Royal Greatsword is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring; originally wielded by Blaidd the Half-Wolf. The Royal Greatsword scales primarily with Strength and Intelligence, with a minor scaling in Dexterity, granting it build flexibility and overall good damage output.
Greatsword decorated in royal Carian Style. Favored weapon of Blaidd the Half-Wolf.
In defiance of the fate he was born to, Blaidd swore to serve no master but Ranni. As proof. the sword was imbued with a cold magic at the moment oath was sworn.

Elden Ring Royal Greatsword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Wolf´s Assault
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables
- Royal Greatsword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- Its Weapon Skill is deceptively powerful (albeit tricky to get the most out of), benefiting from 2 hits: the actual sword plunge and the ensuing explosion, assuming players can time its excessively long animation.
- Sell Value:
500
- At 55 Str and 50 Int this sword nets you over 900 AR one-handed. It competes well with Greatsword if you make good use of the weapon art.
- Note: As of Patch 1.08, the Speed of Crouching and Rolling Attack has been slightly increased.

Great weapon, but would really benefit from passive frost build-up on hits.

I noticed some carvings on the blade, is that something you can actually decipher or is it just gibberish?

Collosal aren't good for duels. But in invasions don't sleep on this ash/wep... Saying it's bad in PvP... Maybe in your controlled duel environment yes it sucks... But different things work and dont work between the 2 styles. Invasions and PvE this thing is fun and yields results in many scenerios
This deserves a buff after 1.07, it is outclassed by any generic colossal greatsword with the Chilling Mist weapon art.
Example comparison:
GUGS +25 (54 Str, 12 Dex, Chilling Mist, Heavy Affinity, Twohanded):
- Best range out of all colossal swords
- Low stat requirement
- 817 AR, purely physical (only has to go through 1 flat damage mitigation)
- Normal attacks have frostbite buildup (because of the weapon art)
- Weapon art is fast, cheap, hits hard and instantly applies frostbite to pretty much anything that isn't immune
Royal Greatsword (54 Str, 18 Dex, 50 Int, Twohanded):
- Good range, but not the best
- Very high stat requirement
- 966 AR, physical and magic (has to go through 2 flat damage mitigations, so realistically it only hits around 10% harder than the GUGS instead of 18% harder)
- Normal attacks have no frostbite buildup
- Weapon art is very slow and hard to cleanly land against bosses, has atrocious frostbite buildup, but the damage is extremely high if you do land both hits
The Royal Greatsword only has a single advantage, which is the higher AR, but it comes at the cost of massively higher stat investment, and realistically the GUGS still hits harder, since it has a very easy time to apply the frostbite debuff, whereas with the Royal Greatsword it is close to impossible to apply it.

Easily one of the the better-looking colossal swords, and with a unique weapon art to boot. If only I ever invested in both strength and intelligence on the same character...

This weapon completely wrecks Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader.

I use this beauty with 36 STR and 69 INT and, hell, it is more than capable getting the job done. Really didn´t expect that.

There's writing on the blade if you look down the center of it. Does anyone know what it means?
- Anonymous
the 2 part weapons art is nice the dmg is good but its way to slow. for trash mobs i favor the Blasphemous blade
- Anonymous
I just devastated Malenia with this weapon art. It completely trivialises her first phase.

Not a fan colossal swords but this thing was my best friend farming for haligtree knight set in Elphael. I got so pissed off fighting those shield poking healing as oles, pug this weapon on and SMASHED them like they were nothing

I was using the Carion Knight Sword all game and thought nothing would feel as good as a tried and true straight sword on my Int heavy build. Then I found this and it just offers so much to complement the build. Strength was my second offensive stat to pump (good for CKS as well), and the weapons art on this is just stellar to go with classic Colossal sword reach, superior damage. The fact that the sword has my favorite aesthetic of any huge weapon to date is just icing on the cake. Would 100% recommend this sword, even for those of you who like fast weapons. Also, human sized enemies get LAUNCHED into the air with the heavy attack on Torrent, and let me tell you that does NOT get old.

Why do I feel like this WA should be accompanied by welcome to the space jam. Come on and SLAM

Currently doing a full blaidd playthrough, fought mohg recently. This thing is beastly, with about 50/50 str/int, fully upgraded and mimic tear, I killed him before he could even start his blood ritual. Only damage boosting I had was magic tear and ritual sword talisman. Would have been worth a entire build if it was available sooner.

Finally, a weapon to use against the two fingers what what they did to blaidd.

I think this has the highest base damage out of any weapon! (or Malikeths sword)

I’m all for Style over Substance. I can’t enjoy things as well if I don’t look cool doing it.

With magic scorpion charm and the jar shard this absolutely carried me through the tougher parts of NG+ at level 120 with int build. I ended up not using my wand anymore.
For duels it's meh, but it absolutely keeps people well away. In ganks it's a 1 hitter.
Great moveset, the rolling R1 poke is very good in duels, just not a good ash of war for 1v1.
Absolutely wrecks mobs, the knockback was especially useful in haligtree, at 120 the trash mobs hit like tanks, you can't ever let them hit you, the stun is everything.

Over 900 AR at base str, dex and 60 int. Deals impressive damage in pve and pvp but is lacklustre in co op because enemy defense scaling really slams the split damage hard.
Just having fun with this.
Yeah, there are a few other weapons that deal a lot of more damage - but look at this thing, it looks stunning and ist pure fun and wolfs assault damage is great as well.

If this weapon had frostbite buildup on the hits and not just the WA it would be unbeatable.
I use this only cuz of fashion. One of the best looking weapons in the game
- Anonymous
Ah the thinking mans UGS, not only it's an excellent weapon but it's also not the guts sword so in duels the the opponent knows that you're not a sore loser poke spammer.
It's weapon art has great tracking, excellent against gankers
- Anonymous
on 99 all stats it has 1074 dmg on +10
It is second biggest dmg without any buffs or dancing with tambourine
- Anonymous
Fully upgraded and at level 713 this is the best weapon in the game by raw damage output (I think), but in terms of practical applications it kinda sucks
- Anonymous
PvE wise this is one of if not the most versatile and competent weapons overall. PvP can be a bit more challenging with latency and i-frames that people have perfected at times to avoid the weapon art. But if a group is pushing on you this WA mops the floor with them. 50str/40dex and 75 int makes this weapon art do 2K plus to certain bosses and one shots most players not going full tank. One of my favorite weapons.
- Anonymous
I tried to like it. But when you can just grab a moonveil and deal twice the damage, twice as fast is there any point?
- Anonymous
The weapon art on this was the solution to Alecto for me. Just pin her against the rocks, or the edge of the cliff since she can't fall off, and you can keep her on her tushie until it's over.
- Anonymous
an incredibly useful thing to keep in mind is the special attack does great damage sure but will knock over humanoid enemies, including Malenia in both phase 1 & 2. i ran my head against the wall trying to beat her as a Mage type until i just hammered the weapon art and demolished her with stun lock.
- Anonymous
Might as well use gut's greatsword with cold infused instead, it sucks that royal greatsword doesn't have cold buildup, that should be patched

Probably a mid tier gank spank weapon. Terrible for duels, the only people getting hit by this AoW are ppl who haven't seen it before. It's a 1 trick pony, damage overall is bad. Tracking on the skill is Terrible and it's slow as hell still even after 1.04. Int scaling should be higher to counter the split damage type, truly a wasted opportunity. Imo don't bother for pvp until it sees a real buff. Also, why doesn't this buildup frost? Weapon design is cool as **** tho, but don't shelf your greatsword.
- Anonymous
Very powerful weapon. I have just done a brand new character specifically to get this. Took 10 hours but was totally worth it.
Having said that it is slow (as you'd expect for a colossal weapon) so fast/agile bosses may be a challenge just to get your hits in and not waste FP hitting thin air. Fire Giant to tricky too because you need to be agile for that fight.
- Anonymous
This thing loses 4 guard boost when you upgrade it to +10 because god hates me.
- Anonymous
I’ve been trying out other weapon classes (spears, halberds, etc.) but I always find myself coming back to this sword. Something about it and wolfs assault is no joke.
Colossal gang strong
The Lore, the Characters & Quest involved, the obvious clear description about "Imbued with a Cold Magic" and last but not least the Low scaling => all points toward Cold Affinty and Frostbite Buildup !
This weapon should be buffed to have Frost buildup on hit, for its entire moveset.
Additionally, I believe the INT , STR and (maybe) DEX Scaling should be Buffed a bit :
B C B or A C B or A D A makes more sense thematically and mechanically!
Better Scaling with Frost Proc will make it inline Frost Infusion and will make it very unique Cold Colossal Sword !
Alternatively, they can have a Cold Buff that activates after you use the Weapon Art.

A little trick I noticed..
The first somersault part of the WA, which is practically instant, generally does enough poise damage to interrupt enemy moves/casts, even though it doesn’t do DAMAGE damage.
But if you time it out, it’s downright abusive. Also, there’s a good chunk of time to manually aim where the sword is going to stab down.
- Anonymous
My favourite part of this weapon's art is that when you're flipping in the air, you can push back and interrupt some enemies if you get in their face (used on Banished Knights in Farum Azula as reference so far)

Despite the description, as well as the frosty WA animation… this weapon DOES NOT DEAL FROST DAMAGE. If it actually dealt frost damage you would here the co-op community complaining about it much more. It doesn’t need the frost tbh, this is probably the best (non-bleed) gank spanking weapon in the game. Players tend to get super-aggressive when they have summons… introduce them to our Lord and Savior Artorious

how is this thing with a heavy str investment (60) and the minimum int requirement (22)? is it any good?

What's the best way to build for this weapon assuming I don't want to use any magic? Equal Strength and Intelligence?
- Anonymous
So why does this eapon deal magic damage and not frost?
Like the WA deals frost damage and does frost buildup so i dont really understand it...
Like even in the description it states: "As proof. the sword was imbued with a cold magic at the moment oath was sworn."
Think it's kinda a missed oppourtunity, well still love this weapon and WA.

Another demon of a weapon at mid level PvP, and so far a well kept secret for whatever reason. I didn’t use before patch 1.04 so I’m not sure if the WA always had what seems to be infinite poise… either way at level 79 with 30 str 13 Dex 17 Int and using Radagon Scoreseal and Stargazer Heirloom your looking at 688 AR at +7.
Anyone silly enough to get in your range to attack you will get one shot by the WA

1015 AR +10 on a 40/60 str/int build. Didnt bother +10 any other magic colossal sword once i noticed the dmg difference, they are all sitting around 750-800. Exception is cold watchdog's at 832 +24.

After the new 1.04 patch i think this is now one of the best colossal swords in the game. But probably not for the obvious reasons. Sure, it has long reach and very high AR, but the real fun comes from the new and faster uncharged R2 attack. It is a straight down slam that comes out very fast! Much faster than the greatswords R2. Only maybe 10% slower than the R1 attack and does 30-46% more damage and poise damage per hit! Combine this with two handing it for another +10% extra damage from the patch and you have a murder weapon! Only bad thing is that it takes longer to get out of the animation at the end so if the enemy is a fast boss with small windows you might be better off using the faster R1. Finally if you have to attack twice to kill an enemy you are usually better of with R2+R1 as the second R2 is very slow by comparison.
At +9 with 40 str, 31 dex and 43 int it does 830 AR one handed and 864 two handed without any buffs. For +10 you can probably add 70 AR or so. With buffs and talismans I have gotten it above 1100 AR.
Another big advantage is that the weapon art is much faster now and does a ton of damage if both attacks hit. The second party also have a fair bit of AOE. Just dont use it on giants or enemies who does not stagger from the first hit. It also does not have great tracking so fast enemies might dodge the first part. The followup explosion technically does frostbite, but you have to hit them with it trice or so and few enemies survive being hit three times!
Despite all of this praise I still think the Greatsword is the better Colossal sword. If only because you can infuse it with Bloodhounds step which helps a lot with mobility against bosses. It does less damage, but have a much easier time landing a hit and both swords share a very fast R1 dodge poke attack.
This fantastic weapon still needs some Buffs and Fixes:
First of all: Apply Frostbite on Hit!
2nd: Apply Frostbite on the WA Blast.
3rd: Better Scaling: A STR, C DEX, A INT to be more akin to Cold Weapons. Or alternatively: S C B.
4th: I feel like the WA initial Hitbox or damageand poise damage should be higherand bigger.
5th: I personally wish it had Blaidd full moveset especially his lunging dash thrust attack: Blaidd does a Dante Stinger like poke - wish the running R2 was that dash Thurst.
And R2 was a spin sweep.
Awesome weapon, my Favorite weapon in fact. A few small qualms with it:
I wish it had a running R2 Poke Thrust! : Blaidd does this Dante Stinger like move with the Royal Greatsword where he dashes forward with a long reaching Poking Thrust Attack! I wish we got the full Blaidd moveset!
Additionally, I wish the R2 would have been Horizontal Sweeps, at least make one of the inputs that way.
The Weapon Art is great, but I think the original hit that's very hard to land needs a bigger hitbox and more damage.
This weapon should Proc Frost at all time: description suggest Frost Cold infusion , but it doesn't have Frost except for the Blast.
Finally: Scaling on STR and Magic should be higher. Imo should be A STR Scaling - and B INT at least: A C B STR DEX INT.
Same way I think Loretta's War Sickle needs to be C B A.
Upgrading is a bit bugged still. Had 56 guard boost at +9, went down to 52 at +10.

Does this sword proc frost bite? It's written like it does but there's no details on the "frost build-up".

Depending on your playstyle this weapon has been S tier even before 1.04, now its S+. With 80 int and Rannis hat the weapon art hits like a truck, the only downside of it was its long recovery time, which has been buffed and now feels basically nonexistent, and they also buffed the actual cast speed of it as a bonus.
- Anonymous
Glad this got buffed. Already one of the most damaging Weapon Art in the game for its cost. Now even faster and safer to use.
The only bad thing is still remain though. You cannot cancel the explosion and the WA is very bad without hitting both the plunge and the explosion.
If only Fromsoft changed it into 2 input weapon art and split the cost into 10-10 or something. It would be much much better, even become top tier

Patch 1.04 buffed Wolfs assault , faster animation..along with general colossal weapon buffs its a top tier weapon now

Update 1.04 buffed the Ash of War on this sword- it comes out insanely quick now and you spend less time animation-locked. Sword is now top-tier for me due to how much damage you can dish out from the buffed attack speed of the AoW.
As of new patch the weapon art comes out and recovers slightly faster. Mind you it deals about +3000 damage on enemies if both hits connect

Almost any Wolf-themed named weapon from a FromSoftware game seems to have the absolute best attack output in the game they star in.
Claw talisman and Raptor chest does NOT increase Ashes of war Wolf's Assault.
Rogier spellblade set DOES increase Wolf's Assault by 2% per set piece. Tested both 22.04.13
Can't find info on snow witch hat, will test later.

Hey ABYSSAL GREATSWORD & WOLF KNIGHT GREATSWORD users from DS1 & 3, we couldn't give you the exact swords you wanted again, but enjoy the new and improved ROYAL GREATSWORD ***NOW WITH ICY AOE SPELL BLAST ACTION***
- Anonymous
My favorite unique weapon art. Spammable with near impunity, seems to have an insane stance damage factor. 99% of mobs that get hit by the sword just sit there reeling until the aoe goes off.
Seems to stance break Nox hammer enemies out of their own jumps and just bully their crumpled heap of self. Extremely good against mounted enemies, their horses will be dead by the end of it.
The only straight up weak spot is you can get grabbed out of it and crit upon, so be smart around flying enemies. Also, if you use it against packs of enemies, it’s possible to get stance broken before the aoe fires off. Takes several hits, though
- Anonymous
The sword can NOT be enchanted with magic or consumables. Tested today 1.03
Royal Greatsword +10 at around: 80 INT 30 STR and 40 Dex crossing 1000 AR Damage and reaching 1100+ Damage two handed (using Magic Scorpion)! You can also cross the 1000 mark easily with 26 STR and 35 DEX.
This thing is an absolute beast. I only wish it had a nice 360 sweep spin attack, better running heavy attack, and an easier poke thrust (aside from the rolling one).
Also, while you can get interrupted on the Jump Startup Frames - after that you will tank poise hits! The Ash of War grants MASSIVE POISE guaranteeing the FOLLOW-UP FROST BLAST for massive damage AOE and Knock-Down!
If you drop Terra Magicka and a Coop companion can Buff your Attack Rate , plus Magic Boost Crystal Tear - you'll get hundreds more AR and hit like a true Guts/Blaaid !!!

Does anyone know if wolf's assault gets benefit from claw talisman?

Excellent options for spell blades that want a reliable weapon to fall back on or a method of dispatching trash mobs without dipping into your mana pool.
- Anonymous
According to the wiki, this weapon has the highest total damage per swing, with a very good dmg / stam ratio. Why isn't this considered as the best sword ?
- Anonymous
You might look down on this weapon because it only has C scaling but remember that scaling is based on the base damage and the magic portion is massive at 328.
- Anonymous
Optimal stats to use this are 40/50 STR/INT + base 18 DEX. Poke attacks with it are weaker than the regular greatsword at 60 STR since lowered pierce defenses only apply to physical damage but the high magic damage makes this thing hit harder on all other attacks and is useful when fighting shields. Weapon skill does tremendous damage and has almost infinite hyperarmor with a relatively big crowd control followup explosion. Overall an 8/10 weapon, greatsword is still better due to bigger flexibility of build and much lower stat investment.
For those that keep asking why this weapon is INT, it is a Carian sword. If you have been to the Carian Manor, and paid any attention at all, you would know they come from magic. The biggest reason to use this weapon is for the weapon art, which yes, is a magic attack just like the Moonveil, and is also of Carian origin and only really needs INT. Are you noticing the pattern yet? If you assumed this was a pure strength weapon just because Blaidd never really used the magic on it, well, now you know what the weapon is really good for. Read the description of the weapon.

As a Farron's GS and Wolf-Knight/Artorias enjoyer this was a little disappointing.
Also tip if any of you ever play DS3 again, while Farron's is Parriable as hell when performing the two-handed combo, if you dead aim/no-lock-on it's significantly harder to parry, and those greedy enough to fish for a parry will get Anime Swordsman'd to death lmao.
This also applies to this game, free-aim some attacks to mess with an opponents parry opportunities.
- Anonymous
Weirdly enough, I’m having a lot more fun with this than with Dark Moon Greatsword.
This is a very fun sword and the weapon art is a beauty. I noticed Blaidd never really used it for the magic though? It is a Carian sword, and Ranni infused it with Frost, but I never really saw Blaidd using any magic attacks in my playthrough. He was more interested in the STR, which hilariously enough, this weapon has truly awful scaling with STR and is more of a pure INT weapon.
It is funny, because the scaling at +10 says C STR, D DEX, and C INT. I refuse to believe FromSoftware planned this weapon well, as it also requires 18 DEX, in addition to the 26 STR (that it does not even properly scale with) and 22 INT. Who really wants to increase all of these different stats for nothing? In my testing, going pure INT was the only thing that gave returns/scaled well, so why did they make it seem like you would need more STR than the base requirement, which is 26, by giving this weapon C scaling with both STR and INT?
TLDR This weapon only truly scales with one stat, so making the other requirements so high is weird, especially on DEX.
- Anonymous
At +10, this weapon has higher INT scaling (0.72) than STR (0.63), even though both are listed at C. You'll get the most out of this weapon by maxing INT first, then STR.

Blaidd’s moveset when he uses this is insane, even though we can’t do the same moves, it’s still a solid colossal sword.

At +10 with 60/22/22 str int dex, I'm at 890 AR base, vs 815 for Radahn's sword. Easily the highest AR of anything I've upgraded. Great reach too, but it's slow as hell.

Love that this weapon requires a not insubstantial amount of intelligence to use and scales with intelligence. Kale comments on Blaidd saying that he couldn't find his nose with both hands, and he's clearly right. Blaid is not the sharpest knife in the drawer by any means so I love the implication that either he was using the weapon sub-optimally, or has more of a hidden depth than shown. I know this is looking a little bit too much into a stat but its just funny to me.
it is possible to get this weapon early?
