Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Sir Gideon Ofnir easily, as well as boss stats and lore for Sir Gideon Ofnir.
The player originally comes across Gideon Ofnir as an NPC. As a boss, Sir Gideon Ofnir is the Tarnished leader of the Roundtable that uses advanced Sorceries as well as Incantations, some of which he teaches you in exchange for information. He can be found in Leyndell, Ashen Capital, an instance of the Royal Capital which is accessible only after making significant progress in the story.
This is not an optional boss, players must defeat him to advance in Elden Ring. Gideon is a spellcaster and some of the spells he has access to depends on which shardbearers you have defeated or places you've visited and reported to him, or questlines you have completed/not completed before reaching the boss fight. For instance, failing to find and interact with Azur for Sellen's quest gives him access to Comet Azur. Before the fight starts, Gideon makes a rather lengthy speech during which you are free to attack him. He drops the All-Knowing Set and Scepter of the All-Knowing when defeated.
Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Great Enemy bosses can drop unique Spirit Ashes, Weapons, Spells, and other various Items.
Queen Marika has high hopes for us.
That we continue to struggle, unto eternity.

Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing:
- Use the Eternal Darkness spell to redirect nearly all his spells
- Use the Inescapable Frenzy spell to deal major damage during his monologue.
- Alternatively, Frenzied Burst can prove useful due to long range.
- Recommended weapon: Erdtree Greatshield
- Use Spirit Ashes that can quickly close the distance and harass Gideon such as Black Knife Tiche.
- Use heavy jump attacks to disrupt Gideon's more powerful spells as he channels them.
Melee Users
Gideon has access to both Sorceries and Incantations and he can deal a huge amount of damage in a very short time. However, as a magic-focused boss, he is also easily interrupted. His more advanced spells such as Rykard's Rancor and Comet Azur require some channeling and a well-timed heavy jump attack will cause him to plop facedown on the ground, interrupting his cast.
Another weakness of Gideon is that nearly all of his attacks are projectiles that can be blocked by terrain and it just so happens there are several pillars conveniently placed on either side of his chamber. Make good use of these pillars, particularly for the same two spells noted above and you should be able to own this fight.
One attack of note for melee players to watch out for is his Black Flame Ritual which comes out really quickly and can shred HP in mere seconds. Make sure you are dodging out of range of this as soon as you see the black flames.
Magic and Ranged Users
Magic users who are specc'd for the Eternal Darkness spell can near-trivialize this fight. Eternal Darkness creates a void orb that sucks in all projectile-based enemy spells, effectively rendering them useless. This includes his all-powerful Comet Azur beam. Do note that the projectiles can still hit you if you are in their path as they travel towards the void so make sure you are casting Eternal Darkness on one side and moving a few steps away to the side as you pummel Gideon with your own spells.
Eternal Darkness is not a fool-proof plan, however. It has a short duration and you should still be aware of Gideon's most dangerous attacks and use the pillars to your advantage.
Tiche and you combined can stunlock him without bothering with Eternal Darkness. Adula's Moonblade can be effective, or use fast spells to compensate for his tendency to dodge.
For Faith, Madness related spells - most notably Frenzied Burst - are useful.
Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Knowledge Above All | Gideon raises his scepter and places a debuff on himself and the enemy, characterized by a red eye symbol. | This will reduce your magic and holy damage reduction, but also for himself. Make sure to end him quickly. |
Melee attack | Instead of casting debuff, Gideon can postpone it and use his Scepter to swing at player up to 4 times. | Back away or parry. |
Comet | Gideon's most used magic attack, firing off a piercing magic projectile that homes in on targets. He will often use this up to four times in succession. | Easily sidestepped or dodged, just do not underestimate its travel speed. |
Carian Phalanx | Gideon summons several magic blades that hover around him, before shooting towards his target. | Use the pillars to block the blades or sprint to the side in the more open areas of the room. |
Triple Rings of Light | Gideon summons three discs of light that travel outward in a fan formation in front of him and then return after a short delay. | The further out you are, the bigger the gap between each disc. You can use these gaps to evade them at range. At melee range, try to get behind or to the side of Gideon. |
Law of Causality | Gideon stands still and moves his arms in a gesture, summoning a visage of the Elden Ring on his chest. After taking a certain amount of hits, he will retaliate with a golden blast. | The damaging explosion triggers after five hits, and will most likely inflict counter damage when triggered in melee range. Either trigger the explosion at range, or utilize Spirit Ashes and their much higher HP. |
Rykard's Rancor | Gideon summons a flaming skull that homes in on its target and creates a trail of flame as it flies. After a short delay, explosions are released in a cascading fashion along the trail. | Neither the skull nor the trail deal damage so use this to your advantage to plan your evasion. Alternatively, you can use the pillars in the chamber to block the skull. Simply stand so a pillar is between you and Gideon as he casts the spell and the skull will get stuck behind the structure, releasing all explosions behind it. |
Comet Azur | Gideon channels energy into his staff and then releases a powerful beam of magic. | This spell is extremely powerful but has a very obvious telegraph. Wait until the last trails of energy are being sucked into his staff before you dodge. Alternatively, you can use the pillars in the room to block the attack. This spell will only be cast if Sellen's questline is NOT completed prior to burning the Erdtree. |
Black Flame Ritual (uncharged) | Gideon quickly releases pillars of black flame all around him. | Dodge out of range immediately. |
Bloodboon | Gideon will reach into a throws out a spray of bloodflame in a cone formation. This attack applies bleed build up. | This spell has a wind up time and can be countered by staggering Gideon out of it. The short range of the spell also allows the player to quickly outrange it. This spell will only be cast if Gideon is informed of Mohg, Lord of Blood prior to burning the Erdtree. |
Scarlet Aeonia | Gideon will jump into the air and turn into a lotus flower before slamming into the ground creating an explosion of scarlet rot. Likewise, this attack applies scarlet rot build up. | The large wind up time of this attack makes it extremely easy to run away from or roll under as Gideon can not change direction once casting. This spell will only be cast if Gideon is informed of Malenia, Blade of Miquella prior to burning the Erdtree. |
: Attack can be parried : Attack can be spell parried

The scepter that Gideon use is the npc version only which make it diffirent from player scepter, when Gideon activates the Knowledge Above All of his npc version scepter it will only affect the players but himself and while the player version the debuff only last 60s and reduce 10% magic and holy damage negation, the npc version debuff last 180s and reduce 30% negation. Just use Yapped Rune Bear and findout

FS did this guy dirty, it had a really cool idea of becoming more powerful the more bosses you killed, and as a character he is really interesting, but they just made him into a normal NPC opponent no unique music, no unique mechanics outside of the one I already stated. They could of done much more with this character

If you want to make this fight actually fun, you can try killing him with carian retaliation. Normally this fight feels really cheesy, either he cheeses you with infinite stamina and FP spamming spells OR you cheese him with any number of potential strategies. With retaliation, however, it feels really dynamic and cinematic. learning which spells are good for parrying (glintstone comet and rykard's rancor) and which spells you have to dodge (the beam attack and the discs will both hit you through a successful parry) is just really fun IMO. I didn't beat mohg or melania before gideon on the save file I did this but I would expect the blood throw to be easy to parry and the rot lotus to be impossible to parry (and pointless to try since he sits there in recovery frames begging you to hit him anyway). I'm not normally a sword-and-board gamer, but my classic knight cosplay parry build was surprisingly fun for these NPC fights, which are normally a bit annoying, at least for my taste

After dying to him about 30 times I just spammed wave of destruction (ruins greatsword) lmao
Gideon is an npc I wish was involved more in the story. His manipulative tactics and apathetic nature honestly makes for an interesting 'antagonist' of sort. But he ends up just being seen as an 'obstacle' before the Godfrey fight, having little narrative significance.
- Anonymous
I just spammed inescapable frenzy on him until he died. Sometimes all you need to do to defeat a man is to "gently" cradle his face and look deep into his eyes (with the fury of two very close-range suns)

Ah, I knew you'd come. To this wiki page. To rant. To hope for a weapon that functions as a staff and seal. What a sad state of affairs. But alas, no devs wanted to make animations for a staff to cast incantions. Miyazaki has high hopes for us. That we continue to struggle. Unto eternity.

For anyone struggling, I used Stormcaller weapon art on a Katana to stunlock Gideon & build bleed, also used an Albinauric Pot when he got to 50% HP to prevent healing. I'm sure there are more optimal ways but I was RL1.

If you can use inescapable frenzy, use it during the monologue and just keep spamming it after, he can't do anything

Can someone change the trivia to say Finger Seal instead of Sacred Seal? I looked at his hand at the beginning of the fight, and he's holding the Finger Seal. You can even kind of see it in the gallery image (the Finger Seal is the only seal with that kind of metal loop)

This boss is the easiest or hardest boss in elden ring. The very first attempt can be easy because he just stands there like an absolute melon giving some boring speech so you can be aggressive and kill him fairly easily. If you die however, upon re-entering the fog gate he is no longer standing still, he immediately spams spells that can lead to some bad times indeed.
- Anonymous
this boss is so bad. the way it was designed is bad because they made it so easy for the level youre supposed to be that they just made one of the worst bosses in the game because they expect you to win first try. thats why they gave him the monologue

Glass cannon for sure. Huge damage output and can spam attacks, but easy to bully like a little baby with staggers.
I hope whoever designed Gideon's bossfight spends the rest of their days fighting those hands in Caria Manor as RL1. Gideon either oneshots you or you continuously stagger him, only for him to instantly cast the Phalanx and stagger you, and afterwards spam even more well-designed moves. This guy is always a chore to fight, but thank god that Godfrey, the first Chad exists right after Gideon.

I was running a Radahn cosplay build and this dude spammed Scarlet Aeonia 6 times in a row. Truly the All-Knowing.
- Anonymous
No notes here about a patch that no longer allows you to kill him during the monologue. He now has infinite resources and can spam spells/incantations without pause and can use infinite physick flasks to counter melee.
- Anonymous
Giving him the golden barrier (like the one that protects Rya) that won't let you cheese him immediately at the start of the fight and hyper armor/stance breaking mechanic unique for NPCs would have made him much better as a boss
I got the idea Gideon was jealous of the player's success. His envy is what drove him to stand in our way. So be it, Jedi.

Man, it baffles me to think Gideon thought he had a chance against a Tarnished who has killed everyone that stood in his/her way, and Gideon knew, and yet still thought he had a chance, smh...

I knew i will use Latenna for this fight because of his sins but i don't know what to wear myself. I settle for Ensha set and use fist because Ensha also use that. With limited range it's harder than it should be and shamefully i die once. More satisfying when i finally did it.

That is a bold face lie about him not using his scepter in combat. He most certainly will beat the all knowing crap out of you with his melee attacks given the chance. I know it's a rare occurrence, but I went in there expecting that not to happen and took a few slaps. My inevitable display of arrogance...

Died to him once on my current playthrough. Such shame I cannot bear.

People have been using Gideon's dialog from this fight to suggest that Marika was trying to create a forever war, but Gideon is just being facetious here. Marika's plan was to kill the Elden Beast, which is something Gideon doesn't think it's possible. To him, this was a fact he was willing to die for

Thrusting Sword Ash of War is very helpful. It hits far and can do damage of 500. Even with the zero investments into Mind you can get 16 hits (with a talisman the FP cost is 5). So you either hit him and get 500 of damage or you make him jump. So he is busy and does not cast.

Flame of the Fell God
Aspects of the Crucible: Horn
Black Flame Tornado
Inescapable Frenzy
Because he is humanoid, he gets thrown up in the air by ALL (except Frenzy, but with Frenzy you CAN still stun lock him) of these, allowing you to take that time and charge up another one.
Instant win.
- Anonymous
If you want to attack him during the monologue, make sure to wait until he says "lord", if you attack him after that, he aggros much slower and is guaranteed to open up with casting his debuff spell, giving you opportunity to get in even more damage. If you attack him before that point during his monologue, he will just backstep or roll away and instantly blast you with his magic.
- Anonymous
A definition of one-trick pony. Keep close and stagger him to hell with attacks - and he will die quickly without being able to do anything.
But oh boy, if you don't do that - you will get absolutely spammed to hell. He has infinite FP, maxed casting time and insane damage. Basically has 99 in Dex, Int, Fth and Arcane.
- Anonymous
Tip for INT players fighting him legit, Law of Regression actually negates his "Knowledge Above All" debuff that normally reduces your magic & holy resistance, which turned what was usually a 2 hit KO from his comets into a 3-shot, along with reducing the damage of many of his other spells as well. He will try to cast the debuff again throughout the fight, however with a high poise damage weapon you can usually knock him out of the casting animation. Overall makes the fight much more manageable
- Anonymous
He deserved a lot more. He only lasted 8 seconds against me. Wouldn't even call it a boss fight.

as a melee player this guy is insane in 1.08, infinite spells spamming, you don't even have a second between casts. If you summon archers he will roll and cast infinitely too.. get close to him and you will be obliterated with the explosion, or those damn rings that have huge AoE, or magic knives, or 5 in a row beams... impossible to dodge.
I didn't struggle much with any boss in the entire game but this one is the first one that I said "totally unfair and unbalanced"
- Anonymous
Uh, I didn't tell him about Malenia or Mohg yet he has Scarlet Aeonia and Bloodboon. So that's straight up misinformation.

love how one of the easiest bosses normally is a run killer for some challenge runs
It doesn't matter if you tell him about defeating Mohg and/or Malenia, - he will still use their spells even if not told.
