Restores 80 HP plus 7% of your total HP upon defeating enemies

Rykard's Great Rune is a Great Rune in Elden Ring. Rykard's Great Rune restores HP upon defeating enemies. Great Runes in Elden Ring are special items dropped by Demigod Bosses that can be equipped to acquire special passive bonuses.

A Great Rune of the shardbearer Rykard.
Its blessing restores HP on attacking enemies.

Rykard was amongst the children of Rennala and Radagon, who became demigod stepchildren after Radagon's union with Queen Marika.

But Rykard fed himself to the blasphemous serpent, Great Rune and all.

Elden Ring Rykard's Great Rune Notes & Tips

Where do I take Rykard's Rune Elden Ring?

After you defeat Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy at Mt. Gelmir and gain Rykards Great Rune, you will need to bring it to the Divine Tower of West Altus. This Location is found through Sealed Tunnel. [Map Link]

The tower is not accesssible until your encounter with Rykard and he is defeated. Before his defeat, the doors to the tower will be tightly blocked. The Divine Tower of West Altus is found in Capital Outskirts between Altus Plateau and Leyndell, Royal Capital. It can only be reached by going through a series of illusory walls found in Sealed Tunnel. The path is linear, so there's no way to miss it, and illusory walls are generally at the end of each new area. Interact with the walls until they are revealed. You will be generally descending through the tunnels through these walls and there will be elevators to take you to the lower levels. At the end of this route, you have to defeat the Onyx Lord. In the next area you are able to see the sky again but the path is still linear. Here you'll find the next Site of Grace and the entrance to the Divine Tower of West Altus. Once you reach the tower, step to the center of the tower platform to ascend. Take the stairs all the way up wrapping around the exterior of the tower to eventually reach. Here, you can restore the power of the Great Rune. To view a full location walkthrough on how to navigate through the Sealed Tunnel to reach the tower, view the Sealed Tunnel page here.

Rykard's Great Rune Other Notes

  • Restores 80 HP + 7% of player's max HP each time an enemy is defeated
  • Healing effect stacks with Blasphemous Blade, Greathorn Hammer, Serpent-God's Curved Sword and Taker's Cameo.
  • Since the health restore only works upon killing an enemy, the Rune is effectively useless against most bosses. It does however work pretty well to clear minor dungeons (like Catacombs or Caves) or overworld areas with multiple enemies.

Would have been cool if instead this gave 1 extra talisman slot (perhaps that’s for the DLC). I mean, if Rykard can wear 80 bazillion rings on his hands, why can’t I wear 5?

Not every single thing in the game should be designed for All Stakes 1v1.
The majority of the game is exploration and mobs and this an excellent thing to use for exploring and mobs. Fun flavor to it too.

Stacks with Blasphemous Blade, and Serpent God's Curved Sword, and Taker's Cameo. Stack with every defense buff and you make almost every area in the game laughably easy. Build kinda dogshit on bosses though.

A greatrune whose effect would only be useful in Dark Souls 2 or in very select challenge runs or builds.
I guess it might be okay for exploration, but the game practically encourages sprinting from grace to grace and only fighting when it's unavoidable.

they should make this things effect trigger whenever you watch a bloodstain to its completion (the point where the character that died fades away), i know they won't because that would almost completely invalidate both red flasks and non arena fights against other people but it'd be funny to think about if it did have that extra perk and they kept pools of blood from ds2

mediocre at best, i think a fun addition that they'll never add though would've been a limited use item that lets you summon a phantom great serpent that could damage you but do big damage to enemies like the madaras whistle on top of the healing so more people would be more inclined to use this instead of just blasphemous l2 + cameo all the time

I think I can see some value in this with a medium shield build, where the health you lose from blocking can be easily restored without consuming a flask. I'd have to do some experimenting though-

In the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds at least, now we can eat the very slugs togetha (and have functionally unlimited HP)

Good for help with clearing challenging dungeons you're stuck on but that's about it. Most likely will not need it in the overworld/easier dungeons and it is of course completely useless for boss fight. Even then once you clear the dungeon and get to the boss it becomes useless again.

This Great Rune may suck for most boss fights, however when exploring (particularly either Legacy Dungeons or the much bigger dungeons like Lendyell Catacombs), this Great Rune shines as while extra HP/FP/Stamina or +5 in all stats is great in all, those effects don't actively heal you like this one does. This can actively save you from needing to use Crimson Flasks as much, if not outright abandon Crimson Flasks outside of boss fights when on a Faith build.

This also shines in some boss fights where there are extra enemies (O'neil, Nial, Demi-Human Chiefs, Rennala, Godskin Duo, etc), that way when making progress by killing things you're also regaining some of the health back that you likely lost getting there.

I appreciate that they added a Great Rune like this, not all of them need to be good for boss fights, remember that exploration is a BIG part of this game as well.

If the rune arcs weren't consumable or maybe if they didn't need to be replaced on each death, only needing to use a new one when you switch your great runes this would have had some value. Especially for clearing out the albinaurics around blood-filled lake for the fat coin purse and where cerulean flasks to replace FP used to kill them as quickly as possible are more important than crimson flasks, if you can't clear them all with two healing flasks you've gone there too soon anyway. Also, this could have been good for keeping the ritual sword talisman powered up for the rune farm, as it is though it's worthless.

Kinda useless in pve since there are too many bonfires. Good if you are fighting several enemies but then again who tf does that?

not sure if this is a bug or not, but I just got healed from viewing a bloodstain of someone on their horse that ran off of a cliff.
I was able to continuously view that same bloodstain and get heals each time.

With Taker's cameo, Blasphemous blade, this Rune, and the Taker's flame weapon art. Killing someone grants you 17% + 405 HP which is insane when you have close to 2200 HP cause that heals somewhere in the ball park of 700-800 HP

They really need to learn how to correctly explain stuff at FS just by reading it you read it heals you when attacking not killing. There Is multiple things In the game that says it does one thing but does another. Just say what it actually does!

                                    • Sadly, this seems like a worse version of Malenia's Great Rune as it does not work for tough enemies.
Godskin Swaddling Cloth, Malenia's Great Rune, and Blood Tax with a lot of poise is really all you need to be invincible.

Is the effect passive or do you need to pop a rune arc to activate it? Does the effect last forever as long as you don’t die?

                                        • Anonymous

Not much use to this by the time we are intended to get it, because by that time, you will have about 10 charge on flask and +8 upgrade, which will keep you healed anyway, plus you will also get Godskin Swaddling Cloth, which is more than good enough for the purpose. There no reason to use this over Godrick's greatrune.

                                          • Anonymous

It seems to also heal you if your summons die, making it slightly more useful in bossfights when used with summons that have a lot of boys.

Might also heal when skeletons “fake die” but haven’t tested

This is arguably the best rune for exploring the open world as it also works on animals. If you are ever low on HP and out of flasks, but don't want to sit at a grace, kill a bunch of sheep (or goats, ram , whatever they are) and you are back to full in no time.

                                              • Anonymous

They should make this rune heal on both kills and successive attacks (basically a hybrid of Taker’s Cameo and Swaddling Cloth). I think that would make it much more useful all around for both exploring an bosses.

                                                • Anonymous

Takers' Cameo + Blasphemous Blade + Rykrd's Great Rune

Have fun exploring without worrying about your crimson flasks

                                                  • Anonymous

This + godskin swaddle cloth + taker cameo = malenia's great rune but actually good. Perfect for curved swords as a running or jumping attack triggers all heals. And my build has all that AND the finger greatshield + talisman

                                                    • Anonymous

I mean this information feels like asking your wife what's for dinner, and her saying there's 'food' for dinner.

                                                      • So these heals are % based, I have 60 vigor and right now am using Rykard's Great Rune, Blasphemous Blade, and Taker's Cameo - I am healing over 400 HP per kill lol. Tested by killing a rider and his horse simultaneously and healing from 1010 HP to about 1860. Pretty goofy for exploring lol, like I really need to screw up badly to need to drink a crimson ever unless I've stumbled upon a boss which I'm always full flasks for running this :)

I was a little disappointed at first, since when you select the rune it states "Restores HP by attacking". It's only if you look at the details page that it instead states that it "Heals by defeating enemies." which is significantly less helpful.

Still, the heal is significant enough that you can remain at full health throughout most of a dungeon or while exploring, provided relatively decent play. Doesn't help you much against bosses, though. I'd say this rune is situationally helpful depending on what you want to do: Good for exploration, but switch to Godrick's if you're going to fight a boss.

I'd pick this over most even Goddrick's. Especially while doing dungeons so that I don't run out of flasks by the time I unlock the boss room, making me go back to the grace just so I have to plow through everything between there and the boss door.
Yeah it doesn't help against bosses, obviously, but who cares about that. There'll be NO BRAKES ON THIS RIDE!
