Elden Ring Magnus the Beast Claw Notes & Tips
- Wields Great Stars (infused with Lion Claw) and Seal (Clawmark Seal). Can cast Bestial Sling, Beast Claw, and Gurranq's Beast Claw.
- Deals Strike, Standard and Slash Damage. Can inflict Blood loss.
- Note that the Great Stars passive effect allows them to heal 1% of their health on hit.
- Parryable: Yes
- 1x Festering Bloody Finger is needed for each invasion attempt
- The player does not need to defeat Magnus, or even fight at all, to progress Varre's questline. Consuming the Festering Bloody Finger 3 times (via invading him 3 times) counts for completion.
- As such, the player can invade him and then use the Finger Severer item to quickly fullfill this condition.
- This sign is available even after completing the Varre's questline

I either steamroll this NPC or I just barely squeak out a win after he uses me as a pinata, doesn't really seem to be an in between
For these who tend to jump on every sign and then regret it:
1. Spoke to Varre in Limgrave
2. Ignored him entirely in an offline playthrough
3. Killed some main bosses
4. Killed this guy
5. Checked Fextralife
6. Spoke to Varre at Rose church - got the first finger
7. Teleported to the nearby grace
8. Spoke to Varre again and he granted me Lord of Blood's Favor
Apparently the order does not matter and killing Magnus early will progress the quest anyway.

Oh boy, I can't wait for Vatti to make a 30 min Prepare to Cry video about this makeshift NPC...

Found this invasion sign after giving up on Varre in an offline run, and killing Mohg.
Varre didn't seem to mind, he anointed me as a follower of Mohg anyways. Blood for the blood god, I guess.

I'd wouldn't mind having more NPC that just use some good non-unique fashion.

Unless I am mistaken his armor is page hood, fur raiment, and prophet trousers. It doesn't look like he is wearing anything in the hands slot

Found his invasion summoning sign there even after having dealt with Varré's questline, and defeating Mohg the Lord of Blood if you're interested in fighting this NPC at any point.

Not only makes Varre's quest less annoying to complete, you get a Somber 6 very early on and can powerstance Great Stars in NG.
I like this guy. Shame I gotta kill him.

For the purposes of Varre's questline, it seems either 1 kill or 3 deaths fighting Magnus count as a win. I eventually ran out of fingers trying to kill him, went back to Varre hoping he'd supply me more, and instead we advanced to the next step of finding a dead maiden to get blood from.

Ok you can invade them after completing all of varré's quest including killing him and Mohg.

Can someone do the exact map coordinates on the Elden Ring map?

it's cool and all, but who the **** found out where his invasion sign is??

Just tested: If you return to Varre after failing to slay Magnus a number of times, you'll still be given the Bloody Finger, and then try to invade Magnus again, this time not requiring any Festering Bloody Finger (assuming that the unlimited-use Bloody Finger takes precedence over the one-time use item). Defeated him with the Pureblood Knight's Medal already in my possession.
(Head canon start) Gurranq possibly fed Deathroot to Magnus (and became his champion), in order to hunt and spite Mohg's followers. (head canon over)

Whose Magnus and why are we killing him? Also, perhaps even more importantly, why does he look like just some random hobo and not a badass Tarnished warrior worthy of such a lofty title? Why not have him wear one of the unreleased armor sets, or perhaps even the Beast Champion set? Have him be Bernahl’s unnamed brother or something.
Anyway, no more mandatory PvP to advance an NPC quest, disregard everything I said above. 10/10, Miyazaki has done it again.

Oh? So can you get 2 Great Stars in a single play through now?

Best part of the update for pve and offline. Also for pvp it gives you a second great stars per playthrough! Such a good addition.

Went for him on my NG+1 file where I killed Varré right away in Limgrave, invasion sign was there.

Is it possible to fight him while online? I hate invasions but I like having messages and bloodstains around

Magnus is one of the remaining worshippers of Serosh, Lord of Beasts, who went to become King Godfrey's Regent.
Where does this information come from?

I think it's so awesome that they just straight up added extra invader NPC's so you wouldn't have to pay money on consoles just to do multi-player to progress Varre's questline

you don't need to kill magnus, but if you do, it saves you from invading him 2 more times and he drops loot
