Shadow of the Erdtree

shadow of the erdtree elden ring dlc expansion

The Land of Shadow. A place obscured by the Erdtree.
Where the goddess Marika first set foot.

A land purged in an unsung battle.
Set ablaze by Messmer’s flame.

It was to this land that Miquella departed.
Divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage.
Of all things Golden.

And now Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord.

Shadow of the Erdtree is an upcoming expansion for Elden Ring. Announced via twitter by the official Elden Ring account. A Gameplay Trailer released on February 21st 2024.

Pure and radiant, he wields love to shrive clean the hearts of men. There is nothing more terrifying. In that forsaken place, blood must spill. The blood of your fellows, the Erdtree faithful. They were never saints. They just happened to be on the losing side of a war.

Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light? I presume you, too, are keen to know. Just What Kind Miquella is doing here.

Those stripped of the Grace of Gold shall all meet death. In the embrace of Messmer's fiame.

Come, now. Touch the withered arm, and travel to the realm of shadow. I Will not be far behind. May we meet again.

What to expect from the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion

Given FromSoftware's previous releases and the fact that the expansion is being announced more than a year after Elden Ring's official launch, we speculate that this content is a fully-fledged expansion meant to add significant content to the game.

Unlike the Colosseum Update, which featured content that had already been hinted at with the base game, the Shadows of the Erdtree expansion should feature entire new areas, weapons, equipment, bosses, and discoveries. The zone features on the image for the game are already different than any available in-game at the moment, and it is likely to expand on the Lore and background of the world.

The expansion features its own “mini logo” which is often a signal for a large content expansion, but the main driving force behind the content size speculation is the amount of time that it has taken FromSoftware to reveal that the content is in the works. We initially estimated that they must have been working on this for some time, announcing development in Feb 2023, and expect a launch date to be revealed around Q2 with a release date for Q3 or Q4 2023.

New Story

Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Land of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot. In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps with ulterior motives.

New Location

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree takes players beyond the Lands Between to explore the Land of Shadow, a completely new world from Elden Ring. Players can seamlessly travel back and forth between its vast maps interspersed with diverse situations and meticulous dungeons where menacing enemies roam.

New Content

Shadow of the Erdtree adds new Weapons, equipment, weapon skills and Magic not found in the base game ELDEN RING, along with new EnemiesBoss encounters and plotlines to further increase players' RPG freedom. Take on these threats with the new powers you can acquire.

Expansion Speculations

Miquella is officially said to be awaiting for a promised lord. This, coupled with the official narration that Miquella will be the Tarnished’s guide in the Land of Shadow, suggests that Miquella is planning to ascend to godhood with the Tarnished as the lord or consort. As such, Miquella may be a friendly NPC rather than a foe.

Messmer the Impaler is unlikely to be Miquella. This is supported by the fact that Messmer refers to Miquella in third person when he said that the Tarnished, like others, is keen to know what Miquella is up to in the Land of Shadow. Furthermore, Messmer hunts anyone who is stripped of the Erdtree’s grace, whereas Miquella protects and shelters those who are without grace (such as Albinaurics). The “Mother” that Messmer mentioned is more likely to be Marika, because he asked why Marika chose a Tarnished without the Erdtree’s grace to be a lord (likely referring to the Age of Fracture or similar endings involving the Tarnished becoming a lord or consort to Marika).

A land that was severed from the Lands Between, the Land of Shadow may possibly correspond to the part of the Elden Ring sealed away by Marika to achieve immortality. The tree in the Land of Shadow is covered by shadowy veils and may represent the sealed part of the Erdtree. At the end of the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer, as Miquella raises his hand, the tree radiates with light and is no longer covered by the veils.

The events in the Shadow of Erdtree likely occur in the present timeline and not in the past before the Erdtree came into being. This is because the Land of Shadow is a land that is overshadowed by the Erdtree (i.e., the Erdtree already came into existence).

Towards the end of the trailer, the guiding voice said, “May we meet again”. We know based on official narration that Miquella will be the Tarnished’s guide in the Land of Shadow, but the Tarnished has never met Miquella. This may suggest that Miquella was guiding the Tarnished under the guise of Melina.

Miquella is confirmed to have stripped himself of his flesh. This means that the physical body that Mohg was caring for in Mohgwyn Palace is nothing more than an empty shell. This is why Mohg received no response even with the constant pouring of blood into the body.

One theory posits that Miquella bewitched Mohg to befoul Miquella’s physical body with omen blood so that Miquella can rid himself of his Golden lineage. This may explain Mohg’s unnatural obsession with Miquella witnessed through his own monologues at the Mohgwyn Palace.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Faq

When does Shadow of the Erdtree Come out?

As revealed on the gameplay trailer released on February 21st, Shadow of the Erdtree will release on June 21st, 2024

In Which platforms Shadow of the Erdtree will be available?

Shadow of the Erdtree is releasing on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Do note that Physical retail versions will be only available for PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but not on the previous console generation (Playstation 4 and Xbox One)

How can Shadow of the Erdtree be Accessed?

Both Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood must be defeated to access the DLC when it is released. Players can then enter the DLC by interacting with the withering arm on the cocoon in Mohg's boss arena.

Did George R. R. Martin provide new material for Shadow of the Erdtree?

Confirmed by Miyazaki, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin did not provide new material for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The DLC is based on one part of the mythos the american writer originally created for From Software during the base Elden Ring development.

Is Shadow of the Erdtree a stand alone expansion?

No. Shadow of the Erdtree is a massive addition to the already inmense world of Elden Ring, and it requires players to have the original Elden Ring edition already installed. Players that don't possess the original game, WILL NOT be able to play Shadow of the Erdtree.

Will there be more expansions after Shadow of the Erdtree?

Miyazaki stated there are currently no plans for further DLC, although at the same time he claimed that doesn't mean everything in Elden Ring is complete and that he doesn't want to make any statements which close off future possibilities. From Software has a track record of releasing at least one paid DLC package for their games, but it remains to be seen if a second DLC comes after Shadow of the Erdtree.

What will Shadow of the Erdtree difficulty level be?

According to Miyazaki, the difficulty level is on a similar footing with the end game of the base game. Shadow of the Erdtree will also include a separate, limited to the DLC level up system affecting attack power so that even high level players may face new challenges and may enter or avoid areas based on enemy difficulty. He compared this to Attack Power in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and also stated it can be opted out of entirely for a greater challenge.

My theory: Godwyn was chosen to be the next elden lord so he was assassinated, but unfortunately he was Miquella's secret lover, so Miquella tried to revive him with the eclipse but it couldn't happen due to radahn holding the stars, mquella ordered malenia to kill radahn but SHE FAILED, then miquella gave Torrent to Melina and Spirit Calling Bell to Ranni to help Tanishes kill Radahn, Mogh and Messmer, and he let Mogh destroying his flesh and soul to go to the land of shadow to prepare for Godwyn's resurrection

      • Anonymous

Me making more and more insane theories while waiting for the DLC. I’m on the theory that miquella is actually Guts, be also gwyn, but also mecha godzilla.

        • Anonymous

I'm spitballing here based on 'conjecture, but if it turns out that Mesmer and Ranni were a thing once then I'm going to CRINGE, FromSoft. Imma going to Cringe!

          • Anonymous

PREDICTION: The kick spin move that we saw in the trailer aren't a "feet" weapon class, (as funny as that would be), I think its the AOW for a bone fist type weapon. We'll see in a couple months lads!

            • Anonymous

So the 8 new weapon type are they just going to be great versions of the weapon that are currently without a great category? It's been confirmed that there will be a Great Katana class, does that mean we get a great flail, great Scythe, great twinblades, great whip, great dagger and great claws???
              All that sounds pretty Great.

              • Anonymous

Things I want to see in the DLC:

                * Our player character can fly by aggressively pelvic thrusting the air
                * M1A2 Abrams spirit ash summon
                * John Cena

                • Anonymous

I get Mohg, but why Radahn? Do we need access to Nokron? Or do we have to "free the starts" for the land of shadows to open?

                  • Anonymous

I wonder how Miquella would react to players entering the shadow of the Erdtree after killing his sister?
I'm convinced the best way to enjoy the new content is either NG+ or fresh start with a new character. But it does make me think.. Miquella would be reluctant to support a Tarnished becoming Lord is they had killed Malenia.

                    • Anonymous

We kill Radahn. Two stars fall. The second one hits the arena close to us. Opens a passage straight to the Mohgwyn palace. We go there. Kill Mohg. Touch the EGG. DLC time.

                      • Anonymous

to every comment i see about radahn in the DLC: miyazaki stated that you need to kill radahn AND mohg to access the DLC, so there is lore implications projected at the very least.

                        • Anonymous

Are the new Weapons only coming to the dlc or ar they available in the normal elden ring too? I want to start a new game with the new weapons...

                          • Anonymous

I kind of wish the entrance to the dlc was closer to the beginning like the old hunters in bloodborne. That way once completed ng you could reach it faster to replay it.

                            • Anonymous

So this new attack power system that will be implemented within the DLC leaves me perplexed. Does this mean the new power system will affect only the weapons found within the DLC or all weapons?

                              • Anonymous

I’m calling it now, miquella is a villain, judging mainly from the fact that he is described as “terrifying” and we all know that Miyazaki loves to take inspiration from berserk, and miquella does bare some resemblance to giffith. Not to mention miquellas power does make it sort of reliable since he could simply make everyone love him and ignore everything bad miquella could of done, but that’s just speculation.

                                • Anonymous

With all the collectors edition features I'm guessing this is the only DLC we are getting? I mean this is prob the longest we had to wait for a fromsoft game dlc to come out.

                                  • Anonymous

Can’t wait to go to the DLC with full bull goat, morgott rune, erdtree blessing, HP talisman, dragon great shield, and max vigor only to get two shot by everything.

                                    • Anonymous

I'm very interested in how this DLC presents its story to us as we explore these shadowy lands. I've heard quite a diverse speculation on how Miquella will be introduced to us, but I have my own theory. I believe that early on (about 1/3rd of the way through the DLC), Miquella will be presented unceremoniously next to a site of grace, as a suprise to the player, and infrom us of his mission and requirements in these lands, including places to visit, puzzles to solve and bosses to kill. Miquella would essentially be acting in place of the role Melina took. As for what his mission is, that's for you maggots to sort out.

NOW you may cue your wild theories.

                                      • Anonymous

Once I had a dream that it would come out march 24th, then I check and found out it was still June 21…:’(

                                        • I really wonder if we will find more about Godwyn in this DLC.

He's the most interesting character outside the bosses and npcs we have met.

He's my most anticipated boss we could have fought in the future, Miquella needs our helping hand from what we saw and I believe it's something related to either Malenia's and his curse, his yet unknown plan or Godwyn, maybe somehow his soul have traveled to the Land of Shadow (Which is technicaly impossible but who knows that Miyazaki has prepared)

                                          • Anonymous

Give us godwyn(atleast more lore about him)let us see him fight, like his father using his hand to hand combat.also is messmer the actual guy who hug Miquella and malenia on the haligtree statues?

                                            • Anonymous

Someone knows that if I start a character now, then later I can play the DLC with it or not? I have to wait until it's release, and only then start a fresh character?

                                              • Anonymous

There's a whole lot of St Trina's Lilly visible in some shots. The only places in game that have that much are the ruins where you find the sword of St. Trina and the end of Latenna's questline. Miquella's body appears to be in some sort of deep sleep rather than lifeless, and we now know he divested himself of his flesh. Perhaps his plan involved protecting his physical body at the Haligtree while he conducted his part of whatever his plot is from the lands of shadow. Consider all that with the notion that the lands of shadow are the source of St Trina's Lily, which they appear to be, and all the sleep themes associated with st Trina, we can conclude that whatever Miquella is achieving must involve putting creatures in the lands between into a deep sleep like his own. Possibly so he can separate them from their own physical bodies to be used in the lands of shadow.

Concerning the shadow tree: it's hard to tell if the growth in the trailer is in front of the Erdtree or engulfing it. It appears to be blocking the Erdtree's light with a physical veil of shadow it suspends like a canopy. It makes me wonder if the lands of shadow exist in a physically separated place where the shadow tree is creating a Mr Burns-type blocking device; or if they overlap the lands between in a hidden plane of some kind.

Finally, what about the opening line? Welding love to shrive (hear a confession and absolve it) clean the hearts of men is a terrifying thing according to the speaker. We know Miquella is beloved by many people for many reasons (think of the albinaurics). Could he be deceiving some or all of his supporters to serve himself?

The rumour going around the internet is that the poison swamp in the new DLC is going to be shaped like a foot to incorporate Miyazaki's 2 favourite things

                                                  • Anonymous

I think we can play DLC after finishing the game and beating Elden Beast but I think we have to start over the game to NG+.
So let's start the grind until lvl713 and die from the first mosquito we meet in DLC xD

I’mma make a new character so I can experience the DLC better….*looks at the final dialogue* *vietmohg flashback*.

Nevermind, I’ll just use my overpowered character instead.

Honestly it looks amazing maybe even better than the main game in some parts but I hope it'll have more frenzied and sleep stuff.

                                                          • I think a Death bird duo fight could be cool, one could be primarily ranged while the other is primarily melee but they won't have a goofy shared hp pool like Godskin Duo

It would be interesting to have some Ash of Wars specific to power stance / dual wielding weapons. Something that incorporates both weapons. Maybe that would end up OP so maybe not.

                                                                  I'm waiting so long...
                                                                  I'm waiting so long...
                                                                  I'm waiting...

                                                                  • Anonymous

I for one would love to see more endgame content in the DLC. After you defeat Elden Beast there isn't much to do besides invasions or the colosseums. Sure there's NG+ but what if I want to stay in my current world and not have to start the story over? Things they could add:

                                                                    * A boss rush mode, maybe with a handful of new unique bosses, you can play for special rankings. (Hollow Knight and Sekiro are examples of how this could be done)
                                                                    * Refight defeated bosses at their grace sites with special rules (e.g. hitless, no talismans, no flasks, etc.) with special rankings based on how many rules are completed (Again, Hollow Knight nailed this)
                                                                    * A challenge dungeon with endless randomly generated levels of random mobs that get stronger the farther you progress with unique rewards. (Think Bloodborne's chalice dungeons crossed with Devil May Cry's bloody palace.)
                                                                    * A handful of secret superbosses that can only be fought after defeating the Elden Beast and all the Shardbearers. Maybe some vassals of other Outer Gods? (Think the dark aeons/Penance in Final Fantasy X)

                                                                    • Anonymous

The final boss of the DLC is just going to be malenia but the size and HP pool of fire giant, has elden stars and runs away like elden beast, is going to have rennala shield in which you have to kill a death rite bird while malenia is attacking you, on top of the two HP bars in the normal malenia it will have a third phase where it splits into two and every time one of them hit you both malenias will heal, also now each of them will have it's own shield but now you have too kill a Putrid Tree Spirit. also every attack from malenia will rot you in one hit. it also has hit boxes that makes the worst hit box in dark souls 2 look perfect. and finally after beating the two malenia you have too do a platforming section in which you die you will have to redo the fight.

                                                                      • You know, I was making a list about what Demi-gods where good and evil and what not, and I place rykard, Mohg, ranni as evil, and malenia, radahn, godwyn and miquella as good, ( and morgott being grey). Then I though “wait miquella has the power to make people fall in love with him, maybe just maybe, miquella is actually super evil but using his power is making everyone fall in love and make them think he is pure hearted, the used Mohg to raise him to godhood while framing Mohg for kidnapping him” though is this just a theory I made up, I really have no major reason to support this but I’ll like to know what you think

                                                                        • Anonymous

DLC won't come out this month. In December 2023, they said the DLC has a long way to go, but they are working hard. Even yesterday, Kadokawa - FromSoftware’s parent company, said that they are still working hard on DLC and don't have an announced date, which means the trailer will be in development for another 10 months or until 2025.

                                                                          • Anonymous

At this point, I’m thinking we’re not looking at a DLC here but a full fledged sequel. Bloodborne was released in March with the Old Hunters releasing in Nov of the same year. DS3 was released in April with Ashes of Ariandel releasing in October of same year and Ringed City releasing March of the next year. With the assumption development began on Shadow of the Erdtree either during or right after the release of the main game, and even with the expectation the DLC will be much larger than FromSoft’s previous, an over two year development at this point is ridiculous. I’m not disappointed by this prospect, of course, as a sequel would be amazing. But I think we’re looking at some significant waiting here. Thoughts?

                                                                            • Anonymous

Things I'd like to see added with the DLC (not exhaustive):

                                                                              1) The option for equipped Great Runes to have a toned-down version of their abilities that don't require a Rune Arc and that can also function in PvP

                                                                              2) The ability to equip multiple ashes of war to a single weapon (e.g. have them take up an equip slot in place of a second or third weapon)

                                                                              3) Non-elemental ashes of war take on special properties based on active buffs (Storm Blade becoming blasts of fire if a Fire Grease is active, etc.)

                                                                              4) A non-staff sorcery catalyst like a ring or something that scales with Dex/Int to counterpart the Clawmark Seal along with its own unique school of sorceries (would also look hella rad to fire off a Comet Azur from your hand like a Kamehameha)

                                                                              5) Radiant quests to earn runes, rare crafting materials, Rune Arcs etc. (e.g. recusant quests to slay random NPC duelists, hunt down and slay random powerful mobs, chase down and fight an NPC on horseback, find random spots on the world map, etc.)

                                                                              6) The option to re-fight defeated bosses for funsies at their Site of Grace like you can do in Sekiro

                                                                              7) Joinable cults/covenants associated with different schools of magic/weaponry that boost their effectiveness (with special PvP rewards like with covenants in previous games?)

                                                                              8) The option to add a third tear to your Physick in exchange for a halved duration or something

                                                                              9) Time travel back to Farum Azula when it wasn't a floating ruin

                                                                              10) Fight a literal outer god in the form of a three phase super-boss (I like pain)

                                                                              • Anonymous

It was supposed to release yesterday...WHERE IS IT FROMSOFT. I'm predicting a trailer February 28th since its the games release date and when the DLC was announced last year.

                                                                                • Anonymous

I hope the entering is similar to how ds3 and bb did it. Make it accesible early but higher scaling and a warning in the beginning(like ashes if ariandel).

                                                                                  • Anonymous
