Moonveil is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Moonveil scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for dealing melee Slash and Pierce Damage in Combat. Its accompanying unique skill can also allow the user to draw the weapon at great speed for an instant slash attack and fires off a wave of light.

Katana forged of glintstone.
Masterpiece of a Sellian swordsmith.

Light enwreathes the blade when sheathed, explaining its Moonveil moniker.

Elden Ring Moonveil Notes & Tips

  • Weapon SkillTransient Moonlight - Sheathe blade, holding it at the hip in a composed stance. Follow up with either a normal or a strong attack to draw the blade at great speed for an instant slash attack. Both attacks fire off a wave of light, matching the orientation of the blade, with normal attacks firing a horizontal & short-range wave, and strong attacks firing a vertical & long-range wave that travels along the ground. The wave of light and melee swipe deal damage independently, allowing enemies to be hit by both for increased damage when in melee range.

I've come to like this weapon over time, because most of the people using it at low level (including the overlevelled bodyguards) are free kills/estus refills if you know what you're doing.

      • Anonymous

The only people who defend the absurd amount of bs in this weapon are the ones who use it.
        - High burst damage
        - Almost impossible to react unless he spamms it
        - Very low fp cost
        - Can poise break you easily
        - To strong in Pve and PvP
        - Basically easy mode

This weapon and rivers of blood ruined the katana class reputation

I’m convinced that all moonveilers I fought are the same person but changes there username, since I don’t believe that many people use the same 1IQ strategy of just spamming the weapon art, run away, drink blue flask, repeat. Use different weapons I’m tired of f stomping this overrated, L2 stick for the 30th time, because the users don’t know how to use a damn sword.

          • Anonymous

Easy mode in PvE and PvP. The other player has to think and play well or he might end up losing 50% of his health to someone ligh rolling with Moonveil. Horrible weapon to fight against and such an insult towards Katanas.

            • Anonymous

Lots of buffs to stack on it, fun, quick skill, doesn't overshadow your sorceries, and makes Melania a whole lot easier without completely cheesing her. It seems to get a lot of hate, and I'm here to say that even if it's overpowered, (it definitely isn't compared to the weapons I've been using) it's fun af, and it isn't so overpowered that you forgo dodging just to spam the skill, say what you will about it, but it's hard to brute-force bosses with it, and that's enough for me.

              • Anonymous

When I grabbed it for the 1st time I was really disappointed that L2 R2 was a series of slashes like the Freyed Blade. 2 projectiles for 2 attacks is a little bit lazy. I guess it was easier to add magic waves to standard unseathe rather than make animation for something new.

This weapon, despite what it's users may feel, is busted. It's brokenness is as absolute as the Erdtree, as visible as the sun, as inarguable as the existence of the damn ocean. It's too fast, it does too much damage, and it's insanely easy to use. These things won't change unless From cripples it because it's INHERENTLY broken.

                  • Anonymous

FP cost should be twice what it is now, cooldown also doubled and reach shortened by about 20% on the vertical slash, then it would be one of the coolest, strongest and balanced weapons fromsoft has ever made for pve and pvp. so close to perfection, instead its just a pvp cheese unless the user is incompetent.

How to Run Moonveil: A short rando's guide.

At Level 150-160, the best Moonveil stats are always going to be running 70-80 int, the bare minimum dex required for Darkmoon Blade (Partially so you can use the casting speed with Radagon's Icon, and also cause Darkmoon Blade is a good partner to Moonveil in PVE, allowing you to conserve spell slots) And then run 60 vigor and around 20 to 25 Endurance if you want to wear armor with higher defense. The good thing about Moonveil is that it excels as a bleed buildup weapon against bosses like Adula and Mohg who tank Transient Moonlight like its nothing. People spam the Ash of War so much they forget that it is pretty much an Uchigatana at the end of the day and can be used to decently melee an opponent. Never forget to learn to roll and R1 attack, and then use the Ash of War as a surprise to throw off invaders. If you just do nothing but spam the AOW against invaders, if they're veteran players usually they will easily dodge as despite its speed its easy to predict you at that point, and the R1 AOW is near useless while the R2 AOW has too narrow a firing point to connect with those who dodge side to side. Use the cover of something like freezing mist and then whamo, catch them with an R2 AOW during a smoke screen. Like it or not, despite the hate on this thread, even this weapon requires skill, especially since most know what to expect from it. Know this, and you will even destroy other moonveil users, with the results not even being close.

The 60 Vigor is unconventional for most Moonveil Users btw, as most Moonveil Users are pure caster builds with low 40 health builds. However, the only spells you need on a dedicated Moonveil build is a phalanx type spell to keep your enemies from charging in and a good smokescreen and distance creator like Freezing Mist. Vigor and Poise gives your moonveil dedicated options, such as tanking a powerful blow to land an even stronger Transient Moonlight attack to outlast an opponent for the win, or r1 duelling with a player spamming the Tree Sentinel Shield. And furthermore, again, most players don't expect moonveilers to be so chonky outside of colleseum, where everyone builds nothing but chonk and fat fire prelate/Lionel mismatch pieces.

                      For Fashion:

                      Samurai armors for obvious reasons.
Carian Knight's armor matches Moonveil's color and theme so well, it almost looks like Moonveil was made for a Carian Knight by a smith from the Land of Reeds. Honestly it wouldn't be surprising if that is its actual lore. It is called "Moon" veil after all. If it were any other sorcerer it would be Star Veil or something, but it is Renalla who introduced moon spells into Liurnia's magic schools.

Rage commentators wondering why they keep getting downvoted by most of the community. Its because if you want to play what you want to play.. that's elden ring. Don't tell somebody how to play the game. Most invasions are unwanted. If they moonveil you as an invader.. well don't blame them. they didn't use taunter's tongue. If an invader moonveils you, what do you expect when you're 3 v 1? Yes its frustrating to get moonveiled. But its not pokemon. Souls games are about finding whatever means you can to trick or crush your enemies. If we're talking Colesseum, yes, Moonveil's just crazy in colleseum, but so are the giant poise fat prelate runners who take only 3 health from Moonveil attacks and Corpse Pile Spammers. Move on, take a breather, play another game for a bit then come back if it enrages you a lot. Its not worth getting mad over a weapon like this. Especially since it really sucks against bosses compared to other inferior in pvp weapons.

Imagine making Elden Ring and not adding such a cool weapon like Moonveil to your game because bunch of mentally unstable kids and tryhards don't want other people to have fun.

PvP has tons of unbalanced nonsense but this is absolutely one of the worst offenders. I don't blame people for using it but it never should have existed, at least not in this state. The AoW should have been literally twice as slow or more, it is way too fast with too much range and damage. You can't have EVERYTHING in a weapon like this, being able to punish your opponent for half their health for doing literally anything within 30 feet of you. The PvE suffers from stuff like this too. Part of the reason late-game Elden Ring is so cringe compared to other From games with stupid enemies like the Castle Sol ghost knights that teleport behind you into a 10-hit combo is because the player's power scales to such a stupid degree. You can't give the player access to Moonveil, Stars of Ruin, Comet Azur, Bolt of Gransax, Dragonsbreath incantations, Spirit ashes that solo bosses for you, etc. without either severely limiting the player's FP (which they didn't) or introducing ridiculously broken enemies to match the player's ridiculously broken abilities.

it's pretty mid in pvp considering you can acquire death's poker way easier than this and it'll absouletly destroy everything in pve that can be frostbitten.

if you want an int/dex weapon with projectiles that's like a billion times more fun to use and doesn't have the reputation of being used by slop-brained idiots like Elon Musk then go use the Wing of Astel!

                                          • Ah yes, the "I've benn stuck on Malenia for a month and do not give a single **** anymore" stick.
God, simply giving Unsheathe a projectile looks so cool, but I wish it had a better reputation. It just looks way too cool.

It's only saving grace is its weapon art. Every other aspect sucks compared to Wing of Astel. It's slow especially for its damage, it doesn't poise break, it misses easily, and it's power attack is so slow it can only be used on retarded mobs. Used it till I got Wing on original game now trying it again on NG+ and it's just stupid. Only good for skill spamming.

Can't help it but will always call any moonveil user a noob. I just can't take them seriously at this point. Skilled players just don't use moonveil, well maybe except for a hard swap into L2 from a different weapon to finish people off with a roll catch, but other than that I don't see the point.

I prefer Uchigatana with Carian Grandeur AoW. Pre-emptively cast Greatblade Phalanx, when enemy runs towards you charge up Carian Grandeur. The combo will stagger most enemies. Follow up with a crit attack. Works pretty well against many bosses as well. If not just spam spells and win.

I just find using something like the dark moon greatsword and suddenly switching to finish with transient moonlight to be a fun finisher

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Would've been badass to proc the -20% negation debuff on an enemy before finishing them off with an L2 plus bleed is hella over-used

                                                                          • Anonymous

This weapon is great for int/dex builds. It allows you to hit the boss during some of their moves, and deals a ton of poise damage, so you get a lot of staggers. If you want to go pure dex a regular katana or uchigatana will likely serve you better. It requires pretty high intelligence, so don't waste the levels if you aren't going to incorporate some sorcery on the side.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

Cuz u will be playing mostly pve and this weapon is not that great its int uchigana that is beter than moonveil. Its dmg js rly meh if you compare it to beter builds. I never tested her for lik llvl 100+ cuz i swap it to moonveil sword. Its degenerate in pvp tho and a nightmare to new players that want to get it.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                    • I feel like they should nerf the range of the WA, then I feel like this weapon would be perfect fair and not make me having a head ache every time I fight it. Then they just leave it alone.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I craved the strength and certainty of the weapon art. I aspired to the purity of the blessed L2. Your kind cling to your "honor" as if it will not...decaaay and fail you. One day, your "skill" will prove useless, and you will beg the L2 to save you.
But I, am already saved. For the spammer is immortal.

Truly, it takes a gifted individual to do the same thing over and over and over again with such refinement. Touché.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

It's just a fun weapon to use. it's cool and I get to run an Ichigo cosplay. if you have a problem with it blame Fromsoft. Nobody ever blames somebody for using Landorus in Pokemon tournaments when its "Uber tier" because Pokemon doesn't abide by Smogon. So why does From need to abide by some Fan tier lists? Also for invaders who get cranky for me using this? Well I didn't ask you to invade me.. and tell me you ARENT going to try something like leading me into enemies to kill me or shooting me with a bow from a billion miles away. Invasions aren't fair.. it's specifically built to troll, so excuse me if I get mad and start trolling right back. Deal with it.

People who use MV and just spam the ash of war: uncool, annoying, probably lives in there parents basement

The design is beautiful if you actually get a closer look at it, and so is the WA. The idea of a magic enhanced variant of unsheathe just makes sense. The little story you get in the description is cool. It’s just a nice weapon, so it sucks that you get viciously bullied for choosing to use it.

                                                                                                • Okay but it looks so cool I can’t not use it. Shame to all AOW spammers, but powerstanced great spears and multi shot sorceries are far worse than some katana kashinka; I will die on that hill with NO hesitation (for if you hesitate, you lose).

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Also even if I did still better than running attack powerstance greatspears and I WILL die on that hill zero hesitation (for if you hesitate, you lose)

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

You can literally trade with the hyper armor that this thing has on its ash of war REACTIONARY in PvP. It can poise break you easily, deals HUGE dmg and it 100% needs a nerf. This thing dodged any nerf way too long. You can not even punish the Ash of War with a good connection; give it either a higher frame start-up or a longer recovery time after using the Ash of War.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Sorry for the Sermon, but I feel this needs to be said given the extreme divisiveness over this weapon as well as another annoying katana (cough cough.. bleed bleed).

I honestly don't hate anyone who kills me with this in Invasions when I'm the invader. It's usually people who are not playing for pvp, so it is an easy answer to dealing with it. If I look at it from their point of view, they just wanna get through the area, that's why they summoned friends, and here I am being annoying and turning up. So they don't care about a fair fight they just wanna get past me and move on. And this is me turning up ON TOP of the fact the game is already legit triggering.. they probably died in this area 4 times and then finally made it this far. Also in PVE its a fair weapon that isn't much better than most other weapons due to bosses being heavily stagger resistant. Honestly Darkmoon Greatsword is probably WAY better for being good for both pvp and pve thanks to range, damage, status buildup and FP conservative so you don't even need to waste spell slots on generic projectile spells like comet or glintstone pebble.

Its people who use it in PVP arena that can be genuinely annoying. I can't fault them though. PVP is not balanced and never will be, and the same people who complain about this weapon are running around with Bleed Cheese Rivers of Blood. If you want a "Fair Fight" find a community that lives for that, enter their codes and only fight amongst each other, Don't blame that rando that comes in with Moonveil, Astel's Meteor and a Rayquaza or something. Nothing prevented them from bringing it and they probably don't know people hate it, and rightfully they don't care, cause they're not coming here to be meanspirited, they just wanna play Elden Ring. And I'm a Dex Main with Malenia's hand as a main, probably one of the most mid weapons with an AOW that can both be great or terrible depending who I fight. I've been parried to hell, wrecked with Death's Rancor, obliterated by Moonveils, ROB'ed to hell while spammed with bloodflies. You gotta learn to let go. Elden ring is the BIGGEST game on the planet, its already toxic as a result, don't add to it. At the end of the day, its a game.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Gonna be straight up honest. I use it for several reasons as my primary weapon as my "Blade of Ranni" character. Number 1.. I like roleplaying being Ranni's version of Malenia. Just as Malenia protects Miquella, I protect Ranni. Malenia is the faith variation, I'm the Magic Variation. She's his sister I'm her wife. She uses a gold blade I use a silver one..

Number 2: It matches my Carian Knight armor.

Number 3: The skill is FUN.. it's not just op.. its genuinely fun to Getsuga Tenshou ****. The weapon is one of the coolest looking ones in the game.

Number 4: ... PVP aside, I hate dealing with Invaders interrupting me when I'm trying to just get my randos to the boss room. This melts them quick while not eating too many of my flasks so I can MOVE on with my life. So if invaders decide to complain "You spammer" Well.. what did you expect? you invaded my world, I didn't ask you to come here. Eat the consequences of your actions in the form of transient moonlight.

It’s still broken but the players who use it don’t level vigor and die fast. I’ve literally one shot them at lvl125 with GH running r2… just 30str too. Ofcourse, in a duel, it’s not common to fight someone good with it… but a mage with 50 vigor and right stats can win trades against collosals by reaction L2. Every time. Hyper armor defense be damned. Missing the L2 is also a free r1 if someone tries to punish the miss. They expect moonveil users to panic roll but you can just r1 or L2 again. And again. And again. Just wait for your opponent to move to L2 then away. And people sprinting might not be able to press roll fast enough (same button as sprint!!!.) Katanas are just broken especially in 1.10, lightning unsheathe does even more damage than moonveil and frost spinning slash will frost, bleed and vigor check.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                                      • Honestly for me this katana is a biggest disappointment ever, I explored Lurnia, Limgrave and Caelid with Uchigatana but I got bored of it after that so for the Altus Plateau and Mountaintops of the Giants I've switched to Moonveil and I first it seemed like it was a actual upgrade compared to Uchigatana with it's weapon art... but I realised it's pretty much Uchigatana with weapon art that extends it's range and does magic damage which in it's own right is just "meh".

This was my first playthrough with Katanas (and first in Elden Ring) because finally there was good Ronin/Samurai drip in the game compared to Dark Souls 1/3, and in addition I've did multiple runs there with great axes, great swords&colossal swords and when I compare those times in DS with big ass weapons to my run with Katanas in ER then yeah I had much more fun in DS with big ass weapons.

Gonna try other katanas as well but so far meh.

Therefore, I use Wing of Astel instead when facing invaders, duelists and hosts. If I want heavy damage against NPCs and bosses, I use night comet.
