Rotten Greataxe is a Colossal Weapon in Elden Ring. The Rotten Greataxe scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for going against large creatures and enemies.

Greataxe designed for gladiatorial combat, now festering with scarlet rot.

Used by duelists who were exiled from the colosseum.

Causes Scarlet Rot Buildup: (65)
Unlike the majority of Colossal Weapons, the Rotten Greataxe's damage scales much more with Dexterity than Strength.
When infused with Poison, it can inflict Scarlet Rot and Poison buildup simultaneously. The Ash of War: Poisonous Mist can further increase the poison buildup by buffing the weapon with poison while emitting a poisonous mist.
Sell Value: 200.
NOTE: As of Patch 1.08, Colossal Weapons poise damage has been reduced.
NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.

You would have thought it is a DEX weapon due to it innate scaling but it is more complicated:

With a Heavy Ash of War and 80 STR this weapon reaches 768 AR one Handed and 819 AR two handed with only a supposed B scaling only in STR.
With a Keen Ash of War and 30 STR (for its minimal requirement) and 80 DEX it reaches 794 AR one handed and 804 AR two handed with an E scaling in STR and a B scaling in DEX.
With a Quality Ash of War and an 80 in both STR and DEX this weapon has 861 AR one handed and 895 AR two handed.

  While using the black wetstone to apply blood removes the passive rot, blood greases work if you use a physical ash like keen. Better yet, use rot grease to push the rot proc to ridiculous levels, the highest in the game!

  Bleed infusion with poison mist ash of war gives you three statuses on a colossal weapon that already has good damage on its own. covers a lot of bases and is very fun to use. also looks very cool. highly recommend

  Don't let the scaling fool you, this performs better on a Strength build when two-handing.
  
  Two-handing at 80 Str 10 Dex Heavy Infusion: 850 AR
  Two-handing at 30 Str 80 Dex Keen Infusion: 830 AR
  
  With a Strength build you are saving 20 Attribute points.
  
  850 AR is a ton, for reference the Heavy Greatsword has 884 AR, and this weapon applies Scarlet Rot with roar buffs very quickly.

  It is usable on sl1 lol, less give it a try I say, radagon sore + starscourge + blood + braggarts roar = uninterruptable charged heavies that rot and bleed twinks in one hit

  Conclusion: Needs an incredible amount of finesse to avoid being inflicted with rot just handling the thing. That inherently lowers the STR requirement through better use of leverage.

  I prefer to put poisonous mist on it. Gives that an insane poison damage and hyperarmor that'll proc poison instantly if the hit connects too unless your opponent has really high resistances. Then you can switch to a faster weapon to keep on pressure and prevent them from curing poison. Very fun weapon and actually looks awesome if you ask me.

  at 80dex/20 keen infused twohanded has an AR of 819.

  With war cry, its by far the best way to apply scarlet rot in PvE. The 2 handed charged heavy attack has a status motion value of 300, so a single hit will apply 195 whopping rot!

  So, wait, despite the scaling displayed in-game...it's a Quality weapon? That's really strange, they should probably change the display; it's not at all accurate, and had it not been for the stuff listed here and my own testing, I'd have never fully gone through my Rotten Duelist build (I think it's illegal to use the gladiatorial theme without the axe, it just feels wrong with how many we fight that use one you know?) if I hadn't done my due diligence, as people on here have as well. I'm glad I started using wikis, it's really helped with my understanding of how games work when they're this complex.

  Unfortunately, the Scarlet Rot build up staying when infused with bleed is only true not upgraded or at upgrade levels +1 and +2. As soon as you get to and above +3, it still loses it's Scarlet Rot buildup :(

  I'm sorry, I gotta ask: what the **** is the point of this weapon? Why does it require 30 strength when it primarily scales with Dex??? Why would you EVER use this weapon for a strength build when Rotten Battlehammer is in quite literally the same area and scales better with strength and rotten staff comes shortly after??? And if you're building a Dex Rot build, why not use ANY OTHER ROT WEAPON SINCE THEY ALL SCALE WITH DEX? Antspur, Rotten Crystal Spear, Scorpion tail ALL scale with dex and don't have a ludicrous strength requirement to use. The only answer to this I can even fathom is that this is for Strength/Dex hybrids who really want to use a colossal weapon with an ash of war, but that's so incredibly niche of a use that I can't help but think of this as a waste of one of the few Scarlet Rot weapon slots in the game.

  I Double-wielded Bleed Rotten Warhammer and decided to trade it for this. It's not possible to infise with Bleed but there are alternatives:
  
  Infuse one of them with Heavy and use Bloodflame Blade
  Infuse the other one with Poison.

  Dude... I was running an Int build using night & gravity sorceries and wanted to mix a bit of melee in with my build as well. So I tried many different variations/builds of both this weapon and the Rotten Battle Hammer. This thing with the Waves of Darkness ash, Cold infusion, on my *mostly* Str+Int build absolutely tears crap up! PvE, PvP, doesn't matter! Give it a go! ;)

  So I noticed the table doesn't match up with what I'm seeing atm.
  
  At plus 18 atm with this weapon and I was just looking at its possible infusions. When I got to the blood infusion the build rate for rot jumped from 65 to 75 and its bleed output was even higher.

  So... Turns out it does in fact have Blood and Scarlett Rot when infused... It's literally just a matter of them ordering them in the wrong order in the parameters. In the actual effects, rot is listed before blood. But in the stats display, blood is listed first. Poison doesn't have this issue, but the Rotten Battle Hammer seemingly does... Just it has the effects listed in the right order so as to not be an issue. Weird how it hasn't been solved yet, since it's such a simple fix. But hey, Bleed and Rot do work together on this!

  How do you even use this thing? It's so slow I can swing at the same time as my opponent and they have enough time to get a hit in and roll away and I'm pretty sure it doesn't even have hyperarmor on the rolling attacks. The only way I managed to kill someone with it was by trading which I don't find to be very fun.

  Interesting how this weapon loses its Rot buildup with blood but Rotten Battle Hammer doesn't.

  This weapon is good but it boggles my mind on how its scaling works. You would have thought it is a DEX weapon due to it innate scaling but it is more complicated than that. Let me break it down.
  With a Heavy Ash of War and 80 STR this weapon reaches 768 AR one Handed and 819 AR two handed with only a supposed B scaling only in STR.
  With a Keen Ash of War and 30 STR (for its minimal requirement) and 80 DEX it reaches 794 AR one handed and 804 AR two handed with an E scaling in STR and a B scaling in DEX.
  And now for its best possible outcome. With a Quality Ash of War and an 80 in both STR and DEX this weapon has 861 AR one handed and 895 AR two handed.
  Now put these numbers down and you get these results and considering its hefty Rot build up as well,
  For PvP range levels (up to RL 150) this is an STR weapon if you want to pump up your other stats so you can put on some heavy armor as well or a DEX weapon if you do not care about armor much and you just want to pump everything purely into DEX because you still need 30 STR for its minimal requirement if you want to use it one handed. It is equally good in both regards despite its innate scaling.
  If you don't care about PVP and go outside the RL 150 range then this is a purely Quality weapon with a hefty rot build up as well.
  tl;dr this weapon is underrated for any purely physical build. Use it.

  honestly wish this was a greataxe and not a collosal weapon so it could have blade dancer, but fun weapon nonetheless.

  Tested on the giant behind the secluded cell grace, at 54 strength, 2 handed, a light attack does 948 versus 979 for a gutsword. It's a B scaling but it's must be close to A. Keeping in mind that this build Scarlet Rot, I think it's pretty good, at least for PVE. And it looks way better!

  I could give a rats behind about scaling for this weapon tbh. It looks badass. I love the duelists. Cool designs and fighting style. Just wish we had the ball and chain included in the moveset.

  Love how these high end str weapons turn to Dex scaling when you infuse with Blood, Poison or Cold. Same thing on the Duelist Greataxe.

  Compared to the Duelist Greataxe version, is the higher base damage of the Duelist more useful than the scarlet rot status effect? Does anyone see it proc scarlet rot on enemies that aren't already dead in a few hits? Not sure which of these two to focus on. Scarlet rot status seems good but I haven't had it be a factor so far.

  The only way I’m able to apply scarlet rot status is to use Scarlet Aeonia before swinging this.

  Don’t see people talking much about this. Scaling seems weird, leaning more towards Dex, despite requiring 30 strength to only 10 dex to wield. Heavy has B scaling on high base damage tho so that helps strength builds.
  
  The interesting thing to me is that it has a relatively rare passive status, but can be buffed with spells/greases and can be infused with different WAs. I was running the sacred overheard slam on a heavy infusion so I could also buff with lightning blade, giving me access to holy & lightning damage on top of high physical damage in addition the the rot. Bleed doesn’t currently stack with the rot, but frost does in a cold infusion. Fun weapon to play around with.

  Noticed From Software goofed and made it so that if you spec the Rotten Great Axe to Blood it drops the scarlet rot. Oddly enough the Rotten Battle Hammer can be changed to Blood Rotten Battle Hammer with no issue. I really hope they fix this in up coming patches.

  So I loved the look of this weapon, and wanted to make it work even with the wonky stats..
  Fun I've had with it so far..
  - Cold infused with Barbaric Roar to make the R2 a combo that normally causes frostbite in one go.
  - Quality or Keen infused with thunderbolt for "I'm a caster surprise" - Keen works best for pure thunderbolt spam, Quality trades a little bolt damage for much more melee.

  Works well with poison and the talisman that buffs when poison/rot is proc’d. Proc’s poison in 1 or 2 hits. Decent option for a dex/arcane build if you can manage the 30 STR.

  There seems to be a bug with this when you apply a blood affinity to the weapon, it causes it to apply 0 scarlet rot buildup. Applying poison to the weapon keeps its scarlet rot buildup.

  This axe is a mystery to me. Despite only requiring 10 Dex by default it benefits more from Dex than Str, the scaling is average at best, and it applies Rot but since the weapon takes around a year to actually swing the only way you'll apply it is against a tanky boss. Wild Swings would help build it quicker but there's so many better ways to apply Rot if that's your aim.
  
  It has high base damage so, best use would be a low level (30-ish) build but getting to Consecrated Snowfield without being one shot by over half the enemies in the game seems more like a pipe dream.

  Love the look of this axe. Probably gonna put Barbaric Roar on it to increase my attack speed, and put either poison or frost on it. Scaling is kind of lame but if I two hand it, 20 strength ain't that bad.

  Don’t let the mediocre strength scaling scare you off trying this thing out. The heavy infusion has abnormally high base damage while also fixing the scaling for strength builds making this a way better strength weapon than what its goofy scaling initially suggests.

  Don't be fooled by the scarlet rot, it's actually pretty poop overall. Having scarlet rot build-up on a slow swinging weapon is quite pointless. It has high raw attack, that's about it. If you must have a scarlet rot 2hander, get the hammer version, which isn't a colossal weapon and swings significantly quicker.

  Outside of damage, this weapon is terrible. Slow hitting weapons like this need higher Scarlet Rot build-up otherwise what's the point of putting it there in the first place. When you swing this, it's like swinging a small moon before the hit actually connects and with a (65) Scarlet Rot build-up, outside of PvE you will rarely see that proc.

  When you try to make a colossal weapon for dex builds with a decent dex scaling, but you make literally every other aspect of the weapon so counter-intuitive towards typical dex builds that no one except strength bros use it anyway.

  Man i made it with Sacred Blade Ash of War. Once i cast Sacred Blade it infuses it with more Holy. Does 929 AR with 62 Faith. If i use Golden Vow on top of Sacred Blade i get over 1000 AR. Things pretty beast. This is at +24.

  Quality Rotten Greataxe - STR 50 / DEX 50 - AR Two-handed 778 DMG
  Keen Rotten Greataxe - STR 30 / DEX 80 - AR Two-handed 804 DMG
  Heavy Rotten Greataxe - STR 80 / DEX 10 - AR Two-handed 818 DMG
  Occult Rotten Greataxe - STR 30 / DEX 20 / ARC 80 - AR Two-handed 762 DMG (scarlet rot dont changed)
  
  CONCLUSION:
  
  Heavy infusion got MORE AR for less stat investment, that results in a good choice for PvP metalevel. Unfortunatelly Heavy Rotten Greataxe deal less damage than Heavy Duelist Greataxe due balancing (STR80/DEX10 - 855 Damage).
  
  Heavy Rotten Greataxe can be used on scarlet rot STR build based, but I dont know how do this effectivelly on SL 120.
