Elden Ring Scholar's Shield Guide
- Glintstone Sorcery
- Cast this spell with a staff in your right hand, whilst a shield is equipped in your left hand.
- Lasts 1 minute (60 seconds).
- With Old Lord's Talisman equipped, this duration becomes 1:18 minutes (78 seconds)
- Reduces stamina damage taken while blocking by 35% (applied after Guard Boost; shields with higher Guard Boosts in the first place will see less benefit from this effect)
- stacks multiplicatively with the Greatshield Talisman for a 48% reduction to stamina damage - Guarded Damage Negation +30%
- Magic Guarded Damage Negation +70%

sure you can use this to make greatshields even better but you can also use it to make small shields as good as mediums lol
- Anonymous
Many people forget that this can be applied to all shields, not just physically infused ones, on top of being generally better than barricade shield specifically for the greatshield class.
- Anonymous
To compare it with the shield grease, it gives you 12% more guard boost and 10% more damage negation (50% for magic damage). If you use a shield a lot, there's no reason not to get the 12 intelligence to use this spell.
- Anonymous
you can use this to return fingerprint shield to its former glory
- Anonymous
If you two hand your weapon does it turn off the buff to your shield?

- Anonymous
why does this no longer mention the 1.07 adjustment to effectiveness on greatshields
to quote
"Some effects of the spell Scholar's Shield, the Barricade Shield skill and the Shield Grease item have been adjusted as follows.
The effects on shields with low guard boost have been adjusted upward.
The effects on shields with high guard boost have been adjusted downward"

This spell is great choice for any shield. It not only increases the guard boost of the shield by 25%, but also gives it a strong negation of magic damage. Pay attention if your shield doesn't boast good magic resistance. This spell will be extremely disliked by both Renalla and Radahn.

Concept: “Oh, wizards can use it on their little useless round shields to block enemies as if it was a normal shield!”
Application: you use this on a big slab of rock so you can block the Sun itself.

It either works differently on different shields or the bonus to guard boost is less than 25%. Tested with the Visage Shield - only on max level, with 82 guard boost you get 100% guard boost. I still got chip damage to stamina with 81 and 80 guard boost. Tested on knights in Zamor Ruins on the Mountaintop of the Giants. And btw the greatshield talisman did not make any difference, so it either doesnt work with this spell or just doesnt work with greatshields, need more testing.

lots of people forget this can go on literally any shield, somber or otherwise. lots of shields are pretty trash for blocking but otherwise have cool stuff about them
- Anonymous
Are the bonuses flat or a percentage of the existing stats?
does +30% Damage Negation mean +30 or *1,3? The Information is useless otherwise...
- Anonymous
Haven't heard anyone mention this but how good is this when paired with the Shield Bash Ash of War?
- Anonymous
Wish this worked with weapons too, imagine how cool it would be if this made a new meta of blocking with weapons
Not mentioned anywhere here, but it also reduces status build up. Fought a greatshield turtle using this and I apparently did less than 25% of my opponents bar despite hitting them with approximately 450 bleed build up.
(Yeah I know that sounds obnoxious on paper, but it's on a blood infused zwei. It's pretty impossible to repeat that on someone with a pulse).

This is definetely worth considering even for faith builds. 12 INT is enough to apply this using a staff of the guilty.

New shield poke meta, fast cast, long duration and 100 guard even with an upgraded visage shield!
PROS: Lasts much longer (60 sec) than other shield buffs (Immutable Shield = 30s; Barricade Shield = 5s). Increases guard boost by 25% = Less stamina damage on block. Low INT requirement (12) makes it very accessible to non-INT mains. CONS: Buff is removed if you sheathe your shield (i.e. switch weapons or 2h other weapon) use Barricade Shield (overwrites this & vice versa). The first one is a big issue since you can't use your main hand weapon art without losing this buff. Alternatively you could put "No Skill" on your shield, but IMO I'd take Parry/Carian Retaliation/Barricade Shield over this. It's not cheap FP-wise either, so losing the buff hurts. Given the sacrifices needed to use this, I personally found it not worth using in most situations.

Why the numbers are not modified? My shield is blue but all the stats remain the same.

With Greatshield Talisman nerfed on high guard boost Greatshields this might be the next best thing for pokey builds.

useless spell. used on bronze shield and I still get guard broken by ogres and mannicans easily.

Alright, I'm fairly sure I found the impact (take with grain of salt):
-Guard boost increase by 20%
-Non- physical damage reduction: 0.7x (0.3x for magic)
- Anonymous
Appears to be glitched. Like the other comment on here even at 95 damage reduction if you use this buff it still results in damage per testing on multiple sources that were clearly physical damage. Only appears to boost Guard Boost stat.

Does anyone know how much damage resistance the Scholar's Shield spell raises? Like, is it a flat percentage increase or is it based on your current damage resistance on your shield?

Give a 25% multiplier on guard boost before flat 10 from talisman or flat 35 from barricade.
This means without talisman shield need a minimum of 80 guard boost.
With talisman it's 72
- Anonymous
tested on a visage shield (75 guard boost) + greatshield talisman (+10 guard boost) = did not lose any stamina while blocking so i assume this give atleast 15 guard boost, doesn't seems to scale with int as i tested with 12 int then 44 and nothing changed without the talisman i was still losing the same amount of endurance roughly

THEY NERF THE HELL OUT OF THIS! OMG!
i used to be able to combine it with Barricade Shield. I would cast Scholar Shield first since it had a long casting time and last longer too. and then use Barricade Shield during battle since its near-instant and has a shorter duration.
YES. you heard me right. this spell shield can be used together with the weapon art shield. turning it into a ....like a Super Shield!!! both give guard boost. so they add up. AND Scholar Shield helps to reduce magical damage taken while blocking. Barricade Shield doesn't.
IT WAS SO DAMN GOOD! MAN!
But after the 1.03 patch, i can no longer use them both together. because using Barricade Shield will cancel out/override Scholar Shield instead.
........................oh well......

it may enhance guard boost 18
tested with 81 guard boost shield (Fingerprint Stone Shield) -> lost very little stamina on block
upgraded to 82 -> no stamina loss on block at all
tested with int 19 character.
- Anonymous
I guess it gives percent increment in guard boost.
I tested with great shields.
Guard boost 82 shield made no stamina loss.
Tried with 73 which also lost some stamina but with guard boost 74 shield did not lose any stamina.
guard boost 82 shield + SCHOLAR'S SHIELD -> 100 = increased 18 ~ over 22% increment
guard boost 73 shield + 10 talisman + SCHOLAR'S SHIELD -> not 100
guard boost 74 shield + 10 talisman + SCHOLAR'S SHIELD -> 100 = increased 16 ~ over 22% increment of the shield's base guard boost or 20% increment of the guard boost with talisman
i guess it's around 22 to 23 percent increment of the shield's base guard boost.
Since I only tested with int 19 character, it might be affected by stats.
Tried with some other staves with different spell boost doesn't seem to affect though.(may be due to my low stats?)
can someone do comparison of the shield buffs and which ones do work together please ?
Scholar Shield (Sorcery)
Immutable Shield (Incantation)
Shield Grease (Consumable)
Baricade Shield (Ash of War)
i will then edit it into the appropriate wiki pages, thx

I'm about 30 Int into my build, and I tried it out with some basic physical damage and a staff with good scaling, even though I'm not sure it matters. I noticed a definite reduction in stamina cost for blocking physical attacks.
- Anonymous
I´ve tested this on a turlte shield along with barricade shield, and god, I was almost not losing stamina while tanking, feels like a great combination for medium shields with barricade
- Anonymous
Tested with a 95 phys. shield, was still taking damage with this buff on. It might not affect physical damage types.
- Anonymous
Tried stacking it with Barricade Wall. Resulted in no stamina being lost when blocking, even against bosses.
- Anonymous
Did some further testing.
Int for this was 15.
Shield was Manor Towershield
Tested in Divine Tower of Caeldid on the 2 Knights that occasionally throw firebombs.
The damage reduction is about 15/20% against fire damage when applied.
Boost was also increased, however not nearly as much as barricade shield. Manor Shield with Barricade has 100 Boost and doesn't lose stamina when hit. With Scholar's it did drains stamina upon hit, but less so.
It'd be cool if someone could check whether it scales in any way with int.

It seems to do what it says, boosting damage negation. This spell is NOT like the Barricade Shield Ash, in that it doesn't help your Guard Boost at all, so it doesn't reduce Stamina consumption per block. I did a brief test vs Glintstone Sorcery using monsters in Raya Lucaria, and it does to greatly increase the Magic Negation stat, allowing me to take much less chip damage. Thus this is a highly niche spell for specific situations. I have not tested it vs other damage types like fire and ice.

does it literally just boost % damage negation or it also lowers cost of block
- Anonymous
If used on one of those bleed applying shields it could be pretty good

Anyone know the details on what this buffs? Does it improve stam consumption? Does it let you block stronger attacks? Or does it just improve some block % stats?
- Anonymous
Does this actually increase damage negation at all?
I tried this and barely got it do anything. It does seem to increase "boost" and stacks with Barricade Shield. However it barely reduced damage from fire/light/physical attacks when testing. I tested with 12 Int, so maybe it scales the damage reduction?

Would love to know what it enhances it all by, a flat increase to all or ?
- Anonymous
doesnt display any changes in game to any stats when cast. Seems to work ok though, tried against a giant crab
- Anonymous
wonder how this will work when you also want to buff your sword
I'm assuming not, but does this actually work on weapons held in your left hand? If it does it'd go great on some of the larger weapons which have very decent blocking capabilities already, for example it would in this theory make serpent-hunter block 100% physical and abouts 70% magical damage.
