Melee Users
Magma Wyrm's most powerful attack is after he rears up with fire in his mouth. He then waddles forward and starts turning towards the Tarnished. It loves to do this three times in a row, and it will hurt anyone who touches it's body while waddling. Avoid this attack completely and just wait for him to be finished, and wait for the magma to disperse before commencing your attack.
Another dangerous attack is when it puts its sword underneath it and does an overall AOE. When you see it's sword underneath his belly, put your shield up or dodge roll. Otherwise, strafing with your shield up is enough to dodge or deflect the other attacks.
You actually want to stay in front of him and target his head. Attacking his side will trigger his more deadly moves, so keep in front at medium range of him while sliding around his sword and fireball attacks.
Magic and Ranged Users
Magma Wyrm is incredibly susceptible to magic damage. Use Sorcery spells that hit multiple times such as Glintblade Phalanx to quickly break its poise and allow for a critical attack. Players invested in Int-based magic have a very large advantage against this boss, allowing them to lock him down very consistently.
Magma Wyrm Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Projectile Lava Spew (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm raises its chest and rears its head back while lava particles appear in its mouth. The wyrm then rises momentarily to its hind legs and spits a glob of lava forwards at the player. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | This attack is heavily punishable, but has a telegraph very similar to the Magma Wyrm’s charge. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If it does not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. If it does, it is the highly punishable lava spew; run under the wyrm and begin to attack. |
Charge (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm raises its chest and rears its head back while lava particles appear in its mouth. It then begins to charge forwards, dealing damage on contact with any part of its model and leaving a trail of lava puddles in its wake that stagger and damage players who step in them. This attack may be chained up to three times in a row, and will knock the player down if they are physically struck by the wyrm. | This attack is highly dangerous, but has a telegraph very similar to the Magma Wyrm’s highly punishable lava spew. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If they do not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. Be careful not to be caught in front of the wyrm; standing thee can often lead to the Magma Wyrm knocking you backwards along the path it is charging, and then trampling over you as you recover from the initial knockdown |
Sideways Lava Spew (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm turns its head to either the left or right, and waits momentarily as lava particles appear in its mouth. It then sprays a glob of lava towards its hind leg. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | Hug the Magma Wyrm’s body and sprint under its head, then attack while the wyrm is busy spewing lava. |
Scalesword Swipe (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword in one hand, and after a short delay swings from its right to its left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player down if it connects. | Roll to the left through the sweep and attack the Magma Wyrm. |
Scalesword Hook Combo (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm quickly slams its scalesword vertically into the ground in front of it, then yanks the hooklike blade backwards. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. | Roll through the initial slam and the followup hook, or roll through the initial slam and move to the right side of the Magma Wyrm's body. |
Scalesword Spin (phase 1) | This attack is commonly used when the player is behind the Magma Wyrm. The wyrm raises its scalesword, then spins clockwise to face the player (that is, to its right) while delivering a sweeping blow with the weapon. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. | Step back slightly from the Magma Wyrm, as its body becomes a hitbox during this attack. Roll through the sweep from its scalesword or jump over the sweep, and attack the Magma Wyrm’s head. |
Scalesword Guillotine (phase 1) | The Magma Wyrm grips its scalesword in both hands, rises momentarily onto its hind legs, then abruptly slams downwards to create a shockwave. Being hit directly by the blade will deal more damage than that of the shockwave, but both will knock the player to the ground if they connects. | Dodge through or jump over the shockwave and attack the head. Note that the dodge timing for this attack is earlier than it appears. |
Standing Lava Vomit (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from its left to its right (your right to your left) that lands a short distance in front of it. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | Sprint forwards between the Magma Wyrm’s legs and attack it. If you stagger the wyrm, do not attempt to riposte; the head will be surrounded by lava that does extreme damage and prevents you from easily reaching it. Instead, simply continue to attack the body. |
Standing Lava Spew (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from its left to its right (your right to your left) that land far from the wyrm. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | Sprint forwards between the Magma Wyrm’s legs and attack them. |
Advancing Lava Spew (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its head as particles of lava appear in its mouth, then begins to spew lava in front of itself as it walks forwards. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | Attack the Magma Wyrm a few times as it prepares the attack, then run around and behind it to avoid being pushed by the wyrm’s body into the lava pools forming behind you. |
Scalesword Slam (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword above its head and holds that position for several moments. Then, it slams the blade vertically into the ground, creating a massive shockwave. Being hit directly by the sword deals more damage than being hit by only the shockwave, and both will knock the player to the ground if they connect. | Do not attempt to run behind the Magma Wyrm; the shockwave is large enough to hit you even if you are behind it. Instead, attack the wyrm as it raises the sword, and watch for it to begin slamming the blade down. Dodge very late as it does this, and then continue to attack the Magma Wyrm. |
Rolling Scalesword Slam (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm rolls sideways away from the player, then rolls back towards them with a scalesword swipe into the ground from its right to its left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. | Roll to the left through the slash and attack the Magma Wyrm. |
Standing Scalesword Sweep (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm brings its scalesword over its left shoulder, then sweeps it across the ground from its left to its right (your right to your left). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. | Roll to the right through the sweep and attack the Magma Wyrm. |
Scalesword Stab (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm crouches down, then stabs forwards with its scalesword. After stabbing, it catches itself momentarily on its forepaws and roars before rising back to a standing position. | Roll to the right to avoid the stab, and then attack the vulnerable head. |
Slashing Scalesword Combo (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm steps forwards with its left (your right) leg, then brings its scalesword up from its right to its left (your left to your right) in a diagonal slash, then briefly raises the scalesword above its head before slamming it vertically downwards. Either attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. | Roll left through the rising slash, then roll sideways to dodge the slam before attacking the Magma Wyrm. |
Slamming Scalesword Combo (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword over its right (your left) shoulder, then quickly slams it vertically downwards. It then quickly follows this first slam with a second vertical slam. | Roll sideways twice to dodge each slam, then attack the Magma Wyrm. |
Slam-Spit combo (phase 2) | The Magma Wyrm raises its scalesword to its left (your right), then slams it to the ground with both hands (but does NOT cause a shockwave). The wyrm then leans forwards and spits a glob of lava at the player. The slam will knock the player to the ground if it connects, and the latter leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. | Roll forwards through the slam, and then attack the Magma Wyrm as it spits lava harmlessly over your head. |

The one in gael tunnel was the most fun i ever had fighting any boss ever. Has a telegraphed charge, these big sword sweeps, aoe smash, lava pools, it felt like the perfect balance of a powerful moveset with plenty of counterplay. I eventually learned that the sword attacks and the slam-down shockwave can be blocked with a heater shield, taking no damage but sending you flying backwards as you brace against the blow. A few tries later I felled the beast. Perfectly captured the essence of the dragon-slaying knight. And it had none of that "flying dragon that i cant even reach yet also cant kill with a longbow" bullshit that the other dragon fights have
