Lost Ashes of War is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Lost Ashes of War is a special item that can be exchanged to duplicate another Ash of War that you currently hold.
Empty ashes of war, devoid of any memories of battle.
Unable to apply any kind of affinity in their current state, but can be used by Smithing Master Hewg of the Roundtable Hold to recreate other ashes.
Thus does the copy pass into becoming the genuine article.

This item is not useless. Its just not necessary. It allows you to infuse multiple weapons with the same skill without having to go back to the grace and swap between them. It's a convenience item if you have one weapon skill that you really like.

A reference to Jean Baudrillard, like the false dragons of Aldia...
You're in the know, right?

it'd be better to leave these things in the lost and found bin tbh

Thought this was going to be useful to get trolls roar pre mountaintops by duplicating off trolls hammer. It makes sense that unique ashes can’t be duplicated but, annoyingly enough, it can’t duplicate normal ashes off weapons either.
There is literally no reason to use this item.

Can you later remove a duplicated ash of war from your inventory? Or will you have two of the same there forever?

Does duplication work for Ashes you find on quests like Rogier’s Rapier and Edgar’s Banished Knight Halberd?

There's an unlisted one in Leyndell slums' sewer tunnels (not Subterranean Shunning-Grounds). Past some rats and small hand enemies, at the end of a long straight otherwise empty tunnel that has the Lost Ashes of War and a wall-clung large hand enemy guarding it.
Anyone have a number of the total Lost Ash of War in the game?

So am I trippin or are these things next to pointless? It honestly makes me feel like at some point in development, putting ash on a weapon was supposed to be much bigger deal than it ended up being in the release version. Like the ashes were probably one time use, would get soulbound to a weapon and this could be used to have an extra copy in case you wanted to put it on another weapon.
Imo you are effectively hurting yourself by running two or more of the same ash, even on weapons you switch between. I think its way better to have different ashes ready for different situations. Honestly the only use I can think of is to have two of ash that buff the weapons themselves (determiantion, seppuku etc) for maximum possible damage meme builds or if you are a sweaty tryhard and just want to run bloodhound step on everything.

There's also one in Sage's Cave in one of two chests shortly after the entrance, after a 2nd illusory wall to the right after the first one

Another one in front of the huge door in leyndell from the outer wall phantom tree follow the path

"One can be found by the locked northeastern gate in Leyndell." It is the northwestern gate, not northeastern.
I think it would be a good idea if there was an option with the blacksmith to trade any skill with Lost Ashes of War. There are planet of skills I would never use them.

Shoutout to one of the, if not the most useless item in the game, since there is actually 0 reason to ever have 2 of the same ash of war on both weapons at the same time.

It looks like u can't dupe an ash of war u get from a player

Can I duplicate special Ashes of War like Bloodhound's Finesse?

There is one more in the early game! The isolated merchant at the isolated merchant shack in the west of the weeping peninsula South of limgrave sells one for 3k runes. Earliest one you can get.

One more lost ash of war not listed here is at the bottom of the first big pit in Sellia Hideaway (with the revanant)

There is another Lost Ashes (among other items) sold by the Isolated Merchant, downhill to the south from the Main Academy Gate grace.
Pass through the blue sign and by several packs of wolves.
Cost is 4000 runes.

Has anyone attempted to use these to copy ashes of war that are unique to a specific weapon, or is it just for the ashes in your inventory?

There is one located at the ruin strewn precipice also. After making your way up to the area with 2 harpies look at the ledge behind the wooden platform.

Question do these items carry over to NG+ as unused or used on the duplication you chosen? And is there any bell bearings for these cuz damn
- Anonymous
Can you use this to enchant both weapons when dual wielding? if you pick something like sacred blade on both.
- Anonymous
so...i'm not crazy right? these things are useless? like, if you want to use a skill, you can just take it off of one weapon and put it on the weapon you wanna use. and i can't think of a situation where you'd want a skill on multiple weapons. like, only if you wanted to use both weapons, but even then you can just...switch weapons and use the ability. the only thing this seems like it does is be somewhat convenient if you're too lazy to switch your **** around? or if you don't want to think about switching weapons? even then it's better to have the weapons you wield have multiple skills so that you're versatile so...yeah. wtf??? this entire subsystem is pointless.

It seems people either have not played the game yet, or don't understand how Ashes work.
You can move ashes between weapons freely, they don't use up and they don't get soulbound to a weapon.
You can do this at any Grace site as well as the smith.
You use this item to give yourself TWO of a specific Ash of War so you could have it on two weapons at the same time, without having to move it between them.
You can equip Ashes of War on the weapon without enhancing the weapon stats by selecting the correct option after equipping an Ash of War
You can unequip or move an Ash of War to another weapon at any time. Simply go to a weapon you want to unequip from.
You don't need to unequip Ashes of War to move them to another weapon, you can simply go to weapon you want them on, select them, and select yes when prompted "it's equipped on X weapon, do you want to unequip and move to this weapon".

So you can only get a finite amount of these things from each playthrough?

I like that you have to really make your choices carefully. Not like other games when you get to freely swap out special abilities like you're changing clothing. I guess you can backup your save in case you really mess up and go for an ability you end up disliking.

So does this give you the skill without the stat changes once you've copied it?

One can be looted near a small chapel at the bottom of rotating elevator in Raya Lucaria Academy, closest grace is SCHOOLHOUSE CLASSROOM SITE, go all the way down on lift then jump up the ledge near abductor fight area

i like the ashes of war system. but this makes it worse then it could have been.

I don't think this item gets enough credit. I could easily imagine a version of the game where they didn't include it and you had to do a new game cycle whenever you wanted another Ash of War of the same type. So props to them for thinking about this the first time around.
