Just a warning to people thinking to use this in boss fights, you get so much hyper armor while casting this that some bosses from a neutral state will get to perform full combo's on you while you are stuck in the recovery frames. with 55 vigor and 128 flat/48% physical reduction I have been combo'd down from 100% during the recovery unable to control my character in NG. If your planning to use this spell in PVE bossing be very careful when you cast it. No idea why they thought giving hyper armor frames to the longest recovery animation in the game was a good idea.

Has some niche use against enemies with high rot resistance. You'll need to be able to tank a hit or two while it goes off though. Good time to use it is when an enemy is getting up from being hit by a critical attack. Has a cheaper FP cost compared to the double cast of rotten breath and can low profile some attacks while the flower blooms, but otherwise rotten breath has it beat.

So I killed malenia(who might be blade of miquella), got her cool nuke spell, only to be locked in an huge animation and literally everything just walked up to me and grabbed/comboed me to death? Goddamn rotten breath is better in most ways, which is a shame, because this is much cooler than breathing on people :/

          • Anonymous

I use this spell very often- it immediately rot every big enemy and ticks so much time ( dragon , rune bear etc) I always managed to survive first bloom and better inflicting rot then dragon breath .

            • Anonymous

To all saying malenia bloomed in the room next to her boss arena, you are wrong. You can pick up clothes that are from one of milicents sisters, they are right next to the flower. The travelers clothes, meaning its a sister of milicent that made it there only to bloom

I see a lot of complaints about no hyper armour or DR on this spell so I’ll offer the thing that let me beat its owner in 2 attempts:

Have we tried popping an Ironjar beforehand? You don’t need to roll to cast it, its movement isn’t based off of your walk speed , so it seems like the perfect temp solution till From decides to care.

I tried to use this on maliketh. I thought the whole insanely long recovery time was just malenia’s thing, so that we can heal or cast spells to damage her. Boy, was I so wrong, I used it on maliketh, and he just stood there hitting me until I die, while I keep doing that supermodel pose

                  • You aren't going to believe this, but Scarlet Aeonia is the only way I could find to beat Mohg on my NG+ run. I've been trying to do it with no spirit ash summons and I didn't want to use the Mohg Shackle. Two days of trying every single incantation I had, respeccing to arcane, every weapon I had, etc. Nothing worked, then I have one last ditch effort when I see Scarlet Aeonia, the world’s most beautiful and useless spell in my spellbook. I had nothing to lose so I tried it. Killed him on the first try lol. Something about it just works on this creepy SOB. And I have never found another place that this spell was worth it.

This incantation would benefit greatly from hyperarmor. It would still be a risk to use, but at least there would be a potent reward, even if it trades.

Mentioned this over on the Prosthesis Wearer's Heirloom page but it def fits here too:

"when the young girl encountered her mentor and his flowing blade, she gained wings of unparalleled strength"

If we take this part literally it could mean that Malenia "bloomed" in a battle with her mentor. This would finally put the debate about Malenia's third bloom to rest since all 3 are accounted for in the established canon.

                          Pros:

                          - Looks cool af
                          - Basically guarantees Scarlet Rot proc on any target that can be rotted

                          Cons:

                          - Makes you die because you're stuck in recovery animation for approximately 4 whole eternities
                          - Takes 3 spell slots
                          - Attained from the hardest boss in the game (As well as one of the end game bosses, making it basically a NG+ spell)

                          • Anonymous

This spell travels further vertically during casting than it does horizontally when you actually try to hit something. How tf does that make any sense? I can miraculously levitate like 10 ft in the air and when I majestically crash into the ground I’m only capable of 3 feet max

                            • So, the only use for this spell is to scralet rot bosses what usually too hard to rot with rotten breath. Like Placidusax, Radagon, fire giant and malenia herself, lol. Still pretty trash consedring it need 3 slots and you may die while sitting in the flower

                              • Malenia is a god so she gets to show you True Terror. We're some half-dead schmuck that wasn't even worth stealing the limbs off of for grafting (or... however the hell we ended up in the cave instead of glued to Godrick). So we get a nearly-completely useless wet fart of a spell that she uses to send us straight to the nearest Stake/destroy an entire continent in a tantrum.

damage reduction and hyperarmor while using this is literally the easiest buff ever, if it is really the only buff it is going to get

                                  • Anonymous

As others have already said, it's relatively underwhelming given how long the casting takes and the fact that your character is stuck with a really long recovery animation without any kind of damage mitigation afterwards. Worth noting though that it does apply a "deadly" version of scarlet rot that will absolutely melt boss HP bars, and is technically more FP efficient than rotten breath. But actually landing the attack can be difficult, especially against the late game hyperactive bosses who never stop attacking and constantly dash all over the arena like cocaine addicts, and you're basically guaranteed to trade 1-2 hits in the process especially if you're fighting solo.

But it does look cool as hell, and it's incredibly satisfying the land, I'll give it that much. But honestly needs another buff, either speeding up the casting time significantly or allowing you to roll out of the animation immediately after the flower explosion.

This one and flame of the flame god are competing for coolest looking yet useless spells in the game and so far this one is number one

                                      • Anonymous

One of the coolest incantations so far even for animation, but needs to be buffed especially for PvE. The casting makes character vulnerable to hits because of slow recovery casting time, and the rotting takes a while to gain effect. I had to spam a few times on bosses, works well with many weak enemies surrounding though.

some may say that rotten breath is better, and they are right. But this spell has what rotten breath lacks. PRESENTATION!

If you summon torrent while the scarlet fog is still visible he'll get it too as if he's an enemy. I'm pretty sure summons are unaffected though.

I love this spell I don't care that it's semi bad. It's just so funny to turn into a flower and bloom out scarlet rot

Great spell, uh, does decent damage. Just wished it used less than 3 slots and gave iFrames when you're in the flower. You're better off using Rotten Breath if you need rot. Scarlet Aoenia's got the cool factor, though. Nice to look at.

                                                  • Anonymous

Dunno why everyone hates on this. After full buff I use this to initiate boss fights. Yes you get hit, but every single time I used it I triggered rot on 1st try. I had multiple bosses where rot didn't set after multiple breaths. Plus this is the stronger version of rot against high hp enemies.
So it doesn't matter how much hp the boss has, 2 of these you trade for 2 hits will do the job.

                                                    • Anonymous

What would fix this and have it not completely garbage compared to rot breath would be if they made it so the bud form allows you to fall from greater heights without canceling the spell. Like if it’s a safe height just let the spell land, the recovery is atrocious.

                                                      • Anonymous

Extremely funny to use with Mimic Tear. Because Scarlet Aeonia has massive poise, slotting only this along with equipping only a seal will make your mimic have superarmor and eat up most attacks because of how chonk mimic is.

                                                        • Anonymous

Can be used against Mohg to rot him during the Nihil Chant, use Purifying Crystal Tear in preparation, and cast the spell on his back as he begins the cast, you have enough time to stand up before he can hit you again.

                                                          • Anonymous

Nearly useless--the AoE is so small that you'll barely hit anything in pve, and you're stuck in the crouch animation long enough for your crush to text you back. And it doesn't give iframes, so you usually die before you can do anything else.

                                                            • Anonymous

Best looking spell in the game, incredibly underpowered and consumes 3 slots though. Use it only to punish very long animations such as Placidusax's Ruin, another Scarlet Aeonia, Elden Stars, Dragon breath (if you caught them from behind and they keep breathing) and maybe a seppuku if you're fast enough. You need to free aim this incantation to NOT directly hit your enemy, just land close. Otherwise you'll stagger them out of their animation with pitiful damage and they'll roll out of the explosion. Good luck fellow servant of rot.

                                                              • Anonymous

"It has bloomed twice already. With the third bloom, she will become a true goddess." So, was the second blooming when we fought her? Considering the lore is connected to a soul we get after killing her, that seems to be the implication?

                                                                • Anonymous

Though people don't seem to like it. I like it for bosses and crowds, only thing I hate about it is your stuck vulnerable in the crounched animation for way to long. Wish you could roll cancel out of the crouched animation as soon as the explosion goes off. Sad cause its FP friendly compared to the dragon Scarlet Rot incantations. Plus its nice for faith builds if you don't go Arcane.

                                                                  • Anonymous

In other games you get the most powerful weapons/magic spells by killing the hardest endgame bosses. In From Software games, it seems that we get literally one of the worst incantation by killing one of the hardest boss if not the hardest of all. Thank you From Software.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Sadly not buffed enough—this thing needs to travel way farther and way faster in order to be reasonably usable. The only way to set this up in pvp is in small spaces, or to fully charge a glintblade then immediately cast. It is my favorite spell and I will keep trying to find ways to land it, but I really don’t see how, without significant tuning to travel distance, this thing will ever see play outside of being a meme, sadly.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

The only thing that changes is that now you cast it and then die instead of getting staggered ou of it.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

I’m sure it’s still worthless in PVP but in PVE it’s great now. The chip damage and rot build up shred through anything that tries to interrupt it, even if you miss the initial explosion

                                                                                  • The best way to fix this spell is to give it a similar animation with wrath of gold/radagon's rings of light. The wind up is too obvious and anyone that sees that would just roll back and switch to throwing knives/spells. But if it's a fast animation like WoG, it could catch people off guard and punish them nicely with rot.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Yet, the description says that it has only bloomed twice so far. Which makes me believe that Malenia second phase wasn't her final and "true" form yet. Despite being called "Goddess of Rot".

                                                                                      • Anonymous

the biggest issue I have with this incantation is how long it locks you in place after you land, it makes it pretty niche. for one slot or maybe even two I could justify taking it but it's not nearly strong or versatile enough to warrant three

                                                                                        • Anonymous

pair this incant with the dragon communion seal and boom almost instant rot proc, still I would recommend rotten breath over this spell.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

In pvp after the buffs you still probably will never hit this spell, but your opponents must respect it for the entire duration the spell is active unless they have access to range attacks. On the flip side, you look super cool, even if you hit nobody.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

I feel like they just had a list of incantations that were like all of these need hyper armor without considering what it would do. Yes now you can do this spell uninterrupted but now you’re a sitting duck… enemies can hit you as many times as they like until you move. I feel like it has been made more useless than before, at least before I was interrupted and could get out of enemies attacking, now I just sit there waiting to die

                                                                                              • This incantation was buffed in 1.04 - it received increased casting speed, decreased recovery delay, and hyper armor during the cast. In my limited testing, the speed increase feels really noticeable, especially during the bud to bloom phase. This might actually be useable now?

                                                                                                • Anonymous

With the latest patch, v1.04, the incantation went from interrupted at the slightest touch, to getting hit multiple times and the move FINALLY going off. It’s crazy how hyper armor can really help a move out. This incant is really up there now.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

This spell received a major buff in 1.04.

It now has hyper armor, making it at least quite good for large crowds or strong enemies.
Not sure how good it will be in PvP however, might be good for area denial or melee gank squads, but if fighting a ranged caster this will probably mean death for you.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Much more usable now; rotten breath is still the safer option for large crowds and at range, but this is a great incantation after the patch. Still think it could be made a 2-slot incantation though.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Give the initial cast and flower super armor. That would make this incantation s-tier. Leave the recovery. Makes the user plan when to use it.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Here’s how I think this spell should be buffed. It should:

                                                                                                          Have significantly increased range

                                                                                                          Increased hyperarmor

                                                                                                          One less fp slot

                                                                                                          Less fp cost

                                                                                                          Higher rot buildup

Significantly increased defense during the recovery, but the player should still be vulnerable during the last second of the recovery.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Took this to the cliff in Mohgwyn to test it out and kept getting killed by all the Jirens on the hill. If they can easily kill you while using this, imagine what tougher enemies or bosses can do. The cast/recovery time is just too long to make it worth it. Really disappointing, because it looks so cool!

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

They should fix this incantation in a patch or something, because it's really cool looking and is dropped by the hardest boss in the game easily. All it really needs to do is give you hyperarmor when the flower explodes (so you're not literally sitting their stunlocked). If used on unsuspecting crowds, it works pretty great honestly, and in the hands of mimic is actually fantastic. Just some hyperarmor or maybea poise boost would make this thing super worth it as it's the only other incantation that can cause scarlet rot damage. Also maybe using just 2 slots at most would be cool?

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

And for some reason the first move that sends you to the enemy can be blocked by a shield which staggers you

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

3 memory slots, stupidly long cast time that takes 2 moves, no hyper armor, has recovery time, close range, and i doubt it staggers enemy enough for you to recover before getting hit + meh initial damage. Stick with breath.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

At first like many, I thought Malenia bloomed for the third time in her fight. But then, I realized it doesn't say "GOD SLAIN" when you beat Malenia, it just gives you her items and now I'm scared.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

For everyone asking about the damage type of scarlet aeonia: it is, shockingly, all physical damage. The bulb hitting, the flower bloom, and even the AOE rot ticks after were all boosted by flame grant me strength, but not boosted by flame-shroud cracked tear or any of the other elemental boosting tears either. In other words, any combination of buffs to your melee damage will also directly buff the damage of this spell. Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength, and the blood/poison exultations will all boost the damage of the spell. Obviously boosting incantation scaling also improves the damage as well, so the faith-knot tear would be a solid choice for a small damage bump.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

After blooming while fighting radahn she slept for the whole time until fighting the player so that is clearly bloom #2. Which leaves us with Bloom #1 being that one right before her arena, which infested the haligtree. But does anyone know why the hell that first bloom happened? Why did she?
