One of the glintstone sorceries of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

Fires twin projectiles that form a spiral as they travel. This sorcery can be cast repeatedly and while in motion.
Charging enhances potency.

Elden Ring Shard Spiral Guide

  • Glintstone Sorcery
  • Stamina Cost: 28
  • Deals magic damage
  • The primary draw of this sorcery is its use against larger targets. When cast, the spiraling pair of magic bolts will slowly fly toward their target and then continue to fly through them instead of exploding on contact. The magic bolts will continue to deal damage as they fly through the target until they reach their maximum range, at which point the bolts expire. As such, this sorcery can do considerably more damage than many other sorceries, provided the magic bolts are allowed to travel through their target as long as possible.
  • Faster cast time (especially when uncharged) and lower FP cost than other high damage sorceries, more equivalent to Great Glintstone Shard in terms of speed and cost
    • The drawback is its slow travel time and moderate damage against smaller enemies
  • NOTE: This Glintstone Sorcery was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows: The Attack Power was Increased.

This spell is awesome vs. big bosses, yes. But not only that, it's also pretty good vs. small, agile bosses too. I just slaughtered Malenia with it first try, it even staggers her out of the Waterfowl Dance, this thing is the real sh*t!!

      • Anonymous

After trying the spell, I use almost nothing else. It is great against every enemy. Even the annoying bastards like huge hounds, huge crows, lobsters etc. if the enemy doesn't see you, you can send 3-4 spirals before it even notices you (thanks to slow projectile speed). It is usually enough to bring down anyone.
The smallest enemies are hit at list twice, dealing over 1k dmg with 80 int using +10 carian regal scepter. Larger enemies get 2-2,5k dmg per shot. It is amazing considering just 14 FP cost.
The spell is also perfect vs hostile npcs.
        10/10 in my personal rating!

IMHO it's on par with slicer and night comet. Even smaller enemies are getting obliterated - usually around 10% less damage than night comet. It's cheap, can be charged, has big projectile, goes through enemies and has good tracking.

The only downside is the projectile speed which is rarely an issue due to dumb straightforward AI

On ng+7, I had fth and int on 99 and was using the death staff. With all damaging buffs and talismans, I defeated elden beast before it could even run away for the sky attack... its the pest threads of sorceries to say the least.

            • I could not get Meteorite of Astel to work to melt Placidusax after 15-ish tries (and chewing through my lifetime supply of uplifting aromatic). On the flip side, I switched to this beat him on the first try. Just thought I’d share.

How come did I miss this spell from Sellen's questline?! And could one mess Sellen's questline? I can't buy the sorcery now that Sellen is gone once I completed her QL...

                • Anonymous

at ng+7, this is my main dps tool against elden beast. casting 4-5 of these at the right angle without buffs will melt its hp away very fast.

everyone talks about how good this is in pve against large enemies, but this is also an really underrated spell for pvp. it forces a lot of pressure onto opponents, especially charged, and syngerizes great with meele spells and rollcatching. S tier spell for both pve and pvp

If you have entirely too much mana on your hands, firing off shot after shot of this in a single line is a surefire way to make sure anything that doesn't get out of the way will die very quickly. A very welcome piece in the arsenal of any sorcerer with a large mind.

Annihilates large enemies, shreds any quadruped for 2-3 hits, and still deals more damage than cometshard on standard targets while costing 40% less than comet. Comet is still worth carrying for its speed and huge charged damage on standard sized enemies, but people definitely sleep on this one. Also great for enemies that like to jump backwards.

                        • Anonymous

Underrated. I accidentaly used this against a pack of dogs in mohgwyn area and it shredded them. Of course it works best against big creatures, but its still ok otherwise

                          • Alongside Comet Azur, this is one of the best spells in the game.
Getting close and spamming spirals simply erases large and mid-to-large slow-ish bosses (dragons, tree spirits, fire giant, Astel, ect).
Still a a bit situational: you have to get close, you have to have enough stamina to be able to pull off several casts, the boss has to be distracted by the summon and not about to jump away or slam you.
That said, it doesn't work in all cases. E.g. you're gonna get stomped if you try this with hyperaggressive and fast bosses like Maliketh, Malenia, Godfrey.
As with everything - gotta know when to use it.

Sellen's master Azur studied comets and made Comet Azur, so I suppose Sellen made this spell in attempt to create comet of her own. Kinda sweet actually, and very powerful against large bosses.

                              • This is basically the best spell in the game. It works in basically any situation: single target and AOE; far and near targets; normal enemies and bosses, etc. Remember that you can charge it for harder hits. It's carrying me through the games and toughest bosses.

                                • Anonymous

This spell is extremely good against large targets as it keeps on hitting them as it moves. I used it to fight Placidusax and it was so effective that he never even got to teleport a single time, died right on the spot where he starts the fight without even moving. It's quite good against Elden Beast for the same reason.

It's pretty nice against smaller targets too, it will still get multiple hits as it passes through a target and although it doesn't reach the crazy damage it gets against big foes it still has pretty good FP/dmg efficiency since it's fairly cheap at 14 per cast. The main disadvantages are that it doesn't have the best range (not terrible either) and that it moves slowly. Tracking is good, but the slow projectile speed can be a problem.

wait wait wait... was the karalos conspectus's idea to make a new comet literally just to stitch 2 glintstones together? for a bunch of wizards these guys really have low intelligence dont they

                                    • Anonymous

I made it all the way to Elden Beast before I realized that this spell hits multiple times per cast, and is perfect for massive Bosses. This whole time, I'd been relying on the slower Comet Azur to get opening damage on it. Switching to light attacks with the Dark Moon Greatsword, Shard Spiral, and Carian Slicer made the fight significantly easier. Even if Shard Spiral wasn't nearly a one-shot, and most of my damage came from Slicer, it was a VERY helpful tool to get off some damage and then keep moving. If I'd used the same FP to walk around casting Glintstone Pebbles, I'd have to sprint WAY more to catch the Elden Beast. Thanks to the Shard Spiral doing damage WHILE I moved through the Arena, it was way easier to keep close to it, letting me use more Slicers and dodge more Sacred Blade attacks.

decided to an int only playthrough, and this spell hard carries against bigger bosses.evwn elde. beast, who has big magic resist

Spirals in Elden ring are a motif usually associated with the age of dragons and the ancient form of the Erdtree. Dragon lightning spears take the form of spirals, as does the Bolt of Gransax, and old depicitions of the Elden Ring and Elden Stars both feature spiralling light. So maybe their spell took the form of a spiral because the Karalos accidentally tapped into that power instead of the primeval current or something? Great spell but it's a weird one, theming-wise.

                                          • Anonymous

one of the best spell for pve. Basically acts as a magic drill, breaks poise easily, consumes low FP and has fast cast, not to mention it chases enemies. Absolutely destroys large enemies.

                                            • Anonymous

It's quite handy against large and slow enemies, while damaging their poise, even without the auxiliary buffs.

                                              • Anonymous

Everyone says this is mid or trash, this literally shreds larger enemies… I took about 10 tries against fire giant and I use this once and get it first try

                                                • Anonymous

why does this spell just sometimes not track even when locked on, and just pierce through the enemy without turning at all, costing a large loss in potential dps?

                                                  • Anonymous

Melted Dragonlord Placidusax with only this. Makes me feel like I cheated myself a boss fight with Comet Azur with how easy Spiral Shard made it.

                                                    • Anonymous

Very good against Malenia! I sent 3 spirals after her while a friend was staggering and basically dashed into them and would keep eating hits since her poise was so low.

                                                      • Anonymous

This supposedly "failed" version of the Comet ended up as one of my most favourite spells in the game.

                                                        - Better tracking (even if you miss the initial shot, it can still come back around and hit)
                                                        - Decent range (though I still use Loretta's Greatbow for all of my sniping purposes)
                                                        - Slow AF (but, that way you can stack a bunch of them. The enemy's AI will dodge prematurely as well, just like Magic Glintblade)
                                                        - Hit multiple times (great against large-hitbox enemies, such as dragons and gargoyles or groups of small enemies)
                                                        - Decent FP efficiency
                                                        - And yeah, it's annoying in PvP, too

I was getting absolutely wrecked by Elden Beast. Nothing was working: Azur, Comet, Oracle Bubble. Yeah, I don't really know what I'm doing. Figured, what the heck, I'll just die for the 90th time. I would cast over and over, run away, pray, attempt to heal. His health bar dropped like you wouldn't believe. I thought I'd be fighting this dude forever. What a feeling.

                                                          • Anonymous

No one is going to stop you for using any spell, but my personal recommendation is to reserve spells like this and comet azur for when you're really just exasperated with a boss and want to get it over with. I found satisfaction from defeating a boss by learning his moves and timings, and depending on how you like to play you may or may not get that kind of experience from spells that can shred HP bars in seconds. No one should judge anyone for using anything (in PVE at least, since that's what the game is balanced around), I just don't want anyone to miss out on these valuable experiences.

                                                            • Anonymous

So, got hyped for this after reading some of the comments, but it ended up being meh for me. Just doesn't do enough damage. Rather use ancient death rancor, which also tracks, but hits harder and stuns enemies.

                                                              • Anonymous

Maybe THE most slept on pvp spell. The tracking is insane and the long projectiles combined with the slow speed really messed with people. This is pretty much my go-to spam during the opening and whenever I ever get a lot of distance from the enemy. I'll throw out 4 or 5 and unless they turn around and run or have Blood Hound Step, its guaranteed to land a couple hits on roll catches alone. But thats not even the best part about it. If they happen to dodge straight into it, IT WILL LOOP AROUND AND HIT THEM IN THE BACK. I mostly like to duel and I can't tell you how great it is watching white mask ROB scrubs get drilled in the back, usually leaving them with little to no hp, right when they thought it was safe to start spamming L2. TLDR its insane for pvp

                                                                • Anonymous

This is an absolutely fantastic spell. One of the glaringly flaws in playing a caster is that it's often very easy to just strafe most of your spells; the slow projectile speed, incredible tracking, and potential to drill your opponent for multiple frames of damage make it tricky to strafe and hard to ignore, helping you set up other spells or a chance to be aggressive while they're distracted.

                                                                  • Anonymous

When I did this quest, I thought ancient dragon stones were super valuable and rare, and also didn't plan on doing an int build so I sided with Jerren. I regret that so hard now after respeccing to int and learning I missed out on the best spell in the game.

                                                                    • Wasn’t paying attention when summoning either Sellen or Jerren and only saw one summon sign… I thought me and Sellen we’re going to have a fun duel. Little did I know I’d forever kill my love with Jerren… and now I don’t get apparently one of the best spells in the game

                                                                      • Anonymous

Id recommend that you show some restraint using such magic on your first playthrough, because it will just trivialize whatever you fire it at, just like a spirit summon, a well timed shot once per fight would likely suffice. If you really want to delete bosses and not bother to actually fight them the old fashioned satisfying way, youll refrain from using this kind of magic ona very first base NG playthrough.

Funny enough, as someone that doesnt rely on/enjoy spamming EZPZ projectile spells from a relatively safe distance that can kill things so quickly and easily with little effort, learning how strong this spell was, made me opt for Jerren, outside of my initial thought process of how i thought the quest was going with the characters. Obviously Jerren was aware of how determined Sellen was in obtaining super powerful magic, which is literally an alien concept, and Radahn sought to destroy the alien threat by using their own flesh and bone against them, and go even as far as to take the fight to them IN HECKIN SPACE, i couldnt go against a follower and friend of Radahn. But on a second playthrough, this spell will just demolish everything, its practically Soul Stream from DS2.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

The projectile doesn't disappear and does continuous damage as it passes through enemy hitboxes. Enemies like the ulcers and dragons have large bodies that allows the spell to curve around to deal maximum damage. It is in fact stronger than Comet Azur without the FP-0 flask effect.

Absolute boss killer. Hands down the most powerful sorcery that I've used so far. Helped me burn down the twin gargoyles and the godskin duo. This thing is a beast. I wish that there was an improved one like most of the other sorceries seem to have. But I guess that could be gamebreaking...

Against a large opponent like a dragon one cast of this, all hits did about as much damage as 2-3 Glintstone Pebbles. Because of the tracking its hard to gauge range but it seems to be about he same as the Glintstone Pebble, maybe a little less.
