"We plan to deliver this to Playstation 4 / PlayStation 5 / Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S / Steam, just as the main title. Details will be a bit further down the line, but please look forward to it. Thank you for your continued support of Elden Ring"

What to expect from the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion

Given FromSoftware's previous releases and the fact that the expansion is being announced more than a year after Elden Ring's official launch, we speculate that this content is a fully fledged expansion meant to add significant content to the game.

Unlike the Colosseum Update, which featured content that had already been hinted at with the base game, the Shadows of the Erdtree expansion should feature entire new areas, weapons, equipment, bosses and discoveries. The zone features on the image for the game is already different than any available in-game at the moment, and it is likely to expand on the Lore and background of the world.

The expansion features its own "mini logo" which is often a signal for a large content expansion, but the main driving force behind the content size speculation is the amount of time that it has taken FromSoftware to reveal that the content is in the works. We estimate that they must have been working on this for some time, announcing development in Feb 2023, and expect a launch date to be revealed around Q2 with release date for Q3 or Q4 2023.

Speculations on Shadow of the Erdtree

The upcoming expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, released feature art that showcases a Torrent-like horse being ridden by an unknown character, possibly Miquella or Queen Marika. The character is navigating an expansive field filled with what appears to be an abundance of harvestable wheat. The prevailing speculation is that the character riding the Torrent-like horse is more likely to be Miquella, not only because such character is surrounded by abundance, but also because such character's hairstyle is exactly the same as that of Miquella as shown in the opening cinematics.

The Erdtree featured in the cover art is bleeding Gold, which may also mean that this is a post-destruction story that happens after the Endings of the game. Zooming into the image seems to show ashes coming down from the tree branches, so it may both be a post-burning scenario, or pre-breaking scenario when the Golden Order was first corrupted. The bleeding Erdtree seems to be strangled by another twisted tree - some speculated that this twisted tree is an extension of Godwyn's roots. The sky above the two trees is sunless - has an eclipse befallen the Lands Between?

We can also see ethereal structures on the field - could this be the ghostly tombs of the Haligtree soldiers who sacrificed themselves in a flash to guide Miquella's return?

Content-wise, an Elden Ring expansion would likely feature a considerable amount of content, and given the base size of the game we would expect to see a completely new map covering about 1/3 of the area of the base game. Given previous Artorias of the Abyss and The Old Hunters expansions for other FromSoftware games, you can probably rely on seeing:

  • New Weapons
  • New Armor
  • New NPCs & Questlines
  • New Locations
  • New Items, Consumables, Materials
  • New Bosses & Enemies
  • Possibly new Effects / Magic types

All new content will be added to this page as it is revealed, and our guides and pages will be here to help you get through the content.

i want to say a new theory about this dlc that no one donot notice about it.
i found the dlc map in elden ring. it is weird but can be true.
i want everone to go to the location of the castle sol and after you kill the boss and go upward you see a ghose that saying about miquella and if you see forward of the ghost you can see a tree that similar to the picture of this dlc.
maybe you should thinking that this tree is like that miquella erdtree but if you point some hitpoint on the map of it you ill see that this hint point is far away from you.
another weird about this is that you can see this tree that look like the tree of the picture of shadow of the tree on the above of the castle sol and if you start to see on the botton of the castle you cannot see.
and the last important thing is that in the snow regine, there is a huge and maasive land that you see and you cannot go there
everthing is posible this dlc take place in the botton of snow regine of eledn ring and the castle of malenia is on there
thanks a lot for read this message.
      good luck

I know they've never done anything like this, but it'd be cool if you had to be in New Game+ to start the dlc and there were certain changes depending on the last ending you got. Or adding a new ending would be a cool different direction as well.

Please just give us some more frenzy incantations/AoWs.

I want to hear more voices in my head when i’m bullying the poise Goobers in PvP

What we'll get: Some boss with the HP and defenses of Midir, the attack frequency of Malenia, and using Sleep status effect on hit, as a constant aura around it, and clouds of it thrown all around the arena like Mohg does with bloodflame in his second phase. And probably like 3 different gank bosses.

i hope this dlc has a more invigorating fight than the main game, something exciting like high king wolnir

Hopefully they are doing more with death blight and adding more death blight spells and weapons cause seriously death blight is so underrated there's only 3 death blight things. 1 spell 1 incantation 1 weapon. (Staff doesn't count really) you we could at least get the power of those death frogs that would be cool. We jump up and spit death blight at the floor like they do. Like c'mon guys help a tarnished out make a death blight weapon for every category from daggers all the way to bows. Even if it's just one of each to type we would gracefully appreciate it. Who's with me? POWER OF DEATH BLIGHT

as we step into the final boss area, we are greeted with a familiar scene: the cave of knowledge, more specific the stranded graveyard. but it's empty, that's strange, so we wander forth. one, two, three steps, then rumbling, falling rocks as the cave breaks open revealing rays of light from the erdtree and golden fields of wheat. as we try to get back at our feet a even brigther ray descends from the crown of the erdtree, it get's brigther and brighter until we are fully blinded. after a few seconds the lights dimmens a bit, slowly opening our eyes, we see a godly shilouette towering before us. In this moment self doubt and fear run trough our body. We thought he is dead, but it was all a mere game for him. now he is here too finish what was started a long time ago. NOTHING CAN STOP THE SOLDIER OF GODRICK

The game is massive enough. What do I want for the DLC? Prop hunt mode and a post-game peaceful photography mode, so I can take a nice picture of Atlus without getting ganked by magic poison ivy, giant flammenwerfer lizard, or melted abomination.

                      • gusy i just played it and the best part is right at the end when miquella grabs your hand and says "thanks for helping me build a new place for people to fight. i think i'll call this place the elden ring. the shadow of the erdtree is also nice because peolpe can fight int he shade."
and then george r.r. martin comes out and says "i'm sorry about the ending of the game of thrones show."

All I want is a merchant that sells crafting materials. I don't even care if it's at the end of the dlc at the end of the game, hell you could throw in having to collext x number of each one before it can be bought and I'd still be happy. Farming for all this **** is not fun, it's never been in souls but it's the worst it ever has been in ER to the point it feels like a full time job trying to have enough materials to actually use a perfume build for any length of time.

Doesn't the game feel too young, and this feel too soon, for such a massive expansion? The concerns are distorting the existing game that fans fell in love with.

I bet this where I'll finally get that fight with Glaive Master Holdir I was told do much about back in 2019.

I really want a boss rematch mode in this DLC like Hollow Knight with new rewards along with revamped bosses like Inner Maliketh ,Inner Godrick ,Inner Malenia similar to Inner Genichiro from Sekiro or Pure Vessel from Hollow Knight.
Elden Ring is just too long to replay unlike Dark Souls and it also makes the player use multiple Builds in one playthrough unlike Dark Souls where you can play the whole game with one build and restart the game ,make a new build and fight the bosses again.

Infact i believe Sekiro would be a worse game if it did get a really good DLC but no boss remath mode.

wait a minute, you people are turning into the exact kind of gamers the big wigs are forming you into, late 2023? since when are you so impatient? we used to wait years for a good product because we wanted it to be good, this game could entirely change from this expansion but your satisfied with an extra area when even the game devs themselves are not? please, if you need some instant gratification, go pay a microtransaction, do not pray that the things you love fall to greed, play BG3, I have heard amazing things about it, or across the obelisk if you like rogue likes, or heck go catch up on one piece or berserk since they are back in production, but for everything holy left on this earth, do not let big media producers have an actual reason to blame you for their awful products because that is their strategy, all I see here is it working. for miyazaki sake they just announced it, do you think they were making this since the game was released?

We need continuous passive fp regeneration items. And give us rot armament sorcery to coat our weapons in rot

Keep limited items limited, please. It's no fun when you can just get things whenever. Where's the thought? Where's the strategy? Maybe unlimited Larval Tears for PVP but for PVE everything is fine.

At the end of the DLC, in Miquellas own words: "Thank you Tarnished for helping me give Godwyn a proper death and a resting peace at last. But you did kill my sister... so now I must destroy you!"

MORE SPELL SLOTS, I BEG YOU!!! There are so many cool spells and some of them stupidly take more than one slot. Malenias Flower takes THREE?!?! That's

Please make more Tree Avatars and Tree Spirits. It is the most annoying complaint about the game. I want those people to suffer. There are a lot of Trees. You're gonna see a lot of Spirits!!!

I sincerely hope we visit the past. Even if it's just by entering Miquellas dream and seeing his memories. Sure it'd be great to see beings like Radahn in his prime. However, I'd like to see a clean, non-destoyed, Temple of Manus Celes (Rannis Church however you spell it). That place is GORGEOUS. But it's in shambles.

The image honesty looks like miquella looking at erdtree getting broken by godwyn the goldens tree (from where roots turned itselfs into a tree) and is either breaking it or maybe absorbing its power

                                                  • Anonymous

I would love to see a Sen’s Fortress type location in this DLC, hasn’t really been attempted since DS but it was such a fun concept as a devious obstacle course area. Put it within the Forge of the Giants with some serious Mount Doom vibes. Perhaps that’s how we can finally give Hewg his wish for a godslaying weapon. Not convinced any present weapon actually “counts” for that title, even though most all the weapons conceivably can kill gods. Been awhile since I played though so rusty on the lore.

                                                    • Anonymous

I hope we can get married again ala DS3 and get a new ending, where we get divorced have have to fight our other half and end up maiden less again. Going full circle.

                                                      • Anonymous

There is no way in heck that this figure is anyone other then Miquella. Same hair from the into art with Mogh. Same clothes from the statues near the Haligtree. Their return fits with existing lore. It's him.

                                                        • Anonymous

I see they're going for the whole "sleep is the brother of death" a la Greek mythology. Since, Miquella also being St Trina, is heavily associated with sleep, whereas Godwyn is associated with death. Well, a 'fake' not 'proper' death anyway, since natural death was removed from the world by Marika. Miquella is defo up to something, being smart and powerful, I think he's in some dreamworld looking for answers or a solution to stuff etc. perhaps he can meet his brother there while he's in Trina form? There's lore in base game to suggest Miq is trying to give Godwyn his soul back...

                                                          • Anonymous

I just had a *terrible* idea.
What if they make it so you can only access the DLC on NG+7 or higher?
                                                            To ensure the highest difficulty.
                                                            That would be very funny.

I'd really love some better blood magic. Blood claws are cool but only work at extremely close range. Bloodboon is also cool but does very little. Ive never used the blood flies because i cant find it, but even if it's amazing, that's only one good spell. As for the bloodthorn sorceries, they suck all around.

                                                              • Anonymous

So, from what we see on the teaser and from current potentially unfinished lore, new DLC bosses / NPC could be:
                                                                - Godwyn, Prince of Death. That black tree around Erdtree has likely grown from him and he could either awaken in Deeproot Depths or we get to meet / fight him in a dream like Fortissax.
                                                                - Miquella. He is likely the person riding Torrent and his story is not finished. Depending on when we meet him in story, he could be a NPC (if we didn't kill Malenia & Radagon yet) or a boss / enemy if we already completed base game and did that.
                                                                - Melina. Even though she sacrificed herself, she could survive, just like Three Fingers affected protagonist does. After all, quickly after the events in GF character is transported to other location, so we can't be sure she actually dies. She is also an enemy of our character in one of cases (Frenzied Flame ending) and has suspicious backround and possible connections to Gloam-Eyed Queen (another part of lore that was not covered much yet).

                                                                • Anonymous

So... where do yall think the entrance will be? The Cocoon of the Empyrean? Roundtable Hold? I have a feeling it wont be in an area where you can normally use Torrent, and also somewhere hard to miss. But given that the art does show Torrent, maybe im 100% wrong and the spectral steed is the key to crossing into the DLC, as it is perhaps a path he is uniquely suited to travel. OK, so I guess you summon Torrent at the Cocoon of the Empyrean and that gives you a cutscene. What do you think?

                                                                  • Anonymous

I just read that a financial report for their current fiscal year has been released and that Shadow of the Erd Tree isn't included (instead, it's listed as being ″medium to long term direction″).

Their fiscal year ends on March 31st, 2024, so that means the earliest possible release date the DLC could have would be April 2024.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Because they always show up Hollow!

Why did the Dark Souls 3 player make a terrible cook?
They kept using their Estus Flask for soup!

How do Dark Souls 3 players stay fit?
By doing endless "roll" exercises to dodge attacks!

Why did the Dark Souls 3 player get a job at the library?
They heard it had the best lore!

Why was the Dark Souls 3 player a terrible gardener?
They kept trying to summon help for weed removal!

What do you call a Dark Souls 3 player who finally finished the game?
                                                                              A well-rested soul!

What did the Dark Souls 3 player say when they lost their way in the Catacombs of Carthus?
"I guess I'll have to bonfire my way out!"

                                                                              • Anonymous

Since this is probably going to take place in Miquella's dream world, I hope we'll be able to talk to some version of Radagon and or Marika like how we can talk to Vendrick in DS2. Miquella was pretty close to Radagon as we can tell from the ring incantations so there might be a version of him in there.

                                                                                • Anonymous

It would be cool to have Ringed City levels of difficulty, with an amazing final boss to top it all off (Although nothing will top Gael and that whole DLC entirely)

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I liked the part where Godwin used the power of friendship and TRIPLE BOSS FIGHTS us to high hell with Miquella and Fortissax :)

                                                                                    • Anonymous

I thought about this scenary for a while and I feel like this DLC is gonna be something about a Miquella - Godwin war. That tree in the background seems to be leaking something that looks like death blight rather than gold. And we know Godwin was buried below the roots of the Erdtree and his body started creating and spreading death root across the realm. And now with the Elden Beast dead there's nothing stopping the deathroot from spreading even further and plunging the world into darkness (something similar can be seen in the age of the duskborn cinematic). Maybe we'll get to choose who are we going to fight for and get some new endings. What y'all think?

I have no ideas for what i want out of this DLC. The only thing i hope for is that we dont have to "end" Miquella. I want to know more about him and "ending" a child (even a demigod in a childs body) is an absolute thumbs down from me. No Bueno.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

It's said that the crucible before the age of the erdtree was numerous sprouts emerging from the same stump, struggling over control until the fittest tree was the last to survive. This could be a look into the past, where two trees are fighting for dominance, and I wasn't sure the erdtree had any sap left by our time. On the other hand, since the center tree is straight, like the erdtree, and the second one is hunched, like the haligtree, supporting that it could be Miquella's dream of his tree snuffing out the fallen erdtree, or maybe even supporting its dying weight?
Of course, I can't say much referring to the landscape that doesn't even look familiar to where the erdtree is located, or the horse in the room.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I think since the gravestones are shaded that represents the real world but everything else is Miquellas dream except for the Erdtree which is the center. And reaching the Erdtree has her wake up.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Playing DLCs on NG+ can be a difficult and frustrating in any Soulsborne game for any fan! I hope this saved some headaches.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Miquella is cool and all but I'm more excited to get more Godwyn lore/ a boss fight. As the first of Marika's kids he had to be important not to mention incredibly powerful.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

There should really be a good ending for the expansion. But knowing From, the world would probably be worse off at the end of the expansion lol.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Miquella being Torrent's former master could have some lore-shattering, no just straight up plot-shattering implications. It might mean he worked together with Ranni, who orchestrated the death of his "dear brother," and maybe Melina as well. This would be something basically no one had speculated.

Did Miquella plan everything that transpired? Were we doing his bidding all along? Did he see Ranni as the only one capable of removing Outer Gods from the Lands Between? Was that why Malenia fought Radahn? What the hell is even going on in this game's story?

I guess we'll eventually find out. since I expect this expansion to be much more like Old Hunters than Ashes of Ariandel/The Ringed City, where it ties up remaining plot threads rather than introduce something completely new. By the same token, I also expect that we'll find out more about the first wave of Tarnished that returned to the Lands Between, like Vagram, Tragoth or Istvan.

Some really exciting stuff. And I think we'll have a lot of revelations that not many people expect. "Shadow of the Erdtree" certainly is mysterious enough of a title to warrant that hope, it sounds like something very insidious was hidden from us all along.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

The hairstyle matches, the wheat (abundance) matches his great rune, connection with Torrent, connection with Godwyn, bleeding Erdtree means this is not likely to be a prequel (and so Marika is out of the question).

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

How do I end up fighting the same players everytime at sl125 - 165? Oh its because the server only goes to the end of the block. I'm bummed you can summon torrent in the dlc. I'm also still bummed that you can duel wield every weapon and jump. Hopefully the final game 'Patches' is more like demon souls or any dark souls.

I guess it's either like time/dimensional travel with what Dark Souls 3's DLC did, or perhaps it's just an opposite dark reflection of the current lands between (like Yang compared to yin...)?
