana jumping heavy attack should've been like the tricked Chikage plunge attack and like the jump attack Tachibana Muneshige from Nioh does.

Fun fact: In real life katanas were entirely useless outside of Japan. It doesn't matter what anime you've been watching, it's physically impossible to make a real katana that can stand up to almost any other real weapon.
