Rotten Staff is a Colossal Weapon in Elden Ring. The Rotten Staff scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for those who want a Strength/Dexterity hybrid melee build.
Ceremonial staff depicting the Erdtree in its historic radiance. It festers with scarlet rot.
Wielded by the avatars who protect the Minor Erdtrees.
Where to Find Rotten Staff in Elden Ring
The Rotten Staff weapon can be found at the following location:
- Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree: Dropped by the Putrid Avatar patrolling the ring walkway in the east. To reach this walkway, head out of the Prayer Room Site of Grace and jump onto the second buttress (concrete beam) connecting to a tower. Descend the tower and use the ledges on the bottom to reach the ring walkway. [Elden Ring Map here] Video Location
- Additional drop, at patch 1.05 the other Putrid Avatar in Elphael (near the Inner Walls Site of Grace) can drop the weapon.

I believe both putrid avatars in Elphael have a chance of randomly dropping this, on top of the first one always dropping it. The one that normally has this as a guaranteed drop just gave me two of them, instead of the usual one.
- Anonymous
If you're optimizing for butt slam damage, use the other staff.
I've seen this drop randomly as a cooperator on two separate occasions.
- Anonymous
Honestly strange, staff of the avatar has B tier faith scaling and A tier strength scaling, this weapon has rot but just doesnt get the same numbers as staff of the avatar in the end, should have A tier str aswell with maybe C tier faith scling?
- Anonymous
Kind of fun offhand w the antspur, you can surpise ppl with it if youre patient enough. Not a stellar weapon generally speaking.
- Anonymous
pretty bad in terms of actual status application, should be increased imo
- Anonymous
dropped one and then a second item on the ground - did not expect two of these let alone one
- Anonymous
The "depicts the Erdtree in its historic radiance" line in the description is probably an oversight, since this weapon is clearly styled after the Haligtree.
- Anonymous
Yes, it is true that Elphael's second Putrid Avatar can drop a second Rotten Staff. 8% chance to drop, but only From Software can think of putting a drop percentage on an enemy that doesn't respawn after killing it the first time.
- Anonymous
Patch 1.07 got 3 of them. 1 from Avatar near Ephael Inner Wall site of grace as a regular drop. 2 from Avatar patrolling the bridge, 1 as guaranteed drop (instant pickup to your inventory) and 1 as regular drop.
- Anonymous
I assume it's a bug but I just got 2 of these from killing the avatar patrolling the bridge.
- Anonymous
Literally useless. Loses trades to katana r1s at 60 str. Even if it did double damage it will still take 6-7 HTK against other tanks...
- Anonymous
If you could buff it, or infuse it, it may have been handy in pvp, for some creative, off meta builds. But the r1s are all free jump attacks/L2 trades and the L2 is the biggest free jump attack in the game... and if rotten duelist hammer is anything to go by, you’ll never score the rot anyways.

Got a second one as a drop (pickup-able item) from the putrid avatar that guaranteed gives one when it dies (not as a pickup-drop). Was on patch 1.06 at the time
- Anonymous
I can confirm the staff drops from the Crystallian near the Inner Walls grace.
- Anonymous
You'd think that the rotten version of the erdtree staff would get the rotten version of the erdtree slam...
- Anonymous
Outside the prayer room I killed the Erdtree and died at the same time. Rotten staff popped up as reward but didn’t appear in my inventory. Killed the 2nd one too by the gate and still no staff.
- Anonymous
Top tier weapon during randomizers. The slam makes quick work of all the enemy groups randomized into the average DS2 ambush.
I just had two of these drop at the same time from the putrid avatar. I was sniping him from above and it awarded me one upon kill, but he also "dropped" an item. So I made my way down to where he died, and it was another one of these. Current discovery is 147

Interesting to note that unlike the other rotten weapons, which are just the base weapon with rot, this is a distinct design from the Staff of the Avatar. Rather than the Erdtree styling, it has the marble Celtic knot motif of the Haligtree architecture.
- Anonymous
Weird, I just got 1 right at killing the avatar - and it dropped a second one.
The boss reset in between, probably because I used an obstacle to avoid the 50x groundslam spam.
- Anonymous
It gave me the Rotten Staff as a reward kill and also dropped the staff on the ground. What the hell
- Anonymous
it's pretty weird that the erdtree avatar, thing that you have to kill to get this weapon, has more HP than most bosses in the game and can literally one shot you with 60 vigor and is just placed as a normal enemy
- Anonymous
Got two one from drop from him one for defeating him kinda neat ngl NG

- Anonymous
does this weapons erdtree slam have the normal golden land one or is it the scarlet rot one?
- Anonymous
I like how you land on your butt using the Erdtree Slam. Very intimidating.
- Anonymous
Just got this staff garunteed drop from haligtree, but it also dropped it normally.
For Faith builds : from the Prayer Room site of grace, drop down on the roof to the right, from there you can see the Erdtree Avatar roaming. Wait for the Avatar to be as close to the roof as possible, then cast Black Flame on it, it will do significant damage. When the Avatar starts casting in your direction, just move a bit back and you won't get hit.

Not a big deal but I assume it's another oversight that guard boost goes from 43 down to 40 when upgrading to +10? It's probably supposed to end up at 44.

I got one from helping my friend the the Putrid Avatar in his world. So now i have three lol.
- Anonymous
Power stancing this proc scarlet rot on 2 hits lol, also super high stagger and dmg output
I also got 2 of these from killing it, one from actually killing it and getting the pop up, and a physical drop on the ground.
this thing just appeared in my inventory while I was bumming around the castle, didn't go down to the ring or anything, so the avatar can kill itself somehow.

Shame this is ain’t a Faith Str weapon like the regular form. The Rotten Crystal weapons still retain their int scaling, and Str still gets the rotten Greataxe colossal.
Signed, a jealous Paladin who wants a rot weapon.
- Anonymous
I killed the Erdtree Avatar and got rewarded one Rotten Staff for the actual kill count... But it also dropped an item on the ground which was another Rotten Staff... Unsure if this is related to having a high Arcane with item discovery or if it's a bug based on something else. Eitherway I have two for some reason.
- Anonymous
Yet another soul who got two drops of the lone avatar patrolling on the wall in Haligtree.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Can also drop (Not sure if it's 100%) from the 2nd Erdtree Avatar outside the gate of the Inner Wall at the Haligtree.
I got 1 from each of them.
the weapon skill for the few colossal weapons that use it: "Erdtree Slam," is now fixed and does a really nice amount of damage (staff of the avatar, rotten staff).
- Anonymous
The weapon art for Erd tree slam is bugged in this current patch, so both avatar staves have a useless weapon art.
- Anonymous
I killed both putrid avatars in haligtree but only got one staff, one of them just gave me a rune and that's it, they don't respawn anymore
- Anonymous
Weapon skill: erdtree slam deals very low damage on my STR build....

There seems to be a guaranteed drop from the Avatar on the bridge below the Prayer Room grace. I got two from this Avatar, one gave me the Unique item drop pop up.
- Anonymous
Miquella's Haligtree Prayer Room Grace Outisde on the left is an Minor Erd Tree on a bridge drops when killed, can be cheesed if you drop 1 floor and use range attacks.
- Anonymous
Dropped by erdtree avatar just outside Elphael inner wall grace. Possibly random loot.
- Anonymous
Anyone know where to get this? Can't find anything about it online
- Anonymous
What bothers me is that putrid avatars *don't use Erdtree Slam* - when they ground pound in combat it isn't holy damage, instead a bunch of corrosive scarlet diarrhea sprays out from underneath them.
However, I can see why they didn't make that its Ash of War.
