Magma Wyrm is a Field Boss in Elden Ring. Magma Wyrms were once human, but were transformed into lesser dragons for the sin of Dragon Communion. These are optional bosses as players are not required to defeat them to advance in Elden Ring.
See also Magma Wyrm Makar and Great Wyrm Theodorix.
Those who have performed the Dragon Communion will find their humanity slowly slipping away. Once they fully succumb to their fate, they are left no more than wyrms that crawl the earth.

Magma Wyrm Combat information
- Stance: 120
- Parryable: No
- Is vulnerable to a critical hit after being stance broken
Dragon type
- Weak spot: Head
- Damage:
Slash,
Strike,
Fire
Negations (or Absorptions)
The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Magma Wyrm Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Magma Wyrm:
- Use Redmane Knight Ogha Ashes for his durability, fire resistance, and ranged attacks which can hit the Magma Wyrm's head for extra damage
- If you don't have Ogha yet, Crystalian Ashes, Banished Knight Engvall Ashes, or Banished Knight Oleg Ashes are all effective for drawing (and surviving) aggresion
- On the other hand, Ancestral Follower Ashes and Latenna the Albinauric are useful for hitting its head for extra damage
- Use the Rock Sling spell to take advantage of its weakness to physical damage
- Use Flamedrake Talisman to reduce fire damage
Melee Users
Heads I Win: Magma Wyrm takes more damage if you attack its head, so if you learn when it's vulnerable you can deal a lot of damage very quickly. Stay in front of it just far enough away to easily dodge its sword attacks but close enough to move in when it starts using Lava Belch. Avoid its sides if at all possible: it's hard to read its windups from there so its attacks can take you by surprise.
Tails You Lose: On the other hand, very few of its attacks can reliably or quickly hit directly behind it. If you focus on attacking its tail, you won't do as much damage but you won't have to work as hard to stay alive. If it starts to turn around, back up and move back in when you have a safe opportunity to run through its legs. Just be careful not to get boxed in by the lava it leaves lying on the ground.
Magic and Ranged Users
Heads Up: Magic and ranged users have the advantage of being able to target its head at any time for extra damage. You can use quick-casting spells for added accuracy, or focus more on physical spells to take advantage of its relative lack of physical defense. Whatever you do, though, avoid fire damage because of its massive fire resistance.
Orbital Dynamics: Magma Wyrm doesn't rotate very quickly, so try to continue moving around it so it spends as much time as possible turning rather than attacking. This is particularly useful when you're using spirit summons: whenever it's focused on them, use that opportunity to stand on its opposite side to it has to rotate as much as possible once you draw its ire.
Magma Wyrm Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Phase 1 | ||
---|---|---|
Swing | Swings its scalesword in various directions | Roll into the swing or jump over it since it usually stays close to the ground |
Hook | After a downsward swing that extends its sword in front of it, pulls the sword back towards itself | Either roll away from the wyrm through the sword, or keep to its right flank so the attack misses entirely |
Scalesword Slam | Lifts its sword horizontally in both hands, then slams it down doing damage in a large area | Roll or jump forward slightly after its left hand grabs the sword, then attack its head |
Gliding Slam | Grabs its sword in its mouth and jumps into the air, gliding forward before slamming the sword on the ground as it lands | If you're close enough, run underneath it and attack its tail. If you're further away, run even further back |
Charge | Raises its head as lava pools at its mouth, then charges forward while drooling lava along its path that lingers on the ground for a short time | The windup can look a lot like Lava Belch, so check to make sure its head is pointed outwards and its front feet stay on the ground. Roll to either side, keep your distance, and wait for this attack to finish and the lava to disperse before you renew your assault |
Lava Belch | Raises its head as lava pools at its mouth, then sends a glob flying at you. The lava lingers on the ground for a a short time | If it's facing forward the windup can look a lot like a Charge, so check to make sure its head is pointed straight up and both its hands lift off the ground. If so, you can safely attack for several seconds If it's facing sideways, hug its body, move underneath its head, and attack |
Phase 2 | ||
Rise Up | Once it reaches 60% HP or lower, rises up onto its hind legs and drools lava onto its sword, leaving a pool that lingers on the ground for a short time. This is only used once and signals the beginning of Phase 2 | Attack its tail |
Swing | Swings its scalesword in various directions | Roll into the swings |
Stab | Crouches down then stabs its scalesword forward, then roars harmlessly | Roll to your right and attack its head |
Scalesword Chop | Turns its head counterclockwise, raises its sword above its head, then quickly chops it down onto the ground. This does not create a shockwave | Roll forward through the chop and attack its tail |
Scalesword Slam | Raises its sword high above its head with two hands, waits a moment, then slams it into the ground creating a massive shockwave | Attack as it raises the sword, then roll back just after it lifts its right foot so you're positioned to attack its head. Don't bother trying to get behind it, since the shockwave will hit you anyway |
Rolling Swing | Rolls onto its tail and then towards you before swinging its scalesword at you counterclockwise and down | Roll left as soon as you see it open its mouth |
Lava Belch | Raises its head as lava pools at its mouth, then sends a glob flying at you. The lava lingers on the ground for a a short time | Run towards it and attack its legs |
Lava Spray | Raises its head as lava pools at its mouth, then sprays many globs in a clockwise arc in front of it. The lava lingers on the ground for a a short time | Attack it during the windup, then run behind it to avoid being pushed into the lava pools |
Magma Drool | Raises its head as magma pools at its mouth if it's not in the middle of a combo, then lets it flow down in front of it, leaving a pool that lingers on the ground for a short time | Run through its legs and attack its tail where the magma can't reach you |
Magma Wyrm Lore, Notes & Other Trivia
- Magma Wyrms are individuals who have heavily partaken of Dragon Communion and degenerated into mere imiations of dragons.
This is a recurring theme of Souls games, like in Dark Souls, there was a Dragon Cult built on worshipping and imitating the power of the Everlasting Dragons, and it is not too dissimilar here - Magma Wyrms have two additional sets of teeth that protrude from the roofs of their mouths, similar to the pterygoidal teeth of mosasaurs
- The Magma Wyrms’ breath cannot knock players down.

Game of the Year! The best game designers of the moment! Takes true geniuses to create this kind of boss (see also Death Rite Bird, Dragonkin Soldier, Putrid Avatars). Kudos!

Just done the fort laiedd magma wyrm. Blasphemous at 10 n was struggling (natch), so tried the bloodhound fang at 5 and done on first go. The bear just after was still a nightmare tho

Overall a cool boss fight, but the max amount of times that the charge should be done is two. I've seen them do these attacks up to five times in a row, which just artificially prolongs the fight and becomes annoying. Had the charge attack not even been created, these fights would probably be one of the more fun and fair fights in the game.

Sword of St. Trina + a Misericorde will get rid of these bozos nice and easy
- Anonymous
The boss itself is fine imo, except for the one in the Volcano Manor. you have to fight it along 3 very small platforms and it becomes extremely difficult to dodge its charge attack when you don't have enough room to actually run away and it becomes an absolute chore trying to kill it without a lot of vigor and armor to simply tank the damage.
- Anonymous
In no world should a boss be able to do an attack 5 ****ing times in a row, let alone it be some shitty charge attack with the worst hitbox known to man
- Anonymous
Would be a cool enemy all around, but that charge that makes his whole body a hitbox, what the ****? Sometimes it does that attack up to 5 times in a row. Holy cringe
I love the game but sometimes bosses have such bullshit moves and mechanics that score goes from 10 to a 7.

The one by Fort Laiedd appears to heal from sitting in the lava, but I don't see it mentioned anywhere. I'm playing a caster build, and anytime I moved away to heal or drink a flask, if he was in the lava, his health would be just a little higher when I came back in for a few hits. After I got him to half health, there were times where he would turn to go back into the lava pool instead of chasing me until I hit him again. I know if you get too far away he warps back and his health appears to partially reset, but that's not what was happening. I stayed in range of his arena the whole time. Has anyone else noticed this? Or was it just human error on my part? I didn't think to actually sit there test it before I killed him.

Honestly, I really do love the magma worm, and I also love the magma worm sword. Such a good enemy to fight normally that, but it’s actually a good challenge because then it prepares you for the fire damage you’ll be taking in the future hint hint, but overall, I really do love the game and I love how much of a challenge it actually is

Such a dumb fight on Fort Laiedd. They make half the fighting space unavailable, and then put uneven rock formations and trees to get caught and stuck on against an enemy that locks you and/or Torrent if you just so happen to skim his lava pools or get caught next to him or under him if he slithers.
I'd rather just his whole move set be his second phase. Strikes, close fire plumes/lava pools and slams. This who "don't touch the lava" mechanic is just terrible and not fun. And they make you fight him THREE times.
Definitely the worst/least fun fight (Fort Laiedd) I've had in this game so far.
- Anonymous
Wish there was a way to counter their charge, such as by landing a perfectly-timed jump attack. As is, the charge turns a decent field boss into a non-interactive chore for what can feel like an eternity.
- Anonymous
Hot take but I'd love to see a Wyrm equivalence to the dragon covenant from Dark Souls in Elden Ring.
Like once the tarnished gets those yellow dragon eyes after consuming too much from the Dragon Communion, you get a special item that can morph you into a semi Wyrm form until death.
- Anonymous
The one in volcano manor can be super easily cheese with an envoys longhorn by dropping over the ledge next to it, just turn around and free aim cast it over the ledge, the bubbles come out over and his attacks can't reach you even though it thinks it's in range so it keeps trying
- Anonymous
Fun fight (usually), but I just had one of these guys use his magma charge attack 9 CONSECUTIVE TIMES IN A ROW! Fight might need a little tweaking
- Anonymous
Is it just me or are these things oddly cute? They almost look like giant Bearded Dragons.
- Anonymous
In Volcano manor you can use spirit ashes to lure and distract. You can run back to the elevator, go up and chase down it from above with rock sling or other range method without any harm. (It is good to previously get rid of the serpent that patrols that upper area.)
- Anonymous
"Magma Wyrm is incredibly susceptible to magic damage." - The absorption number (+40) indicates differently
- Anonymous
I like this boss design as it reminds me of Quelaag. Only complaint is that you have to sometimes wait half an hour for it to stop crawling around and being a hitbox.
- Anonymous
These guys suck. Making the entire arena impassable isn't a fun mechanic.
- Anonymous
I hope a future update adds a cooldown to their charge attack, because waiting there and taking damage while this thing charges 3 times in a row and covers the entire floor in lava is pretty bullshit
- Anonymous
If he resists 40% of magic damage, he isn't "incredibly susceptible to magic damage". There is a mistake on this wiki
- Anonymous
For magic users Rock sling is an excellent spell because it does physical damage instead of magic (he has 40 resistance to magic and only 10 to strike/standard), it also staggers him quite fast, allowing for a good critical with your trusty misericorde. Aiming the head seems to do much higher damage too.
And I'm stupid because it's already written in the wiki. Oh well. I just confirm this lol.
- Anonymous
If you are a mage trying to get moonveil, i recommend using glint-stone pebble ash of war against magma wyrm. Rogier sells it, and the lazuli glintstone sword have it as it's standard weapon art. Another option is using meteorite staff + rock sling (both found on caelid), but it takes more time to kill.
- Anonymous
Don't follow the strategy above on strategy for Mage. Unless you have 40+ Int and 6-8 blue flasks, glintstone phalanx is garbage damage. At 28-30 Int with the Metorite staff, Great Glintstone Shard takes him down quicker and with less flasks. The most effective strat I found was bait his "Tigrexesque" charge and roll to the side each time, when he stops you typically have 20-30 seconds where he does nothing, just go ham on his ass (literally where his bum hole would be) with carian slicer. He almost always then follows up with spin attack - if you have a shield just block this, rinse and repeat.
At least one of these, the one by Fort Laidd, is completely immune to fire damage. Probably because it has to run around on the lava and not die. Pure fire damage spells/skills did nothing to it at all

I only really hated this dude in the small arena in the tunnel. With more space, I found this boss to be more fun.
- Anonymous
The one in gael tunnel did his stupid unpunishable charge attack 9 times in a goddamn row. Their AI is absolute garbage.

You can afk the one at Mt gelmir with Latenna by climbing a big rock with Torrent and spawning her at a sniping spot, or you could fight it with latenna as support instead.

Same tactic as Starscourge Radahn. Rotten Breath with summons for aggro. Keep the rot on him and keep away from the magma charge.
- Anonymous
He collapsed into a ripostable position from the host and I was stuck between his arm and leg and died in lava lol

Just managed to screw myself out of getting runes on this boss by having the boss die just a second or two after me. My summon killed it as I was fading away, and I got his loot but 0 runes. It was the volcano manor one too so it was a pain in the ass with all the added lava.

I am ashamed to say. I try to play as a lightning throwing paladine. But simply throwing kukris was more effective against him. Noooo. Now I hate my build.

See, now this is the kind of in depth, high quality information I come to this wiki for. I never would have thought of this.

The Gael tunnel one got destroyed by my level 36 sorcerer with meteorite staff and spamming rock sling (no summons). Massive poise damage and the boss got staggered like 3-4 times.

If you're melee I think its best to try to stay under it and do r2 attacks to break its stance - I went into this fight unprepared with a +6 fire infused weapon and still won. Obviously, you'll want to run when it starts to spew magma. Also, use a spirit that is mobile so it doesn't get melted by the magma... I had the greatshield guys with me at the time and they went down pretty quick. Maybe Letenna could work too if you drop her right at the entrance?

Slow & steady is the name of the game with this guy. He is very slow and very passive and cannot really follow up on a guard break; even hiding behind a not-upgraded kite shield I took no damage when I finally killed him. He likes to do his little charge move multiple times in a row.
Any of his breath/fireball attacks can just be strafed out of while holding your shield up and punished with a charged r2 or several r1s. Otherwise, just pop him with a quick r1 or 2 after every attack and chill. The safest thing to do is stay generally in front of him and bonk him on the snoot, his frontal attacks are very easily blocked.
He has one overhand attack that you actually have to dodge but he only uses it if you are trying to cast or flask while 15ish yards in front of him as far as I could tell.
He's VERY resistant to fire so don't even try. Bleed hits him hard but does not build up quickly at all, I think I only got 3 procs, but they sped the fight up dramatically.

Rotten Breath very quickly runs this guy down, like many bosses. Semi-cheese strat but you still need to avoid dying. Use a weapon with frost to speed things up.

Looks tough and takes forever to kill it a low levels without bleed, yet its resistant to it. Circle strife at a healthy distance to avoid most of its attacks, and the sword can easily be blocked (don't worry about guard breaks, it can't follow up on them). Run to the sides (don't bother with rolling) and you should be safe from the magma dash.
Killed it first try at level 15 by wacking it with an uchi for 10 minutes straight. At low levels you likely lack the sorcery to damage it so might as well allot everything into hp flasks and focus on bleeding it.
FROSTBITE!!!! 100%! i used a cold longsword and just stayed near his head rolling into him then slicing when I could, and once he was inflicted he passed out and I got a good 10 hits on him. Finished it off after that

Unlocked Moonveil Katana after defeating, strange but I’ll take it

Making him chase you around the rock pillar in Gael Tunnel is the cheese strat.
Only took 78 arrows (aimed for the head) for my level 35 Samurai but seemed like there were some openings for quick melee attacks while circling around.

this mf is a love child of the most annoying enemies and bosses in bloodborne combined together lmao like the fire cleric beast and well sharks

This guy is pretty much immune to fire which rendered my build useless. Ended up cheesing him by running up on the rock next to the mountain, and shooting him with lightning spear. His hitbox is pretty low, only had to watch out for magma breadth.

Piece of cake with a sacred Zweihander and charged R2 pokes.

Aim for the head? Nope, that would be the devil's feiry *******. Aim for its hind legs and tail! All you have to worry about is the slam, the 360 swing, and the magma from the side spew. Camera lock is horrible, so don't use it. Works every time.

The overhead slam in phase 2 is such BS with how big the aoe is

The Volcano Manor one only gives 5000 runes. I'll let you decide if its worth fighting.
IMO its a horrible fight. Boss phase 1 is much harder than phase 2 because if you get hit by the magma charge the fight is basically over.
You get pushed around or get hit by the lava and die without being able to do anything.
It would be fine if the arena wasn't stupid small since everywhere else is lava.
BTW he has a jumping attack in phase 1 as well. Used it only ever once but he can do it instead of a charge.

Didn't think this guy was too bad until I tried a fists run. Holy **** he is cancer

Was having trouble with it in Gael Tunnel as a prophet. As you can guess, I either could use melee or incantations, so Rock Sling was not an option for me. Fortunately, I was carrying with me the Bestial Sling incantation, and despite not doing any big damage, it helped a lot with the poise break and from there, deal damage with my melee weapon. The nice thing with the bestial sling is that it's fast to cast and you can land hits at a relatively safe distance. Managed to beat it as soon as I decided to use Bestial Sling.

crazy. just beat this guy with my LAST cast of glintstone pebble. only had one red flask, the rest blue, i don't remember how many total. seems like the guide was wrong about magic being so effective. i only got him to flop over for a super whammy once. then again all i used was pebble.

His site of grace isn't where it appears for me but a bit closer to the wall. That's the second boss site of grace I've found since the 1.03 patch that isn't where it should be.

Cool boss but those camera angles are terrible. I also hated the terrain and got so tired of focusing on the boss only to get stuck by some rocks.

Just fought the first one.
I was level 60, and used bloodhound’s fang.
Took about 40 mins of trying, but eventually you get his timing and how to dodge his attacks down.
I dodged left for basically all his moves and it worked. Just stay far away when he does his fire charge. I basically only attacked with the weapon skill only. The fang’s skill hits hard, and gets you a bit of space.
Don’t get greedy.

WHO THE **** IS TEACHING THESE THINGS HOW TO SMITH SWORDS MUCH LESS WIELD THEM!?
Im so tired of getting summoned to these. They get more health, since its coop mode, but i still have to solo them because the hosts keep spamming fire incantations.
Like cmon, the madness laser didnt do any damage the first time, why should it the 20th?
