Moonveil is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Moonveil scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for dealing melee Slash and Pierce Damage in Combat. Its accompanying unique skill can also allow the user to draw the weapon at great speed for an instant slash attack and fires off a wave of light.

Katana forged of glintstone.
Masterpiece of a Sellian swordsmith.

Light enwreathes the blade when sheathed, explaining its Moonveil moniker.

Elden Ring Moonveil Notes & Tips

  • Weapon SkillTransient Moonlight - Sheathe blade, holding it at the hip in a composed stance. Follow up with either a normal or a strong attack to draw the blade at great speed for an instant slash attack. Both attacks fire off a wave of light, matching the orientation of the blade, with normal attacks firing a horizontal & short-range wave, and strong attacks firing a vertical & long-range wave that travels along the ground. The wave of light and melee swipe deal damage independently, allowing enemies to be hit by both for increased damage when in melee range.

If you're spec'd into dex and int, you can just freight-train through any and all PVE content with this weapon, even in NG+. I haven't found it too difficult to fight against in PVP - it's WA is very telegraphed, so long as you have your complete attention on the one using it. I will admit, this becomes significantly harder to do when facing gank squads - if you're flanked by someone wielding this bad-boy, watch out!

      • Anonymous

If you use it in pvp, rethink your choices. If you use it in pve, that’s okay, it’s a cool weapon and I understand why someone would use it.

        • Anonymous

When you start getting up into the higher levels, like 150 and above, moonveil weapon art starts doing over 1.5k damage a pop, its utterly ridiculous.

          • Anonymous

Screw the meta, I actually WANT to slice through the game's PvE like butter. There are far too many bland fights and bad overall moments, so much that I need an OP weapon to just get through them and get to the good stuff.

            • Anonymous

In a way, People using a vergil weapon, only becuase they crave having insane power and victory at all costs, is more fitting than any cosplay attempt at him.

              • Anonymous

i see so many complains, but i fought a few moonveils with an offmeta build and it wasnt realy all that hard. with 60 vigor and ok armor (not super heavy or anything) it did maybe 1/3 of my hp pool and it wasnt that hard to dodge either. EXCEPT invasions. In Invasions it is pretty anoying bc when you fight one guy and you cant react to the other person with moonlight then its realy realy anoying... but so is like 50% of regular pvp builds. and in pve this just doesnt compare to way better options. id make a spellblade without a weapon at all just carian slicer rather then use this in pve. the damage sucks in pve. gets out damaged by almost any other buildidea i had ever. even by a healing build using prayer strike.
                the pros are:
                weeb action
                range
                and speed

i wouldnt count damage as a pro bc it just isnt that high...
decent pvp weapon but ok to below avarege pve weapon.
and the poise nerf made it even more useless in pve. meanwhile rivers of blood is still dumb as **** and has insane dumb damage. idk why people are talking about an anoying weapon in 1vX scenarios when used by the X (group), instead of ****ing Rivers of god damn blood which is just op in every way.

No one asked for a poise nerf on the beam, give this dmg or speed nerf on WA. is it that hard to understand your own game?

                  • Anonymous

It’s funny how I see this more than RoB nowadays. Probably cause you can get it easier, and works well with magic builds, a crowd favorite build.

Even with the nerfs it’s still a monster in ganks due to its speed, damage, and range.

                    • Anonymous

Came here to both complain and praise this weapon. I think this weapon is cool for what it is. I've used it on a spell blade build I have and it's quite enjoyable in PVE. Melts enemys easy with Weappn art,has a magic projectile based slashes one with med-close range sweep and a horizontal slice with a lot of range.

BUT it is the ampitimy of OP in PVP. To the point where it takes almost zero skill.

No one ever actually try's to fight me with the regular sword itself, they just wait and use the weapon art to punish my pushes to try and attack. It doesnt help that at just level 65 it can almost one shot me if I'm hit by people around the same level as me.

Fighting against moonviel isnt fun or exciting it's just aggravating and boring. Run in try to attack, dodge because oppenet uses weapon art, then they run away and wait for me to aggressive again until eventually I get hit, die,or time runs out during the duel. God forbid their internet it worse than mine because when that happens the moonviel weapon art ends up being delayed by a second and I'll get hit even if I dodge on time.

I've even used it in PvP but the difference is I dont sit there and use Moonviel all the time. With my spellblade I power wield Carian knight sword ,Night and flame. Have carian staff in left for carian sword sorciers. I have moonviel as back up primary JUST so during the fight the opponent never will see the weapon art coming but I dont spam.

Sadly, I cannot find a single other weapon to deal with being rushed by heavy melee when on Sorcerer. There isn't a good spell to push them off. Slicer doesn't hit poise and Gavel will put you into a trade you might not survive. The Nebula skill has too much delay and Darkmoon comes out a bit too slow. Katanas seem far and away the best option and this one scales int, has a short-range and high-powered attack, and will force melees off you. It's basically perfect, and I say this as someone who doesn't like katanas in or out of game.

The only thing that might compete is a magic-infused, impaling-thrust Clayman's Harpoon. But even then Moonveil lets you change up to a horizontal slice and Harpoon will be predictable.

There's so many interesting weapons and ashes, and I'm stuck slotting this and a 1.5 weight dagger with Gambit (because Gambit can't be infused magic or cold).

                        • Anonymous

This weapon still continues to be too powerful. You can trade with colossal weapons with the AoW and do more damage too, and attack twice as fast. Don't understand why From is so hesitant to properly balance this thing, it's really one of the only weapons in the game that is significantly more powerful than everything else.

The only saving grace is that it is exceptionally rare to encounter a genuinely skilled PvPer who also uses this weapon beyond hardswapping to it, so the typical attack patterns are predictable.

                          • Anonymous

Thank GOD the poise damage was reduced. Now its no longer 1/3 of your HP into a another hit from a phantom because of the immense stagger. Its still way too strong, but much less deadly in a 2v1 or 3v1

                            • Anonymous

great hardswap option using this as a hardswap with int reqs quality cold build despite not being optimised still does 1/3rd of someones health and out trades whatever you use it into

Hey guys can someone tell me it is nerfed ? I want to try it especially in pvp but I don't want to be like overpowered or something

                                • Anonymous

Any suggestions on making a Vergil themed build?
The moonveil seems to be the best pick for the Yamato, but still looking for force edge and Beowulf stand ins, along with Armour.

                                  Thanks

                                  • Anonymous

It is quite amusing that the complete over saturation of this weapon makes it rather easy to fight, even when it is clearly over tuned. I want to say that almost every mage you fight has this, and when they all only spam the Ash of War you learn the timing and can punish it perfectly every time they attempt to hit you with the beam.

                                    • Anonymous

Probably the best AoW in the game right now: easy to land, and way to powerful for how fast it is. All other AoW with equivalent dmg simple aren't as fast or as easy to land. Thing is on the hands of lucky bad player you may as well find defeat but on the hands of a skilled one you don't have a chance against this weapon

                                      • Anonymous

I bet most of the player never saw its moveset especially it strong atack (Right Trigger) but I'm pretty sure everyone saw it's AoW plenty times

                                        • Anonymous

It already was many patches ago. Both its frequency of WA in successive attack and poise damage nerfed. It hasn't for a while say stun locked like it use to do with just one successful hit in pvp. Or after just two heavy WA poise break even the Stone Gargoyle bosses. Mind if used other spells in conjuction you can simulate the poise break of the original version.

if you treat this like normal unsheathe you can legit oneshot people lmao, how can anybody defend this weapon?

Only a FromSoftware weapon would be so good it upsets the community lol this thing is what some of us have wanted since DS1 Uchigatana.

If you think transcient moonlight is already super powerful, hear me out: skill R1 true combos into carian slicer or r1

People should stop giving this katana a load of crap, overall it’s a great katana maybe 3rd or 2nd best on the katana list, just below rivers of blood. I really like transient moonlight, it’s a great skill even with the nerf

                                                  • Anonymous

literally just nerf the poise damage. i dont care if it does a billion damage i just dont want to get blendered by it

                                                    • Anonymous

Unskilled moonveil users will spam the ash as a first-line attack. Skilled opponents will dodge out of the way every time and either punish during the cooldown window or wait for the incoming flask chug. On the other hand, skilled moonveil users will assess their opponent's moveset and use the ash to punish lengthy animations, flask chugs, and whiffed combos. The unskilled moonveil user is great because they are a delicious source of easy runes. The skilled moonveil user is scary because they have a quickdraw nuke.

                                                      • Anonymous

After reworking the status build up with 1.07 this thing has become meta main.
This weapon is just absurd. The Unsheathe + R1 or R2 attack comes very quick, has either coverage in a wide area or a focussed point and deals massive damage because it is magic and even high level chars dont have that high magic absorption and negation. And the damage itself is mostly magic aswell.
My 713 has 225 negation and 25.8% absorption (it is close to minmax between fashion and strong negation). Just for some numbers. Do the math and look whats left that deals damage.
On top of that you have the ticking timebomb of Bloodloss.

So you are outclassed with any weapon that has a slow recovery, are outclassed with any weapon that has more reach than a katana, are outclassed with Sorcery or Incantations, are outclassed with a tad latency and are outclased with a tank.

I conclude: This weapon is still way too OP. The damage of the AoW has to be nerfed a lot and by default it has to do no stance damage to break poise or inflict staggering

                                                        • Anonymous

Poor from soft made all these hundreds of weapons when they could have just made this and stopped. Shame really, would have got a dlc a lot sooner.

Past level 100 is just moonveil hell. You'd be hard pressed to find a world without at least 1 person mashing the L2 button to dust with it.

Good luck getting this at the beginning of the game like any guide/video says, the mofo who drops this is a ***** to deal with.q

If you like invading, be sure and prep your entire build around the counter to this weapon. And if you want to go META level 10 just use this thing and erdtree greatshield.
If not, plan on losing and being t bagged a lot.

                                                                • Anonymous

and then invaders can stop trying to one shot hosts
it doesn't even one shot them anymore cuz past nerfs

                                                                  • Anonymous

You know if you're at meta level... You should have 55+ vigor and half decent armor... Magic fortification can be run on any build too. And it's the best to pick because of the wide range of magic DMG and this being over tuned. It helps the sting till they inevitably patch it

                                                                    • Anonymous

Some ideas for a meaningful nerf

                                                                      1. Speed of blue wave reduction. This comes out way, WAY too fast and will hit enemy players in the air, on the ground, running and anything other than a roll. Reduce its speed.

                                                                      2. Reduce tracking. This WA also magically aims and moves towards whatever direction the enemies are about to move or even if they jump. I’ve been hit my this while falling to another platform mid-air when it’s launched from the top of a ladder. Way too good tracking.

                                                                      3. Give it some sort of blue hue or glow. Also it looks identical to other katanas until it’s too late. Give it a blue glow or something that way it’s obvious it’s moonveil and warns players to stop start passive playing.

                                                                      4. Range. The blue wave effect also travels way too far. It will go through walls, and windows too. Volcano manor I was blasted through the window from a moonveil sniper hiding behind a wall.

                                                                      5. Take magic reduction talisman more seriously. Having a big boost in magic defense + armor doesn’t not negate this WA damage much at all. I don’t know how it’s calculated, but moving it to a much more magic heavy damage instead of distance grenade launcher would help.

                                                                      • Anonymous

they really need to change its design, its so hard to recognize it until its up in your face doing a bazillion damage

                                                                        • Anonymous

it was technically nerfed in pvp, alongside all ash of war damage. I've noticed it doing substantially less damage, somewhere in the range of 2/3s what it originally was.

                                                                          • Anonymous

This weapon literally ruins this game.
Devs work hard to make all weapons work, but make a few way WAY BETTER. What were they thinking. Stop letting Miyazaki play test these games and let the player base do it.

                                                                            • Anonymous

make the projectile do zero stagger like carian nicer dicer ricer and maybe we can call it balanced. that way L2 becomes a trade button rather than a win button.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Sellian armament and shoots dark blue light waves, seems reasonable... Kinda want another one forged by someone else so you can have another moonveil with alternate light blue color!

                                                                                • Anonymous

The design of this weapon is clearly more intended towards the singleplayer aspect than online. Look, if they really wanted to make a Katana that acts like the Moonlight Greatsword but as a katana, why didn't they make it so heavies create these moonlight waves? Well...

                                                                                  - Wing of Astel already does this without a cost when doing heavies, but does the lowest damage out of three and has a special weapon art on top of it
                                                                                  - Dark Moonlight Greatsword has to buff itself with it's weapon art to be able to create waves and once it is buffed it's for free
                                                                                  - Moonveil uses it's weapon art to do waves, but difference here between Wing of Astel and Dark Moonlight Greatsword is that it's actually quicker than it's light attacks and heavies

This is where the moonveil problem comes from, it's weapon art. Not only does it come out quicker than wing of astel's heavy attacks (Which is a curved sword), but it makes it deal higher damage per second when it should be the opposite.
Dark Moonlight Greatsword can beat Moonveil in terms of damage, but the problem is unlike Moonveil, Dark Moonlight Greatsword actually has to be charged.

So here's my solution to the Moonveil weapon art:

To get full power (Damage) you gotta hold down the weapon art and once you've sheathed your katana it will be powered up in three stages where it flashes a blue light near the sheathe at every stage.
The first glow will have 33 % of the damage and at second flash 66 % and lastly at third glow it will have 100 % of the damage (same damage as now). This would allows players to use this weapon with skill and not spam the weapon art as much.

The percentage I've given is just an example and not what it has to be. I just want this weapon to be fair and good at the same time because it's a really cool design and I don't want it's potential to be gone forever.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I believe a slight reduction in the weapon art is warranted. Either that, or make the weapon art consume more FP/stamina.

There does not need to be a massive nerf, but this thing is unbalanced for pvp purposes.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I get it, there's a lot to like about this weapon: it looks great, it has katana's moveset which is one of the best movesets in the game and it shoots light waves. I cant be mad at anyone beating the game with it. But of pvp it's just cheap. I met some honorable players using this thing at had some fun duels, but there's a reason why 9/10 players you encounter with it will just spam star shower, swift shards and L2R2 and never ever use any of the standard attacks. I even tried it out to see if I'm that bad or if it really is that op and sadly it really is that op.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I think all int weapons a very strong, DMGS has almost free beams with extreme damage and stagger, but slow, requires to rebuff every minute that annoying, and don’t fits all situations. Wing of astel have very strong aoe aow (especially big enemies) have nice beams, but it is very short, beams have low range and also requires some tactics, r1 strike particularly useless, also don’t feat some situations. Moonveil is universal weapon, have nice range as DMGS, nice speed like wing, aow have lower damage than dmgs and wing, but have good stager and both aoe and solotarget variants, have some bleeding and cool r2 poke. My favorite combo: starshower and than sprint with r2 poke. Or some arcs on croud and when they a close to you - l2+r1 to finish. One of the best weapon in the game and particularly best int weapon

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

All gray, if the description says that it was made from glintstone, it would have been great if the handle was a lapis-lazuli blue tone, and the blade had the same shades (between the indentations that show the stones in the upper part of the sheet would have been great). Great katana, but with a very boring design.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Usable on any build if you put on the two finger talisman, and with any 0 weight seal of your choosing (you don't need the stats for the seal to cast buffs). If papa Zaki won't do the balancing, then you do it yourself.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

It's funny because there are many claims that this weapon is not OP yet everyone is using it. If it were like any other solid but not OP weapon it would be 1/10th as common as it is.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

What are you talking about 15 20 fp cost for something easily gets anyone 1 or 2 shots, with that much range, stagger, and even the timing control.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

We all know you're lying. We know what you are, and that's someone who depends solely on its AoW to get through the base game and beat people in PvP.
