Magma Wyrm's Scalesword is a Curved Greatsword in Elden Ring. The Magma Wyrm's Scalesword scales primarily with Strength and Faith, with reduced scaling in Dexterity, and is a good Weapon for dealing additional Fire Damage during combat. This weapon's sharp-toothed edge can deal great damage to foes. Like its title suggests, it is a heavy-weight sword covered in hard scales and resembles the dragon's jaw.
Curved greatsword wielded by Magma Wyrms. The shape resembles a dragon's jaw and is covered in hard scales.
It's said these land-bound dragons were once humans heroes who partook in dragon communion, a grave transgression for which they were cursed to crawl the earth upon their bellies, shadows of their former selves.
Where to Find Magma Wyrm's Scalesword in Elden Ring
The Magma Wyrm's Scalesword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Drops from Magma Wyrm Makar in Ruin-Strewn Precipice in northern Liurnia of the Lakes. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Magma Wyrm's Scalesword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Magma Guillotine
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor buffed by Consumables
- Magma Wyrm's Scalesword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- This weapon has a unique R2 shared with Omen Cleaver.
- Sell Value:
500
- Magma Guillotine is almost impossible to interrupt and the first part of the skill makes the character crouch so you can avoid most horizontal swipes. The full combo has a really high motion value and can easily deal over 3000 damage. The first attack is not affected by Claw Talisman.
- Since the physical damage of this weapon has bigger base damage portion, it's best to level Strength up to 60 before you start investing in Faith. However, it is advisable to level faith up to 25 in order to use Golden Vow and Flame, Grant Me Strength.
- Its moveset has very small range when used with both hands, since its mostly used akin to a guillotine for jump attacks and heavy attacks. If you want more range, consider using it one-handed.
- The two-handed moveset, however, has a much faster R2 than would be expected of a weapon of its size - a useful tool in many situations
- You can also swing this weapon slightly faster when attacking while crouching.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Curved Greatsword weapons has increased.

If dragon communion spells are arcane based, how come this weapon (which is a result of the corruption brought on by dragon communion) is faith based?
- Anonymous
With both Axe Talisman and Spiked cracked tear, even uncharged R2 hits like a truck. And the cherry on top is that uncharged R2 is lightning-fast, you can easily abuse it instead of light attacks. My favorite curved GS

Reminds me of the good old times of The Ringed City, using a dark infused harald curved greatsword as halflight to punish people summoning multiple phantoms

There is no lore or gameplay reason for this to scale with ARC. Yes, dragon communion incantations require ARC, but this sword does not channel the power of dragons via communion, it is simply a weapon wielded by heroes who have transformed into wyrms because they were "cursed for the transgression of partaking in communion" (paraphrasing the scalesword description). There is nothing arcane about the sword, only the creatures that wield it. In terms of gameplay fire damage always scales with STR, FTH, only ARC if it is bloodflame, which the scalesword is not.
The only valid reason for wanting this sword to have ARC scaling is for drake knight cosplay builds, which is fine, but I would also point out that there is nothing explicitly stating that magma wyrms were ever drake knights. Theodorix, the only named magma wyrm, was a troll that betrayed the giants and sided with the erdtree way back during the war of the giants. Given what we know about the DK's, that they were raised and trained from birth, Theo probably wasn't one. Some banished knights use dragon communion, and they probably aren't DK's either. Currently the only drake knight we see in game is Eleonora, who became a bloody finger and uses bloodflame as well as communion. My point being, it seems that unless/until an explicitly drake knight weapon is added in future DLC, just about any weapon would be appropriate for a cosplay build, including other spoils of dragon hunting like the dragonscale blade, dragon king's cragblade, and the dragon greatclaw, but also weapons that scale with ARC or even occult infused normal weapons. Besides, the big thing for a DK cosplay build is the spells, yeah?
- Anonymous
Super underrated, scaling is quite good for both str leaning and fth leaning builds
- Anonymous
With the curved sword buffs it's a really sweet weapon in pvp and the weapon art is great for ganks! I do agree it should scale with ARC but then you'd be out of luck using incantations so I'll take the FTH scaling over build headaches any day

After having holy weapons carry me through most of the game (first Golden Halberd, then Ordovis Greatsword) it finally came the time to face Radagon/Elden Beast, and to make it easier on myself I had the Magma Wyrm ready to go. That AoW is qite powerful, is able to melt Radagon fairly quickly (although his AoE + teleporting attacks can still be difficult to dodge). Solid again Elden Beast too, the problem there is his need to swim away from you as soon as you tickle him
- Anonymous
Kind of weird that this doesn't scale with arcane, considering that magma wyrms are supposed to be people who transformed after partaking too much into dragon communion.
- Anonymous
Yeah, so after messing around with the calculator - if you want to go FULL wyrm and use the associated Dragon Incantations as well as the Scalesword you're going to have to forgo the Dragon Communion Seal and go for the Clawmark Seal, getting only the minimum Arcane needed (so 15, give or take.).
You won't perform as well as a pure Arcane Dragon Incant build, but you'll still put out some damage and your strength and faith will scale alright. At the very least, you won't need to sacrifice your Scalesword's overall AR.
- Anonymous
Do the special guillotine heavy & jumping heavy attacks deal more damage than normal?
- Anonymous
Just Finished a playthrough using this weapon. Got it to 60 Strength and 25 faith as suggested. Destroys bosses + the weapon art is basically unstoppable. Best used against large enemies.
- Anonymous
Just a piece of information: at 60 faith, the magma pool from the AOW does around 700 damage on its four ticks (unbuffed). People may think it irrelevant, but quite often crazy people stand on it, ignoring the growing damage, during PVP matches or invasions.
Also, because the AOW scales of faith better than strength, leveling faith and using some incantations to compliment your playstyle can be useful both for PVE and PVP, and since the weapons base damage is high, you still do decent damage when simply attacking with it, even at RL125-150.

If you can handle the weight, this paired with Golden Halberd is a perfect match. Both Str/Fth based weapons and work together well. Using GH also frees up a memory slot for another incant of your choosing.
Put GH in right hand, Talisman and MWSS in left. Cast FGMS, swap back to MWSS, cast Golden Vow, two hand MWSS and watch as things explode from the Skill. Or keep each weapon held and have great area control with the MWSS, and long range chops and pokes with the GH.
In my latest run I've been using both and it has been working really well.

Bro, trying to use this while also using the Dragon Communion Seal is pure pain. I have like 30 STR/30 FTH and little more than 700 AR one-handed. Why couldn't they make it scale with Arcane?
- Anonymous
Surprisingly thematic to use this in full bull goat armor, due to Targoth being a possible ally for this fight.
- Anonymous
Usually we could say that this weapon true damage might be lower by 80 or even 120 ar with rain fire defense buff and in pvp fire defense going up by leveling vigor, however it also has an ace up it's sleeve with it's unique two handed strong attack having an insane damage multiplier with even uncharged version dealing as much damage as jumping strong attack, add to it flame grant me strength and you really don't want to get hot by it with fully charged version even less so...
Ps: for this and other fire damage weapons that highly benefit from flame grant me strength pve wise highly recommend using old lords talisman and black flame incantations as both the buff and black flame effect lasts longer with it buffin fire damage and making black flame deal even more % base damage....

I'm currently using this weapon +9 to melt soldiers in Leyndell and I'm having an absolute blast, they have no chance whatsoever (Faith 50, Strength 25)

my favourite weapon from my first playthrough, also funny how crouch attacks are slightly faster, nice detail

Is weapon skill first attack (jump one) boosted by claw talisman?

I canât be the only one getting monster hunter vibes from this weapon right?

This thing answers most questions. Get it as soon as possible.

Couple this with the dragon head you get from godrick, now your enemies will bare witness

This weapon + Golden Vow + Flame, Grant me Strength + Howl of Shabriri = Big Damage Numbers
Erase your enemy's health bar in a few hits.

Perfectly balanced as all weapons should be...
They ****ing never will be, but at least this one is really cool.

I bee lined for this weapon on a new character for a str/fth run.
Can be got sub RL 50 (rot breath and summons ftw) and have been using it through RL 145 still.
I can't tell you what the optimal stat spread is, but I will say my experience with this is on par with my Bloodhound Fang run. Very fun weapon, spent most of my time 2 handing instead of dual weilding because R2 is so strong. The weapon skill is everything I wish Dragon Communion spells were like.

This sword should've had a slightly different shape and more even cleaver-like curvature reminiscent of Sparda's sword from DMC and Yhorm's machete. Nothing wrong with the shape it has other than the damn pubic hairs and that it looks like a overcooked carp. But I still love it.
- Anonymous
Wait this weapon is "covered in hard scales"... Does it deal additional damage to dragon type enemies similar to grafted dragon???? If so can anyone test it???
- Anonymous
Since I've finished Elden Ring 3 times allready on some "no summons/spirits/no cheesy weapons" builds I like to get "OP early" whenever I do new runs by basically upgrading any normal weapon to +15 or any somber weapon to +5 before I start a new playthrough. (By basically doing a big run through several areas and dungeons collecting materials).
Usually this leads to most weapons destroying any boss within Limgrave and Liurnia in 3-5 hits.
The Magma Wyrm's Scalesword however one shot any non-fire resistant monster with a fully Magma Guillotine combo.
It's really fun to use. And since you are uprading it with somber stones you can push normal smithing stones into another weapon. Preferabily something with Strike damage like a holy great mace. Then you got a fire weapon with a unique weapon art, and a holy strike weapon where you can play arround with different ashes of war to mix things up - whenever something is fire resistant or if you need strike damage.
Talking about PvE of course.

They should have had this scale with arcane just for the connection to dragon incantations
- Anonymous

This thing absolutely slaps... +9 with str/faith 50/30 at level 120something, this has been carrying me for a while. Magma guillotine allows to out-trade almost anything in PVE. Full combo one-hits knights in farum azula
- Anonymous
Was running a strength/faith build, and I totally overlooked this weapon. I always pass on the good ones until I find out later theyâd have been great, by happenstance. Why am I cursed? XD
- Anonymous
Excellent weapon for a beast incantation build, mine has 60Str/47Fth (two extra faith for Black Blade) and this thing is yet to let me down
- Anonymous
Though the 2G R2 has low range, its damage is actually insane, im not running any talismans to buff my heavy attacks and it hits well over 1600-2k with about 43 strength and 45 faith
- Anonymous
As a greatsword main in monster hunter and in all the soulsborne games im gonna go get this weapon later. Best of both worlds
- Anonymous
Ok this weapon is actually really good for pve the hyperarmor, the magma, the multi hit, and it makes me look like a feral beast
- Anonymous
Ah yes the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. The 2 handed R2 is indeed faster as a trade for range. Great for punishs which Is ironic given the fact that it looks like a guillotine when doing it.
Disagree with the advice saying level strength up to 60 first. Magma damage is going to benefit a whole lot more from faith than the measly decrease in physical DPS from 10 or so less strength points.
- Anonymous
Duel wield 2 of these and called my character lord of edge. One of the best looking weapons in the game.
- Anonymous
This thing hits way too hard. I'd say between 4000-5000 at max level. It's hard to get an exact value since the weapon art is a combo instead of a single hit attack.
- Anonymous
Great design. Hard hitting. AoW Low Profiles alot of attacks. Very fast 2handed R2. STR and FTH curvedsword. This thing is a must have weapon.

1047 on +10 upgrades on 99 all stats, hardest hitting curved sword without any dances with buffs or talismans or anything.

This bad boy is insanely powerful, not even that slow either. Surprised this isn't more
part of the meta, although I prefer it that way. Will melt everything in PvP and PvE.
- Anonymous
What's better than playing the Magma Wyrm's Scalesword? Why 2 Magma Wyrm's Scaleswords, of course, and with the standard 50/50 STR/FTH scaling I'm just breezing through NG+
- Anonymous
Strength/Faith build here. This was going to be my temporary weapon until I got the blasphemous blade, but then I kept using it while exploring. AR is great. R1's are fast enough for me. 2H R2 has short range but it's cool so I use it whenever I can. Everyone already talked about the WA, it's awesome. Blasphemous blade only gets pulled out when I go through frustrating catacombs and I don't want to chug flasks. What about pvp or pve, is it the best? Don't know, don't care. I just play elden ring for fun.
- Anonymous
This is literally the best Faith/Strength Weapon in the game, the Envoy Horn is better in certain situations like large targets, but overall this weapon carried me through the game. the Ash of War always dealt more damage than my strongest incantation, especially since you can do a follow up attack which also knocks the target down if possible. I killed the first phase of the last boss in under 30 seconds using this while buffed. Blasphemous Blade is better at AOE clear, but you are rarely fighting large enough groups of enemies to make it better than this. The Ash of War on this will annialate small clusters of enemies or single strong enemies.
- Anonymous
Started a new game to get better base stats for the build I was finding my self trending towards and to try other weapons besides thisâĤ itâs a struggle to want to use anything else besides thisâĤ even without being able to buff it this weapon is an absolute monsterâĤ is there another weapon even worth using after this?
- Anonymous
The weapon skill is actually insane. The hyperarmor can't be interrupted by literally anything
How does damage improve, going from +9 to +10, but not Guard Boost? 54 at +9 back down to 50 at +10. Make it make sense.
- Anonymous
I know it says both STR and FAI are B scaling, but does it actually scale off both equally? If I did the minimum STR requirement would I be able to pump the rest for pure faith?
- Anonymous

Imo best str/faith weapon in the game. wa obliterates everything even when trading.

Switching between this and Avatar staff on my str/faith build, this weapon skill has the highest damage ive seen yet, I dont see a reason to use blasphemous sword over this bad boy.

Closest thing for an Orphan of Kos build, so Iâll take it.

This weapon is crazy slept on. With 50 STR, 40 FAI, FGS, and physick buff I have 1110 AR two-handed. The only downside is the range. It has reeeaaaaly bad range on all its attacks.

Really poweful weapon art when combined with rotten winged insigna, by far the most devasting WA i've ever seen
- Anonymous
Two handed R1 can be followed up by R2 at any time with reduced startup. A lot of enemies are stunlocked by this including all knights and several large enemies. Works well in PVP against people you can poise through. Interestingly, the game seems to consider this to be a combo. If you R1, R2, then R1 the second R1 comes out as a left to right swing as if you never did the R2. Overaggressive enemies and players get especially destroyed due to the excellent tracking on the R2 despite the low range.
- Anonymous
Out of every STR/FAI weapon in the game this one by far has the best Scaling.
I guess that's why they call it the Scalesword.

"This weapon has a unique R2 shared with Omen Cleaver."
It's not unique if another weapon has the same thing =/

This weapon is great against those Putrid Tree Spirits that show up so often. They are weak against fire and have a tendency to slow down long enough to get several good hits in

You can cheese the bos, angle it so it gets suck behidn the big middle pillar in the room. Grab a bow and edge out so you can get him but he doesn't get unstuck.

Don't understimate this weapon, The damage on the ash is amazing well worth the risk and it still does decent damage without FP plus the whole move has hyper armor after the initial wind-up. I'm breaking the game with this sword atm really a step up from the golden halbard for enemies that arent resistant to slashing and fire. AR may seem a bit low but the weapon has a decent attack speed, the 1 hand moveset is slightly better than 2-handed tho.

This weapon never disappoints me. My final blow to a boss is always with a weapon skill while saying EAT MAGMA!!

Decided on my third character to try this one out finally, this is a really great weapon that can be picked up fairly early and will carry pretty far. 1H moveset on this is extremely nice. Originally was trying Axe of Godrick but this felt better.

This weapon is a beast for Str/Faith builds. The 2H R2 is kinda meh, but every other attack has solid power and range, and Magma Guillotine is an incredibly strong if risky Weapon Skill: the initial leap low profiles on startup, jumps over lower attacks in midair, and has hyper armor. The follow up attack low profiles most horizontal swings that aren't explicitly aimed downward, does a huge chunk of extra damage, and does a hard knockdown that gives you time to recover, get stam back, and even heal back up.
