Hurls lightning spear before caster
![]() |
Lightning Spear is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Lightning Spear spell creates a lightning projectile and throws it forward. Gravel Stone Seal increases its damage. Updated to Patch 1.07.
One of the incantations of the capital's ancient dragon cult. Summons a lightning spear and hurls it before the caster.
Charging causes a lightning bolt to strike the point of impact.
Long ago, Godwyn the Golden defeated the ancient dragon Fortissax, and befriended his fallen foe — an event that gave rise to the ancient dragon cult in the capital.
Where to find Lightning Spear
Where to find Lightning Spear :
- Purchase from Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows after giving either the Dragon Cult Prayerbook which is dropped by a Leyndell Knight patrolling south of Artist's Shack.
Elden Ring Lightning Spear Guide
- Stamina Cost: 28
- Deals Lightning Damage, therefore is very useful against knight-type enemies/bosses.
- One of the Dragon Cult Incantations and is boosted by the Gravel Stone Seal
- Enemies seem to ignore this incantation in terms of dodging, meaning under most circumstances Lightning Spear will generally make a successful hit against the enemy. This applies to both charged and uncharged variation.
- Charging allows you to add small AOE to this single target spell. It also increase damage, range and poise damage.
- Charged spell is boosted by Godfrey Icon.
- NOTE: Since Patch 1.07 Attack Power when charged has been Increased

people like to complain about the disparity between lightning weapons and lightning incantations and how they don't synergize, but dex = cast speed, and this thing at high cast speed is absolutely gnarly

false, enemies do react to the spell. Monks and priestess in nokstella will 50% of times dodge this. Frenzy burst on the other hand hits them always.

Uncharged has exactly the damage you’d expect it to for your stats. But full charged is disappointing. You’d expect it to become ds3 sunlight spear with Godfrey icon but I think you get better dps spamming uncharged bolts. I want full charged to get better damage. Hyper armor once fully charged could’ve been interesting too.

The pvp arena damage for this needs to be debuffed a little I have very good lighting resistance and it can take me down in a few shots and the player love spamming this like it's the new years whether or not your in an ash of war or magic

This spell is very good. This one spell carried me all the way through my fight with malenia. This is some gourmet stuff.

They better give us a red version of this in any upcoming dlc or ima riot.

Go on son, lighting bolt that dragon. Make papa Gwyn proud.

This is hands down my favorite offensive incantation. It's fast, has good damage, low cost, and isn't resisted as much as fire and holy.
It really shines in pvp. Of course you won't hit any decent aware players but it's perfect for punishing players for using their flasks, running away, or using dragon breath incantations. Because of it's speed you can also throw it after roll dodging away from an opponent to keep pressure on them.

Lightning is unexpectedly strong against Smithing-Stone Miners and other rock-type enemies. Little more need be said.

I thought I saw something about the damage this does getting buffed in .07 but when I equipped it to see for myself the projectile felt horribly slow getting from caster to target. I don't remember it being like that and I used it for a good chunk of my game until I got bolt of gransax,
That is what makes me unsure, I don't know if this incantation only seems slow after using the ancient lightning spear weapon art for so long. I'm hoping anyone who has used this incantation a lot and preferably before the last two or three updates can confirm if it has been slowed down.

Pretty easy to dodge but its fun to use and does good damage also dual wield seals and now you ARE ZEUS

What is there not to love, I loved the spell in DS3 and even more so in Elden ring. FP is low to cast, damage gets better throughout the game, and can be charged. Godfrey Icon people! If you’re doing a dragon cult build, or any faith/hybrid, this incant is for you! Hasn’t left my build even in new game plus
- Anonymous
Has been in slot 1 of my faith build's icant inventory since the moment I got it and has stayed there. Wrecks from beginning to end game.

So the very highest I've gotten this little spear to go was 3,216 charged up(extended cast, scorpion charm, both incant talismans, cracked lightning tear, and golden vow) against a random mob (not sure about the targets resistance) but against a player Ive reached up to 1853. I've found that I can just dodge roll forward into an attack and light one of these bad boys off and the match is over. So I've been doing without bothering to buff so it will take two perfectly timed spears to kill a player dead. Still seem pretty broken, except now the biggest challenge comes from the shield and spear combo with the correct shield, lightning just can't put out. And seeing as I can just offer this spear to RoB during it's moveset or wait for the bloodhound to try and attack and just zap the bugger, these are simply not the meta anymore.

One of the few incants actually good in pvp.
Very good at punishing RoB users when they are locked in slashy-slash animation.
Effective against mages for ranged trading.
However, I've been having trouble hitting someone while they are in my face and hitting me. The slight stagger (even if I poise through the hit) makes the spear fly above their head.

in PvP, it's quite good as counter spell to deal with mages. not so good as offensive spell though, since anyone else will just dodge it.
- Anonymous
I consider myself pretty good at pvp. But the amount of times this has hit me is humbling. With fast cast its actually a very powerful incant. With slow cast it is less useful.
- Anonymous
This incantation is really good, it has quickly become my primary means of dealing damage after I unlocked it. It does very good damage, the FP cost is reasonable and most enemies will make no attempt at dodging it. The range is a little bit lower than than what the animation might suggest, but it doesn't take very long to get used to that. If you can get very close to the enemy, Catch Flame reigns supreme of course, but at medium range there is nothing with similar FP cost that comes close to the damage of Lightning Spear. You can unlock this fairly early as well, so if you're just starting any build that incorporates Faith, get this ASAP.

Man….souls just dosent feel the same without covenant farming.

The lighting spear is how I beat Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader and Malenia. At least for Malenia's first phase. 2nd phase I summoned Black Knife Tiche... Which I got from Alecto soooo
YES, Lighting spear for the win.

One of the most reliable Incantations in the whole game. If you are new to Faith build, go get this and Catch Flame ASAP.
- Anonymous
Best version of this spell from all souls games. Now we only need an ancient-dragon sunlight spear equivalent that is not tied to a dex weapon that requires no faith for some reason.
- Anonymous
The charged version turns you around on cast slower than it casts, so it'll miss if you're facing the wrong way when you start charging.
- Anonymous
The fact that npcs don't dodge this makes it super powerful in PVE. Combined with it's fast cast rate it is great. It's downfall is it's short range.

This destroys the banished knights in faram azula before they can even wind up their stormy spin to win.
Is it possible to get this spell without facing Margit? If yes, how do i do it? Can someone explain to me? I can't seem to access the other side.

The best overall incantation in the game. Also perfect punishing tool in pvp, especially when people use a dragon breath attack or sorceries.

Great damage to fp ratio and cast speed. chargeable so benefits from Godfrey's icon. Enemies aren't great at dealing with it. Range is medium and probably the only "con". Still highly useful. S-tier incantation.
- Anonymous
Out of all the Lighting Spear incantations, this seems to be the only one that you can throw instead of spiking it into the ground under you
- Anonymous
Most enemies just don't seem to be able to recognize this as a projectile, and don't dodge it. It's a great go-to in PVE.
- Anonymous
Kinda weird how virtually everything from Dark Souls has had its name changed for the Elden Ring equivalents (even weapons are called Armaments now), but Lightning Spear is still Lightning Spear.
- Anonymous
Would love if they add an upgraded version or frost lightning one in future DLC.

I love how useful this spell is, but it's a shame that it makes almost every other damage incantation completely useless. It's one of the only incants apart from Wrath of Gold that has both quick casting and high damage. Most of the others have a super long windup to do around the same damage as LS or less. It's never worth taking the risk on, say, one of the "attack from above" lightning/dragon spells when you could just roll away and toss a spear or roll toward and WOG.
I know it's hard to balance a game of this scope but they really dropped the ball on incantations. If they cut casting time in half or boosted the damage for most incants except LS and WOG then the others might not be so useless.
- Anonymous
It says something about how good this spell is that it more or less justifies upgrading a Gravel Stone Seal to +25, even though the other lightning damage spells range from "situational" to "why bother."
Ride around blasting dragons in the head like Zeus, it's great.
As per usual, extremely effective against enemies in plate armor.

How am I in NG+2 and just now finding out how good this incantation is
- Anonymous
This spell has extremely high poise break on it, even when quick cast. It’s really good for interrupting people.

Old faithful. I’ve beaten every boss in the game with this spell. It’s by far the best lightning incantation for pve besides ancient dragons lightning strike.. which is a shame because the other lightning incantations look cool.
I tested this spell (pre-patch) near dragon cathedral by casting on the banished knights fully charged from their back. With +10 dragon communion seal (off hand), 99 arcane and and 99 faith, I get 415 incant scaling and do 1713 damage. After equipping the two two incant talismans (as they stack) I do 1918 damage. Finally with Gravel Stone seal (+1) on right hand, I do 2209. And here's the kicker, on a rainy day with all the said equipment, I do 2430 damage!
best way to scale this spell is to have godfreys icon (for when you charge the lightning spear), lightning scorpion charm, flocks canvas talisman, shard of alexander (for main weapon Bolt of gransax. which gives you the upgraded version of the lightning spear called ancient dragon lightning spear. This weapon scales with godfreys icon, lightning scorpion charm, and shard of alexander.) i would scale faith to 65 dex to 40 and strength to 20 the rest of however many levels you wish to spend more of split among mind, vitality, and endurance. for your great rune i would go with morgots rune to gain 5 stat points in all attributes so your faith sits at 70 when your in your world and you have a arc rune popped. next i would set my wonderous physics potion to faith knot and lightning shrouding cracked tear. with all these active your faith should be sitting at 80 when in your world and 75 when in anothers world. to get extra dmg and be more tanky get golden vow and protection of the erdtree. golden vow will also increase your dmg output with lighting spear and bolt of gransax.

A shame that there is no upgrade; you get the best incantation BY FAR, in Liurnia, and after that there is nothing to look forward to for faith builds, apart from weapons which are mostly just greatswords. Every other incantation takes ages to cast for no reason, like why do you have to jump into the air to cast incants that cost more FP and do less damage? Sorcery gets all the buffs, and even if they buffed the other incantations, the weird jumping and cone aoe attacks will never come out fast enough to be useful in pvp or against faster pve enemies. Ridiculous that we couldn't just get a retextured soul greatsword that looks like Margits hammer, or the gold spears or knives. No Radagon Golden Order spears or lasers for some reason. Honestly feels like it was done on purpose.
- Anonymous
I can't prove it, but I swear the range gets slightly longer as you level up faith and / or your seal. When I first got it I felt like it was barely a few players lengths, now I'm +13 seal and 45 faith throwing hail Mary lightning bolts
- Anonymous
Does using the Wondrous Physick to increase holy damage or spell damage or lightning damage, which of these 3 will affect the damage of the lightning spear? It seems like the all would, or perhaps none of them do? I play a confessor

What is everyone talking about with "Nerfs". It hasn't changed. At all. No one on the rest of the internet has mentioned any nerfs that I can see. Would someone like to explain?
- Anonymous
Well fromsoft has once again needlessly nerfed the hell outta faith builds and buffed dex/int.. like why add this stuff into the game anymore? Enemies used to rarely dodge this now you're lucky to connect a hit with a turtle. These updates are killing me...
- Anonymous
Try and name an incantation which casts as fast, with similar damage, similar range and costs less than 18 fp? The closest ones I can think of are beast claw (smaller range and damage, but costs only 10 fp) and flame of frenzy (small range, but potentially more damage and costs 16 fp). These two spells, however, lack in range and are easily disrupted by terrain. For Lightning spear you can cast it quickly mounted or on foot, with great damage, great range and awesome projectile speed... Of course anyone who wants to be a mage will eventually have to sacrifice some hp flasks for more fp regen, and 18 fp is very fair, considering that there are few incantations that costs less and are practical. One very similar spell is the Frenzied Burst, with a higher cost (33 fp) but even greater reach and damage. The Frenzied Burst, however, seems to cost a bit too much fp to be so spammable. A good strategy it to lure an enemy with the burst until it get in range for the lightning.
The point is: this lightning boi may not have the best damage, nor the best range, but it is above average in almost every parameter and is definetely worth it, as it can be used in almost any situation.
- Anonymous
I don't know why anons are running around here claiming the fp cost on this was nerfed. It has ALWAYS cost 18fp, and lightning strike has always cost 21. Whoever changed the fp costs on the wiki page is messing with you.
- Anonymous
I used this incantation starting till about level 48, i can say its good for early game but every spell is good for early game. I dropped it due to it costing far to much FP and doing too little damage for blameflame orb. As of 1.03 They have additionally nerfed this skill so i would not recommend to build around this at all actually i'd advise against going faith at all this much later in the game.

Lightning spear.
When you charge it, it becomes a great lightning spear. Visual and damage wise
- Anonymous
I'm really hoping the lightning spear nerf was an accident because there is no reason this slightly above average spell needed an fp cost increase.
- Anonymous
Patch 1.03 appears to have massively reduced damage. I'm doing almost half what I was prior to the patch release.

After 100+ hours running a Faith/Arcane build, I must say this is the most utilitarian spell of them all. I have had fully charge cast hit above 1k damage and light cast will easily 1 shot trash mobs. Gives splash damage if enemies are close enough. Gets a damage boost in rain/water which is nice considering how often its raining in the overworld. Essentially if you are a Faith build, this is your "R1" move. Mix this with lightning gem buff in Wondrous Physick and is even viable for taking out bosses. I often forget to use other spells, the low FP and stamina cost, it's just so viable for everything.
On Torrent this also starts to trivialize the game, I have had the same success with Black Flame. You trot away from the enemy while charging the spell, then when its ready to release, quick turn towards the enemy and release the cast.
A big slow enemy, charge cast. A fast enemy, quick cast. Will catch people off guard in PvP if they get caught, and is a great follow up spell for harder hitting incantations.

It feels a little boring that a normal lightning spear is the best option to use at high level. Like, I'd be fine if it was a sunlight spear, great lightning spear, but it looks a little silly to throw a regular-sized one and hit for 1600 damage

Please tell me there is another version of this that maybe hits harder for more fp or something. I miss the giant lightning spear you could get in the other games.

Besides standing in water, if it's raining in your overworld, all enemies (and including you) get a reduction to lightning resistance and a buff to fire resistance.

How is this on a low faith build with high Arcane using the Dragon Communion Seal? Looking for an early-mid game spell to deal with individual enemies for a dragon build, as all the dragon incantations are more expensive attacks meant for groups of enemies or large foes/bosses.

Considering the fact that lightning incantations are part of dragon's powers now, does this means dragons are resistant to lightning in this game?

Through testing I’ve discovered there are actually 4 stages of the damage this can do depending on exactly how long you charge it.
You can have Fast animation, lowest damage
Fast animation, mid damage
Slow animation, mid damage
Slow animation, high damage
So if you charge it exactly to the point where it’s behind your head, you get an extra 100 damage or so and get the fast animation.
If you charge it a little slower than that, you get punished with the slow animation without the lightning strike and mid damage.
Holding it down does the highest damage with the slow animation.
Can officially confirm, even Black Knife Assassin boss in Deathtouch Catacombs do not even try to dodge it. No enemies in the game process it as an attack, and therefore will not try to dodge it. Easy hits on enemies that keep distance or otherwise are very evasive.
I’ve discovered through testing that there are actually 4 different outcomes for the lightning spear spell depending on how long you charge it.
First is fast animation, light damage
If you charge it exactly to the point where the lightning bolt is behind your head, you get fast animation with mid damage.
If you miss that window slightly by too long, you get punished with a slow animation and mid damage.
And if you charge it all the way you get high damage with the lightning strike and a slow animation

The best incantation. Fast casting speed, good damage, medium range, low faith requirement.
My favorite Miracle in all pf soulsborne its just perfect, its simple but not too simple, it has a mythological background in the real world, its usefull early and endgame amd it feels cool to use
