Magma Wyrm is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Magma Wyrm Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Magma Wyrms easily, as well as boss stats and lore for the Magma Wyrms.

Magma Wyrms are lesser dragons that wield a gigantic curved sword. They are transformed people who had invested too much in Dragon Communion and were turned as a punishment. A Magma Wyrm can be found at the end of Gael Tunnel and in the lava pool south of Fort Laiedd. Two named Magma Wyrm bosses exist in-game - Magma Wyrm Makar and Great Wyrm Theodorix.

This is an optional boss, as players are not required defeat it to advance in Elden Ring. They can expel molten lava from their mouths and are very nimble and aggressive. It may be helpful to equip and consume Equipment and Items that boost your Fire resistance when fighting this boss as many to their attacks, especially those with big AOEs, deal Fire damage. Unnamed Magma Wyrms drop Dragon Hearts, Moonveil, and unlock Magma Breath for purchase when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Great Enemy bosses can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

Those who have performed the Dragon Communion will find their humanity slowly slipping away. Once they fully succumb to their fate, they are left no more than wyrms that crawl the earth.

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Magma Wyrm Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Magma Wyrm:

  • Use any tanky Ashes that can draw aggro, such as Mad Pumpkin Head. Ranged Spirits like Ancestral Follower and Latenna can aim for their head, dealing a good amount of damage.
  • Use the Rock Sling Spell. Aiming for their head using this can easily stun them. Lightning Spear is a good choice for faith users.
  • Bring some fire-protective talismans like Flamedrake to reduce fire damage.
  • Staying behind their back can usually render most of their attacks useless, unless it is an AOE attack.

Melee Users

The Magma Wyrm's most powerful attack is after he rears up with fire in his mouth. He then waddles forward and starts turning towards the Tarnished. It loves to do this three times in a row, and it will hurt anyone who touches it's body while waddling. Avoid this attack completely and just wait for him to be finished, and wait for the magma to disperse before commencing your attack.

Another dangerous attack is when it puts its sword underneath it and does an overall AOE. When you see it's sword underneath his belly, put your shield up or dodge roll. Otherwise, strafing with your shield up is enough to dodge or deflect the other attacks.

You actually want to stay in front of him and target his head. Attacking his side will trigger his more deadly moves, so keep in front at medium range of him while sliding around his sword and fireball attacks.
Magic and Ranged Users

Magma Wyrm is incredibly susceptible to magic damage. Use Sorcery spells that hit multiple times such as Glintblade Phalanx to quickly break its poise and allow for a critical attack. Players invested in Int-based magic have a very large advantage against this boss, allowing them to lock him down very consistently.

Magma Wyrm Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Projectile Lava Spew (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm raises its chest and rears its head back while lava particles appear in its mouth. The wyrm then rises momentarily to its hind legs and spits a glob of lava forwards at the player. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. This attack is heavily punishable, but has a telegraph very similar to the Magma Wyrm’s charge. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If it does not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. If it does, it is the highly punishable lava spew; run under the wyrm and begin to attack.
Charge (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm raises its chest and rears its head back while lava particles appear in its mouth. It then begins to charge forwards, dealing damage on contact with any part of its model and leaving a trail of lava puddles in its wake that stagger and damage players who step in them. This attack may be chained up to three times in a row, and will knock the player down if they are physically struck by the wyrm. This attack is highly dangerous, but has a telegraph very similar to the Magma Wyrm’s highly punishable lava spew. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If they do not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. Be careful not to be caught in front of the wyrm; standing thee can often lead to the Magma Wyrm knocking you backwards along the path it is charging, and then trampling over you as you recover from the initial knockdown
Sideways Lava Spew (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm turns its head to either the left or right, and waits momentarily as lava particles appear in its mouth. It then sprays a glob of lava towards its hind leg. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Hug the Magma Wyrm’s body and sprint under its head, then attack while the wyrm is busy spewing lava.
Scalesword Swipe (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword in one hand, and after a short delay swings from its right to its left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player down if it connects. Roll to the left through the sweep and attack the Magma Wyrm.
Scalesword Hook Combo (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm quickly slams its scalesword vertically into the ground in front of it, then yanks the hooklike blade backwards. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll through the initial slam and the followup hook, or roll through the initial slam and move to the right side of the Magma Wyrm's body.
Scalesword Spin (phase 1) This attack is commonly used when the player is behind the Magma Wyrm. The wyrm raises its scalesword, then spins clockwise to face the player (that is, to its right) while delivering a sweeping blow with the weapon. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Step back slightly from the Magma Wyrm, as its body becomes a hitbox during this attack. Roll through the sweep from its scalesword or jump over the sweep, and attack the Magma Wyrm’s head.
Scalesword Guillotine (phase 1) The Magma Wyrm grips its scalesword in both hands, rises momentarily onto its hind legs, then abruptly slams downwards to create a shockwave. Being hit directly by the blade will deal more damage than that of the shockwave, but both will knock the player to the ground if they connects. Dodge through or jump over the shockwave and attack the head. Note that the dodge timing for this attack is earlier than it appears.
Standing Lava Vomit (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from its left to its right (your right to your left) that lands a short distance in front of it. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Sprint forwards between the Magma Wyrm’s legs and attack it. If you stagger the wyrm, do not attempt to riposte; the head will be surrounded by lava that does extreme damage and prevents you from easily reaching it. Instead, simply continue to attack the body.
Standing Lava Spew (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from its left to its right (your right to your left) that land far from the wyrm. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Sprint forwards between the Magma Wyrm’s legs and attack them.
Advancing Lava Spew (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then begins to spew lava in front of itself as it walks forwards. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Attack the Magma Wyrm a few times as it prepares the attack, then run around and behind it to avoid being pushed by the wyrm’s body into the lava pools forming behind you.
Scalesword Slam (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword above its head and holds that position for several moments. Then, it slams the blade vertically into the ground, creating a massive shockwave. Being hit directly by the sword deals more damage than being hit by only the shockwave, and both will knock the player to the ground if they connect. Do not attempt to run behind the Magma Wyrm; the shockwave is large enough to hit you even if you are behind it. Instead, attack the wyrm as it raises the sword, and watch for it to begin slamming the blade down. Dodge very late as it does this, and then continue to attack the Magma Wyrm.
Rolling Scalesword Slam (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm rolls sideways away from the player, then rolls back towards them with a scalesword swipe into the ground from its right to its left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll to the left through the slash and attack the Magma Wyrm.
Standing Scalesword Sweep (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm brings its scalesword over its left shoulder, then sweeps it across the ground from its left to its right (your right to your left). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll to the right through the sweep and attack the Magma Wyrm.
Scalesword Stab (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm crouches down, then stabs forwards with its scalesword. After stabbing, it catches itself momentarily on its forepaws and roars before rising back to a standing position. Roll to the right to avoid the stab, and then attack the vulnerable head.
Slashing Scalesword Combo (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm steps forwards with its left (your right) leg, then brings its scalesword up from its right to its left (your left to your right) in a diagonal slash, then briefly raises the scalesword above its head before slamming it vertically downwards. Either attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll left through the rising slash, then roll sideways to dodge the slam before attacking the Magma Wyrm.
Slamming Scalesword Combo (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword over its right (your left) shoulder, then quickly slams it vertically downwards. It then quickly follows this first slam with a second vertical slam. Roll sideways twice to dodge each slam, then attack the Magma Wyrm.
Slam-Spit combo (phase 2) The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword to its left (your right), then slams it to the ground with both hands (but does NOT cause a shockwave). The wyrm then leans forwards and spits a glob of lava at the player. The slam will knock the player to the ground if it connects, and the latter leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Roll forwards through the slam, and then attack the Magma Wyrm as it spits lava harmlessly over your head.

Magma Wyrm Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Magma Wyrms are individuals who have heavily partaken of Dragon Communion and degenerated into mere imiations of dragons.
This is a recurring theme of Souls games, like in Dark Souls, there was a Dragon Cult built on worshipping and imitating the power of the Everlasting Dragons, and it is not too dissimilar here.
  • Magma Wyrms have two additional sets of teeth that protrude from the roofs of their mouths, similar to the pterygoidal teeth of mosasaurs.
  • The Magma Wyrms’ breath cannot knock players down.

Hot take but I'd love to see a Wyrm equivalence to the dragon covenant from Dark Souls in Elden Ring.
Like once the tarnished gets those yellow dragon eyes after consuming too much from the Dragon Communion, you get a special item that can morph you into a semi Wyrm form until death.

The one in volcano manor can be super easily cheese with an envoys longhorn by dropping over the ledge next to it, just turn around and free aim cast it over the ledge, the bubbles come out over and his attacks can't reach you even though it thinks it's in range so it keeps trying

        • Anonymous

Fun fight (usually), but I just had one of these guys use his magma charge attack 9 CONSECUTIVE TIMES IN A ROW! Fight might need a little tweaking

          • Anonymous

In Volcano manor you can use spirit ashes to lure and distract. You can run back to the elevator, go up and chase down it from above with rock sling or other range method without any harm. (It is good to previously get rid of the serpent that patrols that upper area.)

            • Anonymous

"Magma Wyrm is incredibly susceptible to magic damage." - The absorption number (+40) indicates differently

              • Anonymous

I like this boss design as it reminds me of Quelaag. Only complaint is that you have to sometimes wait half an hour for it to stop crawling around and being a hitbox.

                • Anonymous

I hope a future update adds a cooldown to their charge attack, because waiting there and taking damage while this thing charges 3 times in a row and covers the entire floor in lava is pretty bullshit

                  • Anonymous

If he resists 40% of magic damage, he isn't "incredibly susceptible to magic damage". There is a mistake on this wiki

                    • Anonymous

For magic users Rock sling is an excellent spell because it does physical damage instead of magic (he has 40 resistance to magic and only 10 to strike/standard), it also staggers him quite fast, allowing for a good critical with your trusty misericorde. Aiming the head seems to do much higher damage too.
And I'm stupid because it's already written in the wiki. Oh well. I just confirm this lol.

                      • Anonymous

If you are a mage trying to get moonveil, i recommend using glint-stone pebble ash of war against magma wyrm. Rogier sells it, and the lazuli glintstone sword have it as it's standard weapon art. Another option is using meteorite staff + rock sling (both found on caelid), but it takes more time to kill.

                        • Anonymous

Don't follow the strategy above on strategy for Mage. Unless you have 40+ Int and 6-8 blue flasks, glintstone phalanx is garbage damage. At 28-30 Int with the Metorite staff, Great Glintstone Shard takes him down quicker and with less flasks. The most effective strat I found was bait his "Tigrexesque" charge and roll to the side each time, when he stops you typically have 20-30 seconds where he does nothing, just go ham on his ass (literally where his bum hole would be) with carian slicer. He almost always then follows up with spin attack - if you have a shield just block this, rinse and repeat.

                          • At least one of these, the one by Fort Laidd, is completely immune to fire damage. Probably because it has to run around on the lava and not die. Pure fire damage spells/skills did nothing to it at all

I only really hated this dude in the small arena in the tunnel. With more space, I found this boss to be more fun.

The one in gael tunnel did his stupid unpunishable charge attack 9 times in a goddamn row. Their AI is absolute garbage.

You can afk the one at Mt gelmir with Latenna by climbing a big rock with Torrent and spawning her at a sniping spot, or you could fight it with latenna as support instead.

                                  • Anonymous

Same tactic as Starscourge Radahn. Rotten Breath with summons for aggro. Keep the rot on him and keep away from the magma charge.

He collapsed into a ripostable position from the host and I was stuck between his arm and leg and died in lava lol

                                      • Anonymous

Just managed to screw myself out of getting runes on this boss by having the boss die just a second or two after me. My summon killed it as I was fading away, and I got his loot but 0 runes. It was the volcano manor one too so it was a pain in the ass with all the added lava.

Summoned the Jellyfish and beat him down with a completely stock mace to proc bleed. Kept him on me the whole fight, wasn't too bad.

I love this boss, he's just a goofy lizard that stands up and gets all angry, he doesn't look too mean but a definitely meaner than the others wyrms.

I am ashamed to say. I try to play as a lightning throwing paladine. But simply throwing kukris was more effective against him. Noooo. Now I hate my build.

The Gael tunnel one got destroyed by my level 36 sorcerer with meteorite staff and spamming rock sling (no summons). Massive poise damage and the boss got staggered like 3-4 times.

                                                  • Anonymous

If you're melee I think its best to try to stay under it and do r2 attacks to break its stance - I went into this fight unprepared with a +6 fire infused weapon and still won. Obviously, you'll want to run when it starts to spew magma. Also, use a spirit that is mobile so it doesn't get melted by the magma... I had the greatshield guys with me at the time and they went down pretty quick. Maybe Letenna could work too if you drop her right at the entrance?

                                                    • Anonymous

Slow & steady is the name of the game with this guy. He is very slow and very passive and cannot really follow up on a guard break; even hiding behind a not-upgraded kite shield I took no damage when I finally killed him. He likes to do his little charge move multiple times in a row.

Any of his breath/fireball attacks can just be strafed out of while holding your shield up and punished with a charged r2 or several r1s. Otherwise, just pop him with a quick r1 or 2 after every attack and chill. The safest thing to do is stay generally in front of him and bonk him on the snoot, his frontal attacks are very easily blocked.

He has one overhand attack that you actually have to dodge but he only uses it if you are trying to cast or flask while 15ish yards in front of him as far as I could tell.

He's VERY resistant to fire so don't even try. Bleed hits him hard but does not build up quickly at all, I think I only got 3 procs, but they sped the fight up dramatically.

Rotten Breath very quickly runs this guy down, like many bosses. Semi-cheese strat but you still need to avoid dying. Use a weapon with frost to speed things up.

Looks tough and takes forever to kill it a low levels without bleed, yet its resistant to it. Circle strife at a healthy distance to avoid most of its attacks, and the sword can easily be blocked (don't worry about guard breaks, it can't follow up on them). Run to the sides (don't bother with rolling) and you should be safe from the magma dash.
Killed it first try at level 15 by wacking it with an uchi for 10 minutes straight. At low levels you likely lack the sorcery to damage it so might as well allot everything into hp flasks and focus on bleeding it.

                                                            • FROSTBITE!!!! 100%! i used a cold longsword and just stayed near his head rolling into him then slicing when I could, and once he was inflicted he passed out and I got a good 10 hits on him. Finished it off after that

Making him chase you around the rock pillar in Gael Tunnel is the cheese strat.

Only took 78 arrows (aimed for the head) for my level 35 Samurai but seemed like there were some openings for quick melee attacks while circling around.

                                                                    • Anonymous

This guy is pretty much immune to fire which rendered my build useless. Ended up cheesing him by running up on the rock next to the mountain, and shooting him with lightning spear. His hitbox is pretty low, only had to watch out for magma breadth.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Aim for the head? Nope, that would be the devil's feiry *******. Aim for its hind legs and tail! All you have to worry about is the slam, the 360 swing, and the magma from the side spew. Camera lock is horrible, so don't use it. Works every time.

                                                                        • Anonymous

The Volcano Manor one only gives 5000 runes. I'll let you decide if its worth fighting.
IMO its a horrible fight. Boss phase 1 is much harder than phase 2 because if you get hit by the magma charge the fight is basically over.
You get pushed around or get hit by the lava and die without being able to do anything.
It would be fine if the arena wasn't stupid small since everywhere else is lava.

BTW he has a jumping attack in phase 1 as well. Used it only ever once but he can do it instead of a charge.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Was having trouble with it in Gael Tunnel as a prophet. As you can guess, I either could use melee or incantations, so Rock Sling was not an option for me. Fortunately, I was carrying with me the Bestial Sling incantation, and despite not doing any big damage, it helped a lot with the poise break and from there, deal damage with my melee weapon. The nice thing with the bestial sling is that it's fast to cast and you can land hits at a relatively safe distance. Managed to beat it as soon as I decided to use Bestial Sling.

                                                                            • Anonymous

crazy. just beat this guy with my LAST cast of glintstone pebble. only had one red flask, the rest blue, i don't remember how many total. seems like the guide was wrong about magic being so effective. i only got him to flop over for a super whammy once. then again all i used was pebble.

                                                                              • His site of grace isn't where it appears for me but a bit closer to the wall. That's the second boss site of grace I've found since the 1.03 patch that isn't where it should be.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Cool boss but those camera angles are terrible. I also hated the terrain and got so tired of focusing on the boss only to get stuck by some rocks.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    Just fought the first one.
I was level 60, and used bloodhound’s fang.
Took about 40 mins of trying, but eventually you get his timing and how to dodge his attacks down.
I dodged left for basically all his moves and it worked. Just stay far away when he does his fire charge. I basically only attacked with the weapon skill only. The fang’s skill hits hard, and gets you a bit of space.
                                                                                    Don’t get greedy.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Just beat him, I would say the best way to beat him in the gael tunnel is to use magic. I started as a Samurai and wanted to incorporate a little bit of magic so I raised my int to 13, I found the demihuman staff and used the peble spell. With the imp helm that raises int I did 102 damage to the head. Almost nothing I know. With all my flasks to FP i was able to take him to a bit less than 1/10 of his health. Dodging to my right (his left) and you almost dont get hit. Was a close fight nonetheless. I enjoyed it

                                                                                      • Anonymous

fight as melee/sam: just be on top of dragon all the time -- unless its using fire charge attack...
in which case roll roll perpendicular so it runs into the wall not at you. essentially wait until hes done doing that attack before resuming. it can only do that atk 3 times in a row (and if youre not up in his grill swinging, he will use it more often, he charges less if you are in melee). pretty much stand near its skull and swing swing swing. learn to roll its melee/aoe attacks, fireball is free chance to hit. after realizing this strat took me several progressively better attempts and beat him with many pots left.
was lvl42 full dex/hp with 10 points wasted in str/mnd bc ive never played one of these games before.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

There’s a 4th one in the lava down in the volcano manor underground. A third one too! Forgot his location tho. I did the moonveil one. The one that gives you a serpent sword that’s what he uses is two. One in mt gelmir somewhere in a lava area is three and now this one I’m on now. I like this boss a lot because after dieing a crap ton to him for moonveil I learned his move set so well that the others have been a breeze!

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The one at Fort Laiedd just straight up bs. Not only constantly push you to the lava, but also spit entire arena with its own lava (and half of arena is already lava, plus I can't even find any nearby Marika stake or grace). Once it push you to the corner you are dead, bc its fatass block you from running away and its lava burn you to death.

But if you are ranged build, just stand on top of the elevator and spamming spell. Unless you're hard-core melee, this **** isn't worth your anger.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Face tanking fire barrage, barely lost a quarter of my hp. His arm slightly touched me when i was behind him as he was pulling the sword across the ground and half my hp is gone. Just what the hell were they thinking?

                                                                                              • Anonymous

The AoE is always bigger than you remember.
                                                                                                So evade appropriately.

More often than not their head ends up in the magma, denying you access. Plus you also have to get there, wasting valuable seconds if you don't happen to be where it touches down. You can chunk away his health better if you use the stagger phase to really unload on him.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Make some Rotbone Arrows, lure him over to the lift platform, stand as far back from him on the platform as you can, and inflict Scarlet Rot. Once that's going, finish up with normal arrows until it's dead. Cheesy, but effective.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I was having trouble beating him (gael tunnel) with my glintstone spells because they didn't do enough damage and eventually I'd miss a dodge or two and get jumped on. switched to rock sling and completely annihilated him in no time.
My basic strategy was keep moving around the outside of the room to the left, dodge left for his swings and the fire breath, run kind of parallel past him when he does the lava crawl. You want to cast right after you dodge left (only need rock sling), sometimes only once if you're being careful. Using rock sling can also knock him down and you get in a lot of free hits.
