Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Sir Gideon Ofnir easily, as well as boss stats and lore for Sir Gideon Ofnir.

The player originally comes across Gideon Ofnir as an NPC. As a boss, Sir Gideon Ofnir is the Tarnished leader of the Roundtable that uses advanced Sorceries as well as Incantations, some of which he teaches you in exchange for information. He can be found in Leyndell, Ashen Capital, an instance of the Royal Capital which is accessible only after making significant progress in the story.

This is not an optional boss, players must defeat him to advance in Elden Ring. Gideon is a spellcaster and some of the spells he has access to depends on which shardbearers you have defeated or places you've visited and reported to him, or questlines you have completed/not completed before reaching the boss fight. For instance, failing to find and interact with Azur for Sellen's quest gives him access to Comet Azur. Before the fight starts, Gideon makes a rather lengthy speech during which you are free to attack him. He drops the All-Knowing Set and Scepter of the All-Knowing when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Great Enemy bosses can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing:

  • Use the Eternal Darkness spell to redirect nearly all his spells
  • Use the Inescapable Frenzy spell to deal major damage during his monologue.
  • Use Spirit Ashes that can quickly close the distance and harass Gideon such as Black Knife Tiche.
  • Use heavy jump attacks to disrupt Gideon's more powerful spells as he channels them.

Melee Users

Gideon has access to both Sorceries and Incantations and he can deal a huge amount of damage in a very short time. However, as a magic-focused boss, he is also easily interrupted. His more advanced spells such as Rykard's Rancor and Comet Azur require some channeling and a well-timed heavy jump attack will cause him to plop facedown on the ground, interrupting his cast.

Another weakness of Gideon is that nearly all of his attacks are projectiles that can be blocked by terrain and it just so happens there are several pillars conveniently placed on either side of his chamber. Make good use of these pillars, particularly for the same two spells noted above and you should be able to own this fight.

One attack of note for melee players to watch out for is his Black Flame Ritual which comes out really quickly and can shred HP in mere seconds. Make sure you are dodging out of range of this as soon as you see the black flames.

Magic and Ranged Users

Magic users who are specc'd for the Eternal Darkness spell can near-trivialize this fight. Eternal Darkness creates a void orb that sucks in all projectile-based enemy spells, effectively rendering them useless. This includes his all-powerful Comet Azur beam. Do note that the projectiles can still hit you if you are in their path as they travel towards the void so make sure you are casting Eternal Darkness on one side and moving a few steps away to the side as you pummel Gideon with your own spells.

Eternal Darkness is not a fool-proof plan, however. It has a short duration and you should still be aware of Gideon's most dangerous attacks and use the pillars to your advantage.

Tiche and you combined can stunlock him without bothering with Eternal Darkness. Adula's Moonblade can be effective, or use fast spells to compensate for his tendency to dodge.

Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Knowledge Above All Gideon raises his scepter and places a debuff on himself and the enemy, characterized by a red eye symbol. This will reduce your magic and holy damage reduction, but also for himself. Make sure to end him quickly.
Comet Gideon's most used magic attack, firing off a piercing magic projectile that homes in on targets. He will often use this up to four times in succession. Easily sidestepped or dodged, just do not underestimate its travel speed.
Carian Phalanx Gideon summons several magic blades that hover around him, before shooting towards his target. Use the pillars to block the blades or sprint to the side in the more open areas of the room.
Triple Rings of Light Gideon summons three discs of light that travel outward in a fan formation in front of him and then return after a short delay. The further out you are, the bigger the gap between each disc. You can use these gaps to evade them at range. At melee range, try to get behind or to the side of Gideon.
Law of Causality Gideon stands still and moves his arms in a gesture, summoning a visage of the Elden Ring on his chest. After taking a certain amount of hits, he will retaliate with a golden blast. The damaging explosion triggers after five hits, and will most likely inflict counter damage when triggered in melee range. Either trigger the explosion at range, or utilize Spirit Ashes and their much higher HP.
Rykard's Rancor Gideon summons a flaming skull that homes in on its target and creates a trail of flame as it flies. After a short delay, explosions are released in a cascading fashion along the trail. Neither the skull nor the trail deal damage so use this to your advantage to plan your evasion. Alternatively, you can use the pillars in the chamber to block the skull. Simply stand so a pillar is between you and Gideon as he casts the spell and the skull will get stuck behind the structure, releasing all explosions behind it.
Comet Azur Gideon channels energy into his staff and then releases a powerful beam of magic. This spell is extremely powerful but has a very obvious telegraph. Wait until the last trails of energy are being sucked into his staff before you dodge. Alternatively, you can use the pillars in the room to block the attack.
This spell will only be cast if Sellen's questline is NOT completed prior to burning the Erdtree.
Black Flame Ritual Gideon quickly releases pillars of black flame all around him. Dodge out of range immediately.
Bloodboon Gideon will reach into a throws out a spray of bloodflame in a cone formation. This attack applies bleed build up.

This spell has a wind up time and can be countered by staggering Gideon out of it. The short range of the spell also allows the player to quickly outrange it. This spell will only be cast if Gideon is informed of Mohg, Lord of Blood prior to burning the Erdtree.

Scarlet Aeonia Gideon will jump into the air and turn into a lotus flower before slamming into the ground creating an explosion of scarlet rot. Likewise, this attack applies scarlet rot build up.

The large wind up time of this attack makes it extremely easy to run away from or roll under as Gideon can not change direction once casting. This spell will only be cast if Gideon is informed of Malenia, Blade of Miquella prior to burning the Erdtree.

Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Voice Actor: Joe McGann
  • He will gain access to new spells depending on the shardbearers that you have defeated. Informing him of the defeat of Mohg and Malenia will give him access to their spells.
  • He does not use his Scepter in combat, only using it to cast its skill. He uses a Carian Glintblade Staff in the right hand and a Sacred Seal in his left.

This is the only boss in Eldon Ring that I believe should be buffed just because It's embarrassing to see him get offed so easily. Like at least give him three crimson tears

      • Anonymous

I think they buffed him in 1.07. He has zero cast time on his WoG now and can cast it while knocked down. Which might be a bug left in from whatever they did to buff him.

        • Anonymous

Did they buff him in 1.07? He was not a problem before but now he just spams Triple Ring and it is like impossible to get close. Even though I get close the rings return and there is no time to attack.

          • Anonymous

Confused by the language on Comet Azur. He definitely used this on me during the fight, but I completed Sellen's questline. Unless "completed" implies siding with Jerren at the end?

            • Anonymous

He really saw godfrey at the foot of the erdtree and was like "nah i think I'll pass on the whole elden lord thing"

I did some research and based on the Wretch class, if Gideon was a Player, he would be LV 99 (Minimum) with 60 Int, 42 FTH, 17 ARC, 12 STR and 18 DEX. He also would have 14 Memory slots, which would be impossible for any player since tha max is 12 using the Moon of Nokstella and all 8 Memory Stones.

I like to think that he stood in the middle of his boss arena all smug like to stop any Tarnished from getting to the Erdtree, saw a silhouette approaching, prepared to give his speech, then realised the silhouette was Godfrey’s and just stepped to the side in fear to let him pass

                    • Anonymous

Night Comet just chunked this boy down, he didn’t even advance or anything.. felt kinda cheap, but hey, maybe the guy who facetanks spells ISNT quite up to snuff to be Elden Lord

                      • Anonymous

Dude has to be in the very top of bosses judging by his damage output. Sure, he goes down in seconds but on a melee build you can get melted in seconds as well especially when letting him finish his monologue.

                        • Anonymous

Seeing Gideon use Scarlet Aeonia on me was so cute. Especially after being nuked by Malenia with it countless time. Gidoen's Scarlet Aeonia just looked like a budget version lol.

Based on what I'm reading, Sir Gideon Ofnir the All-Knowing is either a cheater or a hacker. And before you ask, no I'm not taking this seriously, this is just for the giggles.

You can hold up to twelve spell slots. Yet, Gideon in his boss fight can carry:

Comet (1 slot), Comet Azure (3), Black Flame Ritual (1), Scarlet Aeonia (3), Bloodboon (1), Triple Rings of Light (1), Rykard's Rancor (2), Law of Causality (1) and Carian Phalanx (1). That all would require a total of 14 slots, which is impossible to achieve. You're welcome :)

Everyone saying this fight is a joke and too easy, try actually doing the fight instead of abusing his broken AI, dude is legit harder than Radagon if you let him finish the monologue, attacking him while he's talking is as cheesy as sniping Mohg or Niall from outside the fog wall imo

                              • Anonymous

For whatever reason, inflicting Madness on him as a cooperator sometimes instakills him (can't confirm if it's the same for the host). Third or fourth Frenzy Burst suddenly does around 20k damage.

                                • Anonymous

Just spam Giant Hunt Ash of war and he will be on the Ground the whole fight. You can even attack him when he is lying on the floor.

Does anyone know what the rewards are for speaking to gideon about the shard bearers? It says on the ashen capital wiki that any unclaimed rewards can be bought from the twin maiden husks but I don't see anything new there. I can't remember if I told him about the haligtree but I think black flames protection was given to me by him, but I know I never told him about Malenia because I didn't beat her until after I made the tree burn, so what did I miss out on?

                                    • For those wondering why Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing chooses to fight the player:

Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing became aware of the Elden Beast and that Marika plans to use the Tarnished to kill it and reward them with the throne. In his mind the task is impossible and thus none shall take the throne and Marika wants to continue to incite the Tarnished to try.

I summoned Latenna for this fight. I just thought it would be fitting, but turns out she's a really good choice too. Constantly pressuring him, sometimes staggering him out of his casts, even sets off Law of Causality early if you're a melee build.

Now I'm not saying this in a way that's meant to poke fun or be insulting, but has anyone struggled with this dude ever?

why do all that strategy above when you can use a fast hitting weapon like a thrusting sword/rapier to just infinitely chase him and stunlock him
used a antspur rapier and poked him over and over
he could not cast a single spell

Gave me an inordinately hard time as a straight sword user. I thought he'd fold in half if I got up close to him but he's spamming nuclear damage spells, there are particle effects everywhere making it hard to see what he's casting next, and he can roll out of his stagger animation or something because I can't land any combos. Ultimately killed him with Inescapable Frenzy. Grabbed him when he was casting Law of Causality, then he cast Black Flame Ritual but I was already right next to him so I just grabbed him again.

                                              • Anonymous

Basically your stereotypical mage in terms of "fighting style", carried by his absolutely cracked spells but is a complete chump otherwise, Frenzied Flame spells completely wreck him aswell, especially Frenzied Burst with its sheer range, Inescapable Frenzy also can take huge chunks of his health off if you manage to grab him and is actually useful against him unlike pretty much every enemy that's not a tarnished.

                                                • Anonymous

The most fun I've ever had in this game was beating this guy by only chucking the moon at his face. Both moons (I used Dark Moon, but Full Moon is likely better) absorb magic, including Gideon's spells. You have to to time your casts correctly though, his Comets are fast enough to hit you out of the animation. If you've killed Rykard, his Rancour is very exploitable with this method.

                                                  • He figured out the ultimate knowledge: how to use Cheat Engine. Unfortunately, he doesn't want his account banned, so he only went with infinite FP, extra memory slots, and deathblight immunity.

                                                    • Anonymous

They shouldn’t let you fight him till after his speech. Missed opportunity for a good boss fight with all his different spells.

                                                      • Anonymous

This guy is completly nuts as soon as you hit NG +3

Throwing the flower out in 1 second, followed by 3 comets in your face and then doing 2 times the holy attack WHILE hes rolling. It*s like a PVP fight vs a cheater. Mocked bout him so much in the first 3 playthrougs, now hes literally the hardest boss.

This man CHEATS. All his spells require 13 memory slots to have on at once, the player is only limited to 12, making my Gideon offnir build a mockery as it can’t have all his spells equipped at once, biggest disappointment in this game I’ve ever had this far

I let him do his monologue when I walked into the room. Didn't want to be rude. Then once the fight started, I used Nebula, and just chained it, and he died. Come on, man.

Some wacky **** going on with his healthbar, he has a separate healthbar like NPCs have, with only 985 health, distinct from his both healthbar which has over 6226 HP. Realized this after using inescable Frenzy against him which with 47 FTH and +10 Frenzied Seal did 985 to his NPC healthbar, but 6661 to his boss Healthbar.

My best guess is that Inescapable Frenzy went straight for his NPC health, and that he uses a similar system to bosses like Ludwig, 4 Kings, and Fire Giant where there's a seperate boss model loaded somewhere that acts as a proxy for the boss healthbar. I'm no dataminer so I can't go in and check myself though.

                                                                • This man's really trying to flex on us. If you add up the memory slot usage of every spells he uses, including the ones he uses if you beat Malenia, Mohg, and Rykard, it totals up to 14 memory slots. The most a player can use is 12. Gideon truly knows all. Even a secret way to get 2 extra memory slots.

                                                                  • For those wishing to cosplay Gideon. He is a Spell only user despite his scepter being a hammer, not a staff. By the looks of it he uses just a simple glintstone staff (Prince of Death's Staff if you wish to upgrade this build) and he does use the scepter only for it's ash of war. The seal he uses is unknown but I would use the Golden Order Seal due to his build being a mix between sorceries and incantations. His spells consist of Comet, Comet Azur, Black Flame Ritual, Triple Rings of Light, Carian Phalanx and Law of Causality. He will also use the following spells after defeating the bosses that use them: Scarlet Aonia from Malenia, Rykard's Rancor for Rykard and Bloodboon for Mohg. With the amount of spells he has as well as the memory slot he uses for the spells in his kit, there is no way to equip all spells he has. With all 8 memory stones and the Moon of Nokstella, you can have a total of 12 memory slots. Gideon uses a total of 14.This man really trying to flex on us.

I find it cool that his moveset can change depending on the information you give to him, but one thing I noticed is that on all of my 5 tries defeating this boss, he never used the three rings of light incantation, is there a reason for that?

                                                                            • Anonymous

He didn’t even bother to stop the monologue as we just turned him into a River of Blood; and we stopped attacking to go give him an opportunity to even try to fight back. He healed. So we painted the floor with his red wine.

Took out a Great Lance, rubbed some magic grease on it, and just walked up to him and poked him over and over. Fight was over in 30 seconds.

Still the proper amount of runes and all his stuff have been acquired at the end of the fight.
That was a disappointment for me but I'm relieved to see it was just a bug of some sort, and that he is a true boss in fact.

It outranges all his spells by a wide margin and limits his movement due to all the madness procs. I was able to enter the boss room, target him, then spam the ability. He wasn’t able to land a single spell and I didn’t move. Might be a good thing to put in tips

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Well, it's sad that his boss fight could not translate into what the lore actually meant. Gideon is not a Warrior, but the strongest Tarnished Spellcaster by far.

The players rellish too much into the "our tarnished is the strongest", but never stops to think that out of every character, he is the one that dies the most, that flasks incessantly, that can have access to some legendary skills and even use Ashes.

The NPC's have not that easy life... as everytime you kill one of them... they are truly gone. No respawning. What if the game used these rules for our "adventures"? One flask per fight and definitive death? Just like the NPC's!

Also... even for cosplaying a character we deem "weak" as Ensha, one needs at least 36 Int, 22 dex, 16 Arc, and Mind enough to cast his spells multiple times WITHOUT flasking. Also, if we count how much damage we do to each NPC boss, we will see that they often have much more than 1500 HP, so they have a lot of Vit too, and probably Stamina as well.

If one tries to cosplay Bernahl, just so you can move around with his armor and weapon, one will have to get: 24 str, 20 dex, 25 faith and more than 25 stamina. But we know that he must have much more than 24 str, after all, at Farum Azula, we are about 130 lvl and even though he can kill us with 3 swipes of his Scepter...

NPC's are really strong in this world. Respect them.
