Ornamental Straight Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. The Ornamental Straight Sword scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for melee combat, especially when accompanied with the skill, Golden Tempering, which allows users to deal dual-wielding combo with a strong attack while in effect. The Ornamental Straight Sword is one of a few non-Claw/Fist Paired Weapons.
Slender straight sword patterned after an antique ornament.
Superior swordsmen prefer to wield one in each hand.
After falling from grace, the dregs of the golden lineage sought power and purpose in the past.
Where to Find Ornamental Straight Sword in Elden Ring
The Ornamental Straight Sword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Dropped by the Grafted Scion at the Chapel of Anticipation. Players can return to this area after tutorial by using the waygate at The Four Belfries. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Ornamental Straight Sword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Golden Tempering
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War.
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted with Consumables.
- Ornamental Straight Sword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- This is a paired weapon, and two-handing it allows you to dual wield two of the swords at once. Two handing the weapon does NOT confer the typical 1.5x STR multiplier that would be typical of two handing weapons.
- At +10 upgrade level, 80 Dex, 10 Str, this weapon has an AR of 482 (247+237)
- The dual-wield of this weapon functions somewhat differently to most powerstanced weapons, and as a result, you have access to a complete set of dual weapon attacks, since most weapons only double attack with the L1 button.
- For Example: The jumping R1 attack is the thrusting sword powerstance jumping attack, comprised of a series of fast thrusts and slashes in an area directly in front of the user. Useful for triggering multi-hitting talisman
- One of the lightest physical weapons that equips a weapon in each hand, which is excellent when paired with the Blue Dancer Charm. Only fist/claw weapons can compare for weight, but they lack the range that the OSS provides. That being said, the Blue Dancer Charm only buffs physical damage, so it has no effect on the 100 conferred Holy Damage from Golden tempering.
- The minimum weapon weight would be 1.5, on the Caestus, so you only give up 1.5 weight for a massive range buff
- Sell Value:
200
- With consecutive attack buffs such as the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia/Millicent's Prosthesis combo and Thorny Cracked Tear, as well as charged R2 attack buffs like the Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear, you can get some insane numbers.
- It is possible to perform the paired weapon charged R2 even when one-handing this weapn while Golden Tempering is active. Because of this, you can two-hand this weapon, apply Golden Tempering, then one-hand it and buff yourself with the Jellyfish Shield skill Contagious Fury. Performing the charged heavy attack will not cancel Contaigous Fury, which is normally cancelled as soon as the Jellyfish Shield is stowed away for two-handing another weapon.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.08, Straight Swords poise damage has been reduced only on PVP.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the running attack speed, first attack speed and speed of guard counter of straight sword has increased. The attack recovery time has also decreased.
- When performing the Golden Tempering skill, the "Erdtree & Crucible" symbol will flash shortly. This symbol is otherwise only found in three places in the lands between (two, technically): On the ground in the Chapel of Anticipation, directly beneath where the Grafted Scion who drops this weapon lands to fight the player at the beginning of the game, and in the middle of the Roundtable in the Fortified Manor [Map Link] (and thus by extension the Roundtable Hold), mostly obscured by the gigantic axe and the numerous swords plunged into the symbol.
- The description of this weapon reads: "After falling from grace, the dregs of the golden lineage sought power and purpose in the past." So the implication here is that 1: The Golden Lineage is connected to the Primordial Crucible very directly (further supported by the Crucible Knights who fought for Godfrey). And 2: the Primordial Crucible of the Erdtree was one of, if not the inspiration for Godrick's practice of grafting, as it too melds all forms of life together, and thus the Crucible represents the "past" in this weapons description. And 3: The Roundtable and Fortified Manor are connected to the Crucible and the Golden Lineage as they only other places with this symbol in the game.

Anyone know why the Golden Tempering charged heavy doesn't benefit from the Axe Talisman or the Spiked Tear?
- Anonymous
If the special non charged Heavy Atk of this weapon had better tracking and a little bit of hyperarmor, I think it would be viable in PVP
- Anonymous
Saw a few people asking this, so I tested it, the axe talisman does NOT work on golden tempering. A full golden tempering combo without the axe talisman did 754 damage, with the axe talisman equipped still 754 damage. Tested 10 times, 5 with talisman 5 without, the Elleh Godrick soldier, NG+3, non-upgraded ornamental straight sword. The axe talisman works normally non-tempered OSS heavy attacks but at that point why are you using the OSS?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Actually makes good use of the blue dancer charm since it only weighs 3 pounds despite being 2 swords.
- Anonymous
Did they ever patch the axe talisman for this weapon? Does it get the added damage from the talisman now?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
It's like a mix of straight swords and rapiers. It may not has much damage and long reach, but the moveset is very good for PVP. For PVE, I suggest to use other powerstancing straight swords as they are definitely better in all terms.
- Anonymous
Much better as a secondary weapon if you are on first playthrough lol. Use it with a stronger straight sword as see it mash bosses with l1 spams
- Anonymous
Sometimes I think it might not be doing holy damage just increasing base dmg. Every other holy buff will kill skeletons this needs the extra ground hit. Would not be first time something was appling diff dmg type to what is listed in fromsoft game.
- Anonymous
In NG+ is it possible when you get a second one of these to dual wield both of these swords together? As in have 4 of them at the same time?
- Anonymous
"Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted with Consumables."
"This upgrade can be enchanted with Magic or boosted with Consumables."
I'm getting mixed messages here. Is this weapon like the Bloodhound's Fang, where you can buff it?
- Anonymous
excellent pve weapon, but for pvp dont even bother with the full combo unless the person your fighting has goldfish brain syndrome
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
At 80 dex, its more worth it to level up strength for physical damage.
- Anonymous
If only other weapons had R2s that covered so much ground. some weapons could really need it.
- Anonymous
Can confirm, axe talisman and spiked cracked tear have no effect on golden tempering's unique heavy attack.
- Anonymous
Please correct this article. The axe talisman has been verified to have NO effect on damage output of this weapon, irrespective of what you might think.

Okay, the below comment was mine. It turns out scaling on the OSS is very poor so at max level it drastically underperforms a regular sword. Okay sword early, but garbage late.
- Anonymous
Landing the full r2 combo is kind of living the dream so I wouldn't hang my hat on that. The straight r2 is okay but the buff from the l2 isn't much to write home about.
But it is the strongest dex sword and it's working exceptionally well off hand in a dual wield straight sword dex build.
I'm using a nobles slender sword With bloodhound step as the primary but it would be objectively better with Thunderbolt. I'm just doing a pure melee run.

Referring to AR.
Tested on giants by war masters shack and full combo, once sequential attack buffs were activated was doing close to 5k damage. Granted most bosses won’t give you time to execute the combo. I’d be interested to see if you can catch malenia with it since she has such little poise.
- Anonymous
Messing around with buffs with this, jellyfish great shield, fgms, golden vow, rotten winged sword insignia (talisman), got at from 386 (at +9) to 880, with holy scorpion charm, Millicents prosthesis got it to 1023… granted fgms/jellyfish buff wears off in 30 seconds - and it’s probably be worth having some defensive talismans like godskin swaddling. I swear with thorny cracked tear I saw at hit 1500 something for a split sec due to all the consecutive hit buffs, pretty nuts
- Anonymous
if you can get your hands on it early it it makes for a very comfy run through stormveil
- Anonymous
Just found a bug that if you do an uncharged heavy after buffing and throw a throwing knife right after then immediately follow with another uncharged heavy it does a barbaric roar like final swing holding both blades together
- Anonymous
To the comment after the one below me, it literally adds holy damage dude. Holy damage generally doesn’t insta kill undead enemies it just does more damage against them. Few things in this game can insta kill skeletons, sacred blade or holy pots are one of them.
- Anonymous
Very, very good weapon, but it has a few quirks to keep in mind. AoW gives it flat 100 holy damage which is not affected by the weapon level, so its more noticeable in early game, but still nice late game. Not sure if scorpion charm buffs it, it should, but 12 holy damage is nothing. Changed heavy attack has pretty good tracking, so dont worry about your opponent just stepping aside, unless they roll behind you it will hit. But charged changed heavy attack (damn thats a mouthful) kinda plays out in three parts - bunch of stabs - more stabs - crest slash and keep in mind - time between more stabs and crest slash is enormous, most if not all weapons can hit you in that time so be mindful about trading with it. It also deals pathetic damage to poise in pve, so dont even try to use it on sturdier enemies unless they are staggered. Alternatevly - give a chanse to uncharged changed heavy attack - it just crest slash, but it has nice damage, pretty fast and staggers enemies good. It stunlocks omens and onyx lords, but isnt that good at breaking their stance
- Anonymous
The description of golden tempering implies the damage it does is holy. it is not as it doesnt insta kill skeletons.
- Anonymous
Axe Talisman + Spear talisman + Winged/Millicent Talisman + Spiked Tear + Thorny Tear
Hold down R2 and enjoy killing everything that doesnt wear 3 layers of armour and block. Alternatiely, use the stonebreaker tear and demolish even the toughest enemies with crits.
If you're already going for DEX with a side of FAI, consider taking golden vow and rejection into your repertoire. Become the true scion of the golden lineage!

Just soloed Crucible Knight Duo with this beast. Granted, I'm on NG+, but for someone who completed the entirety of endgame on NG relying on Blasphemous Blade as a crutch it's something of an accomplishment. Uncharged buffed heavies use two swords without you having to switch from 1H to 2H, which pairs amazingly with guard couter-centric strategy I utilized. They come out very quickly, just to fill in the tight window knights leave to you. Probably would've been easier with Golden Parry but newly buffed Barricade Shield worked well for me.

I wish the block animation would make the character cross the swords
Not that blocking with it would be of any use but the style points! Damn id love it

Could be a result of a buff in 1.07. Fresh character - just put a couple points into dex to equip, no upgrades/talismans/etc. Just the AoW buff. A fully charged R2 nearly 1 combo'd Patches during the first encounter. Over 500 damage. Needs further testing but easily an early game monster now.
- Anonymous
Can we put other buffs like Bloodflame blade or one of the greases on it? I don’t think it’d be particularly useful, but it’d be cool as like a theme build.

I have to say this has to be one of the most underrated pure Dex weapons.
I played with this weapon for quite a while, and I feel like out of all the straight swords it has by far the most interesting/ varied moveset.
Not only does Ornamental straight sword, inherit basically all the same moves that every other straight sword has when power stanced (Aside from ashes of war), but it also has:
Unique power stanced Jumping Light attack that hits 3 times.
Unique power stanced Heavy attack (Two versions of it, since it changes while Golden Tampering is active)
Unique power stanced charged Heavy attack (Two versions of it, since it changes while Golden Tampering is active)
Unique power stanced running heavy attack.
All the other straight swords are honestly boring as hell to me, compared to this weapon. It's varied moveset makes this weapon especially good and underrated in pvp, since you have so many additional different attack patterns that other straight swords do not.
One thing I would recommend if building around this weapon is using both Miliscents Prosthesis, and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia talismans. This weapon stacks the buff really quickly, since jumping R1 is 3 attacks, and R2 during Golden Tampering is like 10 attacks. I feel like non bleed swords can really use that extra damage oomph that you get from those talismans.
You could also add Thorny Cracked Tear for even more damage, since all 3 consecutive attack buffs stack, but I personally prefer 2 defensive physick buffs, especially for pvp, where you won't always be able to trigger the buff reliably. Basically a good mix of offense and defense is the way to go when building around this weapon.

skill is unaffected by godfrey icon, axe talisman, and shard of alexander

One of the best things about this weapon, once buffed, is that you can hold a shield in your offhand and using the heavy attack will bring out the other sword. It’s good for mix ups, and also if you prefer to normally use just one of the swords.
Really cool and underrated thing about this weapon is that it's AOW is basically carried over to it's charged R2, and you can still use the dual wielding combo attack, while single handling the weapon.
This means that it pairs nicely with shields. If you put Skill on your Shield, like let's say a parry it overwrites the skill of your weapon. But since this weapon's AOW is in it's R2, you can have Shield AOW, and still have access to your weapons AOW.
is it just me or do these massively increase discovery? almost everything I killed dropped!!

Great weapon. Really wish they would give it’s AoW hyper armor. Or make it like the Regalia of Eochiad AoW where you can opt out the last hit by rolling. It’ll make it more versatile and give you more opportunities to use the AoW since you won’t be completely at the mercy of it’s telegraph.
- Anonymous
I Made a whole build for this weapon and it IS actually pretty strong. With the special charged R2 and buffs i die about 3K damage on a boss. The only downside is on the weapon is the missing hyper armor on the charged R2s. All in all i think its an underestimated weapon.
- Anonymous
Special charged r2 needs actual hyperarmor and it would be chef's kiss.
- Anonymous
The unique charged heavy attack combo that you get with Golden Tempering active does not seem to be affected by the Axe Talisman. Tested against an NG+2 Godrick Soldier with unupgraded Ornamental Straight Swords, the full combo did 448 damage both with and without Axe Talisman
- Anonymous
Uncharged strong attack with the AoW active is just the final attack of the combo
- Anonymous
Probably the most underrated weapon in the game. First weapon you can get is also the best. With Blue Dancer, 2x Millicent talismans and Claw Talisman you melt all. No need for AoW either, plain blades are fire. AoW is just gravy. Charged heavy is like another AoW. Ludicrous weapon.
- Anonymous
For the first time after months of playing this game, i managed to beat the scion on a new char (Vagabond). Turns out the sword was his greatest weapon after all! I'm so proud of myself! This will definetly come in handy on my dex char.
- Anonymous
Bad for PVE, but good for PVP. It has a nice moveset and decent damage. Overall it's a good weapon for me.
- Anonymous
The only thing keeping this thing balanced is the low stagger. For talismans like the winged insignia, each blade hit counts as an individual hit, so 2-handing it makes you ramp up the buff crazy fast. Each hit is also its own damage instance, which means that 2-handing it effectively doubles its AR. Even doing ordinary R1 attacks still racks up insane numbers on a garden-variety dex build
- Anonymous
The 8 hit combo is nice... if you are fighting something AFK
- Anonymous
"The sword's shape, as well as part of its description, may be a reference to the Runescape RPG."
Perfect example of fextralife fake lore. Nothing about these swords show a reference to Runescape.
- Anonymous
Wow. I didn't know it was THIS good. I'm using it with successive attacks talismans and it activates it in 2 light hits. This weapon got unique moveset.
- Anonymous
This weapon will out damage most things in the later stages of the game with the right setup. Although, the full animation is rather lengthy and hard to pull off against most aggressive enemies.
With consecutive attack buffs such as the Rotten Wing Sword Insignia/Millicent Prosthesis combo and Thorny Cracked Tear, as well as charged R2 attack buffs like the Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear, you can get some insane numbers. And lesser known to most people is that you can 1hand this weapon and still do the powerstanced paired weapon charged R2. Because of this, you can do something rather cheeky: 2hand this, apply the weapon buff, then 1hand it and use the Jellyfish Shield buff. When you use the R2 while 1handing, you'll pull out the second sword and do the flurry attack, and the jellyshield will still glow red on your back giving you the 20% damage buff. No other weapon can do this, as the jellyshield will take the slot of your offhand weapon as well as your ash of war weapon art. Nor can you buff with the shield then 2hand something, because it'll lose the buff if its on your back.
A unique R2 that acts like a charged attack, hits extremely fast multiple times for consecutive buffs, and can be 1handed with the jellyshield without it preventing you from using the ash of war? Now that's a lotta damage.
- Anonymous
Something extremely cool about this weapon I haven't ever seen mentioned - you can apply the ash while one-handing it, and if you press R2 while one-handing it, you bust out the second sword with no delay at all and immediately launch into the same animation.
This is actually... REALLY good. Swapping between a shield and a second weapon while powerstancing can be clumsy - this lets you immediately bust out a big heavy r2 or launch into your crazy combo while still being able to parry or cast spells.

There are two things that would greatly benefit the buffed charged strong attack: hyper-armour and the ability to cancel it via a roll.

This sword and the matching shield give a great Germanic barbarian vibe.
- Anonymous
wish there was a pair of swords that didn't look like a weenie roast. only other ones are a colossal which is too slow or fist weapons with no range. it's the only medium-size paired weapon in the game and that crossguard hurts my soul it would send a blade right into your wrist, ouch
- Anonymous
Paired weapons count as 2 1Handed weapons and not 1 2Handed weapon when "2 Handed" right? (I hope that question made sense)
- Anonymous
This weapon is actually pretty good, the art of war is fine for some extra damage (but the special R2 attacks take too long to execute).
The power stance sword moveset is pretty good, I never have issues with birds or anything like that since the hitbox is pretty generous.
Definitely my go-to for a Dex build, at least early game, it's fine against the final bosses, Malenia, etc.
- Anonymous
I don't know why people say this weapon is weak. It's REALLY good. I have one at +10 and with the Sword's one minute weapon buff on plus Contagious Fury from Jellyfish Shield paired with successive attack Talismans this thing wrecks with it's R1 and R2 attack when in the dual sword mode.
Similar to fists/claws yhe advantage of this sword is you can get all the advantages of powerstancing two straight swords while only equipping one weapon. You just tap R1 to rapid chain attack instead of L1. Also the R2 attack is very unique and makes you grapple and machine gun rapidly stab things to death for amazing damage and poise break. Add in the holy damage and this sword is monstrous in a lot of situations. I kill people with it frequently in PvP. Love it.
- Anonymous
Yea the weapon isn't great. But it's cool and good players can easily make it work
- Anonymous
What a weak weapon. Hope the DLC provides some real weapons. All the stuff that's in ER now is just incredible weak and underpowered.
- Anonymous
Wait a second... ¿Don't you think that this sword looks awfully similar to the sword of Runescape's logo?
- Anonymous
This with Godskin swaddling cloth and Rotten sword insignia is pretty fun and good
- Anonymous
I feel like this weapon would pair really well with the successive hits talismans, like rotten sword Insignia, godskin swaddle cloth, millicents Prosthesis etc. I know this swords combo is really fast, so it probably pair's well, but I need to give it a try
- Anonymous
Entirely too short to be effective beyond early game. The paired moveset is nice, but the inability to give it an Ash of War and it's only buff being its current Ash really sucks, even more so because so many things resist Holy damage.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Honestly this weapon needs a buff, for being a challenge at the start the fact that is paired is huge, but it just falls flat far too quickly.
- Anonymous
Confirmed I can equip Serpent-God's Curved Sword in my left hand, then when I two-hand this to go into it's dual wield mode, I get the heal on kill from Serpent.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Not that impressed really. Even though it can do a lot of damage with the skill active, the cost of the skill is quite high and the duration is quite short, so it really doesn't seem that worth it mostly.
- Anonymous
tested with Two Fingers Heirloom; can confirm that Faith will not make the weapon art's damage buff scale.
- Anonymous
Finally, a weapon with a unique movest!! Not the same slash, trust moves...
- Anonymous
Worth noting that a full unique charged combo attack triggers 2 instances of godskin swaddling cloth heals (2nd is delayed due to internal cooldown).
- Anonymous
I could be completely wrong here, but I genuinely think this is one of the better hidden faith weapons. It DOESN’T scale with faith, however if I’m not mistaken I believe the golden tempering causes holy damage..? Perhaps..? All I know is I maxed it out for fun, 2 handed it, and then dealt 1300 damage in one hit. I am spec’d heavily into faith, very low into dex, and heavily into strength. It does not do a whole lot of damage without the buff, it’s quite awful in fact. So my only explanation is that buff must be doing holy damage. I was able to deal almost 8k damage with it in a matter of 3-5 seconds because of its attack speed. Because of this I’m probably going to use it as my main weapon. It’s very very good.
- Anonymous
The strength of this weapon is u can put turtle shield in the back get the buff and best of all be Leonardo go ninja go ninja go go go
- Anonymous
One of the few redeeming characteristics for this sword is that it comes as a pair, which means you can have something else as an offhand that gives passive buffs, like one of the swords that restores health per hit. You get their benefit, while being able to dual wield straight swords.
Haven't figured out much more uses for this. The heavy attack with weapon art active has to be useful with some kind of trinket pair.
- Anonymous
Unimpressive stats, but looks nice, can guard while dual-wielding, and has a pretty fast moveset. Good for early-mid game due to the ease of getting somber smithing stones. Great for stunlocking vulgar militia.
- Anonymous
My recommendation for those that want this at the start of the game:
1) Start with the Samurai class
2) Stay at range & use the longbow
Attack when it's safe.
Run, dodge, roll, when you have to.
Utilize Mighty Shot (when you have time to charge it up) until out of mana.
Use Fire Arrows until they are depleted, then use regular arrows.
Easy Peasy Japanesey. I did this in 1 try and I've never played any "Souls-like" game before.
- Anonymous
Paired weapons are so weird in this game. No indication in the icon that it's a dual wielded weapon like it was in DS3. I only found out that Radahn's remembrance weapon is a paired weapon accidentally in the description, but with this one I completely missed the part where it suggests it's dual wielded.
Are there any other paired weapons in this game?
- Anonymous
If you want to start the game with this and don't want to beat your head against the wall making and remaking characters, here's my guide. You can, of course, pick a class with a ranged attack and cheese the grafted scion from the tree, but honestly, anyone is so liable to mess up the jump that you may as well fight him fair and square. Samurai is tempting because it has the starting stats to wield it, and bleed, but I'm telling you that it's far far easier to start Vagabond. Remember to unequip your halberd, and two hand your longsword. The only attacks you should/need to do are Square Off strong attack (L2+R2) and critical hits. Stay a very safe distance and punish only when you are certain you can. Good moves to punish are the four swipes (the fourth is delayed, roll through it and punish) and the alternating downward stabs/shield slams, he leaves himself wide open at the end. If you can get two hits in close enough succession, he'll posture break and you can crit, and then you can square off again as a wake-up. Get one more hit in soon enough and you get another crit, lather rinse repeat.
Now all that said, even starting the game with this thing, it's not that impressive. The weapon art takes a very long time to activate, and doesn't last terribly long. Damage output without it is not great, especially compared to just power stancing regular straight swords. Two keen advantages to starting with this, however, are access to holy damage without faith, a mere 3 weight for 2 swords means it pairs well with the Blue Dancer Charm you can get right in Limgrave, and that it uses Somber stones, which means you can conserve your ironically more precious regular smithing stones for whatever AoW-infusable weapon you want to commit to later.

Has an interesting interaction with shields. When the buff is up, strong attacks and charged attacks use the unique two-handed move-set

Testing showed the unique charge attack is not affected by axe talisman or twinblade talisman

Fast attack and able to dual wield when duplicate. Fun DEX weapon.

The art buffs the weapon for 85 holy damage which is useful at low levels but unfortunately doesn't improve with smithing. As you might imagine it's usefulness tapers off steeply mid to late game. Honestly, unless equipment load is a concern you're better off powerstancing keen longswords. You'll have the same damage output (and moveset beyond the buffed R2), your choice of ashes, and the ability to enchant with spells and consumables.

These swords are really good for a dex build that doesn't want to put points into Faith, Intelligence, or Arcane. The scaling and damage is deceptively low, because that attack rating is for each of the two swords: if you're powerstancing, almost every attack will hit twice. The weapon art gives you 85 extra Holy damage at +9.
I don't know that I'd recommend upgrading it to +10 over something like Bolt of Gransax, though.

How do I see if weapons have the ability to dual wield on their own like this weapon can ? or do I have to manually tjek every weapon ? :O
