Ok hear me out, what if this is Ranni’s primal glintstone the soul of a sourceress? Just how Sellen transplanted her soul into a doll, although we tarnished used what looks like a bloodyied crystal. For Ranni without flesh her soul resides in a custom made doll in the likens of her mentor and the maker of the doll made it like one of those Russian dolls within dolls. Her clothes can be found earliest then the doll and once you have the key you can find her nude form soulless next to slain finger, until you give her the ring and cloth she’ll temporary return. If your slow on transferring Sellen’s soul you’ll be notified the stone react as if her body died, Ranni may had us fight shadows to distract us before the doll loses last of its soul and become just a husk.

Its Ranni.....she is a magican ....she can cast spells and stuff so its not really that hard to believe she makes herself small...even in the description its statet:

its because it IS ranni..Igji told us she went through rennas rise so did we and only AFTER you did the quest you can find her ( in small doll form) near the grave
(if you go there without the quest (with the sakopargh near Fia and godwyn the golden) the doll isnt there.

To talk to the damn doll, you must REST at Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace. Then you get the option to talk to the doll at the bottom of the lvl up options.

Good game, but the quest design is borderline draconic, unintuitive and impossible without a guide.

I just confirmed this today: you CAN start the conversation at the waterfall bonfire. I've never talked to her before, about killing the baleful shadow and such, and did it for the first time at the waterfall site of grace.
I also think talking to her is tied to getting the mark of death thing in the liurnia divine tower, before getting that and trying to talk to her I would only get a ''...'', but this needs confirmation

this item will not show up (presumably) if you do not find it before killing the associated boss. in my playthrough i defeated astel then i checked to see if it was there and it is not.

I have the theory that this doll is actually not inhabited by Ranni herself, but by the witch that trained her.

There's some hints towards it: The complete departure in personality, the fact that the doll is cool to the touch, the fact that she talks about Ranni as if she was someone else... there's a few hints.

I have no idea what the baleful shadow is about though.

I tried to talk to the doll at ainsel river main grace, just got "...". I didn't rest at the grace again or try a second time there. Next, I went to the Nokstella Eternal City grace and tried again there, and she told me to kill the baleful shadows.
