Royal Greatsword is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring; originally wielded by Blaidd the Half-Wolf. The Royal Greatsword scales primarily with Strength and Intelligence, with a minor scaling in Dexterity, granting it build flexibility and overall good damage output.
Greatsword decorated in royal Carian Style. Favored weapon of Blaidd the Half-Wolf.
In defiance of the fate he was born to, Blaidd swore to serve no master but Ranni. As proof. the sword was imbued with a cold magic at the moment oath was sworn.

Elden Ring Royal Greatsword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Wolf´s Assault
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables
- Royal Greatsword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- Its Weapon Skill is deceptively powerful (albeit tricky to get the most out of), benefiting from 2 hits: the actual sword plunge and the ensuing explosion, assuming players can time its excessively long animation.
- The frost buildup is applied on weapon hit, as well as explosion.
- The weapon hit deals 60 frost buildup, the explosion deals 100.
- Sell Value: 500
- At 55 Str and 50 Int this sword nets you over 900 AR one-handed. It competes well with Greatsword if you make good use of the weapon art.
- Note: As of Patch 1.08, the Speed of Crouching and Rolling Attack has been slightly increased.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the speed of guard counters for this weapon has increased

I remember shredding in PVP with this weapon in earlier patches. The special attack ALONE could 1-shot players. Never really used it in PVE but in PVP, it shredded. Good times.

I'm downright addicted to this weapon in both PvE and PvP. I don't know whether it's truly "the best" and frankly don't care, it's just highly satisfying to tank through Corpse Piler, Transient Moonlight, Waterfowl Dance, etc. for an almost guaranteed instant kill. You can even use it to leap clean over a numbet of attacks, from Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker to Flaming Strike (not to mention a bunch of the bosses' attacks). I've experimented with plenty of other weapons and builds, but I always come back to this one for how powerful but fair it feels.
My suggestion is to try and keep below the light equip threshold so you can outdistance attacks like Spinning Slash, then instantly leap back in with Wolf's Assault. Alexander's Jar Shard is obviously very helpful, and I don't mind taking a little extra damage with Magic Scorpion Charm. As for the Mixed Physick, I like to use Crimsonwhorl for the brief elemental absorption (this is especially funny against Bloodboon Ritual ambushes) and Magic-Shrouding for one last magic boost.
I feel like most players aren't used to seeing it, so they get overconfident with skill spam and don't anticipate the relatiation. It's got its weaknesses, of course, but there are workarounds. Hell, I don't even care that there's no innate frost, lol. It's already a solid choice for dealing with the meta—you just have to be clever in how you use it, and to not spam Wolf's Assault expecting to hit someone who isn't locked in another animation.

This must passively inflict frostbite. Yeah everyone has said it and everyone knows it but I don’t care fromsoft must do it
- Anonymous
As of writing this comment this page says "The weapon hit deals 60 frost buildup, the explosion deals 100." while the ash of war says "Frost build up is 100 on the weapon strike and 60 on the explosion."
Which of these two is correct?
- Anonymous
This weapon would go from good to great if it behaved like a weapon that has cold infusion. It literally says in it's weapon description that it was imbued with cold magic, but only activates when using ash of war? Most of the time you kill the enemy before you can even proc the status effect. Don't know how they dropped the ball on this weapon?
For those talking about how amazing the AR is, keep in mind that a magic infused greatsword gets roughly the same AR unless you have very high levels of str + dex + int...which means going above level 200 in NG+. And even then, the AR difference is minor, only about 60 AR even with 60 str/dex/int.
It doesnt help that this has a shorter range than other colossal swords like the greatsword.
The real issue is how lackluster the weapon art is. Low damage, very low poise damage (even spinning slash does more poise damage!) and a very lengthy animation means you will get slapped while stuck in the animation. It doesnt even do high frostbite buildup.
If you want to do an INT build, use dark moon greatsword instead, that has an actually good weapon art.

30 STR, 30 DEX, 60 INT = 910 AR one handed, 944 2H.... needless to say, this thing is a ****ing monster.
- Anonymous
Sword for tryhard scrub-casuls. PKCS is better because it requires actual pure skill to be good-PKCS Pope
This mf is BROKEN if you are using a snow witch build in Convergene.
Isn't bad at all, but that requirements are really annoying to use him.
- Anonymous
Pretty stat hungry sword. Really shines around level 175 and up, and if it had any passive frost build I'd consider using at lower levels. A cold infused GUGS is better around meta imo.

My take to buff the weapon.
Keep the buffs, but after the assault is triggered, you gan a 40 magic dmg and 40 frostbite for 20s. Your movement speed increases, and at the expense of 2h stamina use, your 1h combo similes blaidd's way of combat. an Actual assault skill

If they added passive frost bite I would exclusively use this

This is the weapin for a Slave Knight Gael cosplay build. Not because fo the look but the AoW matches the best. Also, the triple rings of light require int anyways and the pully crossbow requires 16 dex, so two more will fit easily. Another plus is that the sword and the blue lightnings both proc frost, so you have a ranged and a melee option. I would recomend RL 168 tho.
- Anonymous
Really wanted to like this weapon but it's a real dud imo. You have the clunky/awkward colossal sword moves and a long AoW weapon animation that is impossible to use in most battles.

Finally, a good looking UGS, I am not a fan of swords in general, especially UGS, but I cannot bypass this. It looks amazing, unique ash of war, great damage, it's more happiness than I felt with the cathedral knight ugs in DS3.
- Anonymous
My favorite weapon for NG+7 and above. I'm at 60 Str, 30 Dex, 60 Int, and the AR can already get around 1300 with only magic scorpion talisman and magic-shrouding cracked tear buffs. The weapon art is also very good to deal with multiple small annoying enemies and to dodge certain ground attack moves with style. But most importantly, it looks perfect with my beast champion armor.
Love this Greatsword, really versatile and has a poke like Zwei, the ash of war is super fast like lions claw that works really well near and mid-range. The heavy attack can break poise easily, I wish the ash of war could do that like the moonlight.
- Anonymous
Real shame that this doesn't have passive frost would love it even more if it did
- Anonymous
honestly if its dive down had a 1.5 times range it could do well with roll catches after a crouch poke.

I pretty much strictly run a Blaidd cosplay build and this sword is genuinely a lot of fun, even if quite simple. The split damage may seem offputting, but the fact that it deals mostly magic means it can chunk through shields ruthlessly fast. Equipping Magic Scorpion Charm greatly benefits this weapon, as does Alexander's Jar Shard, making Wolf's Assault a near-guaranteed instakill on many enemies and other players alike, so long as you know how to use it: 1) first option is as a stealth attack, sneaking around an opponent while they're focused on another player and activating the jump from behind their camera range, which is unusually effective and morbidly hilarious; 2) try using it as a counterattack against attacks with long windups/cooldowns, such as Waterfowl Dance (used by a player, obviously) or any of the dragon breath attacks. The hyper armor will likely allow you to land both the stab and the blast, while knocking the opponent out of many attacks. It may take some trial and error to learn what you can and cannot counter safely. For nonhuman/boss enemies, it can be especially entertaining to flip over huge sweeping attacks or shockwaves, such as Golden Slam, the Godskin Nobles' belly flop, Godfrey's phase change AOE, etc.
Granted, it's one major weakness is magic defense. It becomes virtually useless against anyone that casts Magic Fortification or enemies with naturally high magic defense, such as Rennala. Thankfully, these enemies are few and far between, so it's not too much of a problem, especially if you just carry any other weapon without magic as its primary offense.
Since it isn't a terribly popular weapon in PvP, I do feel it benefits from the element of surprise. Don't abuse Wolf's Assault too heavily, and eventually other players will slip up. It's also not unwise to mix Magic-Shrouding and Crimsonwhorl in your physick flask to amplify magic attack and temporarily absorb nonphysical attacks. This is how I tend to deal with Bloodboon Ritual spammers, lol. Pop physick, ignore the red aura of doom, laugh as I blast them into next millennium in two hits while they're stuck in their silly animation.

The second part of the aow needs a bigger aoe and a lingering hit box
- Anonymous
For everyone complaining about not landing wolfs’ assault, you’re doing it wrong.
Don’t stand off at maximum distance and try to land it directly; instead wait for them to try a charged attack or long cast spell and pop it right next to them. The first part of the jump has hit stun, and if they’re hit stunned by it, it will land and stagger them for the explosion.
Think of it as a three part weapon art instead of two. The first jumping up part is like a kick.

in the inventory screen, this looks like one of the brigland twin daggers from ds3
- Anonymous
Fun fact: the startup of the weapon gets your character to prone. If timed right, you can dodge spells and certain weapon swings like loretta's upper slash or radagon's holy spear. After that you jump forward, but high enough to avoid crucible knight stomps or godfrey's stomp.

I wish this was a Greatsword so I could power stance with dark moon Greatsword and be the ultimate buff smart dude

Just started using this in a build I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! *tears of joy*

If you kill Blaidd in mistwood he doesn’t drop anything right?
- Anonymous
The aow needs better tracking and/or a bigger hitbox. Its a solid weapon but I’ve played several hours of this in pvp and have only hit it once. the weapon itself also deserves frostbite build up, it just makes sense. Pretty weapon, but has room for improvement.
- Anonymous
wtf is with the demanding stats in this game? 18 dex for a weapon that doesn't scale with dex?
- Anonymous
One of the best weapons of you plan on going deep into NG+. Once you start building around it, this thing can fetch you over 1k AR easily. Since it does so much magic damage it’s easily buffed by stuff like Magic Shrouding Cracked Tear. It’s basically Maliketh’s Black Blade, but it does magic damage and looks cooler.
- Anonymous
Considering this thing does absurd amounts of magic damage over physical, it would make sense if it had passive frostbite buildup.
- Anonymous
Any tips how to land the skill in pvp? It doesnt have much forward momentum to rollcatch or end your combo with and its slow enough for people to hit you and back away while you're in the middle of the animation
- Anonymous
Ranni’s Dark Moon followed by this sword’s skill is a sweet combo
- Anonymous
This weapon is a lot of fun but MAN the weapon art needs some more frostbite buildup. It’s basically nonexistent. Or just put frost buildup inherently on the weapon.
- Anonymous
Great weapon, but would really benefit from passive frost build-up on hits.
- Anonymous
I noticed some carvings on the blade, is that something you can actually decipher or is it just gibberish?

Collosal aren't good for duels. But in invasions don't sleep on this ash/wep... Saying it's bad in PvP... Maybe in your controlled duel environment yes it sucks... But different things work and dont work between the 2 styles. Invasions and PvE this thing is fun and yields results in many scenerios
This deserves a buff after 1.07, it is outclassed by any generic colossal greatsword with the Chilling Mist weapon art.
Example comparison:
GUGS +25 (54 Str, 12 Dex, Chilling Mist, Heavy Affinity, Twohanded):
- Best range out of all colossal swords
- Low stat requirement
- 817 AR, purely physical (only has to go through 1 flat damage mitigation)
- Normal attacks have frostbite buildup (because of the weapon art)
- Weapon art is fast, cheap, hits hard and instantly applies frostbite to pretty much anything that isn't immune
Royal Greatsword (54 Str, 18 Dex, 50 Int, Twohanded):
- Good range, but not the best
- Very high stat requirement
- 966 AR, physical and magic (has to go through 2 flat damage mitigations, so realistically it only hits around 10% harder than the GUGS instead of 18% harder)
- Normal attacks have no frostbite buildup
- Weapon art is very slow and hard to cleanly land against bosses, has atrocious frostbite buildup, but the damage is extremely high if you do land both hits
The Royal Greatsword only has a single advantage, which is the higher AR, but it comes at the cost of massively higher stat investment, and realistically the GUGS still hits harder, since it has a very easy time to apply the frostbite debuff, whereas with the Royal Greatsword it is close to impossible to apply it.

Easily one of the the better-looking colossal swords, and with a unique weapon art to boot. If only I ever invested in both strength and intelligence on the same character...

This weapon completely wrecks Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader.

I use this beauty with 36 STR and 69 INT and, hell, it is more than capable getting the job done. Really didn´t expect that.
- Anonymous
There's writing on the blade if you look down the center of it. Does anyone know what it means?
- Anonymous
the 2 part weapons art is nice the dmg is good but its way to slow. for trash mobs i favor the Blasphemous blade
- Anonymous
I just devastated Malenia with this weapon art. It completely trivialises her first phase.
- Anonymous
Not a fan colossal swords but this thing was my best friend farming for haligtree knight set in Elphael. I got so pissed off fighting those shield poking healing as oles, pug this weapon on and SMASHED them like they were nothing

I was using the Carion Knight Sword all game and thought nothing would feel as good as a tried and true straight sword on my Int heavy build. Then I found this and it just offers so much to complement the build. Strength was my second offensive stat to pump (good for CKS as well), and the weapons art on this is just stellar to go with classic Colossal sword reach, superior damage. The fact that the sword has my favorite aesthetic of any huge weapon to date is just icing on the cake. Would 100% recommend this sword, even for those of you who like fast weapons. Also, human sized enemies get LAUNCHED into the air with the heavy attack on Torrent, and let me tell you that does NOT get old.
- Anonymous
Why do I feel like this WA should be accompanied by welcome to the space jam. Come on and SLAM
- Anonymous
Currently doing a full blaidd playthrough, fought mohg recently. This thing is beastly, with about 50/50 str/int, fully upgraded and mimic tear, I killed him before he could even start his blood ritual. Only damage boosting I had was magic tear and ritual sword talisman. Would have been worth a entire build if it was available sooner.
- Anonymous
Finally, a weapon to use against the two fingers what what they did to blaidd.

I think this has the highest base damage out of any weapon! (or Malikeths sword)

I’m all for Style over Substance. I can’t enjoy things as well if I don’t look cool doing it.

With magic scorpion charm and the jar shard this absolutely carried me through the tougher parts of NG+ at level 120 with int build. I ended up not using my wand anymore.
For duels it's meh, but it absolutely keeps people well away. In ganks it's a 1 hitter.
Great moveset, the rolling R1 poke is very good in duels, just not a good ash of war for 1v1.
Absolutely wrecks mobs, the knockback was especially useful in haligtree, at 120 the trash mobs hit like tanks, you can't ever let them hit you, the stun is everything.
- Anonymous
Over 900 AR at base str, dex and 60 int. Deals impressive damage in pve and pvp but is lacklustre in co op because enemy defense scaling really slams the split damage hard.
Just having fun with this.
Yeah, there are a few other weapons that deal a lot of more damage - but look at this thing, it looks stunning and ist pure fun and wolfs assault damage is great as well.

At 55 Str and 50 Int this sword nets you over 900 AR one-handed. It competes well with Greatsword if you make good use of the weapon art.

If this weapon had frostbite buildup on the hits and not just the WA it would be unbeatable.
I use this only cuz of fashion. One of the best looking weapons in the game
- Anonymous
Ah the thinking mans UGS, not only it's an excellent weapon but it's also not the guts sword so in duels the the opponent knows that you're not a sore loser poke spammer.
It's weapon art has great tracking, excellent against gankers
- Anonymous
on 99 all stats it has 1074 dmg on +10
It is second biggest dmg without any buffs or dancing with tambourine
- Anonymous
Fully upgraded and at level 713 this is the best weapon in the game by raw damage output (I think), but in terms of practical applications it kinda sucks
- Anonymous
PvE wise this is one of if not the most versatile and competent weapons overall. PvP can be a bit more challenging with latency and i-frames that people have perfected at times to avoid the weapon art. But if a group is pushing on you this WA mops the floor with them. 50str/40dex and 75 int makes this weapon art do 2K plus to certain bosses and one shots most players not going full tank. One of my favorite weapons.
- Anonymous
I tried to like it. But when you can just grab a moonveil and deal twice the damage, twice as fast is there any point?
- Anonymous
The weapon art on this was the solution to Alecto for me. Just pin her against the rocks, or the edge of the cliff since she can't fall off, and you can keep her on her tushie until it's over.
- Anonymous
an incredibly useful thing to keep in mind is the special attack does great damage sure but will knock over humanoid enemies, including Malenia in both phase 1 & 2. i ran my head against the wall trying to beat her as a Mage type until i just hammered the weapon art and demolished her with stun lock.
- Anonymous
Might as well use gut's greatsword with cold infused instead, it sucks that royal greatsword doesn't have cold buildup, that should be patched
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Probably a mid tier gank spank weapon. Terrible for duels, the only people getting hit by this AoW are ppl who haven't seen it before. It's a 1 trick pony, damage overall is bad. Tracking on the skill is Terrible and it's slow as hell still even after 1.04. Int scaling should be higher to counter the split damage type, truly a wasted opportunity. Imo don't bother for pvp until it sees a real buff. Also, why doesn't this buildup frost? Weapon design is cool as **** tho, but don't shelf your greatsword.
- Anonymous
Very powerful weapon. I have just done a brand new character specifically to get this. Took 10 hours but was totally worth it.
Having said that it is slow (as you'd expect for a colossal weapon) so fast/agile bosses may be a challenge just to get your hits in and not waste FP hitting thin air. Fire Giant to tricky too because you need to be agile for that fight.
- Anonymous
This thing loses 4 guard boost when you upgrade it to +10 because god hates me.
- Anonymous
I’ve been trying out other weapon classes (spears, halberds, etc.) but I always find myself coming back to this sword. Something about it and wolfs assault is no joke.
Colossal gang strong
The Lore, the Characters & Quest involved, the obvious clear description about "Imbued with a Cold Magic" and last but not least the Low scaling => all points toward Cold Affinty and Frostbite Buildup !
This weapon should be buffed to have Frost buildup on hit, for its entire moveset.
Additionally, I believe the INT , STR and (maybe) DEX Scaling should be Buffed a bit :
B C B or A C B or A D A makes more sense thematically and mechanically!
Better Scaling with Frost Proc will make it inline Frost Infusion and will make it very unique Cold Colossal Sword !
Alternatively, they can have a Cold Buff that activates after you use the Weapon Art.

A little trick I noticed..
The first somersault part of the WA, which is practically instant, generally does enough poise damage to interrupt enemy moves/casts, even though it doesn’t do DAMAGE damage.
But if you time it out, it’s downright abusive. Also, there’s a good chunk of time to manually aim where the sword is going to stab down.
- Anonymous
My favourite part of this weapon's art is that when you're flipping in the air, you can push back and interrupt some enemies if you get in their face (used on Banished Knights in Farum Azula as reference so far)

Despite the description, as well as the frosty WA animation… this weapon DOES NOT DEAL FROST DAMAGE. If it actually dealt frost damage you would here the co-op community complaining about it much more. It doesn’t need the frost tbh, this is probably the best (non-bleed) gank spanking weapon in the game. Players tend to get super-aggressive when they have summons… introduce them to our Lord and Savior Artorious
