I'm pretty conflicted about the lack of faith scaling for weapons like this, as well as the other dragon weapons. The lack of faith scaling and high dex requirements makes some of these weapons really inconvenient to use with dragon cult incantations that would otherwise fit very well thematically, especially since the ash for the bolt of gransax makes up for the lack of a ranged ancient dragon lightning spear incantation.

Beating Godfrey isn't necessary to grab this. Directly below the weapong there is a gazebo with a Stonesword Key on the roof. Just jump onto the gazebo roof through the hole in the railing and then jump across to the building facade where the giant Bolt of Gransax is embedded. Be sure to aim for the corners of the facade that stick out more.

People who cry about missing out on the (albeit very cool-looking) raging wolf set on their first playthrough really don't know the pain of missing out on this absolute monster of a spear.

mfers in pvp really think they're special using other buttons instead of l2 like my boy we both know why you're using this and you're a one trick with this weapon, just throw the easily dodgeable bolts and lets move on

Adter testing on a bird perched in caelid next to a grace, I managed to test a few things:

Weapon art scales with DEX ONLY, the weapon attack rating scales with mostly dex and a good bump in strength
The best boosts in tandem with eachother are Godfrey icon and shard of alexander.
The bonus damage from testing in the foowing is classed by best to worse:
Shard of alexander (approx 19%)
Godfrey Icon (15%)
Lighting physics (15%)
Lighting scoprion charm (approx 8%)
Dex returns are really weak at above 65 dex (+23 damage for +5 dex)

Overall conclusion:

The weapon has a decent physical rating, actually works incredibly well with a shield (banished knight is very balanced) thanks to the blocking thrusts that absolutly shine with this weapon. Sacred scorpion charm seems a waste here, because the base lighting damage on the weapon isnt amazing. In my case it adds 30 damage to my AR. Best combo would simply stick to godfrey and alexander shard, and focus more on defense, since the charm reduces your defenses. Uncharged ash of war does decent damage (around 950), but the comittment to a fully charged doesnt change much and makes it reach over 2000 damage. The only reason you would not charge it would be to throw people off guard in pvp.
I use this in tandem with placiducax's heavy thrusting sword to swap out for a more melee approach, and use this as a sniper, or a good hard guard counter spammer.
Poise is super important, you would probably want to aim above 74 to hit the basic hit threshold for when you want to charge a spear without getting knocked out of it first.

Overall : cool weapon.

Power stance with lightning naginata, slap a melee AoW, and you have one of the deadliest multi range builds. Two hand naginata or double poke for melee and use the bolt for the best sniper in the game

Best weapon in game IMHO. Have done several playthroughs and this makes game probably too easy. Dex build. Little strength commitment. Then whatever else you want to do build wise Very few enemies this can't handle quickly. Gives you a range and Melee weapon in one. Great just as a spear paired with another spear I literally quit using it as game was not much of a challenge with it. If your first playthrough, this great beginner weapon to get familiar with game without getting crushed. Use Godfrey icon and Alexander shard. Its OP. Zap! Gone!

Even without all the buffs, with talismans (godfrey icon, scorpion, soreseal and alexander jar) and physick (dex + lightning) it's not a glass cannon, it's a glass ICBM. I casually one-shot hosts both at lvl 50 and 200 before they even see me. Liurnia water smells like fried casul flesh this time of year

I recently summoned a level 15-25 guy (I was level 17 at the time) and he was using the bolt of gransax WITH its AoW / skill.
I ran ahead at level 25 and grabbed it myself and cannot use the skill / AoW. There was no way the guy had the stats to use it. Anyone have an answer?

If you went off of comments alone you’d assume this game had like 6 faith weapons because every single armament has dozens of people complaining that it should be faith scaling, even though it has much more representation than int or arc and tons of awesome weapons.

So, it seems like Malenia has a hard time dodging the Ancient Lightning Spear. Makes phase 1 crazy easy at range. Not so much phase 2, though, once she drinks her Red Bull and starts actually chasing you around. She go fast.

Dont know why this weapon is praised so much. If you look at the stats, it has much lower base damage compared to a lightning infused spear. The skill is not that good either, its OK if you want to snipe someone but the animation is so long that bosses will just run up to you and slap you out of the air. It doesnt deal significantly more damage than chain casting thunderbolt and infact, the skill only does 5 poise damage so it cant stance break abductor virgins, which would have been a great niche for a lightning ranged skill.

Hoping for an incantantion similar to the Ancient Lightning Spear skill in the dlc. While regular Lightning Spear is good and certainly gets the job done when you want to kill things with lightning at a range, it's just weird and less fun to not have a heavy damage per cast ranged lightning spell similar to what magic damage and fire damage already have. Magic damage has sorceries like Comet and fire damage has incantations like Giantsflame, to name just one example for each damage type.

I'm glad pure strength and dex builds have more interesting options in ER compared to previous games and am not particularly bothered by dex taking the role of scaling lightning damage melee weapons, but for dex to also have exclusive access to a ranged lighting nuke that faith builds have no equivalent version of is just lame. It's not like the game balance would be negatively affected by giving faith builds an alternative to spamming Lightning Spear, it would just be another option for ranged lightning damage.

Great weapon for pve although over powered. I like it in pvp as invader too although good players will dodge easy. But if they do miss time it , bye bye. I pair it with cross naginata in pvp . Don't really need the special skill. I don't duel much, but probably not great in that setting, but seems about 2 builds are usuable in arena anyway. For ganks sitting around grace. Use finger severer and tell them to FO.

You don't need to defeat Godfrey's ghost. Hook right from the Grace, go into the alley between the large stairs and another building. There's a gazebo you can jump to behind a broken railing, and you can jump from that onto a thin ledge that lets you get up to the Bolt's location.

I can't fathom who in their right mind decided that lightning damage should be split between dex and faith in this game, I mean they made the top level bestial incantation have a mere 15 faith requirment and gave it a seal that scaled well with strength but didn't make the dragon cult seal scale with dex at all and the most basic of dragon cult incantations requires 15 faith with that scaling all the way up to 47, but then lighning damage on weapons and with AoWs scales off dex so to actually use a lightning weapon with lightning incantations you need 40 dex and 40 faith but to make a strength build with bestial incantations at the same level you could happily do 65 strenght and 15 faith with much better scaling on both your weapon and your incantations, they had a template there to make lightning builds great but instead chose to screw us over like they always do.

Kinda wierd that a skill this good for pve is so bad in pvp. Most of the time it just goes through them in close-range, and no one is getting hit by this at medium to long range. in a duel its basically only good for punishing slow attacks.

Ppl is fixated so much in it's weapon skill that it forgets it's one of the best spears out there regardless of it. 2nd longest reach, absurd damage, guard boost comparable to halberds, medium weight... seriously, if you only use it for the weapon skill then you're missing a lot.

I love needing to waste 8.5 pounds of my equip load and a **** ton of str and dex to be able to use the better lightning spear, which has no incant or fth variant and is stuck to a slow pokey chunk of metal.

“From is catering to fth too much!” Okay so why does holy suck and have like three spells that deal holy damage while the only other viable type is fire cus it actually gets fth scaling weapons? Lightning in this game objectively is not well designed, because you either go semi-lightning or split your stats and lose stat synergy cus dex has minimal cast speed improvement but zero damage for incants and fth has zero effect on the weapons used by the cult that worships lightning which is literally imbued with gold and comes from the elden ring itself. ****, even str got to have an actual tangible impact on spell damage via clawmark seal, yet the lightning seal, the type half of elden ring insists has some arbitrary tie to dexterity, has zero dex scaling. So does lightning have nothing to do with faith or everything? Make up your mind, holy ****.

this is more so about the character but it seems that gransax attacked the capital, mimicking placidusax's power of that particular type of bolt. maybe gransax pretended to be the dragon king while placidusax was still in stasis, waiting for his god.

This doesn't scale with Faith for lore reasons. From the Ancient Dragonbolt Pot item description: "Allows one to wield ancient drake lightning regardless of faith. The residual power of relics is a purely natural phenomenon."

I also need to get this off my chest and I guess this as good a place as any. FromSoft doesn't put gameplay first when considering balance. I know you're not allowed to say you enjoy the writing online, but to the devs these games are role-playing games and thus narrative-driven experiences. Rememeber when they added miniscule Faith scaling to the Great Club? Pretty ridiculous decision on their part. That is until you consider what I just said. It's a branch of the Erdtree that is "imbued with holy power," thus Faith should strengthen it. This was so important to them that they went out of their way to adjust it.

So in the future whenever you find a certain weapon or spell useless, or its scaling weird, remember that the devs have different priorities than what you might expect.

Some people seem to not understand what is the difference between STR and DEX. DEX is not agility, a DEX scaling just means that the weapon is more refined and needs actual dexterity to be used, whereas a STR weapon needs just raw brutal force. A quality weapon, like a greatsword, usually needs both and it fits perfectly.

Since dragons and ancient dragons are resistant to lightning, this could imply that Gransax killed his own kind. It makes sense, since Godwyn allied with some of them. Maybe he was even killing and cannibalizing his kind before the war, which could explain how he already had the bolt.
