Retaliates upon receiving a number of blows
![]() |
Law of Causality is an Incantation in Elden Ring. The Law of Causality spell serves as a counter-offensive after receiving multiple hits. Updated to Patch 1.07.
One of the incantations of the Golden Order fundamentalists.
One of the key fundamentals.
Manifests a small ring of causality within that allows the caster to
automatically retaliate upon receiving a certain number of blows.
The fundamentalists describe the Golden Order through the
powers of regression and causality. Causality is the pull between
meanings; that which links all things in a chain of relation.
Where to find Law of Causality
- Given by Gideon Ofnir after beating Mohg, Lord of Blood and asking about the cocoon in the boss arena.
- If not received from Gideon Ofnir, it can be purchased from Twin Maiden Husks after defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade.

Law of Causality Guide
- Golden Order Incantation
- 487 base holy attack that increases based on incant scaling
- Stamina cost: 20
- Deals holy damage
- Triggers after receiving five hits.
- The buff lasts for 120 seconds or until the explosion is triggered.
- Only damaging hits will trigger the explosion. Damage-over-time effects, self-inflicted damage, and completely blocked attacks don't count.
- Retaliates with a small area-of-effect explosion that can knock enemies back.
- Since this incantation only has Intelligence requirement, a pure Int build with less than 10 Faith, which excludes them from using most Sacred Seals, can still use this incantation by using Frenzied Flame Seal.
- NOTE: Since Patch 1.07 Duration has been extended from 60 to 120 seconds.

aka rejection but you need to take a bazillion damage to activate it
- Anonymous
The most reliable way I've found to proc this is to simply have a less than 100% negation shield. You'll take chip damage and it'll count as the hits needed to activate it. I used the palisade shield with cold shield crash to frost and bleed, while all block hits helped to proc the ability. Not great by any means, just ok.
- Anonymous
Let me break down to you why this spell is garbage.
Most endgame bosses and PvPers have damage outputs that can kill you in usually 3-4 hits. To activate the spell, you need to be hit 5 times...in rapid succession.
In other words, in order for this to trigger, you need to willingly let yourself be hit 5 times by the boss/player, and you will also need to have enough poise to drink an Estus during that, and since poise is **** in this game, that's going to have to be a very high number. Plus, as I just said, you need to essentially waste an Estus, which I don't think I need to tell you why that is not ideal.
And once you finally trigger it? It does a pitiful 310-340 damage, which is probably going to be equivalent to a single R1 from your regular weapon. But wait, there's more! It also does pure holy damage, and Maliketh and Radagon/EB, who are also both hard-hitting endgame bosses, have 80% holy resistance. Doing the math, you are now doing a whopping 62-68 damage per Law of Causality. All of that damage you took from these 2-shot happy bosses and all of that poise you invested in and that Estus you wasted amounted to 62 damage.
What this needs is a damage buff from 310-340 to possibly 700-760 and reduction of 5 hits required to 3. If that happens, then I could see it being a reasonable option against Malenia or some other late game bosses, but right now, you need to put in too much effort for too little damage.

Cast it before spamming prayerful strike and you'll be an unstoppable poise paladin

This with endure on a level 30 twink invasion build is hilarious... its just like OG dark souls with Karmic Justice

I’m pretty confused on how it activates. I’ve been testing it and it seems the number of hits will reset after 5 seconds. But I’ve had a few cases where it took 6 hits for whatever reason. So I’m leaning towards it take 5 CONSECUTIVE hits for it to activate and it will completely reset after 5 seconds if you don’t get hit, which kinda blows tbh. Or if it’s like a status effect where the number of hits drops down every few seconds. But I highly doubt the latter is the case. Decent spell. But I wouldn’t try to activate it on purpose though because in my experience it seems most of the time it’ll reset before I can actually get it to work. Best to just let it happen “naturally”
- Anonymous
So is this a body buff? Aura buff? Or a unique buff? I can’t test it rn because I have a long way to go before I can acquire this. But I’d imagine it’s a body buff, right?

Super underrated and underappreciated in pvp. The cast time isn't that long, it's cheap, and has a potential effect if used alongside a shield to make absorbing hits a bit easier to trigger it. Really punishes people who use stuff like rapiers or fists.

Could somebody confirm if this spell will cause the explosion from the damage done by fire's deadly sin?

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law?
- Anonymous
Does not seem to get an increase with incant scaling like what the wiki said. I've tried it on a character with 10 faith using Erdtree Seal(60) and Frenzied Flame Seal(177). Both dealt the same damage which is 457.

Has strange interactions with mainhand weapon buffs like Scholars armorment, RKR etc. Scholars upped the damage by 81 points, RkR doubled the damage of LoC without consuming the buff on the weapon itself.
- Anonymous
For some reason, if you use scholars armorment on your right hand weapon this does more damage, with a +0 diggers staff and 29 int, it did 566 dmg compared to 541 without.
- Anonymous
Usless info: Damage increases if a magic grease is used on the right hand weapon.
ie: 541 dmg with magic infused weapon, 561 with heavy infused + magic grease.

should be unpoisable at the very least, and do MASSIVE stance damage to bosses

Has anyone come across an enemy using a version of this that retaliates after every hit not after five ?
I think it was a silver tear at the furthest point north west from nokstella eternal city grace.
- Anonymous
Worthless in pvp, doesn't do enough poise damage to knock over or even stagger anyone with optimized poise and the damage is mid.
- Anonymous
Are either of the Nox duo able to cast a version of this that retaliates after every hit not five, like being hit by a light weapon not an explosion. ?
- Anonymous
This spell seems like it’s horribly bugged.
The damage doesn’t scale with incant scaling. An unleveled Erdtree Seal does the same damage as a +9 Golden Order Seal.
The GO Seal passive doesn’t increase its damage. Gold Mask doesn’t increase damage either.
Talismans and Crystal Tears CAN increase the damage. But sometimes it just straight up doesn’t work. Doesn’t get the damage boost half the time. When they do work, the damage is still pitiful so it’s not worth it at all.
Worst spell in the game
- Anonymous
Five hits to activate makes it more and more worthless for PVE the further into NG + playthroughs you go.
- Anonymous
damage should somewhat scale with what you were hit with to trigger it imo
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
FEXTRA please start adding damage formulas to your pages, or at least state whether spells scale with incant or not. You do with some, and not with others. Is this a flat-damage explosion? Or does it scale to incant? What's the damage based on? A few motion values and what they are multiplied by would go a long way to increasing the value of the wiki pages.
- Anonymous
It’s too cheap/long lasting to be bad... even on pure int. But the damage is pitiful even on 45/45. To be clear I’m specifically talking about pvp, I don’t think it’s much good in pve except against the really weak group enemies.
- Anonymous
Would be better if it procced based on how much damage you took instead of a number of hits tbh
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I actually found a way to make a pretty good use of it: shield crash. You have blocking frames while doing it, so you trigger last hit, stun the guy with your charge and blast him away. I've been doing around 800 dmg with magic carian knight shield and no talisman boosts - maybe not that high but god damn its so satisfying
- Anonymous
They finally did Karmatic Justice right.
Chip damage from blocked attacks give you ticks. So you could absorb all but 95% of damage and still get those ticks. The key is not to rely on the spell but have it as life insurance. Stick it on a hybrid shield build
- Anonymous
so since i did not see anyone addressing this, i will: this and law of regression's animation are one of the coolest i've seen in the entire game, idk if its just me, but seeing the character FLICKING both arms in perfect synchrony, and in perfect position, like two levers, is absolutely satisfying.
- Anonymous
Too inconsistent for pvp. Make it trigger after reaching a specific hp threshold like the branchsword talismans and then it'll be worth taking over other buff incants.

After 1.07, I just tested the duration and it seems to last 120 seconds now. 156 seconds with Old Lord's Talisman.
- Anonymous
From my counting it lasts 108 seconds. So i presume it lasts between 100-110 seconds now which is amazing! I loved this spell before now its even better!
Law of Causality seems fair and balanced
until you use it in PvP.
- Anonymous
Will this trigger if I use a shield with only partial physical block?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
The explosion always triggers after five hits. However, the charges decay over time. So this incantation works the best against fast enemies or groups of enemies. Some attacks like crystal burts can trigger the explosion immediately since there are more than five projectiles hitting you at once. This makes it nearly useless in pvp since it is rare for a player to attack fast enough to trigger the explosion yet too slow to dodge the explosion.
- Anonymous
I think I've figured out the issue with this spell, it's bugged. Deals the exact same damage on a +0 talisman compared to a +9. Highly doubt this is intentional.
- Anonymous
The number of hits here is wrong, on more powerful enemies it does proc on 5 but when testing on Gatefront soldiers it didn't even proc after 10 so this leads me to believe it is a flat damage amount instead.
- Anonymous
Lore should have this be 'the push of meanings" rather than "the pull of meanings." Pull is for Regression, because it is the pulling together of things into one. Push should then be for Causality, because to say that "A causes B" is to imply a billiards-like interaction where A "pushes" B through a linear temporal relationship. Probably a messed up translation.
- Anonymous
Spell needs to Triger off 2 hits and have damage multiplied 10x times. ok maybe 8
- Anonymous
the "get off my ass" spell that mages don't deserve. still fun in my holy spellblade tho. put that body buff slot to use.
- Anonymous
I don’t think it’s an accident the “ring of causality” looks like the eclipse. The eclipse as in the eclipse related to death blight, eclipse shotel and worn by mausoleum soldiers. Perhaps an eclipse bringing death blight is an inevitability due to causal factors just like Catch Flame is a prophecy of the Erdtree burning. I’m confident DLC will feature an eclipse with a death blight swamp.
- Anonymous
Im really curious what counts as a "hit" cause i was counting hits last time and i got hit 6 times with r1 and then wild strikes 4 hits until i died. The buff was still in me not triggering
- Anonymous
Definitely needs a damage buff. Tested it during duels, increasing int/faith from 30/30 to 50/50, and damage only went from around 200 to 340. Really not worth it considering how tricky it is to not die before actually triggering it...
- Anonymous
So yeah, i took 3 multiple hit lance charge combos and it did nothing, it just disappeared with no effect.
"This just works"

Appears to proc from vow of domination ash. Used vow of domination through stars of ruin taking only one or two bits of damage but it blew up as I was jumping at the mage lol I hadn’t taken damage before this so I’m confident it workes even through those i frames
- Anonymous
Funniest spell in the game. Yeah needs a major damage buff but it comes in handy if you use shields and have the spare spell slot. The damage hits for like 2-300 on most players with 50 fth, 31 int... makes me wonder if it scales solely off intelligence like orders blade scales solely on fth even with golden order seal
- Anonymous
Got guard broken and riposted at the same time this went off. Neither of us took damage.

I noticed if I cast this, then swap off my sacred seal it will never ever proc. If I swap the sacred seal back on it will be able to proc again. I don't think it remembers hits either, so if you took 4 hits and swapped the seal off and on you would need to take 5 more hits to actually trigger this.
- Anonymous
After extensive testing I have come to the conclusion that Berserk reference = good
- Anonymous
Persists through sitting at site of grace. meaning you could talisman/physik swap to apply and swap after casting.

Only last 60 seconds. It disappears if not triggered before then :(

The best use I've found for this is with a Colossal weapon with a good physical block. I've been using it with the Royal Greatsword which justifies the INT investment, but there are possibly better choices. Since the sword doesn't block all the damage, Causality ticks from blocking, so if you're dealing with something too quick to easily hit you just block, let Causality go off and flatten them, and follow up with the weapon whilst the target's down.
Possibly even better would be using the Icon Shield and a Great Stars with Prayerful Strike. Block with the 95% GS, let Causality proc, then Prayerful Strike to get all the HP back.

Does this deal damage based on your spell incant scaling? Karmic Justice has some REALLY weird rules when it came to dealing damage.
Quoted from the Dark Souls wiki -
"Spell strength is based off of the Magic Adjust stat of the weapon in your right hand at the time of detonation (not time of casting).""
Can anybody test this to see if it makes a difference?
- Anonymous
You don't have to kill ofnir to get it, you just need to go to the roundtable once of it is gone
- Anonymous
Why the hell does this require intelligence and why the hell do other incantations require intelligence?
- Anonymous
Good news everyone, you DONT need the faith 10 FTH with a seal to cast this. the dmg is the same whether you can wield the seal or not (and you can cast it)
- Anonymous
It is a shame that if it triggers as a result of something like a grab attack like the big hands or the iron maidens it will simply fail to trigger and you lose the buff
- Anonymous
Law of Casualty lasts 60 seconds before expiring. Timed it down myself with a stopwatch.
- Anonymous
So the damage on this is TERRIBLE. But it’s so satisfying it’s worth it. Stars of ruin will procc it and leave a mage wondering why he’s on the ground

Is the fact that this is awarded after telling Gideon about the theft of Miquella by Mohg a hint that that theft is precisely what caused Marika to rebel against the Golden Order and conspire against the Greater Will or is it just awarded random? Gideon talks about how the information given to him is the final piece in the puzzle...
- Anonymous
You can use this with Night Maiden's Mist to pop off. Idk what kind of situation you'd want to use that information in, but you can.

Okay from personal testing on a variety of tougher enemies using the golden order talisman with a spell buff of 335, Flock's Canvas talisman, and sacred scorpion charm, the damage this will do is bad.
Against the knight outside Cathedral of Dragon Communion it did around 450-500 damage. Against the cleanrot knight outside Prayer Room at Haligtree it did about 250 as they are rather resistant to holy damage. Against the Aulbinaurics at Mohg's place it did once again around 500.
In short the damage on this is really bad, and the range isn't great either.
It also doesn't immediately trigger upon being hit 5 times, there is a delay. Which for faster weapons is enough for a sixth hit or to dodge.
The only benefit it does have is that it does a rather good amount of poise damage. I'm not sure how much, I haven't yet tested it on bosses, but enough to at least constantly break the guard of most enemies.
I've tested other sacred seals to see if it was perhaps a weird interaction, and found no actual difference, only dealing less damage in line with the lesser spell buff and no inherent buff from Golden Order seal.
So yeah, either something is fundamently broken with the spell, or they really balanced it weirdly. I mean it still doesn't explain how Gideon can oneshot with it. Sure he's a boss, but he's doing regular player damage with the rest of his spells. At any rate it isn't really worth using.

Ahem, it isn't Journey 5, it is called "the first run somewhere between outskilling Gideon Ofnir in the Ringed City and finishing the game" - that's how I got it anyway

Use this in pvp with a shield that isnt 100% block. as long as you take damage at all 5 times itll go off. blocking with a 100% block shield will NOT work tho. You have to take at least 1 damage. (This does mean if someone is using weapons with elemental damage and you try blocking with 100% shield it will work, as your shield probably doesnt have 100% of any elemental resist so youll block the physical but not the elemental)
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if blocked attacks count towards this spell?
- Anonymous
You can self proc this with Night Maiden's Mist spell. Each pulse will count as 1 hit but the dot damage doesnt.

Takes 5 hits no matter the attack type. The only way this’ll trigger in pvp is if you get shredded by twinblades, malenia’s sword skill, or (maybe) getting hit by swarm of flies. Gotta test if partial blocks will trigger it ( <100% physical defense shields). If they do trigger, then this spell might have some use.
The intelligence requirement is incorrect. It takes 29 intelligence

After proc it triggers small explosion from self, dealing 404 damage.
In conclusion, SUCKS.

**** it's PVP use, i want to know it's lore use. I bet this does something similar to Law of Regression, just need to find where.
The most practical use for this incantation after receiving it from Gideon is walking directly over to the Roundtable's Site of Grace and dumping it straight into your storage box.
This will help by removing it from your selection of spells to memorize at a Site of Grace, which will speed up the process of choosing your spells a little bit.
