Nightreign in Elden Ring is FromSoftware and Bandai Namco's new ARPG focused on a three-player co-op roguelike experience. Elden Ring's Nightreign was announced during the Game Awards 2024 and will be released in 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation®5, and PlayStation®4.

Relationship Between Elden Ring and Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring: Nightreign is a spin-off of Elden Ring that shares the same foundational lore and setting during the period leading up to the "Fracture War." However, after the Fracture War, the two diverge into entirely separate worlds. Nightreign exists as a parallel world to the main game, offering a unique narrative that runs independently of the events in Elden Ring.

The decision to set Nightreign in a parallel world stems from a desire to respect the original story and the experiences players had in Elden Ring. Network Test Information

The Nightreign network test is a preliminary verification test in which the selected testers play a portion of the game prior to the full game launch. Various technical verifications of online systems will be examined by conducting large-scale network load tests.

  • Network Test Start: February 2025, specific date yet to be confirmed.

Playable Heroes in Elden Ring Nightreign

As indicated in an announcement article published by Bandai Namco, Elden Ring's Nightreign will feature EIGHT playable characters with distinct abilities and powerful ultimates. With the hype within the community, after Nightreign was announced, we did some digging and found some information that teases us souls fans of what's to come. At the moment we've only confirmed four characters, and two have been hinted where one hero can bend the element of earth to raise a pillar of rock and use it to their advantage to snipe enemies, while the other is a Summoner who can call Spirit Ashes that can assist in combat.

Wylder

This hero is described as an "all-round" hero who has a good balance between attacks, speed, and defense. Wylder is shaping up to become a character that new players can take control of for that balanced approach especially in the early parts of the game, while veteran players can potentially mold this character to fit their preferred upgrades and playstyle.

Guardian

Duchess

The Duchess is a character we'd associate with a Thief or better yet, an Assassin archetype. The Duchess features agile, light-footed maneuvers, quick attacks, and is said to be equipped with a unique quickstep ability.

What Should We Expect in Nightreign

Do I Need to Own Elden Ring to Play Nightreign?

No, Nightreign is a stand-alone premium-priced game, it is not Free-to-Play, and players do not need to have the base game, Elden Ring, to play Nightreign. It is also noteworthy to mention that Nightreign will not have battle passes or microtransactions and all content will be available from the start.

 

What is Nightreign?

Nightreign is a standalone survival action game that features cooperative gameplay, and it is a game that is within the Elden Ring universe. Nightreign is directed by Junya Ishizaki who previously worked on games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, including combat design for Elden Ring. If fans of Elden Ring are wondering if the legendary Geore R.R. Martin has something to do with Nightreign, unfortunately he is not involved and the game is not connected to the main story of Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree.

 

How does Loot & Equipment Work in Nightreign?

FromSoftware approaches the loot and equipment system differently in Nightreign. For each run, enemies and bosses that players encounter and defeat will drop randomized loot, there are also tons of chests and breakable structures where players can also find items. Normal or Regular items that players find are shared between players, and they can freely grab whatever item they loot. However, the more valuable or rare drops that can be acquired from defeating bosses are not shared.

  • Loot are categorized into different color-coded rarity (much like Diablo)
  • Weapons will have passives and random stats
  • Requirements of weapons will be based on level
  • There doesn't seem to be an equip load or weight management.
  • Simplified inventory system unlike in Elden Ring. An example is players can still dual wield weapons but they can only hold and store up to 3 weapons on each hand. What's interesting about this is that for the weapons you have equipped on each hand, the passive effects of those weapons will remain active.
  • Players can have their character freely equip any type of weapon, making it easier to build your arsenal on the fly and quickly adapt to what lies ahead.
  • When defeating bosses, players will have options of what rewards they'll receive for emerging victorious against the formidable foe.

 

How Will Multiplayer Work in Nightreign?

Nightreign is primarily centered around the 3-player co-op experience, there will be no PvP elements and no option for 2-player. However, players can choose to play solo with scaled difficulty. There will be no cross-platform play but it will support cross-gen play for PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series X|S users.

Communicating with your teammates is shaping up to be straightforward. There will be a map pinging system, Gestures will be available, and there will be no text chat, but there will be an external voice chat that is optional. When it comes to the elements of combat with your party, here is what we know so far:

  • Acquiring runes are shared
  • Players can revive incapacitated allies by hitting them

 

Bosses in Nightreign

One of Nightreign's focuses is facing a formidable boss when night falls, and by emerging victorious, players will be rewarded with rare loot or upgrades, and eventually reach the pinnacle to reach the game's finale. Nightreign will feature a large pool of random bosses for each day. Expect to face bosses such as the Centipede Demon who can detach its body parts, a three-headed Cerberus known as Gladius, the return of a Tree Sentinel, and Magrit who is described to be pursuing players around the map.

 

Map & Locations in Nightreign

The layout of Nightreign's map is somewhat "static" where players will come across a feeling of exploring familiar but new areas of an alternate version of Limgrave called "Limveld". Players can explore locations such as caves, towers, forts, jail locations, and ruins. Structures will seem to remain as where it is located across the map, however, as players progress and complete their runs, modifiers, and surprises will appear and change certain aspects of the explorable areas, making each run interesting and keeping all the players on their toes as they are faced against unpredictable characteristics. Some of those elements that change include:

  • Enemies and Bosses
  • Locations of items like weapons
  • Environmental Modifiers
  • A playable area that shrinks, known as "Night's Tide" and/or "Ring of Reign"
  • Environmental modifiers are said to be tied to character stories
  • Special Environmental Events like the impact of meteors, swarms of giant ants, and volcanic eruptions.

 

The Roundtable Hold Returns

Nightreign will still include a form of game progression through character or NPC story development. In Nightreign, players will get to travel to an "alternate" version of the Roundtable Hold. Just like in Elden Ring, the Roundtable Hold will serve as the main hub within Nightreign where players can meet and chat with NPCs, make use of various upgrade systems and additional features like accessing training grounds to familiarize themselves with combat and practicing the use of abilities.

  • Speak to NPCs at the Roundtable Hold
  • Use a Training Yard to test out combat and abilities
  • Find Merchant Shops and Stations for customization

 

Combat & Character Progression in Nightreign

As seen in the reveal trailer, Nightreign is a faster (turbo) paced version of Elden Ring. Characters in Nightreign sprint faster, and mobility/movement is enhanced, characters can mount short walls and even wall-run. A magical spectral hawk also allows players to fly or glide vertically, and Nightreign doesn't have fall damage. As far as Character or Level Progression, here is what we know so far:

  • For each run or session, players will start at Level 1
  • There will be no individual stats and leveling is simplified automatically
  • If players die, they will lose a level and drop their runes which can still be recovered
  • There will be no difficulty options
  • Defeating bosses rewards players with upgrades for their character
  • There are Relics that are similar to Bloodborne's Blood Stones. These are color-coded slots that provide character improvements, it is useful for different builds, and Relics are rewarded in both completed and failed sessions.

 

When will Nightreign be Released?

As of now, Nightreign is set to release in 2025. But looking at its production and after its announcement of the network test that starts on February 2025, it's most likely that Nightreign will be available between April and September 2025.

      Personally speaking, I wasn’t a fan of RPG’s until I tried Elden Ring (currently ~800 hours in lmao) so maybe I’ll become a fan of roguelikes with Nightreign? What I’m trying to say is that there’s nothing wrong with being open to change, folks. And even if you don’t like Nightreign you can always go back to ER.

      Besides all that, even if Nightreign turns out to be crap, I’m sure the modding community will have a field day with all the new stuff. ;)

        doomers and pessimists everywhere. it's unexpected to see that, despite all the goodwill gained and the quality of the products they've been putting out, that there's this many people who are distrustful. this new producer is not someone new- he's been around in fromsoftware for ages and worked on multiple fan-favorite games, so i think we all should have at least some faith in him.

        but regardless of the quality of the product, them allowing more of their developers to gain experience as a producer and learn some lessons will do the studio well in the long-term.

          It's a common misconception. People think only the Network Test is open at specific times of the day for like 3 hour periods. But it was stated in an interview that is how the actual released game is going to work as well.

            I see a lot of people debating whether or not the games a cash grab or if Fromsoft is being lazy this time around, but I’m convinced that by the time release rolls around, the debate will shift to whether or not it counts as part of the Souls Series, just like what happened with Sekiro.

                      Imagine some sort of versus mode where you could play as different types of enemies in the game against other players. You spawn in, try to escape from a dungeon while trying to overcome the traps and ambushes caused by the other team. Basically I'm just describing what Left 4 Dead did and I think more studios should follow their excellent formula.

                        I think this game has potential to be good. there is a few things that I don’t like but I feel like they are making this game to increase or maintain the popularity of Elden ring and not just be another cash grab. I don’t think that this is going to be a cash grab because they’re making the game at a more reasonable price and they aren’t adding any micro transactions but I won’t know until it releases. it seems like there will be some sort of story and or lore so I’m hoping it will be good

                            Just to clarify: Elden Ring: Nightreign is NOT a battle royale game. It’s a co-op survival game where you team up with others to face the challenges of the night, but you can also play solo if you prefer. It has its own separate story, no PvP, and no microtransactions or battle passes—just pure teamwork and adventure!

                                For anyone worried about micro-transactions or the game being live service (a game with seasons/updates or drip-fed content over time), the main director confirmed in an interview it won’t have any of these things. However I’d still remain cautious with the inclusion of colour-based weapon tiers (blue for common, green for rare, purple for epic gold for legendary etc etc), “Ultimate” abilities a la games like Apex Legends, and also the possibility of skins, however these skins will be unlocked by playing the game, not bought. So at the very least we won’t be seeing “Erd-Coins” anytime soon. And while the game does look…weird, I can appreciate Fromsoft being fully open and honest on exactly what this game will be like, and not trying to hide anything from us.

                                            If done right, the asset reuse could be really cool. But only if done right. Sekiro-parrying Lady Maria, eagle-gliding on top of a flying Kalameet and knocking him out of the air Gough-style, or the Looking Glass Knight doing more online shenanigans and bringing another team of players into your world to fight your own team (I honestly don’t know how they would pull that off, but it’d cool) would be amazing. But an Ornstein reskin called “Wyvern Killer Ornstine” showing up in a random field as a fodder boss, only to show up AGAIN 20 minutes later… not so much.

                                              This is giving me the same feeling as the buildup to a modern Pokémon game, where the hope to see if your favourite pokemon in previous gens gets brought back for the game, outweighs the excitement for the actually new mons. Only this time it’s not pokemon, it’s the past bosses of the Souls Series, and hopefully higher quality than some of Gamefreaks more recent work.

                                                              I think anyone having high expectations of this game is setting themselves up for disappointment, but not because I think it’ll be necessarily bad, it just won’t be what a lot of people are expecting. This is not Elden Ring 2, nor is it even close to the scale of even the Shadow of the Erdtree. It might not even be a proper “Soulsborne” game, but we’ll need to see more to know or not. This is a spinoff, a project made by one of Miyazaki’s other directors. It exists primarily to A: To give other people at Fromsoft other than Miyazaki’s main team a chance to grow, and B: To give us the players something to keep us busy while the main team is currently cooking on the next “real”, bigger Souls game similar to Bloodborne, Sekiro or Elden Ring.

                                                                      So how do these characters work, can they be leveled?
                                                                      Do you pick them for the playthrough or can you change?
                                                                      Can anything from the dlc get brought back into the main game?

                                                                        A lot of people don’t want them to overdo the assets reuse which I can understand, but I’m really hoping for the opposite. I want a game that’s straight up has the entire catalogue of Fromsoft bosses over the years so we can fight all of them without needing to go into NG+ in each game for 1 specific boss. Imagine if they added a boss rush mode? Similar to the pantheons from Hollow Knight, there could be a pantheon for each game’s bosses. Pantheon of the Chosen (DS1), Pantheon of the Bearer (DS2), Pantheon of the Ashen (DS3), Pantheon of the Hunter (BB), Pantheon of the Shinobi (Sekiro) and then pantheon of the Tarnished for ER. Maybe even a Pantheon of the Mentally Unstable where you gotta fight every single boss in the series, in a row.

                                                                          As a concept this is so weird to me. Dark souls characters appearing in the Elden Ring world, a constantly shifting and somewhat broken Land’s Between. Paragliders, wall climbing, expanded multiplayer. We see somewhat straight up use the Sekiro deflect on an Omen in the trailer. Either this could be a lazy cash grab, or this could be every Fromsoft fan’s biggest wet dream. The triple headed dog boss might have me sold on the latter.

                                                                              Although I think it’s good to see Fromsoftware’s willingness to experiment I cannot shake the thought that this is just a testbed for new mechanics that we have to pay for to serve as playtesters.

                                                                              I’m also skeptical about the whole “cooperative class-based gameplay” and the “reshuffling world” aspects, with the former bugging me the most as I found Elden Ring’s buildcrafting (and the freedom this entailed) to be one of the most fun things the game had to offer. Maybe the classes will offer full customization? What if they won’t?

                                                                              Either way I still feel like it’s too early for me to voice any further criticism, guess we’ll have to wait and see where this goes...

                                                                                    "DS3 marked the beginning of Fromsofts descent into normie games with all the fanservice and brain-dead combat. Stagger core 6 and L2den ring with this dlc has pretty much solidified their new status as a normie game publisher. Just look at all the artificial difficulty and the fact that most people used antspur+finger shield for the dlc.

                                                                                    I wrote this 2 months ago one of the dlc pages. Now here we have Elden Ring Nightreign. A co op rogue like with premade hero characters. In the trailer you have bosses from ds1 and ds3 showing up. Even the fire keeper. You bet there will be the blacksmith Andre too. Literally avengers assemble but souls characters. The biggest surprise is that there are people who are actually excited for it. It's complete cash grab slop.

                                                                                        -Birdperson who uses greataxe and greatshield with storm affinities
                                                                                        -Heavy armored guy with colossal weapon?
                                                                                        -A pure archer that doesnt use any other weapon
                                                                                        -Assasin looking girl that uses just dagger
                                                                                        - Paladin/samurai girl? who uses holy katana and can deflect
