Dialogue in Elden Ring: Merchant Kalé

Introduction

  • You are a Tarnished, I can see it. And I can also see... That you're not after my throat. Then why not purchase a little something? I am Kale, Purveyor of fine goods.

About Kale

  • I am of a nomadic people. Selling wares as I travel. The land has been tainted by madness since the shattering of the Elden Ring. It's only Tarnished like yourself who keep things from drying up entirely. Let's say you're a very welcome customer.

Recommendation

  • You know, if you can spare the runes, you should buy yourself a crafting kit. A crafting kit allows you to make basic items on your own. Essential really, if you intend to survive out here for any duration. The kit costs a bundle, and I admit, I do take my cut. But the important thing is that you survive. Every customer counts, after all.
  • I'm glady you took my warning to heart. You've made an excellent choice. (after you buy the recommendation)

Small Talk

  • There are other of my peoples who yet survive in these lands. If the mood takes you when you meet one, then offer them some trade, won't you? My people, wanderers all, have long been spurned by the grace of gold. Which is why we cannot settle, but instead are forced into this pitiful, unceasing journey. But thanks to that, things are not so different for us now, though the Elden Ring is shattered. I think this makes us kindred spirits of sorts Your people, the Tarnished, and mine.
  • Perhaps you don't need to hear this, but... See that no harm comes to my kin. We have a saying, we wanderers. Lament not your solitude. Expect no sympathy. No regard. Nothing. But if anyone dares harm us, show them no mercy. That is our code, so to speak. Just the way we are. Deeply... unforgiving.

Howling in the Mistwood

  • "The howl of a wolf, in the Mistwood...I suppose he must still be skulking about...Mmm, I know. Why not meet him for yourself? Next time you hear the wolf's howl, make this signal right under the source. Oh, don't fret, there is nothing to fear. I just have an inkling the two of you might hit it off. "

§About Blaidd

  • "Oh, then you met Blaidd, did you? Wonderful. I'm glad I pointed you in his direction. He's boorish, blunt, and couldn't find his nose with both hands, but he's a good egg. I think the two of you are sure to find the best in one another."

When attacked

  • I knew you for a highwayman all along. Then it's time you learnt a lesson. Our people will not stand for your barbarism!
  • (On player kill) Is that all you were, mate?

When Killed

  • Is this... how it ends? I'll never find...

Other

  • Wait, weren't you? Well, you're back... Care to buy something?
  • What is it? Still going to purchase something?
  • Good-bye, for now.
  • Goody-bye. Nice to do bussiness.

"Did you see what they did to my ancestors?"
"The whole clan, buried alive. Sick. Maddened. Husks of themselves."
"Have you heard their moans? They're hardly human anymore."
"They think that we worship the Three Fingers, that WE call the maddening sickness down upon them!"
"Well, if that's what they expect from us...THEN THAT'S WHAT THEY SHALL GET FROM US!"
"The world of grace and its people should have been content to see us sink through the cracks. But to have intruded upon our solace...To have broken us upon their very whims...I'll never forgive ANY of you."

Killed this idiot because he wouldnt give me the gesture after killing Radahn. One job you dingus, and you couldve lived. One job. Hate these quests.

Shouldn't it be Kàle instead of Kalé considering how his name is pronounced in the game? Literally unplayable Fromsoft...

            • Anonymous

it would have been interesting if he said something about your character's frenzied eyes, but nope. I love him but he kinda becomes a nobody after talking to him enough times, maybe the whole point is that these merchants travel without making bonds with nobody but Kale feels different from the rest. He is a friend to Blaidd and to us and he is a survivor of one of the most terrible events of this world, why would From forget to deepen his dialogues is a mystery to me.

Imagine if he actually became a boss fight upon killing any merchant. Or, if all the merchant’s guild would start invading and pursuing you throughout your play through if you killed any of them.

                • Anonymous

Not sure what triggered it as it isn't listed in his dialogue on this page, but when I speak to Kale his introduction to me is "Ah, it's you again." followed by "Always a pleasure. Care to purchase anything?".

pretty useless, like every one of these merchants. kill him and every other merchant, give the bells to granny. you won't miss anything and will save a lot of time

                    • Anonymous

Does anyone know Kales connection to Blaiid? Kale implies that he hasn't seen Blaiid in a long time, and Blaiid calls him a "busybody". Was Kale Rannis secretary or something?

                      • I was wondering why Kale in particular has a name while all the other merchants don't. I guess the cut content answered my questions lol.

I think from what I understand, you help Kale find the Great Caravan, only to find out that said caravan was wrongfully accused of heresy and buried alive deep under Leyndell. What's left of the caravan are the burnt bodies of merchants, and those who yet live sit idly or wildly attack anything with the flame of frenzy. One even plays a haunting melody, probably reflective of the tragic and cruel fate of the merchants.

Kale sees this, becomes REALLY pissed, and then maybe after you inherit the frenzied flame, Kale succumbs to it?

I'm willing to guess that at the end of his questline, accepting the frenzied flame would come with a neat emotional incentive to do it for Kale and the caravan because they've been though some ****, so burning the world is pretty understandable. Either way, it would've been pretty neat to have Kale's questline put in the game.

I wish if you bought all limited stock from the other traveling merchants he’d have some special dialogue or something.

                          • Anonymous

I wish his' quest was in the game. If you kill him he even says "I'll never find..." and it just ends from there. So you'd think that means he's looking for something and you as a player can help him find it, right? But... no? I guess he's just going to sit there through the whole game allowing one side of a huge part of the story to be removed

By leaving "I'll never find" Fromsoft clearly shows they removed his' questline which to me destroys his' character as a whole.

Throwing his' questline out of the window makes it less impactful to arrive where all the mad merchants were imprisoned. If you actually got the chance to have more time with Kale you would be more invested in the merchants, but you're not. Heck, why is there no consequences for actually killing the mechants when even he himself almost proclaims of it?

All I'm wishing for is Kale's quest to be restored, I find the merchants to be very interesting and the one questline that actually talks about to them got removed.
Reward: Kale's merchant weapon and outfit (Something new as well?).

Worst part is, Kale as of right now is not a needed character as soon as you start the game you can kill him and nothing would change at all. It's just sad ):

                            Give back quest!

How are we supposed to know to ask him about the howling in Mistwood, aside from looking it up?

Also lol at the roleplayers downvoting comments asking about what you get for killing him, because "he's a bro". Grow up people.

The fact that you can't adjust the color of the nomadic merchants set to look like Kale's is an unforgivable crime, LET US HAVE SANTA CLAUS DRIP DAMMIT.

Cut Questline about a “Dreambrew” that lets you give it to Kale to see his dreams. Apparently he dreams of the Frenzied Flame as well.

Kalé doesn't sell the Chain Gauntlets to me; just the Gauntlets. The weird thing is that he seems to sell Chain Gauntlets to some of my characters and the regular Gauntlets to others. Does anyone know what's going on here?

Kalé...my first good friend in this hostile, deadly world. I buy all my arrows from him because gosh darn it, he's an oasis of friendliness in a land gone sideways.

If Kalé is aggroed (misclicked and used Infant Head where he sits) the event with Ranni still happens, right?

                                          • Killed this guy immediately hoping to get his Santa Claus armor, or at least his backscratcher. All I got was an IOU certificate ball so I could buy useless bolts from the Roundtable Grandma. Thanks for nothing *******

So what's with Kale's "Wait, weren't you? Well, you're back..." dialogue? At first I thought he was trailing off as if to say "Wait, weren't you dead?" Kinda acknowledging in a meta way about how we can die and come back... However on a new character he still says this to you when you return, even if you've not died yet. So, what was he gonna say? I really want to know!

I am just about to start ng+ so I decided to take him out just to see what happens. Not knowing what he will never find will eternally bug me.

Merchant Kale's quest involved him searching for band members. His final destination was the area before the Three Fingers. The mad nomad playing the instrument would join his band and they would start touring. There would be a long quest having the player clear out the 3 inaccessible arenas in the Lands Between so that the band can begin their tour. Dung Eater would have manned the concession stand.

                                                  • I love this dude, missed chance on a questline though, he did say he was looking for something and after seeing the whole area behind mohg the omen I would've liked to see what he would've done

After reading the description of the Nomadic Merchant's Set, my man was absolutely NOT kidding when he called his people "deeply unforgiving."

I have seen people wearing his armor set - like the cap and the cape. And it was his and not one of the other merchant’s armor because it was the Santa coloring. Any idea how you get them?

Also his last words with the "I'll never find..." seems ver mysterious.

there was a leak pre release that involved kale going to the royal capital and finding his people slaughtered. you diverged paths with him unless you were taken by the flames of frenzy. is that cut content?
