Maliketh, The Black Blade Combat Information
- Health: NG (10,620), NG+ (13,000), NG++ (??), NG+3 (??), NG+4 (??), NG+5 (??), NG+6 (??), NG+7 (??)
- Defenses do not change between phases.
- Deals Standard Damage, Magic Damage (1st phase), and Holy Damage (2nd phase).
- Parriable:
- Beast Cleargyman: No.
- Maliketh: Yes, with Blasphemous Claw only.
- There are only two parriable attacks: Black Blade attack (ending part, both slash and dive attack). This is indicated by white aura around his sword.
- A successful parry stuns Maliketh for few seconds and deals minor damage to him.
- There is some risk that the player will receive damage despite a successful parry.
- Poise can be broken which allows for a critical attack (both phases). Poise: 80.
Absorptions
- Phy (Standard): 35
- Phy (Slash): 35
- Phy (Strike): 35
- Phy (Pierce): 35
The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if an absorption is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number = less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 means the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.
Resistances
Poison: 351
Scarlet Rot: 351
Hemorrhage: 575
Frostbite: 575
Sleep: Immune
Madness: Immune
Death Blight: Immune
The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Maliketh, the Black Blade fight strategy
Fight Overview
You begin the encounter fighting his Beast Clergyman form. The fight takes place in a large round arena, with tall pillars throughout and a dangerous open pit around the edge. It is highly recommended to move forward into the arena as soon as you enter through the fog gate. Don't let the Clergyman engage you on the short bridge right in front of the fog gate. Beast Clergyman has several low horizontal swinging attacks, most of which you can safely jump over to close distance and counterattack. The boss also has several rock sling and air burst ranged attacks, all can be dodged by rolling forward through the animations. Occasionally, Beast Clergyman will plunge his dagger into the ground, ripping large boulders into the air at the end of the animation. These boulders float above the camera and crash back down, the damage is avoidable. Strong attacks allow for a posture break, where the player has enough time to riposte and land a heavy attack while Beast Clergyman is in recovery animation. Posture break buildup carries over into phase two, which can score you an easy riposte during the most dangerous phase of the fight.
At roughly half health, the second phase of the encounter begins. A brief cutscene takes place and Maliketh, the Black Blade is revealed. Sword damage from Maliketh will temporarily reduce your max health, and cause a damage over time effect. Many of Maliketh's sword attacks cause frontal cone area of effect damage that can be avoided by staying under and rolling behind the boss. Maliketh will jump high into the air and use the pillars to travel around the room during this phase of the encounter. While airborne, Maliketh uses the Black Blade to sling multiple black blades at the player, which may be dodged by rolling.
If Maliketh jumps into the air and plunges the Black Blade into the ground, be prepared to avoid the delayed explosion by rolling or moving away. Otherwise, pushing forward into melee range is recommended at all times. Maliketh is more likely to use regular sword attacks while in melee range, these attacks are easier to avoid. Many of the frontal cone Destined Death attacks can be avoided at the feet of and behind the boss. Strafing forward and to the right of the Maliketh will cause some sword attacks to miss completely, leaving openings to score damage. You can also roll into the boss to avoid the 360 spinning attack, and be in range to retaliate. Maliketh is most dangerous at a distance, as the boss is more likely to use ranged Destined Death attacks. Press forward and close distance as often as you can.
The Best Tips for Maliketh, The Black Blade:
- Use the pillars in the arena to block his projectiles if you need to heal.
- Practice posture breaking Beast Clergyman with heavy attacks to learn the requirements, then work on forcing phase 2 of the fight to start with the boss near a posture break. This will allow you to stun Maliketh early with only one or two heavy attacks.
- The Blasphemous Claw Item lets you parry Maliketh. Look for when his sword glows gold to see the cue.
- The Crimsonburst Crystal Tear can offset the damage-over-time effect of Maliketh's attacks.
- 2nd phase: It's possible to put his AI in "pacing" mode if you unlock the camera and position a pillar between you. He will circle around trying to find sight, and if you change direction repeatedly it stalls the fight completely. Delaying allows time for his HP defuff which removes max HP% (lasting 10-15 seconds) to wear off, and gives you room to plan the next move. This mostly works if fighting without summons.
Melee Users
A shield can negate his dagger swipes but be aware that his incantations will still inflict some chip damage through a 100% physical negation shield. His forward dagger lunge can be dodged by rolling into him, but be aware that he will back up a little bit with a quick sideways dagger swipe or follow up with Bestial Sling. His dagger plunge is easiest to punish.
A lot of his incantations have very obvious tells, usually involving plunging his claw into the ground. His Bestial Sling has him hold his claw across his chest, and can be difficult to dodge given how fast it comes out. Stone of Gurranq uses a slow projectile that can be evaded easily. Both Beast Claw variations are slightly delayed after he plunges into the ground, sometimes dragging along the floor, but have a blind spot right in front of him and can be safely evaded by rolling forward.
He doesn't take too much to force to his second phase. Stagger him with a few good heavy attacks and he can easily fall to the phase change threshold.
Maliketh is a lot more mobile and is more of a test of patience. However, he retains some of the blind spots of his first phase and will whiff if you get up close or behind him. He'll frequently start with a jumping wide slash that can be rolled into. A lot of his attacks will inflict a max HP debuff and a damage over time which can be lethal if his sword combos left you near death.
Try to stick up close or behind him while he's on the ground. Wait for him to finish his airborne attacks before moving to strike.
You may notice his blade glow gold during some of these attacks; these show that it can be parried with the Blasphemous Claw. Catch him on the descent and he'll be stunned for a long time.
Magic and Ranged Users
Use high-speed, low-recovery spells like Lightning Spear or Night Comet as your main offense, because the punish windows at range are fairly short.
The Beast Clergyman's attacks all have relatively short range, so if you can outspace him you have plenty of room for long-reaching projectiles. Use the pillars to create space if you need it. Bestial Sling is the toughest to dodge due to the speed of the projectile, and any one clipping you can interrupt your casting animation.
The Clergyman begins the fight by moving towards you. If you notice he's not at full sprint, you have the room to set up and unleash a Comet Azur or Crystal Torrent to force him to phase two right away. Incantation users can use this opening behavior to inflict Scarlet Rot on him with Ekzykes's Decay. If the Clergyman is going starts with a full sprint, you may not have the time to pull this off.
The second phase is a lot tougher due to Maliketh's greater reach and mobility. Refrain from casting while he's in the air and only do so right after you've dodged his attacks. Again, the pillars can block his Black Blade projectiles but don't hug them too closely as his slashes can clip through and get you.
Beast Clergyman, Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Side To Side Swipe | Swiftly swings his sword either side of him directly in front of him. | Either roll into or away from him |
Forward Ground Stab | Lunges forward a short distance to stab the ground | Roll to either side (preferably right) |
Bestial Sling | Collects rocks from the ground with his hand and throws them at the player | Expect either this or a boulder toss, dodge a second before they hit you due to the speed |
Bestial Sling (Variant 2) | Swiftly circles the player and collects rocks while jumping and throws them as soon as he lands | Roll a second after he lands from his dash |
Bestial Sling (Variant 3) | Executes a Forward Ground Stab but follows it up with a Bestial Sling directly afterwards |
Dodge directly into your left (his right) to avoid the rocks |
Beast Claw | Raises his hand over his head and slams into the ground, once he withdraws his hand shockwaves travel towards the player | Avoid dodging to the side as it can catch you easily. Roll forward into his blind spot instead. |
Lunge Swipe | Very similar to the Bestial Sling Variant however he doesn't throw rocks but swiftly slashes from his left to his right | Stay a mid-long distance from him or dodge into his belly |
Ground Rupture | With both hands he reaches up and grabs the ground, bringing up huge chunks of earth which crash down after (similar to Fallingstar Beast), however he occasionally follows this attack with a Bestial Sling so be ready to dodge | Observe the ground as he hits the floor, there should be visual columns of dust, this is where the rocks will come from so try and stand somewhere with no dust and keep rolling away from him |
Stone of Gurranq | With one hand he grabs a boulder and chucks it at you in a straight line | Easily dodged by rolling forward or to the side |
Quick Slash | Much like Sif from Dark Souls 1, he quickly slashes in front of him and backflips away from the player | Try and block it with a good shield or simply roll into or away from it |
Sword Drag | Stabs sword into the ground and drags it around him from right to left | Stick to his left hip and roll into his left buttock to avoid the blade |
Gurranq's Beast Claw | Similarly erupts Beast Claws from the ground however, these travel in a circle around him, tends to occur more at close range | Roll forward into his blind spot or jump over the ground-based projectile |
Slash and Stab | Quickly slashes in front of him followed by a forward stab | Either block with a good shield or simply dodge to the right |
Maliketh Attacks And Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Flip And Slash | Often the opening move to the second phase, he flip towards the player with a low sweep of his sword, may often follow it up with another swipe/ overhead slam | Roll through the first slash and dodge the slam to punish. Maliketh appears to always start phase two with this attack. If you simply hold forward at the end of the cutscene, you can safely position yourself behind him to punish as the attack ends, no dodging necessary. |
Piledriver | Very similar to Black Blade Kindred he jumps into the air and lands on his sword which is followed by an AOE explosion | Dodge the initial slam and roll away from the boss |
Black Blade | Backflips into the air and slashes his sword at the player, blades will shoot from the blade towards the player at high speeds, can vary from 2-3 blades however, If it is 2 blades he will most likely follow with a Piledriver which has an AOE. If it is 3 blades he will charge towards player and perform the "Double Spin" attack while moving through the air. | Do not panic roll, wait for about half a second after the slash begins to start rolling and count the slashes. If it is 2, copy the advice from the previous row. If it is 3, roll towards Maliketh when "Double Spin" is about to hit you. Since he is moving during the attack, the second slash will not hit you. Be careful not to stand close to an edge, since Maliketh will simply stop moving forward making the second hit near impossible to dodge. You can parry this attack on the descent with the Blasphemous Claw. |
Quick Black Blade | Quick flip with a single Black Blade | Simple to roll through or block |
Roar | Roars at the player which knocks them back a few meters | Keep your shield up to reduce the impact, no damage is taken though |
Destined Death | The most punishable attack, he slashes the floor in front of him and follows it with a overhead slam leaving his back exposed | For the swipe simply roll to your right and get a hit or two and for the slam roll into his rear to avoid it and punish carefully. It's best to wait a moment to punish in case he follows up with his deadly variant described below. |
Destined Death (followup) |
Same as previous row however, he follows with the blade circling himself twice and stabbing the ground in front of him, creating a cloud of slashes, rapidly cutting through anything in front of him. | If he begins to circle the blade around himself simply stay close to him and either block or dodge the swipes and dodge the stab and punish. If there is time, move behind him before the stab to avoid the slashes. |
Double Spin | Simply spins around twice with the blade in hand | Simply stay close and either block or dodge |
Slow Slash(es) | After successful parry, Malekith covers his eyes and performs slow slash (slashes, if player parried Piledriver attack). | Stay under him |
Maliketh, The Black Blade Lore, Notes & Other Trivia
- Voice Actor: Jonathan Keeble
- Maliketh was the half-brother and sworn Shadow of Queen Marika, to whom she entrusted the Rune of Death. Ranni the Witch stole a fragment of the Rune of Death to forge the daggers used during the Night of the Black Knives, causing a series of events that resulted in the Shattering. After which, she gave the Blasphemous Claw to her brother Rykard, to give him the power to challenge Maliketh.
- In order to ensure that the Rune of Death was never stolen (again), Maliketh bound the blade that contained it to his own flesh.
- Bug: If Tarnished dies during the second phase with the "debuff" on, they will not spawn with max HP. This applies to cooperators as well.
- Bug (rare): During the second phase, sometimes there is no music (probably related to co-op).

My different build thoughts on this guy:
As a mage, I hated this boss a ton. Keeps moving around and is way too intimidating for me to even know what's happening.
On my git gud strength build, I liked to git gud against Maliketh. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes a sweet dance and is satisfying to learn his patterns on attacks.
Bleed build well it was a short story.

What's interesting is I've this boss titled during the fight with three different names. Maliketh the Black Blade, Maliketh the Black Blade of Destined Death and Maliketh, Marika's Black Blade.

Easier than expected to cheese with Rotten Breath (even at low Faith) and hiding behind the pillars. Can be done in both phases but tricker in Phase 2 because of how quickly he can move around those pillars when he wants to though not necessarily difficult. Just fire the breath thru the pillars. Had to finish him off with a single blade hit though since it wouldn't trigger the DOT a third time. Wonder if he grew resistant. Recommend just doing it once per phase or perhaps just in Phase 2 since Phase 1 isn't too hard. No Ashes.

Where’s the “tiny health pool” im hearing about? Dudes pretty tanky for me

First 4 attempts I thought he was the first truly broken Fromsoft boss. Too fast, jumps too far and hits too hard. Then on attempt 5 I got the stagger in phase 2. Got him and he only got 1 hit one me the entire fight. Using RGS and GS double bonk. Turns out we're both glass cannons. He who bonked first won.

I like to think that this guys power was nito at his prime
just imagining nito oneshotting dragons with destined death seems pretty cool

A fun boss, but between his aggressive AI and the fact that he will 1-2 shot you with any hit he hits this sweet spot where he feels great to beat but is such a large wall to hit so close to the end of the game. He can be semi hard to predict sometimes and it feels like he has the same wind up for 2-3 attacks. I think this is where a lot of people get frustrated because you expect one thing but it’s not that at all. But for me if he either had the damage to 2 shot you, or the bleed/health reduction on attacks he would be more balanced, but not both. Obviously his combos should kill you but not every single attack (75 vigor and over leveled for the first time I fought him, still got 1 tapped).

How do you spell his name, I'm convinced it's Malekith, is it Maliketh or Malekith

An endgame boss in Elden ring that has super contraversial opinions on who likes it and who doesn't. Never seen that before...

His cutscene is the only one I don't skip on subsequent playthroughs. It's just so dope.

As a incantation/mage I used Lhutel the headless ashes, and only used Ancient Death Rancor in both phases (don't charge just use it fast) managed to get one parry with Blasphemous Claw. This was the run I killed him. Use the pillars to hide a bit, Lhutel gets aggro sometimes and then you can get a few casts in. One of the hardest bosses as a caster!

One big hit right in the face and his posture brakes.
Although is very hard to land that hit.
Very good boss fight

Dung Eater +10 is able to withstand Maliketh much longer and deal more damage than Tiche +10. Also have 1 or 2 FP Flasks and spam powerful Ashes of War (Bloodhound's Fang, Flame of the Redmane, etc.)

IDK why but I've never had a problem with this boss, one or two attempts and hes done. the hard part is the start of the 2nd phase just be ready with a roll followed by the Blaspemous Claw then punish

Me and tiche waiting for maliketh to finish his 74 attack long combo so we can land 1 hit on him.

I don’t understand the hate this dude gets, sure beast clergyman is rough but maliketh? He’s fine, he has plenty windows to attack him even with a big weapon and is fairly fragile compared to others
Of course this doesn’t mean he’s devoid of problems (life drain stacking, blasphemous claw being obtusely complicated etc.) but I’ve seen so many people say that he plays devil may cry with you it’s insane
How the hell am I supposed to roll away from Piledriver??? It's hits too far and I can do only 2-3 rolls before it starts. Even if manage to survive, the afterburn kills me in seconds

The ai feels super random in this fight. Some attempts it was rather passive, others hyper aggressive. When I finally beat him, it was because he was passive for a lot of the fight and it didn't feel like an achievement.
- Anonymous
I think I would actually say this guy is worse than malenia, at least she is an optional fight, this guy reduces max health, inflicts damage over time & has a lot of frame-perfect only dodges, 100% unfun

If you're struggling, I suggest you put the Blasphemous Claw in your pouch. That way, you'll have access to it and your Crimson Flask at all times. All you'll have to do then is wait for the follow-up attack to his three sword beams or any other attack that can be parried. The window you get after that is absolutely massive, meaning you'll probably only have to pull it off two times. I'm convinced this is the intended way of beating him.

Kind of glass cannon-y boss, he can die pretty fast against a good weapon if you're lucky, but at the same time he does a shitton of damage

I found this boss to be very nice, specifically his first phase.
The series of attacks looks great, it’s a high pace, while still being intuitive to dodge everything, but still challenging enough to be tough the first time you fight him.

Scarlet Rot saves the day again. It's pretty much the only middle finger you have against the cheap artificial difficulty that passes as enemy AI in this game. Sit back and watch this fool rot like my faith in the FromSoft devs.

Yet another boss who gets absolutely obliterated by pest threads. I genuinely didn't think they'd work against him, since he's not very large, but at 60 fth with godslayer seal +10, they averaged 1.5-2k damage per cast depending on positioning. First phase is super easy, just dodge and spam, you've got enough time to get a cast off in between swings. In the second phase, bait out the plunge, and you can get 2 casts off before he recovers for 4k damage. And if you're using mimic tear, it's even easier. Went down in less than a minute.

yo...fromsoft can eat a bag of ****s with this guy. what a bs cheese fest. can someone explain to me how this lumbering **** can run clear across the whole arena and hit me 3 times before i can manage to get the bell out of my back pocket?
i mean really? can i get a goddam SECOND to prepare? ffs. its one thing to have to enter the arena before we can really do anything...its a whole other thing to enter the arena and be dead almost before the area even loads.

One reason why this boss is bad is the transition to phase 2. Once it starts, Maliketh will immediately attack the host nonstop and the host won't have any time to heal or buff. This is bad for summons since they can't protect the host for 20 seconds because they're very far from the host. Just hope that the host is good at dodging attacks.
- Anonymous
Could be super fun as a separate fight instead of just a phase 2. He deserves a full healthbar, and Beast Clergyman feels likes it's just there to waste your time
- Anonymous
I feel like this boss fight would have been better if it wasn’t such a blatant rehash of ludwig

The cutscene and the soundtrack going with the transformation is really amazing

If you're doing co-op and the host runs past the Tree sentinel without fighting him to rush past the fog door, dont follow them. The sentinel will blow fireballs your way and give you not time to drink your physick, use items, etc. Instead, just run back to the martyr's effigy and let your host solo an increased health maliketh on their own. Its what they deserve, after all if they want to pick and choose which enemies to fight they'll understand if you do too.
(Seriously people, at least 1/3 of the hosts i get summoned for do this. You know the saying "you dont have to run faster than a bear, just faster than the guy who's with you"? That's what you're doing if you do this. You *have* to fight the sentinel if you want your cooperators to have a full health bar at the start of the fight. Just fight the damn sentinel. Its not that hard and even if you have trouble thats what your cooperators are for. This goes doubly for anyone wearing a white mask, who I've noticed try to skip it more often than others. Yes I am salty how could you tell)

the best way to cheese this boss is with a dagger of your choice, put flame of the redmanes on it (he only has 80 poise, redmanes does 40 poise damage) get your crit, and stagger loop the boss. use assassins cerulean dagger talisman to get an endless supply of FP.

When I first encountered this boss I was trying alone. After 10 times of dying I just summoned +10 Mimic Tear. Good bye boss. It was my first play. However… NG+1 I tried again without summons. No luck. Okay, I called my best friend once again his name is Mimic Tear. I beat the boss ass once again but 3 tries with my summon. And I learned something very good after NG+2 Very easy boss. You need a Black Knife Tiche +10 summon, a Black Knife dagger at +10 and just spam the weapon special attack. Basically use his special “death flame” health % attack against him. He will sure not like it and gonna just burn to death.

Oh hes strong against ice? can't say i noticed...
Still recommend people to try the ice blade spell found towards the end of Rannis quest against him, the ice waves off the spells swings can hit this guy when jumping around.
So with both player & boss dodging around and shooting waves of nasty stuff at each other it's quite a odd boss, Felt more like a evasive dps race than a fight to me.

im ng+3 and this guy still destroys me with 60 vigor and full prelate armor. not even gonna think about ng+4, i don't want to fight this mf ever again. had to switch to the old cancer garbo magic RoB to even touch this guy. can't get any openings, and when he does, he's on the other side of the small ****ing arena
I finished Elden Ring and now that i've beaten all the bosses, it turned out that Maliketh was the most difficult for me of them all if I go by number of deaths.
If you are having trouble on him just know that you aren't alone!
- Anonymous
This page also claims that Gurranq is Maliketh, but after defeating Maliketh you can still find Gurranq at his usual spot if you haven't given him all the death root.
So unless this is some mistake on FromSoft's part, Gurranq and the Beast Clergyman are two different individuals, with Maliketh likely just using Gurranq's get-up (which might have been a common sight in Farum Azula) as a disguise.

People saying this is the best From boss ever, etc. are clearly high. The lore and design are great, but the actual boss mechanics and area are complete trash.

Died several times - then I used the blood blade and a mimic, and it was over in 30 seconds.
- Anonymous
I managed to kill him yesterday. I guess I was a Little overleveled at 150 cuz I cleaned Haligtree first.
Moghwyn sacred Spears and mimic trivializes this fighter and after death of my summon at 2nd phase I switched to occult Godskin Peeler with B/S to gain extra mobility as I didnt know his attacks. With such setup it was very easy to avoid his attacks and Punisher him while powerstancing with EP. Fun fight but not that hard as I managed to defeat him in 3rd try.
- Anonymous
Unfortunately I never got to experience his second phase fully. Shouldn't have summoned the mimic. It took 5 seconds after the cutscene. I just spammed serpentbone blade's l2. I was at rl 150 though, so probably over leveled for him.

He has an unfortunate allergy against being hit multiple times by jumping attacks made with some Greatswords...
Lucky I may have been but 4 of those procced Frostbite + 2nd Phase, the fifth broke hgis poise, 6+7 took most of his health and after surviving his relentless attacks (cost me most flasks) the 8th killed him.
Not easy, quite intense but dead is dead ^^

Stand behind pillar, hit him with Rotten Breath 1-3 times until it procs. Stay behind pillar. Second phase, same thing, just with more rolling (or Bloodhound's Step if you have it). I didn't even have to swing a weapon at him.

Bro, i'm crazy high strength with crappy other stats so I do a ton of damage but im slow and low health so I die fast if I can't kill in a few hits

Maliketh is the one boss stopping me from beating the game. I don’t like whoever made his attacks.

Saw an odd bug happen a few times now when being summoned to help out in this fight. As soon as the Host enters the boss arena the Phase 2 cutscene starts and Maliketh starts the fight in Phase 2 with a full HP bar, completely bypassing the Beast Clergyman Phase. Was confused and saddened seeing my Hosts get killed by an HP buffed Maliketh right from the start so I figured I'd share the info. This was on PS4.

Now I know why he looked so cool. This guy's second transformation is a power ranger pumped up on metal.

he's doing some spiderman **** with the pillars before dropping a 50 hit combo on you. this fight just fcks u up if you have bad rng. he's easy enough to dodge but you can't see what he's doing cause of the camera and the lock on just disables behind a pillar. and when you die, you get to keep the reduced max hp even when you respawn so that sucks. guess i can't double colossal hammer this one

Don't forget your blasphemous claw, the only way to beat him with style. Also on a side note, it's extremely effective. Without it, if you use slow *ss weapon(s), it will be a pain in second phase
