Ornamental Straight Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. The Ornamental Straight Sword scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for melee combat, especially when accompanied with the skill, Golden Tempering, which allows users to deal dual-wielding combo with a strong attack while in effect. The Ornamental Straight Sword is one of a few non-Claw/Fist Paired Weapons.
Slender straight sword patterned after an antique ornament.
Superior swordsmen prefer to wield one in each hand.
After falling from grace, the dregs of the golden lineage sought power and purpose in the past.
Where to Find Ornamental Straight Sword in Elden Ring
The Ornamental Straight Sword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Dropped by the Grafted Scion at the Chapel of Anticipation. Players can return to this area after tutorial by using the waygate at The Four Belfries. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Ornamental Straight Sword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Golden Tempering
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War.
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted with Consumables.
- Ornamental Straight Sword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- This is a paired weapon, and two-handing it allows you to dual wield two of the swords at once. Two handing the weapon does NOT confer the typical 1.5x STR multiplier that would be typical of two handing weapons.
- At +10 upgrade level, 80 Dex, 10 Str, this weapon has an AR of 482 (247+237)
- The dual-wield of this weapon functions somewhat differently to most powerstanced weapons, and as a result, you have access to a complete set of dual weapon attacks, since most weapons only double attack with the L1 button.
- For Example: The jumping R1 attack is the thrusting sword powerstance jumping attack, comprised of a series of fast thrusts and slashes in an area directly in front of the user.
- With consecutive attack buffs such as the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia/Millicent's Prosthesis combo and Thorny Cracked Tear you can get some high damage.
- It is possible to perform the paired weapon charged R2 even when one-handing this weapon while Golden Tempering is active. Because of this, you can two-hand this weapon, apply Golden Tempering, then one-hand it and buff yourself with the Jellyfish Shield skill Contagious Fury. Performing the charged heavy attack will not cancel Contagious Fury, which is normally cancelled as soon as the Jellyfish Shield is stowed away for two-handing another weapon.
- Sell Value: 200
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.08, Straight Swords poise damage has been reduced only on PVP.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the running attack speed, first attack speed and speed of guard counter of straight sword has increased. The attack recovery time has also decreased.
- NOTE: Patch 1.13 Increased poise damage of dual wield attacks of all Straight Swords (in PVP)

Trivia
- When performing the Golden Tempering skill, the "Erdtree & Crucible" symbol will flash shortly. This symbol is otherwise only found in three places in the lands between (two, technically): On the ground in the Chapel of Anticipation, directly beneath where the Grafted Scion who drops this weapon lands to fight the player at the beginning of the game, and in the middle of the Roundtable in the Fortified Manor [Map Link] (and thus by extension the Roundtable Hold), mostly obscured by the gigantic axe and the numerous swords plunged into the symbol. The description of this weapon reads: "After falling from grace, the dregs of the golden lineage sought power and purpose in the past." So the implication here is that 1: The Golden Lineage is connected to the Primordial Crucible very directly (further supported by the Crucible Knights who fought for Godfrey). And 2: the Primordial Crucible of the Erdtree was one of, if not the inspiration for Godrick's practice of grafting, as it too melds all forms of life together, and thus the Crucible represents the "past" in this weapons description. And 3: The Roundtable and Fortified Manor are connected to the Crucible and the Golden Lineage as they only other places with this symbol in the game.

So for a Dex build:
- Worse damage than a Weathered SS
- Less range than a Broadsword
- Cannot change the ash of war
- The buff is only 100 holy damage (3 out of 4 grease in this game gives more and two of them are quicker to apply)
- 2 Handed loses the crouch poke
- Buffed loses the R2 poke
- HTS running L1 without the damage or range of HTS
- TS jumping L1 is good but arguably not better than the SS jumping L1
All of that for a drop of guard canceling, you people are crazy. You don't even use guard canceling, you just spam R1.
- Anonymous
These can actually be devastating on a sword & board build, not gonna lie...
- Anonymous
Almost a Perfect weapon with a great Moveset. The ability to guard cancel for chain jumps is amazing. Would go even harder with better scaling at all + quality rather than dex... And during the buff L2 should trigger a different attack similar to Moon GS

I love straight sword but what the hell is this FromSoft. It really feels like they take into account things like availability and weapon requirements when balancing a weapon, because these swords are easily underpowered.
They literally have worse damage than a STANDARD AFFINITY Noble Slender Sword, while being shorter and not buffable. And 100 holy from the weapon art is nothing.
I like the idea with the unique moveset, but it's another missed opportunity. Why give this sword the running attack of powerstanced heavy thrusting sword, when they have neither the range or the damage of heavy thrusting sword?
It's like they made these swords before adding powerstancing into the game, and once they added powerstancing they forgot to buff this weapon accordingly.
I'm not trying to be a hater, we deserve to have good weapons and this is not one of them.

the only paired weapon in the game that got a unique moveset, would be cool if there were more weapons like this

dude they need to fix the tracking of this weapon, it sucks so bad

In my opinion Fromsoft needs to make the Buffed Charged R2 work with the axe Talisman and the Charged attack tear.

Perfect for a holy crusader build on 80 dex with 25 faith for golden vow and blessing's boon

does anyone know what the stance damage values are for the buffed heavy chain? the stance section here only covers the unbuffed attacks.
It would be nice if this had some (even minor) Faith scaling so that the buff could scale with something, because a flat +100 Holy damage will do barely anything for you once you get into the latter half of the game as well as higher level online play. Considering the skill is called "Golden Tempering" and the symbol that gets shown when using it is an ancient symbol of the Erdtree, you'd think this would have any amount of Faith scaling, even if it was something like a C or D because it's a faded antique.

Ok hear me out, put the PSTS crouch/roll attack on this thing and increase the buff duration and this becomes competitive

Don't sweat the charged R2, just put the winged talisman(s) and claw talisman on with a dex build and you'll hit insane damage. The charged buffed R2 will absolutely obliterate whatever stands there and takes it, but the paired straight sword attacks themselves are absurdly strong and will shred everything anyways, and with the talisman buffs the holy damage becomes decent rather than trivial.
- Anonymous
Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear do not work with the charge R2 combo.
- Anonymous
To expand; after trying this with no-talisman buffed R2s and making sure only the last hit actually hits an albinauric, then trying the same with Godfrey Icon, shard of Alexander, AND the axe talisman, everything comes back as a 1258. Same for the charged attack tear. Multi-attack talismans and tear work normally. Spear talisman is weird, because it's really hard to test and very inconsistent. You have to aggro an albinauric, bait their attack combo, then space out the R2's last hit - and every time I managed to do that, it somehow hit for either the same, or for less. Sometimes it's 1.1k, sometimes it's 800.
Except when it hit for 800, that Albinauric was nearly dead. That was about when I got tired of trying to test this weapon. Either NOTHING works with it that SHOULD work with it except for the multi-hit stuff, or they DO work, and it just doesn't come across properly (which I don't buy; if the weapon was doing overkill you'd still see the adjusted damage number even if there's some weird gimmick going on with the X shape of the final R2 hit. and it came up the same number too consistently with too many changed modifiers for me to believe that. According to the other wiki the albinaurics at the farming ledge have 1190hp for the record.)
The twinblade talisman doesn't work for the buffed R2 but probably works for everything else because the buffed R2 is just one attack that never chains into anything. Makes sense, works the same way on most weapons with multiple hits.
Scorpion charm and holy tear work as expected with the buff though. 18strength/80dex/25faith goes 451 -> 551 -> 563 -> 585 with the buff, scorpion talisman and physik in effect, in that order. Whether or not the defense loss is worth the amount added by the scorpion charm on an weapon dependent on a fair chunk of poise or light rolling is up to you.
All in all, SHOULD work with a lot more things than it does. Logic dictates it should work with the spear and axe talisman, Godfrey's Icon, and the charged attack tear. It wouldn't make sense for it to work with Alexander Shard, so that's fine, but one has to be certain. It DOES work with the swaddling cloth, by the way. That thing can proc even when an enemy's in the middle of dying so it's decent value outside of bossfights.

This weapon is why Fromsoft needs to step into the modern age as far as HUD design and info conveyance go. It's ****ing impossible to tell what works with it and what doesn't.
- Anonymous
Only weapon I'm salty towards, someone kept spamming its skill in pvp, and it was nearly inescapable for me, no mater which direction i rolled, i would just get caught up in the attack again. I'm glad it's been nerfed a bit, though i haven't encountered someone using it since, so there's no way for me to tell if the nerf has made it any easier.

The buffed charged R2 does not get enhanced by either Godfrey Icon nor Axe Talisman.
- Anonymous
I slept on these all throughout two playthroughs, now I'm at the end of NG+ just killing time and trying things in anticipation of Shadow of the Erdtree, and I'm pissed at myself for not using this earlier. A lot of fun and capable of putting up some big numbers, even this late into my character. Give it a try!

While buffed, if you use R2, throw a dagger, and the R2 again you use a glitched unintentional move which is ridiculously strong and can poise through even colossal weapons

Something interesting I noticed while playing around with these, there's 3 cancel points for a charged heavy. If you just tap it, you get the cross stab. If you hold it a bit, you get 1 flurry, and can either cancel it for the stab or go for another flurry. If you go for the second flurry, the stab afterwards can also be charged, it comes out just a small bit faster if you stop holding it during the second flurry and let the attack finish on its own, compared to holding the button down the entire way though.

Should get buffed by Godfrey icon. I see no difference with moonlight gs

Wanted to do a pure dex run but wasn’t sure what starting weapon to invest in.
Didn’t feel like using a katana or the Cross Naginata at the moment.
Nobel Slender Sword would be a pain to farm.
Want to get the Petal Whip but that will take time and I don’t want to kill Diallos.
Decided to give these swords a try and I surprisingly like it.
They are not just ornametal, from my experience they are actually functional, take them seriously

You wouldn't guess at first, but these babies are best left in the hands of a Quality or Dexterity Build. The benefit of Golden Epitaph on the offhand makes
Golden Tempering even more satisfying. You know what Talisman(s) you want to use with these: Axe Talisman and... *sorry Millicent*.
- Anonymous
Excellent option for those who want to sword and board but are worried about dps.
You can activate the special heavy one handed and can devastating given the way counter attacks work, if you catch someone off guard.
I was messing around with these with a parry shield and it was really fun,
people just mindlessly mash into you sometimes and then you can follow up with the modified CRIT from this, plus the extra buff dmg so you don't really NEED to switch to a dagger (unless you like almost/straight-up one-tapping people, but to each their own I guess).
Then you can pressure with the r2.
And I guess if all else fails you can use it paired if you need an edge against a try hard, or someone running away on low health.

I love weapons that have various moves and give you options for mixups. This is one of the holy grails of that category.
2-handed after AoW you have a special R2 that is really powerful. You also have a thrusting R2 when unbuffed. You have a block (for daggers or throw ables mostly). The special R2 chain is not great but as a mixup it can surprise people.
The damage is solid as well. If you use last rites on the golden epitaph then switch to this and use the AoW you're looking at 125 holy damage + your physical damage and BOTH OF THOSE are boosted 10% (5%pvp). Throw in some multiattack talismans and the damage is insane

It's insane that if you start as a Samurai and shot Grafted Scion with fire arrows dead during tutorial fight, you can use this swords at the very start of the game. This is your easy difficulty lol :D
- Anonymous
I just wanna say a couple things
1.) In PVP, if you stagger with the special r2 you can immediately start charging the flurry which often roll catches people unless they roll behind you (sometimes it still does) and 50% of the time you hit them with the whole flurry minus the last double strike
2.) Also in PVP you can use the special flurry as bait and then release the r2 and it will often out-trade things a few weapon classes bigger with the spear talisman
3.) This thing feels amazing when used correctly with its very versatile move-set that can handle almost any situation, and I suggest everybody gives this weapon a try who hasn't already
- Anonymous
I'm a huge fan of this weapon's strong attack, and not for the reason that most people like it. Yes, the super fast thrusts are really cool, but to pull off the full combo you'll need heavy armor (I'm talking full Banished Knight set or more) a piss ton of stamina, and a lot of health. No, instead I like it's strong attack uncharged- just the crouching upward thrust. The crouch seems to take your hurtbox much lower than one might expect, allowing you to duck under the windups of a lot of chunky strikes, land a hard counter damage thrust, and evade the followup easily, since the endlag is very short. Not to mention even the uncharged stab seems to deal a LOT of damage to stances- it can stagger even large enemies out of their windups. This weapon is great, just don't expect TOO much out of it. It is the first dropped weapon you can get, after all.
- Anonymous
Use this with the Golden Epitaph. The “Last Rites” skill will give you an extra +25 flat holy damage, and a 10% (5% in PVP) buff on top. The Ornamental Straight Sword becomes highly usable with 125 holy damage (except the high holy resist bosses ofc).

This weapon is just hilarious. I've been looking for some unique pure dex weapons, and I'm so glad I tried this one. The buffed+charged Scion spam combo is a lot of fun. It has quite a bit of forward momentum and decent tracking, so you can just continue spamming down the boss even if they move a little bit. And the charged attack consumes very surprisingly little stamina.
I used it a bit as a co-operator against the Fire Giant today. Fire Giant stops moving for a second, I start spamming. When most weapons would run out of stamina, I can just continue spamming. When the Giant Moves his leg a little and I must close the gap, I just continue spamming.

UNDERRATED WEAPON im mad no one gives it credit for what it is, the perfect early game invasion weapon, the amount of hosts that send me hatemail for defeating their gank saying im a twink for having "op weapon" makes me laugh, is nice to finally feel rewarded for killing the tutorial boss this is the only souls game where is worth it, i defeated the scion with a lv1 and after that i just had to level up 4 dex and thats it, the rest i put it on vigor and keep myself below level 20, this weapon is powerstanced straight swords not only thats good enough but buffed you get some nice extra damage that is very important early game when nothing has good scaling, you get a r2 that is way better than any straight sword r2 and a r2 double poke running attack, in other words this is much better than normal powerstanced swords where all you do is L1 and sometimes jump attack, this weapon gives you a better moveset and expands your timings to rollcatch and since patch 1.10 removed poise this got buffed and is possible to deal with overleveled phantoms, and you can even have a shield on the left hand, use the aow of the sword and return to hold the shield to have the the option to parry and the unique r2 at the same time even tho you are not powerstancing the swords
These weapons particularly shine early on and get weaker as you progress into the game. In short, these are really strong at low levels, but I never see anyone actually using these to melt people at low levels, whether they be hosts, phantoms, or invaders.
- Anonymous
I feel like these weapons would fit much better as heavy thrusting swords. The dual-wielded moveset of hts looks much closer to how the boss uses them, and that category is lacking weapons anyways.
- Anonymous
What is the point of Golden Tempering giving the weapon holy essence, if it doesn't do anything? Skeletons don't stay dead when killed while GT is active, which is what holy essence does, in fact it's the only thing it ever does in any weapon. It's very misleading. It's like getting the visuals of essence without the actual effect for no apparent reason. You only get the flat damage bonus and the moveset, essence is there in name only.

This weapon got heavily needed couse u used to be able to hold in in your secondary hand activate the special and switch your main hand 2 a different weapon and you stil would be able to use it special double sword R2. While also giving you your normal special it whas like having 2 specials but i just saw now you just do a normal heavy

Anyone know why the Golden Tempering charged heavy doesn't benefit from the Axe Talisman or the Spiked Tear?
- Anonymous
If the special non charged Heavy Atk of this weapon had better tracking and a little bit of hyperarmor, I think it would be viable in PVP
- Anonymous
Saw a few people asking this, so I tested it, the axe talisman does NOT work on golden tempering. A full golden tempering combo without the axe talisman did 754 damage, with the axe talisman equipped still 754 damage. Tested 10 times, 5 with talisman 5 without, the Elleh Godrick soldier, NG+3, non-upgraded ornamental straight sword. The axe talisman works normally non-tempered OSS heavy attacks but at that point why are you using the OSS?

Actually makes good use of the blue dancer charm since it only weighs 3 pounds despite being 2 swords.

Did they ever patch the axe talisman for this weapon? Does it get the added damage from the talisman now?

It's like a mix of straight swords and rapiers. It may not has much damage and long reach, but the moveset is very good for PVP. For PVE, I suggest to use other powerstancing straight swords as they are definitely better in all terms.
- Anonymous
Much better as a secondary weapon if you are on first playthrough lol. Use it with a stronger straight sword as see it mash bosses with l1 spams
- Anonymous
Sometimes I think it might not be doing holy damage just increasing base dmg. Every other holy buff will kill skeletons this needs the extra ground hit. Would not be first time something was appling diff dmg type to what is listed in fromsoft game.

In NG+ is it possible when you get a second one of these to dual wield both of these swords together? As in have 4 of them at the same time?

excellent pve weapon, but for pvp dont even bother with the full combo unless the person your fighting has goldfish brain syndrome

Can confirm, axe talisman and spiked cracked tear have no effect on golden tempering's unique heavy attack.

Please correct this article. The axe talisman has been verified to have NO effect on damage output of this weapon, irrespective of what you might think.

Okay, the below comment was mine. It turns out scaling on the OSS is very poor so at max level it drastically underperforms a regular sword. Okay sword early, but garbage late.
- Anonymous
Landing the full r2 combo is kind of living the dream so I wouldn't hang my hat on that. The straight r2 is okay but the buff from the l2 isn't much to write home about.
But it is the strongest dex sword and it's working exceptionally well off hand in a dual wield straight sword dex build.
I'm using a nobles slender sword With bloodhound step as the primary but it would be objectively better with Thunderbolt. I'm just doing a pure melee run.

Referring to AR.
Tested on giants by war masters shack and full combo, once sequential attack buffs were activated was doing close to 5k damage. Granted most bosses won’t give you time to execute the combo. I’d be interested to see if you can catch malenia with it since she has such little poise.

Messing around with buffs with this, jellyfish great shield, fgms, golden vow, rotten winged sword insignia (talisman), got at from 386 (at +9) to 880, with holy scorpion charm, Millicents prosthesis got it to 1023… granted fgms/jellyfish buff wears off in 30 seconds - and it’s probably be worth having some defensive talismans like godskin swaddling. I swear with thorny cracked tear I saw at hit 1500 something for a split sec due to all the consecutive hit buffs, pretty nuts

if you can get your hands on it early it it makes for a very comfy run through stormveil

Just found a bug that if you do an uncharged heavy after buffing and throw a throwing knife right after then immediately follow with another uncharged heavy it does a barbaric roar like final swing holding both blades together

To the comment after the one below me, it literally adds holy damage dude. Holy damage generally doesn’t insta kill undead enemies it just does more damage against them. Few things in this game can insta kill skeletons, sacred blade or holy pots are one of them.
- Anonymous
Very, very good weapon, but it has a few quirks to keep in mind. AoW gives it flat 100 holy damage which is not affected by the weapon level, so its more noticeable in early game, but still nice late game. Not sure if scorpion charm buffs it, it should, but 12 holy damage is nothing. Changed heavy attack has pretty good tracking, so dont worry about your opponent just stepping aside, unless they roll behind you it will hit. But charged changed heavy attack (damn thats a mouthful) kinda plays out in three parts - bunch of stabs - more stabs - crest slash and keep in mind - time between more stabs and crest slash is enormous, most if not all weapons can hit you in that time so be mindful about trading with it. It also deals pathetic damage to poise in pve, so dont even try to use it on sturdier enemies unless they are staggered. Alternatevly - give a chanse to uncharged changed heavy attack - it just crest slash, but it has nice damage, pretty fast and staggers enemies good. It stunlocks omens and onyx lords, but isnt that good at breaking their stance
- Anonymous
The description of golden tempering implies the damage it does is holy. it is not as it doesnt insta kill skeletons.
- Anonymous
Axe Talisman + Spear talisman + Winged/Millicent Talisman + Spiked Tear + Thorny Tear
Hold down R2 and enjoy killing everything that doesnt wear 3 layers of armour and block. Alternatiely, use the stonebreaker tear and demolish even the toughest enemies with crits.
If you're already going for DEX with a side of FAI, consider taking golden vow and rejection into your repertoire. Become the true scion of the golden lineage!

Granted, I'm on NG+, but for someone who completed the entirety of endgame on NG relying on Blasphemous Blade as a crutch it's something of an accomplishment. Uncharged buffed heavies use two swords without you having to switch from 1H to 2H, which pairs amazingly with guard couter-centric strategy I utilized. They come out very quickly, just to fill in the tight window knights leave to you. Probably would've been easier with Golden Parry but newly buffed Barricade Shield worked well for me.

I wish the block animation would make the character cross the swords
Not that blocking with it would be of any use but the style points! Damn id love it

Could be a result of a buff in 1.07. Fresh character - just put a couple points into dex to equip, no upgrades/talismans/etc. Just the AoW buff. A fully charged R2 nearly 1 combo'd Patches during the first encounter. Over 500 damage. Needs further testing but easily an early game monster now.

Can we put other buffs like Bloodflame blade or one of the greases on it? I don’t think it’d be particularly useful, but it’d be cool as like a theme build.

I have to say this has to be one of the most underrated pure Dex weapons.
I played with this weapon for quite a while, and I feel like out of all the straight swords it has by far the most interesting/ varied moveset.
Not only does Ornamental straight sword, inherit basically all the same moves that every other straight sword has when power stanced (Aside from ashes of war), but it also has:
Unique power stanced Jumping Light attack that hits 3 times.
Unique power stanced Heavy attack (Two versions of it, since it changes while Golden Tampering is active)
Unique power stanced charged Heavy attack (Two versions of it, since it changes while Golden Tampering is active)
Unique power stanced running heavy attack.
All the other straight swords are honestly boring as hell to me, compared to this weapon. It's varied moveset makes this weapon especially good and underrated in pvp, since you have so many additional different attack patterns that other straight swords do not.
One thing I would recommend if building around this weapon is using both Miliscents Prosthesis, and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia talismans. This weapon stacks the buff really quickly, since jumping R1 is 3 attacks, and R2 during Golden Tampering is like 10 attacks. I feel like non bleed swords can really use that extra damage oomph that you get from those talismans.
You could also add Thorny Cracked Tear for even more damage, since all 3 consecutive attack buffs stack, but I personally prefer 2 defensive physick buffs, especially for pvp, where you won't always be able to trigger the buff reliably. Basically a good mix of offense and defense is the way to go when building around this weapon.

skill is unaffected by godfrey icon, axe talisman, and shard of alexander

One of the best things about this weapon, once buffed, is that you can hold a shield in your offhand and using the heavy attack will bring out the other sword. It’s good for mix ups, and also if you prefer to normally use just one of the swords.
Really cool and underrated thing about this weapon is that it's AOW is basically carried over to it's charged R2, and you can still use the dual wielding combo attack, while single handling the weapon.
This means that it pairs nicely with shields. If you put Skill on your Shield, like let's say a parry it overwrites the skill of your weapon. But since this weapon's AOW is in it's R2, you can have Shield AOW, and still have access to your weapons AOW.
is it just me or do these massively increase discovery? almost everything I killed dropped!!

Great weapon. Really wish they would give it’s AoW hyper armor. Or make it like the Regalia of Eochiad AoW where you can opt out the last hit by rolling. It’ll make it more versatile and give you more opportunities to use the AoW since you won’t be completely at the mercy of it’s telegraph.

I Made a whole build for this weapon and it IS actually pretty strong. With the special charged R2 and buffs i die about 3K damage on a boss. The only downside is on the weapon is the missing hyper armor on the charged R2s. All in all i think its an underestimated weapon.

Special charged r2 needs actual hyperarmor and it would be chef's kiss.

The unique charged heavy attack combo that you get with Golden Tempering active does not seem to be affected by the Axe Talisman. Tested against an NG+2 Godrick Soldier with unupgraded Ornamental Straight Swords, the full combo did 448 damage both with and without Axe Talisman

Uncharged strong attack with the AoW active is just the final attack of the combo

Probably the most underrated weapon in the game. First weapon you can get is also the best. With Blue Dancer, 2x Millicent talismans and Claw Talisman you melt all. No need for AoW either, plain blades are fire. AoW is just gravy. Charged heavy is like another AoW. Ludicrous weapon.
What is stance damage on the " golden tempered " heavy attack ?
