Negations (or Absorptions)
The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.
Elden Ring Putrid Tree Spirit Boss Guide
Putrid Tree Spirit Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Putrid Tree Spirit:
- If possible, bring Scarlet Rot Talismans such as Kindred of Rot's Exultation which can increase attack power or Immunizing Horn Charm which raises Immunity
- Use Meteorite Spell to cause it to stagger
- Summon Rotten Stray Ashes
- Use Bloodhound's Step to help with the boss's quick movements
- Be ready upon entering the fog gates, as it approaches for an attack almost immediately. If considering Summons, call them after this initial action
- Use pillars in the arena if available but we wary because they can be destroyed.
- Be aware of the safe corners in between attacks to find an opportunity to drink your flask.
- Always consider your position because this large creature can be faced in a small arena
- Lighten your load to perform swift dodges and movements since this boss has quick movements
- Consider not using camera lock on since this boss can take up the whole screen.
- Use heavy weapons and spells to stagger
- At ~50% health, does an AOE Scarlet Rot explosion. Run away and find a spot on the ground without a flame visual FX and stand still. If you attempt to keep running away, you may run into another scarlet rot explosion behind you.
Melee Users
Can be staggered, which is very effective as its head takes increased damage, and this makes it much more accessible while he is on the ground. Consider going for attacks directly on the head while it is stance broken, instead of a critical strike. Two main methods with melee is to constantly circle around its head when lowered or reach its tail and attack from there to avoid most of it's directional attacks. Hug its back side since most attacks will come from the head. When it starts to pull back, be ready to dodge and dives or spontaneous movement dashes from the boss. Bloodhound's Step could be considered if available to dodge its quick attacks faster and to help with countering. Use a combination of waiting for its dive attacks, dodging through and repositioning around the beast to get as many hits in while out of its line of sight until HP is depleted. Keep an eye on your Scarlet Rot.
Magic and Ranged Users
Can be burst down with Meteorite. As soon as you enter the fog door, target the boss and move right. It will try to attack. Immediately cast meteorite close to it and hold the button. It should stagger which allows you to drink a blue potion to replenish your FP. You might need enough FP for this to work. Another spell to consider is Rock Sling, which deals great physical damage and can also stagger it. If your FP is out and it doesn't stagger, you don't have enough Mind stat. Note: meteorite needs to be cast close to the target for it to hit. Though there is not a lot of free space in the arena where this boss is found so creating distance for longer ranged attacks will be a challenge. To aid with this, it is recommended to use Spirit Ashes during this encounter. Continue your attacks in between the windows of this boss's attack until it is defeated.
Putrid Tree Spirit Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Head Slam | The Tree Spirit lifts its head and smashes down for a slam | Dodge roll backwards to avoid the landing zone as soon as you see its head lift upwards. |
Tail Whip | If on its back side, it will pull back its tail before sweeping it in a swift motion | Roll Through this attack or run away and reposition |
Scarlet Rot Explosion | Sends out a blast and effects a large vicinity | It is a good idea to have something equipped that could reduce these effects first. Once the spirit emits a glow, put as much distance between you and the Tree Spirit to minimize effects. |
Dive Grab | With an open mouth, it will attempt to swallow you and this will heavily affect you with Rot | Immediately dodge away and circle far back if you can to get out of the line of sight. |
Slide Dive | Swoops in for a dive dealing massive damage | Like the other dive attack, Immediately dodge away and circle far back if you can to get out of the line of sight. |
Fire Breathing | The Tree Spirit begins to lower its head and angles itself to breath fire on its victims. | Since this is a directional attack, step out of the line of damage, reangle yourself and this should give you an opportunity to attack during this action. |

**Rune Level 1 No Weapon Upgrades, No Summons**
Buffs:
-Do NOT use a Scar/Soreseal, Instead focus on weight talismans and stamina regen
-load up on Heavy Armor (Banished/Radahn) for Physical Absorption
-Use golden vow with a dagger
-Dmg reduction and stamina Physick (if trying to stagger, pair up the Dmg reduction Physick with the Stagger one)
-Pop a prawn
*All of this will mean you’ll get 2-Shot instead of 1-shot by every Phase 1 attack except for the Grab/Rot Attacks*
Weapon(s):
-Bloodflame Blade/Blood Grease on Bloodhound Step Hook Claws (Spam R1)
-If you have a 2nd Hook Claw infuse it with cold and use Quickstep or Bloodhound Step, Swap to it during phase 2 - OR - Cold Infused Lions Claw Flamberge (Spam Jump Attacks/Weapon Art for Stagger)
Strategy:
-Hug the right side of its belly to avoid most attacks, tail whip can be avoided by dodging/stepping left (follow the swipe…will not be hit if you’ve positioned to the right side of its belly)
-Grab is super telegraphed, jump toward it after you see it glide away and begin the descending lunge
-Find out how to avoid the Rot AOE at 50% (Phase 2) and you’ll enjoy melting the rest of the hp bar…I found this to be the only unpredictable attack and the turning point for any attempt
-By Phase 2, most buffs will have expired…which is fine since you’ll get 1-Shot by everything regardless…this is why I swapped to a weapon with a cold infusion to deal a new status effect as well as continuing to build up bleed, if you find openings, toss a Fire Pot to reset the Cold Proc…the weapon swap will allow you to melt the hp bar quicker with Cold and Bleed to avoid numerous AoE attacks

The haligtee version is easy when you get back on the branch and just spam it with ranged attacks.

Volcanic pots, fire grease/bloodflame blade, and bloodhound step are amazing against this guy. Bring your mimic tear for double the fun! I don't think I was supposed to take on this dungeon at lv 70, but here I am! :)
- Anonymous
this boss would be fine in Haligtree if every one of his attacks didn't launch you into the stratosphere like a Skyrim frost giant even if it misses you
- Anonymous

there are a couple missing right. I know for sure there is one in the lake of rot, and I think one on mt gelmeir too.

lul. The Haligtree battle.
Malenia took me about 10 tries to learn how to dodge waterfowl dance from midrange and then to get the f away from scarlet aeonia. This mf was way more of an issue, and I ended up cheesing it by popping a speckled hardtear/cerulean hidden tear and just permacasting stars of astel from the small hill opposite where you drop in.
Further note: you can wake the tree spirit up from a specific point on the very edge of the shorter, far hill, and it can hit you with the breath attack and maybe the grab attack but not anything else. The larger hill, on the side near where you drop in, you will not activate the boss, and it can't hit you there unless it walks around the hill and starts climbing it, which it generally does. You can sometimes hide on that hill in stealth and get it to de-aggro and chuck black flames off.
Hp is wrong. This thing in war dead has 30k easily. Ive dealt more than 18k in damage.

Boss isn’t hard when you learn the tells. Putrid was actually fun when using flame strike.

Oh hey let’s give a boss with inscrutable hit boxes huge aoes that inflict the worst status effect in the game and an a one shot grab attack. Artificial difficulty in its purest form

I play as a INT build mage.
As with almost every boss-fight as a mage: if it takes more than 1 minute per 10k hp of the boss, you are doing something wrong.
For the one in War-Dead Catacombs, I summoned Black Knife Tiche and when she got the agro, I ran close to the boss and started sapmming Shard Spiral.
Boss went down in under a minute.

Quote simply, a magic user’s worst nightmare. Have tried to kill the one in War Hero’s Catacombs for days now. Tried everything, just can’t make it…ps the rotten stray is absolutely useless for this fight
- Anonymous
I actually don't feel like this boss is THAT hard, but there are far too many putrid and ulcerated tree spirits in this game. I've gone from struggling to fight them to being really tired of seeing them.
- Anonymous
Beat the one in war-dead catacombs, checked inventory before fast traveling out, game instantly crashed, start game back up again and my character was falling into the void of nothingness before instantly dying and losing all 65000 runes I got from the boss and putting them in an unreachable place. 10/10 great game design feature.
I had just opened the chest protected by all the shrimp guys in the Grand Cloister and I chose to use Margit’s Shackle to look around for hidden secrets and all the sudden I noticed that there was a health bar ticking down off in the distance. I had cleared the place out (decent farming spot for me at the moment) except for the Putrid Tree Spirit (which gave me a heart attack the first time of course) so I started running backwards towards the rot waterfall (rotterfall?) and it seems that the Putrid Tree Spirit has been dispatched. Is this a glitch or did I trigger something that killed the PTS? Did anyone else experience this?

Easily the biggest cluster**** of design in this game, impossible to see what's going on, no clue where the hitboxes are, borderline unavoidable oneshot attacks. Good luck.
- Anonymous
After the forward head slam (which provides a decent punishing window) he will ALWAYS either do another forward head slam (signaled by neck going upwards) OR the super-wide neck swipe (signaled by curling the neck to the side - this one has a pretty long preparation time so its kind of easy to discern) -
Also I've noticed that after its dive attack either ends on itself (double or once) or what is much MORE OFTEN , ends with fire breathing (good for punishing too)

One of the most memorable souls game encounters for me. Had to learn this putrid gator mass behavior by heart as my build could not survive any of its hits (yes, that means any contact). You can imagine the rest.

Flame of the Redmanes + Misericorde saves the day yet again! I'm not sure what I'm doing different but I only needed 2 hits to stance break it compared to the other comments here who needed 3-4 hits.
Could've been my Troll Sword + Cragblade on the 1st half and Engvall dunking nonstop. It really was a pain to hit tho until I switched to FotR.

After getting wrecked multiple times:
- roll toward and slightly to the right, circling in, stay just behind and to the right of presumably ass or next to lower right belly (watch out for arm stomp aoe)
- after successful dodge to that kind of position, time for maybe two light attacks of heavy weapon (possibly three) (frost is good if you have it)
- camera lock is okay even though you can't see the whole thing, try to read body twirl timing and roll close to avoid hitboxes
- for summons choose one that can stay alive until second phase even if not doing much damage
- use a good attack window to heal if necessary
- watch out for tail swipe
- maintain pressure and closeness if possible

This thing is pretty resistant to rot. Highly recommended frost for dragon casters.

This boss was so hard it caused my game to crash and my computer froze. Time to power off for the night

Too bad Alexander left the place after Radahn's death. He missed the true boss of Caelid.
Jokes aside, I spent 3x time and attempts more on this mf. I'm so dissatisfied.

Doesn't this thing have 2 scarlet breath attacks? One of them being more like what the dragon breath is, but the other being more like a mortar? Cause I'm playing on the older Xbox and the visuals for the mortar one seem pretty off so I came here to see if I'm just addressing the move wrong. But I don't see that attack listed

I never had any problem killing these, I died the first time I tried the tree spirit at the bottom of stormveil but I had a better idea of what it was about on the second attempt. The putrid tree spirit at the bottom of Elpael brace of the Haligtree was different it killed me a load of times before I got lucky. I don't really fancy trying to beat this one but I'm really struggling with Malenia and her wiki recommends knight Ogha being a good choice to summon for her, so I think its worth a try just to see, a boss room in a dungeon is going to be bigger than where you fight the on at Elphael so maybe it wont be as bad.
I beat it after a few tries with a tanky mimic tear, frost pots and volcano pots. It procd frostbite after one frost pot, then I let my mimic tear draw all of the aggro and spammed the volcano pots from the other side of the room. Anytime it got close to me I turned target lock off and sprinted away, and I finished the fight in probably a minute or two. I think I was level 95? Cheers and good luck to everyone :)

war-dead catacombs was makin me crazy. once i got the lever thrown & got to the boss, i didn't even get out of the door the first try, but the second time i summoned black knife tiche and ran like hell to the back of the room almost to where the pile of skellies is. once tiche got his attention i spammed rock sling until he staggered, then just kept hitting him. when he did his scarlet rot explosion, everything landed in front of me so i just kept spamming (mostly out of fear for my life). most amazing was i used one FP pot to kill him. beginner's luck maybe but i'll take it......

I 3 shot Radahn without summons as melee just for this damn tree to murder me 50+ times and hold my Radahn runes hostage

This strategy for spellcasters is complete bs. With 51 Int and the sorcery boosting physick, it did a reasonable amount of damage, but the way you need to hold still for meteorite means you're just fodder. Even with a summon out, you're instantly pulling aggro back to yourself on the off-chance your summon manages to get it off you. I have enough vigor and mind that if I *could* keep the thing off me the tactic might work and I can tank a couple hits. But summons simply do not hold aggro sufficiently.
- Anonymous
Trust me when I tell you to use the Skeletal Militiaman Ashes. Preferably upgraded a level. The full moon attack she does kills any summon in almost a single hit, but those minions will get right back up and continue distracting her (as well as her ash summons). Killed her first try when I stopped using wolves AMD switched to the skeletons.

Based on all of the previous comments, I came to the conclusion that I'm severely under leveled and have been playing the game wrong. This is my first souls game so all this stuff is a new experience. I'm level 61 but I'm seeing comments saying they're either 90 and above or on new game plus. I didn't even know there was a new game plus. People are also recommending weapons and spells I have never seen in my playthrough yet. Not to mention seeing level 10 and up weapon levels. My highest weapon is a crystal sword at level 6! Im starting to think i got this far by only pure luck and willpower so I might have to come back to this fight later or try to fight it again for another 30 or more times like I did with Radahn. I guess I'm at the point where I get good or go home. You dark souls people are crazy and I think you're rubbing off on me.

Just a heads up for anyone reading this page before trying the boss, this says it is strong against poison and scarlet rot but the numbers given as its resistances to both are 252 that is very close to the highest resistances given for omen in the subterranean shunning grounds at 250 and I had no problems inflicting poison on them and those in leyndell catacombs with poison arrows and poison bone darts. It only takes five or six hits then sit back and watch their health bar get decimated. If the numbers given here for this tree spirit are accurate poison and scarlet rot are perfectly viable to use against it.

For STR builds, powerstanced greathammers worked best for me vs him. He seems quite vulnerable to the jump attacks. All you need to do is stay close and jump attack him. I staggered him more than 5 times with this strategy. Keep flame cleanse me for safe measure.

strategy described for magic users does not work, must be some joke put here to mess with people. Meteor does not stagger it at all

FROSTBITE WRECKS HIM - lvl 98 - icerind hatchet +5 two handed (great weapon, low reqs, even great vs dragons) and go to town with your summon. this boss and other avatar bosses are designed to mess you up when you're medium or far distance. he can certainly 1 or 2 shot you no problem. stay right next to him and keep the pressure on. the AI doesn't know what to do. swing away and you'll start doing 2000 damage proc with frostbite. when he starts exploding in the 2nd phase, just flask up and preserving boluses. he's 10x easier to dodge when you're on top of him. wondrous flask with crimsonburst & greenburst. good luck!

Must have died over 50 times to this boss, but finally defeated him in my underpants! Lvl 119, mainly ystr/dxt/int build, lance+13, gilded greatshield, seal with rotten breath, and greatshield, radagon's soreseal and starscourge heirloom talismans. Just blocked and stabbed him, kept close at all times except when he exploded in rot, and blew rotten breath on him once. Finally got the bastard down.

there are 2 strategies ive found effective on these, all the different versions...
frostbite SHREDS it, the debuff is nearly double damage once frostbitten and the frostbite itself deals enough damage to be respected
godslayer sword MELTS this thing like NOTHING else

Crazy annoying bossfight as an ending to one of the most punishing - but still fun! - dungeons. The boss itself could f... up most world bosses and demigods like nothing! It's HP is punishing, the movement - for me at least - is extremely unpredictible, lightning fast and the dmg output, well, absolutely insane. Spice it up with scarlet rot and a "one shot" ability, which is so carefully designed it won't one shot you but the built-up scarlet rot will and you end up having one of the most memorable bosses, for all the unwanted reasons. Obnoxious. Try using frostbite maybe...? I just gave up for today, will return later. My Tree sentinel halberd albeit brutal is not that suited since this monster has 40% against holy.

i hate trees i love bp and lumber conglomerates for deforestation and destroying the environment

Outsidw the fog door, cast rock sling, when the rocks dont reach the boss, enter the arena, i promise you the AI will be broken. Cast a ranged ashes, latenna preferably or attack with bows, but do not stagger it because the AI will be back again.

Took 3 tries. I was using the godslayer great sword with a dex/faith build. I just stayed underneath the monster and spammed the weapon art

is seriously fun, decided to challenge myself in NG+4 against him with 2 +20 hoslow whips, one with frostbite, the other with poison that I've been experimenting with. Beat him first try, but was challenging enough. it is easy to read, so even though it could kill me in 2-3 hits, it was fun

got him on 3rd try, summon spirit ashes to distract, while I just spewing Agheel Flame then chug blue estus, repeat 3-4 times from safe distance, dodge/bh steps if he starts aggro +6 dragon seal, 34 arcane, 22 mind.

So this boss is huge, but also insasnely quick, but also insanely damaging, but also unpredictable, but also insanely tanky, but also has a ohk grab attack, but also doesnt have a stake of marika, but also is too big to fit in his room, but also has one of the worst cameras in the franchise and is, by the way, recycled tons of times through the game. What idiot greenlit this? the game has boss fights like godrick, or radahn, but also THIS ****. Makes me want to pull my hair out

I’m a strength build. I was able to beat him using the giant crusher+14 with chilling mist Ash of war. Also used the mottled necklace+1, claw & Ragadon’s scarseal talisman. For spirit Ash I used banished knight Engvall+5 to keep the focus off of me. I also had some preserving boluses just in case. I just went to town on him jumping and spamming L2. It eventually worked!

this boss is a complete joke, it says the strategy for magic is to move to the right and cast meteorite? did the person who wrote this even play the same game as me? u cant move ot the right or u get 1 shot instantly, tbh i think that needs to be removed so people dont waste their time
Just defeated the one in the War-Dead Catacombs, after thousands of tries. No summons, but used a +14 Greatsword infused with Frostbite damage, the Fingerprint Shield, Lionel's Armor Set. Remember that you can interrupt the Scarlet Rot attacks, and all you have to do is dodge the grab attacks. Expect to use up at least half of your flasks

Alright, with a Banished Knights Cold Halberd +13 with the Spinning Strikes Ash of War, and Greatshield soldier Ashes, I was able to melt this bastard in about a minute or two. Just try to stay on his butt, let your soldiers tank him, and start spinning. He'll be frozen, and down to half health in no time. At which point its AOE's will kill your guys, and you will definitely have Scarlet rot. Don't waste any consumables trying to cure it, just spam heal when needed (have lots of healing flasks for this fight). Just keep spinning, spam dodge if he looks like he is going to grab you (instant death), and you will be pointing down on his grave shortly with some luck.

Flame of the Redmanes. Flame.of.the.Redmanes. Seriously. Put on the Dagger talisman. 3-4 casts of FotR will stagger it, and you can get each cast off really quickly. Then get the crit with your flame infused weapon (I was using an Executioner's Fire Greataxe +16, Flame, Grant Me Strength + Golden Vow + Strength Knot & Leaden Hardtear) and it will SHRED his health. It won't turn the battle into a joke. You still have to dodge and be sure to run far away when it screeches and does it Scarlet Rot explosion. But it's works disgustingly well and is about as easy as this fight can get.

Just another garbage recycled boss with buffed stats in a tiny room where the camera just sh*ts itself. Boss will clip his head half through the wall or ceiling so I can't anticipate his 1 hit kill grab. 10 years for a game that recycles bosses half a dozen times spawned in asset reused dungeons. nice one

I just beat this boss on NG with no rune farming equipment and got 64k runes, not 67,200.

Two hoarfrost stomp apply Frost on him in phase 1. In phase 2 (when he catches fire), it seems to require 3-4 casts.
Hold simple source of fire in left hand (dagger + fire infusion) and hoarfrost source in right. Defrost him after every frost. This only pays off if you're low level though.

Killed by spamming Rock Sling while having friend hold aggro using the Shabriri's Woe talisman that holds aggro.
Alternatively, use the Putrid Corpse Spirit summons, which also hold aggro.

My favorite part is when the camera is pointing as a wall or a leg or who knows and then a mouth comes from some direction or another, and then I gotta restart

I was srtuggling for half an hour and then i noticed something, he's too big for his own good. stick to the right and almost all of his attacks can be avoided with a good ole roll. His grapple is predictable as he'll always roar and raise himself and clip through the wall most of the time. ROLL INTO IT. Everytime i entered the room i always applied black flame to my great sword and was able to knock 1/4 of health rather quickly. I then did the above strategy until i staggered him. When he does his AOE run to the tree stage if possible. Then a bit after when i staggered him at 1/4 health i summoned my mimic tear. He was out in no time.
Threw the Dark Moon at it and causing immediate debuff and Frostbite, then Carian Sliced it to death while dodging. Very fun

use dragonice for forst and black flame(it last a very short amount of time, be prepared to use repeatedly) on a fast attack weapon(i use it on a twinblade). this is the recipe to shred this bs boss using a melee fighter. i am lv50 mind you. one hit is all it takes to kill me and i can't do meaningful damage to him but with this recipe i found. i was able to shred him in matter of 3~4 minutes. btw don't worry about the weapons damage. it is the black flame that will eat his HP alongside frost for extra damage.

I used cold grave scythe +25 with hoarfrost stomp and black knife tiche and was a breeze on my third go.
I killed it before it killed me with rot. That's all that matters. I got the drops and went back for my runes after respawn.
Eff these things.

4/19/22 damn I've been summoned for this boss about 20 times today through the summoning pool as soon as I enter my sign. Dude is popular.

Spam the **** out of hoarfrost stomp. I had Nightrider flail +14. 70 int. Spells are too slow for this fight. With luck, bleed and frost should proc when you need them to. Distract with spirit ash but anything you choose will die about halfway anyway. Hug the body and spam that hoarfrost, smack when you run out flask and don't have time to charge. Good luck! This boss is an absolute nightmare. I couldn't even see my character.

Kept trying strategy after strategy to no avail until I reached this one: just spam friggin rock sling and dodge like heck. It's simple enough, but here's some context i guess. My int is level 70, mind 30, and endurance 22. Used Carian Scepter+10 in right hand (Lusat's is fine but i didn't want to risk precious time on flasks) and Meteorite Saff in the other hand for gravity boost. I cast Unseen Form beforehand (idk f it helped), downed one Blackguard Boiled Crab, and had a physick w/magic-shrouding tear and crimson bubble. Summoned Engvall+7 because he has HP and i had FP to spare. Talismans were Graven-school, green turtle, kindred of rot's exultation, and radagon icon. Using an immunity booster talisman works too, I just made up for that with my armour.
I will say that i tried some of the intelligence-based strategies on here and failed miserably, this one was a one-shot win. This could mean I'm just a terrible sorcerer though. Like others said, the gravity spells break his stance like crazy and he just stops, giving you precious time for whatever. If he does go wild with the rot, do not stand on the flames on the ground. Also avoid getting caught in corners as much as possible, staying mobile and running to wherever he isn't bc it gives you more time to attack, drink, and space to dodge.

I found that this thing was really easy to poise break with Ash of War Glintblade Phalanx + jump attacks, got in like 10 poise breaks

Stay close to the belly and use frost weapons, pray to the erdtree that you have invested in enough stamina...

Why does every boss needs to have a rot variant? They are the only bosses other than godskin duo and malenia that are tedious to fight. And it's coming from some weirdo like me who even likes elden beast and fire giant
- Anonymous
I tried a bunch of strategies on him. What worked for me was godricks great rune to get me to 90 int, eat couple of buff foods, dual wield lusats + meteorite staff, precast unseen form, summon spirit (oleg+8), cast terra, pop stance break & infinite fp flask, hold down meteorite, he literally dissolves in 5-10s and he gets guard broken almost instantly.
- Anonymous
Rotten Stray ashes? Really? At this stage of the game those ashes will be wiped within seconds.
- Anonymous
Listen, this is only if you’re completely done with this boss’ bs and you don’t mind cheesing it. But if you have enough points to dump into int, dual wielding Lusats staff +10, and the meteorite staff and using meteor on it after sneaking up behind it with unseen form and popping a physick with the cerulean hidden tear and the magic boosting tear absolutely melts him before he has much time to react at all. It may take an attempt or two but it completely trivializes the fight

I beat the boss at lvl 50 with +10 spiked caestus in 3 tries. Most of his attacks are well telegraphed imo, it's the ****ing camera that makes it absolutely horrible. Use freeze or frost, maybe even both, the boss is weak to them. Also grab preserving boluses, they'll come in handy.
- Anonymous
Putting such an enemy in such a small room really fromsoftware? Cheap asses
- Anonymous
Only way I manage to beat this boss with a mage was to just cast night maiden mist and dodge around the arena with bloodhound step with my fist art of war and let the mist tick away damage and let me summon do the rest of the tanking.

First thing I've seen in Elden Ring that is legitimately badly designed. Other bosses felt unfair and cancerous but only because I sucked and hadn't figured them out, but this guy is just a mistake. Hitboxes drawn by a drunk late stage Parkinson's patient, much too large for the arena, and my attacks that clearly hit well inside his model just randomly whiff for no reason. This boss should not have made it to release in this state. Other bosses got me tilted but this is a Bed of Chaos type mistake.

Like rune bears, hug their belly, and hope you kill them before they kill you, both mostly accidentally

Spirit Ashes: Black Knife Tiche +10
Can solo this Boss fight.
Stick to his left side. roll to dodge when needed. attack with fire. a tanky summon helps alot
You can use Unseen Form and get around it without aggroing it to poison it from the side, as well. It does really low damage, so this is really only good if you don't have another heavy damage spell.

The fact that you can get killed by rot centipedes while fighting the one in grand cloister is artificial difficulty. They went from Sekiro boss designs to this.
