among the Crucible Knights.

This sword is imbued with an ancient holy essence.
Its red tint exemplifies the nature of primordial gold, said to be
close in nature to life itself.

Elden Ring Ordovis's Greatsword Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Ordovis's Vortex
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • Can't be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables.
  • Ordovis's Greatsword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
  • Decent on a Strength Builds, as it mainly scales to Strength, Faith and Dex can be req only.
  • The skill also scales to AR, not to Faith. Since both Dex and Faith Scaling on this weapon are terrible, rushing to 80 STR is the best option to maximise damage on both regular attacks and the skill.
  • The Vortex is slow, meaning you'll need either proper timing or high poise to pull off a full charge. It has an AOE so can take out multiple enemies, and when you slam it into the ground it has a ripple effect depending on how much Vortex was charged. These ripples each due rapid damage that quickly stacks up, and they cause enemies to stagger on each one. If you're quick with a heavy follow up, you can cause a stance break.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 1000
  • Vortex deals both Physical and Holy Damage, though much more Physical than Holy (~80%).
  • As a chargeable weapon skill, the Godfrey Icon and Shard of Alexander will both increase the damage of the Vortex.
  • Vortex grants a good amount of Poise, making it hard to interrupt
  • Like most weapons that deal multiple damage types, this weapon has increased AR to compensate for the fact that its damage is calculated against two different enemy resistances (standard or pierce, and holy in this case).
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Greatswords weapons has increased.

I wanted so badly to use the shield effectivley with this, but one handing it with 55 str and 47 fai make me lose over 100 AR.

Oddly, this weapon was correctly spelled as Ordovis' Greatsword before released which is the correct way to spell a pocessive word that ends in S. But then was changed to Ordovis's Greatsword which means Ordovis is Greatsword. I don't know of any other grammatical mistakes besides the intentionally cartoonish medieval dialog.

The charged ash of war eats through enemy poise like anything. The charged ash of war if it fully connects does 66 poise damage on pve enemies, the highest that can be achieved in a single button press without using poise damage boosting cracked tear.

          • Anonymous

As a str/fai build, this guy has been carrying me for the 2nd half of the game after the Golden Halberd carried me the first half. Don't let anyone tell you holy weapons are trash in this game, they have actually made my playing experience relatively easier than it probably should've been lol.

            • Why does with weapon have such a high strengh requirement? Even the Blasphemous Blade only requires 22 strength although it has a higher weight. For balancing reasons? The Blasphemous Blade is still far more viable than this weapon.

              • Anonymous

You don't know true terror until a fully charged "aspect of the crucible: horns" lands on you and you land right at the center of this weapon's already charged ash of war.

                • Anonymous

i wonder why this is pierce? there is no pierce attack in its moveset. all i can think is that maybe the skill is the pierce type.

                  • Anonymous

I'm kinda disappointed that this thing charged heavy isn't that poke that can get you from across the room that the Shield Crucibles can do.

                    • Anonymous

Can't believe no one has mentioned how good this thing is for cheesing Malenia... srsly, hit her with the first charged L2 and you've won the fight! Rinse and repeat til she's dead.

                      • Anonymous

With 60 strength, the physical damage of this weapon still makes it still useful for the final bosses with, but I still find it wanting when it comes to killing Malenia.

Magma Wyrm’s Scalesword is a good weapon to switch to for killing her, but be warned that you will need 15 points into dexterity to use it.

Otherwise both weapons seem to benefit the most from use on a 60 Strength and 40 Faith build.

The Clawmark Seal and Two handed weapon use get a you a tarnished that competes with the power of a pure strength player and the incantation casting of a pure faith player.

Faith can be easily dropped to 25 if you are alright with losing out on getting decent incantation damage.

After the buff, this thing absolutely slaps. The uncharged version is insanely fast now and does good damage with massive hyperarmor and good AOE. The charged version, when combined with Godfrey Icon and Shard of Alexander, can absolutely nuke the health of some bosses. I haven't even gotten to the best part which is that this thing does a ridiculous amount of poise damage. Two fully charged weapon arts will basically stagger any boss. This, combined with the extreme hyperarmor, means that I can see a viable hit-trading build with heavy armor where you just spam the fully charged weapon art to destroy bosses, since only a few big attacks can truly interupt the weapon art..

Recommended to spec mostly into strength rather than faith since the physical is where the majority of the damage comes from, plus it has much better scaling with strength.

The only problem I have with this thing is that the range of the actual weapon seems shorter than average for a greatsword. Other than that, it is worth it to go through the horrendous double crucible knight boss fight for. Cheese them with Blasphemous blade and get this baby.

                          • Anonymous

I used it before the buff and it was definitely the best great sword. But now it’s just over the top. L2 speed boost was welcome but unnecessary. The hyper armor on uncharged is absolutely ridiculous though, no reason I should be able to face tank a great hammer on reaction L2. Fortunately most peeps spamming it don’t level faith past the minimum, so I steam roll meta chasers spamming it with my own L2. I hope they revert the hyperarmor on uncharged L2

Update the sword, its now pretty good. No ROB before 1 06 but after 1.07 its a plain Jane game. Nothing stands out, nothing exciting. Just pick whatever and your good. Glad I played before the game was butchered

Damn this thing is good now. Maybe then even overbuffed it? The increased speed is nice but its also have a massive hyperarmor which might be a little too bit too much

God damn did the update make the uncharged ash quick, bless From for actually nerfing crouch poke crutches and buffing this beauty. 10/10

If you’re going for a Crucible Knight playthrough, consider the Regalia of Eochaid instead. Much better AoW and isn’t as sluggishly bulky.

                                    • such a cool weapon which makes it a total shame that it’s almost not worth it to have the fight the boss and go through the god awful dungeon

                                      • Anonymous

If only this thing had the disgustingly long range thrust that the Crucible Knights themselves love to use whenever you so much as think about sipping your flask, it would've been perfect for a cosplay build, but of course it just gets the standard greatsword moveset, they could've atleast have given it the same r2s as the Claymore, big sadge.

                                        • Anonymous

Was so hyped when I first got it, the CKs have such a nice moveset with it and.... then it's the same bs moveset that almost every single other greatsword has. Very, very disappointing. At least the aow is unique and fun to use, so there's that at least.

                                          • Anonymous

The weapon art is cool but considering how the knights who wield this love to jab it into your face every time you try to heal, i think it should've gotten some poke moves

                                            • Anonymous

A pretty good weapon with decent scaling and a weapon art that's a little tricky to use without a good amount of poise. Great for people dressing as crucible knights. I don't pvp at all but even I can see it would be suicide to try and use that AoW

                                              • Anonymous

The damage is pretty good but the weapon art is trash, even uncharged it takes a long time to activate so probably be knocked out of it and the range is bad so you need to be right up to them.

                                                • Anonymous

for everyone who says the weapon art need hyper armor, it does get extra poise when you let go of the charge. just dont be stupid, if you see something charging you, let go and most of the time youll eat the hit and get some damage off. yall are blinded by the need to fully charge everything

                                                  • Anonymous

Maybe it's a stretch, but, could the name of the knight wielding it (Ordovis) be a reference to the Ordovician, a geologocal period of time which came before the Silurian (The other knight's name being Siluria). Both these periods were part of the paleozoic, during which life, as we know it, saw some dramatic changes from an evolutionary point of view.

We know the Crucible is more or less the evolution of life in Elden ring, so it could make some sense that the knights that worship it are a reference to these geological periods.

Another period of time that followed this one is the Devonian, so it could be possible that a future Crucible knight's name will pe Devon or something along those lines.

                                                    • No unique moveset like most unique weapons. just a reskin of lordworn greatsword with a very slow and weak ash of war that doesn't even have hyperarmor. like at least give it one of the crucible run attacks that catch rolling or chugging

                                                      • Anonymous

Why does this not have hyper armor? There are skills out there that have longer reach but have unnecessary (but welcomed) hyper armor but on a skill that has like 1 foot reach you don't get hyper armor. This weapon is just sad.

                                                        • Anonymous

As well as all crucible spells and erdtree heal. By running through the full game, and beating every boss you come by, whith the gold scarab talisman and a little bird farming it's a pretty powerful build

Optimal in combo with Blasphemous or Gargoyle's Blackblade (above all Blackblade because Blasphemous scale little better with DEX)
65 STR 45 FAI with Radagon Soreseal 880 AR double handed, 826 single hand.

I know scaling wise there would be better combinations but i'd like two the most (looks and all...)

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

I mean, it seems alot of enemies have a good resistance to Holy Damage (i said that, because I use it in my str / faith build, and hesitate to upgrade this to +10).

                                                                      • Anonymous

This is my main weapon on my str/fath build, and I think its a fantastic sword. It hits hard, and the weapon art is really fun to use.

The moves are like any greatsword so nothing special there. The Vortex is powerful, but youll need either proper timing or high poise to pull off a full charge. (which you dont always need) It has an AOE so can take out multiple enemies, and when you slam it into the ground it has a ripple effect depending on how much Vortex was charged. These ripples each due rapid damage that quickly stacks up, and they cause enemies to stagger on each one. If youre quick with a heavy follow up, you can cause a stance break.

For a Paladin like build, its powerful and a lot of fun. Plus it feels like a badass smite when you bring it down! Probably not the most "optimized" choice, but top tier still.

                                                                        • Anonymous

When should I use this over gargoyle blackblade? I love the weapon art but I can't see a reason to use this instead.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I cannot overstate how much I like this in the left hand with Blasphemous in the right. I’ve got a 55 Fth/45 Str split, and while the Blasphemous has the better weapon art and damage, the Ordovis’ still has a very high AR… but also seems to be a bit longer than the Blasphemous, giving you just a bit of extra reach when dual wielding.

                                                                            • Anonymous

If you're having trouble with the boss fight, the spear crucible knight will often resort to a ranged spear throw while Ordovis himself will usually try to stay in melee range. You can use the spear throw to create spacing between the two and get some hits on Ordovis, and once he is down the spear knight is pretty simple. Just watch out for his fist impale grab attack and you should be fine. Also, if you are running a strength build, the Staff of the Avatar's Ash of War has really good hyper armor if you feel comfortable taking some damage and getting out.

                                                                              • Anonymous

it's base damage is way lower than other faith/str weapons like Golden halberd and Blasphemous blade. Golden halberd has worse faith scaling and blasphemous has worse strength scaling, but they still out do this one. Ordivis GS is a good powerstance option to left hand with blasphemous though.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Scales really well with both STR and FAI, managed to get into 800+ attack rating reasonably fast.
May be the best weapon for STR+FAI builds.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Got this today after so many tries. For a greatsword user, the hardest part is the first phase cause both of them move at the same speed. So its hard to separate them and find an opening. Just keep running around and hitting 1 time when they have abit of distance between them
Try to focus the spear knight first, after u get him to like half HP he gets 2 lunge attack which makes it faster. Kite his lunge/claw thingy then hit him.
Have to be patient. My fight was like 30 mins. Get the blessed dew talisman (heals hp over time), worth it for long fights

                                                                                    • Anonymous

The sword is a definition of Sounds good, looks cool but does not work. Frist of all it's holy dmg does not prevent skeletons from coming back. It's weapon art is total letdown. Initial wind up can be interrupted even with dagger or rat bite (even while equipped in heavy set - tested in crucible set). The dmg is mediocre as well as range. Only redemption is that, before actual dmg of weapon art the animation of weapon slam does also dmg, however it is light dmg with AR of 1 handed - even if you two hand it prior to weapon art. Gargoyle Black blade is much better for STR/Faith and has far superiror wapon art.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

very easy way to beat the 2v1 without summons for me is use a shield with barricade shield and just do guard counter on the spear guy after he dies the 1v1 shouldn't be a problem

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Got scared the first day I tried beating them, but after getting and upgrading the Greatshield Soldiers Ashes, it became a lot easier. What you wanna do is run to your right as soon as you enter the arena and summon the Greatshield gang, then lure Ordovis out of the mess and leave the spear dude there. They'll tank the spear guy for most of the fight and you can take down Ordovis 1x1.

If you prefer to fight Ordovis last, just run to the right instead and lure out the spear dude first.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            This weapon? Amazing.

The boss you get it from? Absolute ****ing bullshit that will make you tear your hair out one by one.

Listen to the advice of a poor man who suffered an hour against that boss: Summon Help. Please and thank you.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

You can solo this melee if you're stubborn like me and don't wanna summon; someone in the comments said to kite ordovis and focus on the spear knight first, and that was the trick. just keep kiting and hit-and-running kinda like how you'd deal with ornstein and smough

                                                                                              • Anonymous

If you’re having trouble with this fight use the Mimic Tear spirit ash. Summons a clone of yourself so you can at least fight the knights 1v1.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I recommend summoning help, this fight is really hard and is not worth the head ache. At least it is behind the least annoying Hero grave, still a pain though. Weapon is amazing for a strength faith build

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Viewer beware : the boss fight you get this from is by far the most ludicrous thing i've encountered in this game. Two crucible knights, and with different movesets to boot.
First time i'd actually not recommend a weapon due to the sheer difficulty of aquisition.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous
