Ruins Greatsword is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring. The Ruins Greatsword scales primarily with Strength and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for its additional magic damage.
Originally rubble from a ruin which fell from the sky, this surviving fragment was honed into a weapon.
One of the legendary armaments.
The ruin it came from crumbled when struck by a meteorite, as such this weapon harbors its destructive power.

Elden Ring Ruins Greatsword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Wave of Destruction
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Cannot be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables
- Ruins Greatsword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- Wave of Destruction: The weapon skill damage scales primarily with weapon level. There are minor increases in damage from STR levels, and the least increase from INT levels.
- Charged strong attacks cause a small burst of gravity magic upon slamming the ground. This slam causes additional damage, as well as staggering enemies in close proximity. This doesn't cost FP, but consumes more Stamina than normal charged heavy attacks.
- If the player doesn't meet the stat requirements to wield the weapon, the following penalties are applied:
- They will become unable to use the Weapon Skill.
- Their stamina cost on each attack is increased.
- They cannot benefit from the weapon's magic scaling.
- However, meeting the STR requirement allows the physical damage and scaling of the weapon remain the same. The base magical damage also remains unaffected.
- This could prove useful for pure Strength builds if the player manages to acquire it early in the game, provided they can find the Somber Stones to upgrade it.
- Sell Value:
1000
- Normally you can rotate to attack in any which direction during the final stages of the animation but with this weapon the 1H R2 is seemingly locked into whatever direction you were facing when pressing R2. (This bug been patched as of 1.07).
- One of 9 Legendary Armaments.
- Note: As of Patch 1.08, the Speed of Crouching and Rolling Attack has been slightly increased.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the speed of guard counters for this weapon has increased

god i wish i hadn't chosen not to use this on my first playthrough. it's literally 16 int!!! that's all it took for me to hem and haw my way out of having any fun. try new things folks, force yourself if you have to.

This weapon was why I committed to a Str/Int playthrough for my first character.

Heavy Watchdog's Greatsword+25 and Ruins Greatsword+10 have the same exact strength scaling value, but Ruins has 2 more base physical damage and the magic base+scaling tacked on for free. Ruins also has better guarding stats all the way down.

A fine weapon. There are times that it feels like the most broken weapon. S scales with strength and the weapon art just obliterates pretty much everything in its path. And, the crazy thing is I'm using this at +9 and it is still just silly!
- Anonymous
I used this weapon on my first playthrough and this thing absolutely slaps. Does great damage and the WA does good damage and makes up for the short length of the weapon. Overall really fun weapon and although I didn’t use it much the charged heavy has that nice delayed gravity explosion for some bonus damage.

I've been laying waste with this collosal sword. Beat the Sol castle boss and Lord of blood on the first try. It went thru them like hot butter. Definitely a great sword for bosses.

Does this weapon deal bonus damage to gravity type enemies, like other gravity weapons?
- Anonymous
I never once thought vendricks ultra great sword needed a magic buff.
This thing packs a wallop! The L2 gravity attack is brutal and has incredibly long range, really cant go wrong with this weapon but if you missed it I feel sorry for you.

As of 1.09, this weapon's pure physical damage now surpasses the Heavy GUGS's total damage at high Strength values, and this weapon ALSO deals some magic damage on top, so it's the supreme bonk colossal (but it has the second least reach while the GUGS has the most reach... but it has a really cool ranged Skill).
- Anonymous
This should have better fire and lightning absorptions. Its made of stone for chrissakes, how is that not less conducive of heat and electricity. How are these the same as the greatsword.

I really think the 16 int requirement paired with one of the highest Strength requirements was a terrible idea. 16 is a bit steep, 13 or 14 would be more appropriate for a weapon that already has one of the highest strength requirements in the game.
- Anonymous
the int requirement gives you access to scholars shield, if you want to make an ultra beefcake tank build.

The charged r2 has a lower-than-average motion value, but coupled with the explosion it actually ends up being higher than other UGS.

I've been a enjoyer of the dragon greasword in ds1, the king's ultra greatsword in ds2 and the fume ultra greatsword in ds3. I had not the chance to use the dragon bone smasher in Des, but i got to smash and slice my way through with the amygdalan arm.
I feel like i've come full circle with this one.

This weapon is too amazing in PVE. Together with good spirit summon, you can beat bosses easily by spamming skill.

Anon 27 Dec 2022 03: 55... TRUE, the weapon itself has horrible range and its ash of war is the weakest ash of war, with no buff "waves of destruction" deals less than 600 damage in pvp... it's s.a.d. and extremely disappointing that "FROM" only thinks about Faith & Dexterity, while not even looking at Intelligence & Arxane & Strength are at a huge disadvantage compared to Dex and Faith...
- Anonymous
1000+ hours in and had no idea this thing left a gravity explosion after a charged r2. (Never used it and invaders just spam L2.) Shout out to that summon who actually used a weapons full move set as I'm finna make a graviturgy warrior because of you.
This is a good weapon for the Mohg Rune farm area if you don't have any of the other options, it has decent range and damage.

This sword does a bit more damage with most attacks than a heavy greatsword at high strength levels (all light attacks and jumping, rolling, back-step heavy attacks) thanks to its extremely high strength scaling and added magic damage. However, its basic R2 attacks seem to have low attack modifiers and do less damage uncharged. When the heavy attacks are charged, they will out-damage the greatsword's charged R2s only if the gravity burst hits, otherwise the sword alone does less. Though the gravity effect will hit most of the time when the sword does, the range is extremely short, so if the sword knocks the target back even a little it may miss. Just something to be mindful of.

Truly a legendary weapon
- Anonymous
this weapon is truly legendary. pretty much every other legendary weapon is unremarkable apart from its weapon art
- Anonymous
Even better than the extra damage of the charged heavy's gravity burst is the high poise damage of it. Anything stunned by the sword itself from the charged R2 will be stunned again, and that extra few seconds of vulnerability makes landing a second charged R2 much more realistic. It's one of the slowest attacks in the game that can actually stun-lock an enemy, even some of the toughest ones.
- Anonymous
using this on a build with tons of charged attack buffs and landing the heavy deletes pretty much anything off the face of the earth
- Anonymous
I was unable to get this weapon on my first playthrough since I did the festival and missed the boss, then did sellen's quest before talking to Jerren, and killed him so now im unable to revert redmane castle

Finished the game with ruins on left and and ultra greatsword on my right arm dual wield. I almost melt everything late game with mimic teat except ofc melania. She took 20 times to master.

A the Albinuriac bow summon got me through this boss.
I killed the misbegotton then summoned her at one end of the arena then drew the knight across the arena and she peppered his back with arrows. Eventually the knight slowly walks over to her and some strong attacks to his back re draws his aggro and resets the tactic.
- Anonymous
If you’re trying to do it this fight at a relatively low enough level, I heavily recommended flame of the redmanes. Spam it for the poise break and you should be able to sneak in a jump attack into a repoiste.

Wave of Destruction is one of the best rune-farming weapon skills in the game. It requires a little skill to line up your shot correctly. Using target lock can help with that.

I don't like how this looks but how much does INT come into play with its scaling? It says here the weapon skill scales to whatever upgrade level the sword is at and a little from STR, I only have 17 INT so what about the base damage from the sword itself does that scale to INT?
- Anonymous
Kinda cool how most fromsoft games have atleast one ultra greatsword thats just a gigantic piece of rubble/rock/steel etc. fashioned into a weapon vaguely resembling a sword.
- Anonymous
Vertical r1s would've made more sense than the default r1's considering it doesn't even have a blade, its just a massive chunk of meteorite fashioned into something that hardly resembles a sword afterall.
- Anonymous
You need to level blue dex to use this (dont tell anyone you leveled that up tho)

Haven't played since doing 2 playthroughs right after launch, with the patch that buffed speed and guard for colossal weapons, is this one more viable (as in you can actually get away with doing something other than jump R2 spam) and fun than it used to be?

Are you tired of armored enemies with shields blocking all of your attacks and being annoying? No worries! Hit them with the weapon art with their shield down and you can laugh as they are violently tossed in the air with no way of recovering!
- Anonymous
Another tip: if you're using this two-handed, offhand something like the Sacrificial Axe. Offhand passive bonuses apply even when two-handing the main weapon, so if you cast Wave of Destruction and kill 5 weak enemies then you'll regenerate 20 FP, which is actually more than the skill's cost if you have the carian talisman (19 FP). So it really helps you use the skill constantly.

I had trouble getting this weapon at first, but finally succeeded (easily) by using the greatshield ashes +3. Basically this fight obviously should not be done before killing Radahn since the festival makes it so trivial to get to the site of grace, and also makes it much easier to do non-festival castle since you're already inside, working backwards.
Anyway, with Radahn dead, go into Nokron. You'll face very weak easy enemies and will come across the greatshield ashes very quickly (no boss fights). Get them, upgrade to +3, and it will do wonders to help with this fight. I was level 60 using a grafted dragon +4.
As for this weapon, it's awesome. Its range is much longer than you'd expect, and wide, and a single cast can wipe out a ton of ordinary enemies, and knocks down most that survive. For the latter reason, I found it very helpful against NPC invaders as well. I've also used it on bosses to great effect; it doesn't knock the large ones down of course but it does heavy damage from range and the cast time is very fast. And the effects just look awesome.
It's also surprisingly good for blocking when two-handed.

so why does this take int but bolt of gransax and cragblade don’t take fth?
- Anonymous
So this takes 16 int but the bolt of gransax and cragblade take no faith???
- Anonymous
good luck swinging that tards, by the time you finish your R2 you won't even see what struck you with madness and owned you (gonna give you a tip, it starts with "Vyke" and ends with "Spear")
This is the only page that mentions exactly how you get the weapon, which isn't very helpful, because that way you have to know it exists to look for how to get it.
- Anonymous
Wave of Destruction is hilarious and fun to spam. Absolutely dominates anything.
- Anonymous
Flame of the Redmanes makes the fight very trivial FYI so this weapon can be acquired quite early if desired. You need 34 natural strength (and 16 int) to two-hand it, but the +5 strength talisman, and +3 radagon talisman, can both be acquired early pretty easily too, so then you need just 26 natural strength to two-hand it which isn't a big deal.
For damage numbers, I tested it with 35 strength and 25 int against the stagecoach trolls in Limgrave, and I don't count the first hit due to its 25% bonus. I tested the weapon skill beyond melee range so these numbers are purely of the ranged attack.
At +0 it was 246 damage.
At +6 it was 668 damage.

This is dumb. Like imagine if yhorms greatshield required luck to use or something. Or if isshin needed faith to use his glock 19 (also f*ck those two you need to fight in order to get this. Its a poorly designed duo boss that dosent work well together)

I find it curious that this thing doesn't have the "Gravity" bonus.
Given, that it's clearly using Gravity magic for it's minor innate magic damage as well as for the special abilities (The WA and unique R2 effect)
It's not a big deal, given how infrequently "Gravity" enemies are fought (And then, how much it impacts given their typically high magic resistances), but it's still kind of odd.

1H R2 seems to be bugged.. once activated the attack direction can't be altered at all. Normally you can rotate to attack in any which direction during the final stages of the animation but with this weapon the 1H R2 is seemingly locked into whatever direction you were facing when pressing R2

Anyone str build has stacked points in faith for erdtree greatshield should honestly respec for 16 int and go with this as a utility weapon for invasions. The AoW is immensely good for the unsuspecting and my invasions success rate has improved because of this.
- Anonymous
must have in toolkit for STR invaders. AoW is an absolute host stomper if used in the right situations.
I always used this during ambushes when host and phantoms are occupied with npcs. Close in with your normal str weapons like UGS after

Despite the rolling R1 being a sweeping attack, it still uses the same attack data as normal Colossal Swords, meaning it does thrust damage.
Will you get good mileage with this even at min-max int?
