The Shaded Castle Walkthrough

The Shaded Castle can be found in the North part of the Altus Plateau between the Mt. Gelmir and the Altus Plateau regions and can be seen while crossing the rope bridge between them near the Bridge of Iniquity Site of Grace. The castle is half-sunken into a poisonous bog with the air tinged yellow by the fumes. The castle can be reached by heading north in between the cliffs between the regions, heading east and north from the Old Altus Tunnel Site of Grace is a good way to get there. The Second Church of Marika is close to this area, though a safe way down to the valley from there may be difficult to find and navigate.

To enter the Castle players can use their steed to jump over low parts of the wall to get on top of the walls. One way in can be found following the wall to the northwest and climbing the rocks into the wall. Another way in can be found on the northeast side, keep close to the wall when the ground raises to find a low wall that can be jumped into. The northeast entrance is recommended as this entrance is close to the Shaded Castle Ramparts Sites of Grace, follow the wall southwards to find this Site of Grace.

Along the top and within the castle walls players will find Putrid Corpses as well as some Depraved Perfumers. A variation of Depraved Perfumers using a shield and throwing fire can also be found on the walls. Many Slugs can be found on the ground but also latch on the walls of the castle. 2 Boss enemies from other areas appear in The Shaded Castle as regular enemies, Revenants show up in 2 different places on the castle grounds while Lesser Cleanrot Knights can be found in a few different areas atop the walls and within the castle.

From the Shaded Castle Ramparts Site of Grace, there is a ladder that leads into the castle area. A large amount of the castle grounds are covered in poison, walk carefully between safe or raised areas to not accumulate poison status while exploring or fighting in this area of The Shaded Castle. Using ranged attacks and abilities can be very effective in this part of the castle as you stand in safe places or use the height and range advantage of being on the walls to easily deal with the enemies. Within the walls of the castle, there are a few large dead trees that can be seen from far away, powerful enemies can be found under them but also many bodies with treasures found on them. A Royal Revenant can be found under the black tree in the northwest around bodies that hold a Ghost Glovewort (4) and a Somber Smithing Stone (5). You can find a Smithing Stone (5) and Drawstring Fire Grease under the tree in the south of the castle.

There are also many rocks that jut out from the ground creating small pockets within the castle grounds where enemies and treasure lie. Within the east side of the outer wall, north from the Shaded Castle Ramparts site of grace, is a small area with the south side walled by rocks. Walking down the stone pillar into the area players will be able to see the "Champion's Song" Painting on the right within a wooden structure, to get to the painting there are a set of stairs at the bottom that players can walk up. Following the outers walls of the castle in the northwest area, there is an area where one can find a Giant Miranda Sprout along with many Putrid Corpses, a Smithing Stone (5) can be found in the corner behind it.

To get further into the castle, there is a ladder leading up to the inner west wall, going over this wall will bring you into the next area of the castle and give you access to the next Site of Grace as well as the ladders up to the main castle areas. Going along the top of this wall, heading to the west, you will find a Lesser Cleanrot Knight at the end defending the entrance to a small room there. Defeat them to get to the chest that has the Valkyrie's Prosthesis within. Going east along the wall you will find Putrid Corpses and one particularly large one on the wooden bridge.

From the inner west wall, you can climb over the roofs of the broken buildings to get across the gap and reach the Shaded Castle Inner Gate Site of Grace. Alternatively, you can go up the stairs in the middle of this courtyard area then head left to the Site of grace all the same. The inner east wall can be reached by a ladder that leads up from the inner part of the wall on the east side of the courtyard. At the top of this wall are some enemies but also the Perfume Bottle and a Smithing Stone (5) for players to loot. Taking a few steps back on the wall, you can kick a ladder that leads to the outer courtyard. On its left, you see a set of stone pillars, leading to a corpse (that you saw on a stone pillar in the outer courtyard but couldn't reach) bearing a Stonesword key.

Teleport back to the Shaded Castle Inner Gate Site of Grace. In the middle part of the courtyard up the stairs is a small garden area where a Royal Revenant will spawn and attack the player, also in this garden is a Rot Grease on a body.

Heading up into the castle you will start seeing Rotten Strays and other humanoid enemies within the buildings. Be careful of the small spaces in the buildings and walkways and of being swarmed by multiple enemies. The rooms here have many statues and bookshelves, with enemies hiding behind some of them, the rooms do not have great lighting so a torch is a good idea. Within the first room after going up the ladder there is a Wandering Noble wielding a sword waiting on the side of the entrance ready to jump you. Inside this first room are a ladder with a ranged enemy next to it and a Page hiding behind the statues. Taking the ladder up will bring you to an open area with no enemies, the Perfumer's Cookbook (2) can be found here on the body sat on the chair.

Leaving the room leads to an open walkway with a bridge that reaches to the other side and the next tower up. On the right is a Rotten Stray chewing on a body, loot the body for a Hefty Beast Bone. A Lesser Cleanrot Knight can be found on the bridge blocking the way, once across the bridge the next room has many statues but also 2 Page enemies, one behind the statues and one up the stairs. 2 Gold Fireflies can be found on a body at the back of the room.

Going up the stairs leads to the upper courtyard area of the castle, this is the last area with enemies before the boss and also where a ladder can be found that when kicked down will help create a shortcut from the Inner Gate Sites of Grace. Another Lesser Cleanrot Knight can be found defending the central tower, there are also two rotten strays in this area, one larger than the other; be careful with being surrounded by them. Once this area is clear, head to the opposite side of the courtyard from the entrance to find a lit brazier near the edge with a ladder to kick down. There is also a tower with two Aeonian Butterflies on a tower that can only be reached by jumping onto the south wall and walking to the southeast corner, then jumping to the tower.

Once you make it back to the area you just jumped from, the central tower holds an elevator for players to go up, across the bridge at the top is the boss fight for this area.

BOSS BATTLE: ELEMER OF THE BRIAR

Elemer of the Briar is a humanoid boss that primarily uses one large sword to fight the player that deals a large amount of damage with their attacks. The large greatsword it uses and the shield on its back are both dropped when the boss is defeated. While this boss is a melee fighter, the sword that the boss uses can be thrown and used at a range, the boss can even continue attacking at range before retrieving its sword. Watch out for when its arm or weapon glows red to dodge out of the way of its attacks.

After beating the boss, in the hall where it was defeated, the Castellan's Hall Site of Grace appears and becomes available to use and he drops the Marais Executioner's Sword along with the Briar Greatshield.

It's funny because on the map it looks inviting. This lil castle with lots of green snuggled between Altus and Gelmir. The green turning out to be all poison swamp is something I really should have guessed.

My least favorite place so far.... Got myself the Golden Scarab and saw a castle nearby, "There gotta be a grace somewhere, right?". End up with 160k runes and find no grace, get jumped on by Deathblight MFers and die, respawn super far away: "Wait, someone said Altus tunnel is rather near". Teleport to Altus Tunnel, turn around, fall into the elevator and die again. Reeeeeeeeee

“Elemer of the briar is a humanoid enemy.” He’s a bell bearing hunter! That info would’ve helped me going into the first fight.

From gathered almost all the shitty mobs and put them in one place and put them in a poison arena. All we need is a poisonous Rune bear and it would be a preview of hell.

My interpretation of what happened here:

According to Valkyrie's Prosthesis, Maleigh Marais worshipped Malenia - presumably as the Goddess of Rot, considering his rotten sword and the poison swamp in his house. Maybe he was under her jurisdiction in some way. I think Malenia was offended that Marais had the hots for her rot, which we know she wasn't a big fan of. I would be mad too, if someone simped for me over my disability. In response she and her knights attacked the castle, ransacking the place and ruining the Marais family. This just so happens to be the day of Elemer's planned execution, and he exploits the chaos to take the place over with the sword that would have killed him.

Beast-repellent Torch for dogs/Basilisks, Storm Wall ash of war for Depraved Perfumers, and some kind of healing spell for Revenants (reg 'Heal' is only 12 FTH) — bring these 3, it makes for a MUCH easier go of this place.

Maybe I'm tripping out... but another commenter mentioned something suspicious about the placement of the statues in the Castle. I just discovered something else that might be related and it's piqued my suspicion:

Some of the Statues at the Site of Grace past the Revenant look at you when you walk far enough away from them. They are alive. I don't know what significance that is, but it may have something to do with an undiscovered secret in the area.

I mean... what IS with that place? Is that tower accessible? What are the statues doing? Is there some sort of advanced mimicry happening here with a way to dispel it?

Does anyone know if the summoning pools for co-op are working here? In all of my three playthroughs I have never seen the blue or red circular multiplayer icons show up on the world map.

You can also reach the castle from the bridge of iniquity bonfire, just cross over the bridge and then there are some spirit springs that can be used to get down between the cliffs

If you fight the golem to the northwest of the castle, you'll get ambushed by Maleigh Marais. Upon defeating them you'll get a rapier, a helmet, and a robe that reveal some lore about how The Shaded Castle came to be affiliated with Malenia.

North west of this castle, there is a golem in the area just outside the castle grounds where the map appears to end.

I've just finished brace of the Haligtree and I'm trying to remember where revenants spawn as enemies. Everyone knows area heal incantations wreck them, but I've never had one equipped when I ran into them. I did know there were four or five that spawn in an area of Elpael so I had the lord's heal incantation ready for them and it worked far better than I was expecting. A small pool of smoke on the floor gives away where they will spawn, sneak close then stand up to trigger the spawn and start casting lord's heal so that the revenant is caught in the AoE as soon as it appears. The first cast will f**k it up enough to stagger it for a critical hit, if you can't get to the orange spot on its head in time and if you can afford the FP a scond cast will kill it before it can land one hit never mind stun-lock slap you to death. I only used lord's heal because those particular revenats were bound to have a large health pool.

Black knife set for stealth? black knife bollocks more like. Just before the lift to Elmer there are two dogs and a cleanrot knight guarding the lift. Kill the page and if you are lucky enough to attract the knights attention use the mimics veil to transform into a statue or whatever then as the knight starts to patrol the area around the lift just move, in statue form past the dogs just don't be to obvious and move right in front of the knight. It works better than soft cotton or crepus's veil or whatever.

I think there's a puzzle no one has figured out yet here. The main tower is substantially taller than the inside of the boss room. Check out the 4 walls n,s,e,w in the elevator shaft going up to the statue corridor and boss. Then the statues hands high, low, mid; begging; holding knowledge. Then the statues in the walls by the painting correlate to the candelabras on the tables if you count the fireplace as the center candle.

It's like it's trying to tell me something...

                                    • Damn...who thought of this area? It looksso cool from a distance but...am i really supposed to fight all these enemies? A dann poison swamp? A poison swamp that slows me down? Dog ganks? Revenants? Those guys on horses are dangerous man. What even is the lore behind this s h i t hole? Cleanrot Knights? Dont they belong to Miquella? And or Malenia? What are these depraved perfumers doing there? And then all these annoying cursed enemies alongside those walking corpses positioned to ambush you. That Area is straight outta Dark Souls 2. Atleast the Boss was unique. Oh wait...

There used to be a sniping spot on the rooftop before the bridge where you could get rid of the Cleanrot knight safely from a distance.
But they patched in a wall at some point...

The statues. The only other place we see anything even *remotely* similar to this is the petrified screaming weirdos in the Eternal Cities. Is there some kind of connection?

has anyone been able to surmise the lore connection between this place and malenia? all i could surmise from the ghost was that allying with her somehow led to its downfall at the hands of elemer. as a dungeon, it feels like a warmup for the haligtree, with the poison zombies and cleanrot knights running around, which i think is pretty awesome design-wise.

                                                • Anonymous

So this area is almost fully within the Gelmir map fragment, but technically it's Altus Plateau considering the music, skybox, and foliage are all Altus.

It also has a quest item for Milicent and she's in Altus when you're supposed to give it to her.

I'm having some problems with this dungeon, more than I had in Raya Lucaria Academy and that's a legacy dungeon, I just lost sixty plus thousand runes to to that absolute c**t of an enemy the Royal Revenant in the garden near the second site of grace, I sprinted to the ladder but it's poison cloud made me fall off and it just got slap happy and stun-locked me to death.

                                                        • Anonymous

I was methodically working through the outer walls and courtyards thinking, "Hey, this is kinda cool. Some ambushes, but stuff I've learned to handle." Then I got to the Revenant. You know, the one you can't target from a distance? The one that teleports all over and poisons and pummels you from behind while you're still casting at where he was? So I reverted to standard From tactics. Just run past everything, drill the Boss a new one and be on my way.
This game could be so much more than that.

He will still use a spectral sword attack, but its like a sweeping slash that's easy to dodge once you figure it out, unlike the twisting sword one. You can sneak in an attack or two after most of his attacks, and if you have enough stance damage you can stun lock him for a little while, especially if he's about to use the grab, I dual wielded rapiers and it did the trick, he's weak to thrust damage.

                                                                              • Anonymous

He tells you he “made a mistake” and gives you an item that he wants you to take to Tanith. It’s one of those clicky things Flamenco Dancers use, “Dancers Castanets.” The item description says something about “truly passionate dance involves no seduction, but merely a dignified beauty.”

Talk to him again and he says something like “now I can rest easy” and appears to “die” or pass out, but considering it’s Patches and you don’t get any Runes, this seems pretty fishy.

So far that’s all I’ve got.
