Moonveil is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Moonveil scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for dealing melee Slash and Pierce Damage in Combat. Its accompanying unique skill can also allow the user to draw the weapon at great speed for an instant slash attack and fires off a wave of light.

Katana forged of glintstone.
Masterpiece of a Sellian swordsmith.

Light enwreathes the blade when sheathed, explaining its Moonveil moniker.

Elden Ring Moonveil Notes & Tips

  • Weapon SkillTransient Moonlight - Sheathe blade, holding it at the hip in a composed stance. Follow up with either a normal or a strong attack to draw the blade at great speed for an instant slash attack. Both attacks fire off a wave of light, matching the orientation of the blade, with normal attacks firing a horizontal & short-range wave, and strong attacks firing a vertical & long-range wave that travels along the ground. The wave of light and melee swipe deal damage independently, allowing enemies to be hit by both for increased damage when in melee range.

The design of this weapon is clearly more intended towards the singleplayer aspect than online. Look, if they really wanted to make a Katana that acts like the Moonlight Greatsword but as a katana, why didn't they make it so heavies create these moonlight waves? Well...

      - Wing of Astel already does this without a cost when doing heavies, but does the lowest damage out of three and has a special weapon art on top of it
      - Dark Moonlight Greatsword has to buff itself with it's weapon art to be able to create waves and once it is buffed it's for free
      - Moonveil uses it's weapon art to do waves, but difference here between Wing of Astel and Dark Moonlight Greatsword is that it's actually quicker than it's light attacks and heavies

This is where the moonveil problem comes from, it's weapon art. Not only does it come out quicker than wing of astel's heavy attacks (Which is a curved sword), but it makes it deal higher damage per second when it should be the opposite.
Dark Moonlight Greatsword can beat Moonveil in terms of damage, but the problem is unlike Moonveil, Dark Moonlight Greatsword actually has to be charged.

So here's my solution to the Moonveil weapon art:

To get full power (Damage) you gotta hold down the weapon art and once you've sheathed your katana it will be powered up in three stages where it flashes a blue light near the sheathe at every stage.
The first glow will have 33 % of the damage and at second flash 66 % and lastly at third glow it will have 100 % of the damage (same damage as now). This would allows players to use this weapon with skill and not spam the weapon art as much.

The percentage I've given is just an example and not what it has to be. I just want this weapon to be fair and good at the same time because it's a really cool design and I don't want it's potential to be gone forever.

I believe a slight reduction in the weapon art is warranted. Either that, or make the weapon art consume more FP/stamina.

There does not need to be a massive nerf, but this thing is unbalanced for pvp purposes.

I just wish this thing wasn't so overtuned because it's so cool and fun to use, even at only +7 this thing shreds through level 150 hosts :/

          • Anonymous

The fact that i regularly see players with this AND rot breath is just a testament to how good both are, even with a horrendous stat spread

            • Anonymous

Host with Moonveil, a phantom powerstancing whips and another phantom spamming Bolt of Granssax's AoW. With this, Liurnia will be yours.

              • Anonymous

i keep forgetting this has innate bleed, not like anyone would dare attack with something other than an L2

                • Anonymous

Actually got a decent nerf as it’s still really good but not as bonkers of course that is unless you make a build all round it then it can have high 1 shot potential again on other players

                  • Anonymous

I get it, there's a lot to like about this weapon: it looks great, it has katana's moveset which is one of the best movesets in the game and it shoots light waves. I cant be mad at anyone beating the game with it. But of pvp it's just cheap. I met some honorable players using this thing at had some fun duels, but there's a reason why 9/10 players you encounter with it will just spam star shower, swift shards and L2R2 and never ever use any of the standard attacks. I even tried it out to see if I'm that bad or if it really is that op and sadly it really is that op.

I think all int weapons a very strong, DMGS has almost free beams with extreme damage and stagger, but slow, requires to rebuff every minute that annoying, and don’t fits all situations. Wing of astel have very strong aoe aow (especially big enemies) have nice beams, but it is very short, beams have low range and also requires some tactics, r1 strike particularly useless, also don’t feat some situations. Moonveil is universal weapon, have nice range as DMGS, nice speed like wing, aow have lower damage than dmgs and wing, but have good stager and both aoe and solotarget variants, have some bleeding and cool r2 poke. My favorite combo: starshower and than sprint with r2 poke. Or some arcs on croud and when they a close to you - l2+r1 to finish. One of the best weapon in the game and particularly best int weapon

I love this weapon for my mage runs. If you're reading this don't listen to these crybabies in the comment section. Use what you like and play how you like

Im tired of noobs using this damn weapon so im going to use it instead and show them how it feels to be on the receiving end. FIght fire with fire I say

Cool katana no doubt about it but the design they have is so boring. All gray, if the description says that it was made from glintstone, it would have been great if the handle was a lapis-lazuli blue tone, and the blade had the same shades (between the indentations that show the stones in the upper part of the sheet would have been great). Great katana, but with a very boring design.

The WA does good damage even with minimal stat investment. You can still do half of player’s health on a str/int build which is kind of dumb lol

viscous ganking weapon. the obscenely high poise damage of the L2 makes it very easy to combo into other hits from phantoms

Too many moonveil nerds in your invasions? I prescribe magic fortification. Usable on any build if you put on the two finger talisman, and with any 0 weight seal of your choosing (you don't need the stats for the seal to cast buffs). If papa Zaki won't do the balancing, then you do it yourself.

                                  • Anonymous

It's legitimately hard at this point to find an invasion where moonveil is not being used by at least one player. It's funny because there are many claims that this weapon is not OP yet everyone is using it. If it were like any other solid but not OP weapon it would be 1/10th as common as it is.

Damage def needs to be nerfed or increase the fp cost to 20 25. What are you talking about 15 20 fp cost for something easily gets anyone 1 or 2 shots, with that much range, stagger, and even the timing control.

                                      • Anonymous

Just make the projectiles do similar damage to Night Shard and don't touch anything else about this and it would be perfectly balanced imo

A lot of people will say they use this solely for its looks, and to that I say: I know you're lying. We all know you're lying. We know what you are, and that's someone who depends solely on its AoW to get through the base game and beat people in PvP.

                                          • Anonymous

Barrier of Gold totally nullifies this weapon, but nah people gotta have that extra 5% AR from softcapping damage stats instead of investing a few points in Faith to gain defensive utility, then they cry about getting 2 shot, lmao

I'm running a powerstanced bleed build with bullgoats+white mask and bhs because Youtube said it's the strongest PvP build but people keep pulling this out to counter it, it's really ruining my fun invading, please nerf

I am currently in my first playthough of Elden Ring and I found this weapon pretty early on and starting using it without knowing about it when I finally got the Moonlight greatsword I noticed how weak it was in comparison well turned out moonveil was just broke. I never knew it was this broken until I dropped it but to be honest a uchigatana can pump out the same with a frost AOW in early to midgame

                                                • Anonymous

I really wish for a nerf so I could use it in pvp without ruining fun of someone else. So far i used it only once and i melted the poor guy in 2 seconds after i decided to try out the skill

                                                  • Anonymous

From a PvE perspective this thing is pretty freaking dope. From my PvP perspective most who used this were strangely squishy and had poor weapon art timing.

                                                    • Anonymous

Absolutely cheap, it can be managed if your dueling 1 vs 1 if you don't make "1" mistake. The damage is insane at high levels and can easily take 80% of your health or more with just one hit. Definitely a ganker's weapon and a troll weapon. Damage needs to be nerfed.

                                                      • Anonymous

I was a Rivers user but now that it’s nerfed I switched to this, and when this gets nerfed I’m going to switch to Seppuku, and when that gets nerfed I’ll switch to Vykes, AND when that gets nerfed I’ll shield poke with fingerprint. It that gets nerfed I’ll just quit because I’m trash lol

                                                        • Man, I really hope they nerf this because I justed started my first ever spell caster playthrough and decided I want to use this without feeling scummy. I've seen how this thing invalidates the entire game and I don't want ruin my first experience playing a spellcaster. Also I'm not even gonna start to talk about how unbalanced this is in pvp.

Need a good estus punish? L2 vertical slash. Menu punish? L2 vertical slash. Gank spank? L2 horizontal slash. Need a true combo? Use an offhand trina sword and then R2 vertical slash. Still somehow not doing enough damage? Put on Rogier set, shard of Alexander, and magic scorpion charm. Absorption doesn't mean **** if you can oneshot people from 10 feet away

                                                                the AoW is ridiculously overtuned.
with a good int/dex build, you can pump out 1500+ damage per AoW R2 with little to no set-up or status build up. an absolutely absurd amount of damage for 1 hit in PvE and PvP

                                                                • I'll be honest. IDK how good Moonveil is in PVE, but currently this weapon is literally broken in pvp and just about every mage and their moms use it. The mages that don't use it are infinitely easier to beat, at least from my dueling experience, I'm just saying the truth.

What makes Moonveil broken you might ask? Because the weapon art is literally Unsheathe ( Which is already a very good AOW btw), except with basically 5 times the range and practically the same damage.

In before someone downvotes my comment saying "Hurr Durr Moonveil is easy to dodge" Well no ****, everything is easy to dodge if your actively looking out for it.

The thing is Moonveil's AOW is so fast and has so much range, that it's literally "punish everything button" Opponent whiffed an attack? Moonveil. Opponent is trying to cast a spell? Moonveil. Opponent is trying to drink a mana pot? Moonveil. Opponent wants to trade? Moonveil.

Essentially the weapon art forces you to play extremely passively, unless you want to get two shotted by it. You know what happens when you play passively vs a mage? You get spammed by sorceries. Pair it with the fact that most mages that use Moonveil are the same sweats that also wear full or almost full Veterans set, and it becomes nearly impossible to outrade them.

Basically for a single weapon, Moonveil puts far too much pressure on your opponent. I imagine it's gonna get ROB treatment in a couple of patches.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Started a tongue playthrough on my ng+ earlier today. I'm around SL 150. So far most invaders have been using this sword and either moderately, excessively or solely spamming the weapon art.

I don't care much about the aspect of 'is this OP?', especially when in this case invaders will usually end up in 1v3 or otherwise 1v2 situations so I can give a pass if they're bringing in meta builds. I just want to see more variety in what I encounter during this run, builds and playstyle.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Over 800 hours in this game and I don't understand why everyone complains about this weapon being OP, it does relatively low damage at melee range and the projectiles can be blocked or dodged easily, it's nowhere near the same level of broken as the instant bleed procs that ignore shields and can't be dodged or rolled through, in all honesty it's probably one of the most balanced weapons in the game currently.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                            ...unless?

                                                                            • Anonymous

I love how the complainers were ecstatic that the moonveil got nerfed and then once Arcane got fixed they moved onto RoB, then that gets nerfed and now it’s back to the moonveil. So once they nerf this you’ll all just move back to complaining about RoB or some other weapon. I’ll use ya’lls phrase here “git Gud “ and stop b****ing.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Something is usually good if it hits hard, hits far and/or hits fast.

Carian Grandeur can one shot people, so does blasphemous blade. They hit hard and hit far but they are concise attacks. Swift Glintstone shard hits far and fast but it isn't strong. Unsheathe is fast and strong but doesn't go that far.

Thats the problem of moonveil, this curved metal stick hits hard, hits far and does it stupidly fast. Thats why its a braindead weapon. YES you can hit hard with a lot of things in Elden Ring, but you usually need a setup for it, moonveil doesn't. Thats why gankers love it, they usually have one braincell amongst three of em anyways.

They should either nerf it so it takes time to Unsheathe, make the magic beam a lot shorter or make it so that it doesn't do much damage. I don't care which one, what do yall think?

                                                                                • Anonymous

the poise damage needs a serious look at. even at 61+ poise you can get completely staggered and subsequently blendered. If the poise damage was closer to something like carian slicer it would feel waaaay less cheap to fight.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I can understand the fuss about Rivers Of Blood, because that weapon was undeniably disgustingly overtuned, but this weapon honestly doesn't seem that bad by comparison, its damage is good but hardly seems like what i'd call "op", is all the hatred just based on it being overused?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Biggest crutch weapon in the entire game post patch 1.06. This thing has become insanely common now that RoB isn't as useful. There seems to be a solid 50/50 shot that at least one player will have it during any invasion. I honestly have to assume that the previous RoB users must have specced their builds into int/dex to use this or something. If it gets a proper nerf, my guess is that these same players will simply quit the game next as this is the last easily spammable OP weapon still around.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I fear the day somebody plays this weapon like a standard uchi with unsheathe and actively tries to hit the actual blade on the Ash of War. When min-maxed, this weapon is a straight upgrade assuming you play it similarly, but as you know most people just sit back and spam the Ash of War R2. The weapon is way more deadly than most think, and that is saying quite a bit since it is already a rather strong when braindead people use it. Also, the Ash of War R1 is lowkey better since nobody uses it and it comes out slightly faster than the R2, just understand it does less damage.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

im fine with it doing super high damage since most weapon arts do, but the spammable nature of it just outclasses every other tool in a wizards arsenal.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

You should use the Axe of Godrick instead and the tarnished will kneel before you and your golden greatness.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

It's a really good off hand weapon because it has really good dex and int scaling, which makes it perfect for flex builds. The AoW is stupid tho, they need to either give in more wind up, severely reduce the damage, or a little of both. It makes PvE boring and it's just stupid in PvP. I prefer using Uchigatana in my right hand for more flexibility with affinities and different ashes. Scholars Armament on Uchigatana makes this this look like a terrible weapon tho lol.

                                                                                                • I kinda wish that the weapon art of Moonveil wasn't just "Unsheathe but you fire off magic projectiles". Unsheathe on it's own is a really strong weapon skill, but slap a projectile on it, you've got the current state of Moonveil.

How I would balance it is that I would give it the Weapon Skill of the Frayed Blade in DS3. Light attacks unleash a flurry of attacks while heavy attack is the one that unleashes the magic wave (technically it was the other way around in DS3, but it makes more sense this way).

The light attack is pretty explanatory: It does 4 fast slashes that can also help you build up bleed fast.

The heavy attack should also function so that if you hit with both the blade and the projectile, you get the full damage output. Hitting with just the projectile should deal only half the damage. Also slow down the speed of the heavy attack as well as the speed of the projectile.

TL;DR The Moonveil could be a fun weapon to fight if the weapon skill was the Frayed Blade 2.0 as well as a decrease to damage output (maybe also poise damage). But tbh, Fromsoft would probably only decrease the damage output if Moonveil actually gets balanced lol.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Not sure if it is OP in PvE and if it is I would like it to be nerfed a bit for that, but in PvP this thing is not OP at all. Its ash of war is easy to i-frame through. Not sure why people complain about it in PvP. If it trivializes PvE it should be nerfed though.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Guess that's the only one of major spamming abilities which didn't get nerfed in patch 1.06, unlike RoB, BHS and SoR. Pretty sure its turn still comes pretty quickly. It'll be just enough to decrease dmg output on a distance, akin to ROB, and s'il vous plait.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Still one of the most overpowered weapons in the game. The weapon skill will knock out close to half of your health, even when not hit by the blade and with heavy armor and 60 vigor. Plus it's as fast as a light attack. All they need to do is slow the wind up down by like 30% and reduce the projectile damage by the same and it would be a balanced weapon.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

After playing with this weapon for several hours in PvE, I find it to be powerful, but kind of boring. Not sure what all the fuss is about. I suppose it's the altered fight dynamic in PvP, where you will only survive for a short time so you might as well use all of your most powerful abilities because there's no need to conserve your FP for more dangerous fights/optimal situations.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Now what weapon do you think the rivers of blood spammers are going to use now as a katana to spam kill people with their weapon art with in pvp !?!??!?!?!?!?!

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

I prefer using Transient Moonlight up close, hoping to score crits, then following up with a Cold Misericorde to the back or face, in some builds. Am I an anti-Sellian Sellian now, wielding a Moonveil and two-hand poking with a war surgeon's knife from the fridge?

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

What makes you a scrub is when you spam the AoW, and once you’re out of FP, you don’t have any backup strategy.

People who use Moonveil or RoB as some kind of one-hit win condition are the ones tainting an otherwise fun weapon to fight.

Sure, both can still be annoying, but at least their in the hands of competent swordsman instead of graduates of the Spam University.

I beat the game with a STR chad with dual claymore (not even greatsword), and it was as easy if not easier.
Since the nerf this weapon is absolutly not OP, and to get high damage with the weapon art you really need to focus all your build into it.
Also you need to be in rather close range even if you just spam the weapon art, while a INT user could just spam magic from afar.

When you combine both and use this weapon according to design it makes for a really cool experience. I got invaded by another Moonveil user though, and see this man spam the AoW without hitting R1 once made me sad.
