Smithing Stones are Upgrade Materials in Elden RingSmithing Stones are used to upgrade regular Weapons and Shields. This page covers a full list of all the Smithing Stones in Elden Ring which includes information regarding description, location, and usage.

You can visit the Upgrades page to learn more about the Upgrade Mechanics of Elden Ring.

How to use Smithing Stones

Smithing Stones can be used to upgrade regular equipment up to +25 (For unique equipment please visit Somber Smithing Stones). You'll need to visit a Blacksmith and have the correct level of Smithing Stone in correlation to the current level of your weapon.

Total upgrade costs

For normal upgrades 2, 4 and 6 amounts of Smithing Stones are required. This gives a total of 12 Smithing Stones of each level. As of Patch 1.03, upgrade prices have been reduced to roughly 1/4 across the board. (e.g Smithing Stone (1) costs 200 runes instead of 800, Smithing Stone (2) costs 400 runes instead of 1,600, etc.)

Total Number Needed

There are 182 Weapons and 58 Shields that require Smithing Stones to upgrade. You would need 2,880 of each numbered stone and 240 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones to upgrade everything. Due to the limited number of Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, this would require you to reach NG+ 18 (19 playthroughs).

Where can I find Smithing Stones?

Smithing Stones can be acquired through exploration, you can visit our Interactive Map and filter by "Upgrade Material" for a complete list. You can also visit the individual Smithing Stone pages listed in the table below for a complete list of locations.

Early Game Smithing Stone Farming

You can purchase Smithing Stone (1) and Smithing Stone (2) from Nomadic Merchants in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, and the Isolated Merchant in Weeping Peninsula. You can also defeat Troll enemies to get them as drops.

How to get a max level weapon as early as possible in Elden Ring

The best place to find regular Smithing Stones in bulk are in tunnels around the world. Once you’ve opened a map to a new place, you can find new tunnels by looking for a small black semi-circles surrounded by a faint orange outline on the map. It isn't possible to get a +24 weapon without clearing some dungeons (namely Leyndell), but you can get at least up to a +15 right at the beginning of the game just through exploration and avoiding enemies.

Starting from Limgrave, head up north to Stormhill and go to the cliffside southeast of the Warmaster’s Shack where a bunch of Trolls are hanging out. Make one destroy the stone statue in the area to get 5 Smithing Stone (1) and a Smithing Stone (2). Next head south to the Limgrave Tunnels to find 8 more Smithing Stone (1). In tunnels, Smithing Stones can be found on the walls or floors where enemy miners are currently mining, as yellow crystals on the ground, or on corpses lying around.

Exit the tunnel and follow the road going up north to Stormhill. When you get to the end of the collapsed bridge, jump down to the cliffside on the left and follow the path up to Liurnia of the Lakes. Head northwest to find 3 Smithing Stone (2) in a gazebo southwest of the Temple Quarter. In the southwestern part of the Academy Gate Town, you’ll find another 3 Smithing Stone (2) on a corpse near a Giant Crab. Head southeast to find a gazebo with 3 Smithing Stone (3) in it and slightly further north is a corpse on a chair with another 3 Smithing Stone (3). Make your way up north to the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel to collect the rest of your Smithing Stone (2) and (3). You can find 5 Smithing Stone (2) and 8 Smithing Stone (3) there. You can also obtain the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing (1) by defeating the boss here to buy unlimited Smithing Stone (1) and (2) at the Twin Maiden Husk if you wish.

Head up north to the Ruin-Strewn Precipice to find 9 Smithing Stone (4) and 2 Smithing Stone (5). Teleport back to Limgrave and take the teleporter chest at the Dragon-Burnt Ruins to get to the Sellia Crystal Tunnel. There, you will find 8 Smithing Stone (5). Head west and enter the Gael Tunnel to find 8 more Smithing Stone (4). You’ll have to interact with the Site of Grace near the end to leave. You can find the last 2 Smithing Stone (5) at Redmane Castle.

Upgrading your weapon past +15 will require you to progress in the game. Finding higher level Smithing Stones in tunnels is harder and you may have to rely on the unlimited stock you get from finding their respective Bell Bearing. You can obtain the two halves of the medallion for the Grand Lift of Dectus without fighting to take you to Altus Plateau. The Sealed Tunnel houses 3 Smithing Stone (6) and the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing (2) for an unlimited stock of Smithing Stone (3) & (4). You'll find the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing (3) at Zamor Ruins in the Mountaintops of the Giants for unlimited Smithing Stone (5) & (6). The Yelough Anix Tunnel in Consecrated Snowfield has 8 Smithing Stone (8) and you can obtain the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing (4) for unlimited Smithing Stone (7) & (8) by defeating the Godskin Duo at Crumbling Farum Azula.

The earliest Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone you can acquire is from helping Jerren at the end of Sellen's questline. You'll have to progress far enough to defeat Rennala at the Academy of Raya Lucaria and Radahn during the festival at Redmane Castle to be able to finish this quest and obtain the stone.

Um, why upgrade shields? Seems to be very small, diminishing returns, and the defensive stats of shields don't even show upgrades or changes in-game.

Here's how to get your weapon to +16 without ever moving into or past Stormveil or dealing with any boss enemy:

Get your weapon up to +3. Move to Gael Tunnel, then quickly start killing the three Redmane Soldiers (one to immediately to the right after entering the main room and two next to the small land octopus), and return back to grace, then repeat. Redmane soldiers have a small chance to drop Smithing Stones (2), (3), and (4). Farm them until you have twelve (3)s. You will have also gathered several (2)s and (4)s in the process as well. If you don't have sufficient (2)s for three upgrades, you can buy three of them from a Merchant on the Weeping Peninsula, and further three are in Castle Morne, and there are a few others in several places in Limgrave. There are eight (4)s lying around in Gael Tunnel alone, and unless some crazy RNG is at work, that should also be enough to get you to twelve stones by the time you've got all (3)s.

Now you got your non-somber weapon of choice to +12. Now move to Sellia Crystal Tunnel (easiest way is through Dragon-Burnt Ruins in Limgrave). Here you have 8 (5)s lying around. Clean up the area or rush through, picking up all eight stones along the way (although it's very hard to rush with the pests' missile attacks). Now you have your weapon to +14. You need 4 more (5)s, three of which can be found in the statue by going north from Caelem Ruins, hopping from Caelid in Dragonbarrow, then baiting the dragon into destroying the breakable statue that's nearby (easy as the dragons sluggish and very easily outrun). Now you just need one more stone (5). Your final destination is Redmane Castle, which contains both two Smithing Stone (5)s and two (6)s. Now you can upgrade your weapon to 16, which guarantees everything before Altus Plateau (excluding Dragonbarrow) is utterly trivialized in terms of difficulty. Enjoy!

Note that this is the shortest route, but not necessarily the least time consuming one due to the farming required in Gael Tunnel. You can drop down the Siofra Well and find a few Smithing Stone (3)'s that could somewhat shorten the tedious farming. You could also rush past Stormveil to Liurnia and collect (2)s, (3)s, and (4)s in various places there. The above route is merely meant to preserve as much early content possible so you can breeze through it as an OP machine of death that one-shots mobs left and right and melts bosses' health bars. Challenge is nice, but sometimes it's also fun to destroy everything in your path without much effort.

Farm smithing Stone 5s in the Sealed Tunnel (Capital Outskirts) , kill the 6 miners (will drop 5s) and Vulgar Militia in the first section before the lift . (Get other stuff as well, don't forget to collect the cracked crystal). Somber 2s are dropped by some of the small hands in the courtyard (just after the main entrance) in Caria Manor.

"Make your way up north to the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel to collect the rest of your Smithing Stone (2) and (3). You can find 5 Smithing Stone (2) and 8 Smithing Stone (8) there."

Need to edit page "You can find 5 Smithing Stone (2) and 8 Smithing Stone (3) there." And link smithing stone (3) instead of (8).

I just registered to edit wiki but am new so idk where the edit page button is at.

So if you were to buy every upgrade material for all non somber weapons ONLY it would cost 31,104,000 runes. You can receive about 714k runes per gold fowl foot with the mohgwyn albinauric farming method, so in total you only need about 44 fowl feet to upgrade every non somber weapon to near max.

Hope this helps for anyone crazy enough to do this.

There actually seem to be 11 smithing stone 4s in the Ruin-Strewn-Precipice. I got lucky and one of the miners dropped one, bumping me up to twelve.

What do the Blacksmiths do with these stones? Do they like melt and smash it together with our weapons or something? How do they work?

                  • Anonymous

Never found a single smithing stone in ANY of my playthroughs, had to play without them, thanks fromsoftware

Don't try to branch out and upgrade more than two or three weapons with these, if you're starting out. You will be punished later on as higher tier stones are less and less accessible, and found more behind gauntlets of tough enemies or in obscure and well hidden areas.

While the earliest you can get an ancient dragon smithing stone is from Jerren, I would agrue that it is easier to get one via nepheli loux's questline as morgott is easierthan radahn imo

Which of these (and the somber ones) that can be bought infinitely?

Haven't found the optimal weapon yet, so I want to know how the upgrade level that I can reach in the one I'm using right now, without f***** up the playthrough.

These seriously need to get balanced. 1+2+3 would be perfect. I feel like normal weapons are completely unviable for this exact reason. You need to actively look where to find them enough to level up one weapon, while somber are gained enough for several naturally through progression only. By the time, you get the bell bearings, you are essentially in NG+. Shame, cuz ashes of war make them more fun for different playstyles.

if you want buy like 999 for each smithing stone from twin sister you need 40 159 800 rune you can correct me if i'm wrong and for all guy who's like it's useless to get so much smithing stone well you right but i like to switch build so much time so you never gonna be annoying because you don't have smithing stone to upgrade if you buy 999 of all NORMAL smithing stone .

I don't understand the point of the patch to reduce purchase price to 1/4 from original release, cost of purchasing from merchants was never the problem, the problem is there literally isn't enough stones on the map to get even a single maxed weapon until almost NG+, they should have reduced the amount of stones required from 2+4+6 to 1+2+3 or even 1+1+1 instead

                                • Anonymous

It feels there's as many of these as the are somber smithing stones. Only problem is you need 11 more of each per weapon!!!

                                  • 8 level (8) stones in Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is possibly incorrect. Might be 8 leve (3), because the locations for listed for level (8) stones never mention the Lakes

Fix the links on the page, please. Clicking the individual stones goes to https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Smithing+Stone+[5] and that's 404

Would be great, if the chart also included the number of smithing stones required for each upgrade. That way you can shop them easier by amount, if you want to upgrade more than one weapon for testing and stuff :)

                                        • Added section for total number needed based on number of listed weapons and shields on wiki as of April 2, 2022. Somber Smithing Stone weapons were directly counted, and the weapon amount for this page was deduced based on 309 total listed on weapons page. Shields were directly counted.

I tried to upgrade my greatsword to +2 but it said I needed 4 "smithing stones (1)". There are currently smithing two types of "stone (1)". One that upgrades to "+3" and one that upgrades to "+1". I have both types. I also have smithing stone (2) but it won't let me upgrade. Anyone know why?

                                            • Anonymous

I think they should reduce how many stones you need and make it just like it was in DS2.
Needing only 6 stones to reach +3, it would make upgrading weapons less time consuming, and a better experience overall, even more so in a game like this where there are so many weapons that you might want to try out,

                                                When?

Weird, the price of the stone 1 and 2 on the twin maiden husk are still the same for me. I give the bell bearing before 1.03

Does anybody experience the same thing or is it just me?

For anyone who has encountered the bug where your smithing stone spawns or your flower spawns are not showing up in your caves and dungeons, I believe the reason is that you clicked the guidance statue to that cave/dungeon as a summon in another player's world. I've tested it once after and so far it is correct. So don't click the guidance statues, especially not in coop!!!

Before anyone gets mad at me, I'm still playing pre update, I have a unfortunately slow internet. I was curious why Gold and Somber Gold Smithing Stones are here but they are listed as Somber Smithing Stones (5) and (6). We're the names changed to just Somber Smithing Stones after the update?

                                                                    Splinter

                                                                    Shard
                                                                    Large Shard
                                                                    Chunk
                                                                    Large Chunk
                                                                    Ingot
                                                                    Slab
                                                                    Ancient Slab

Though I imagine doing that for multiple languages would likely be quite a challenge... if not impossible...

                                                                    So numbers make sense really...

                                                                    • Anonymous

Sell your dragon stones at endgame if a patch for the game doesn't come out by then +25 is bugged, it actually decreases damage.

                                                                      • Anonymous

There's a bug that makes +25 weapons weaker, if it isn't patched before you reach endgame just sell your dragon stones instead.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

Looking at this I see they did a numerical suffix to denote rank instead of varying name. Works i suppose.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Having them just be called Smithing Stone (number denoting level) was really lazy. Early on I just assumed that it meant I picked up more than one in a gather and so excitedly went to upgrade my weapons only to find that I had none and that the number meant the level. Same with the Golden Runes pickups. They were good with the unique naming conventions in previous Souls games, why did they drop the ball with these placeholder names here?

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

We're gonna need a farming method for these, especially the higher level ones. Hopefully we aren't stuck with only being able to max out one weapon in this game.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

25 hours in and haven't even started upgrading lol. I worry there will be a limit on how many weapons we can max out like in DS3 so I've been hesitant to put anything into my early weapons. Though both the Greatsword and the Lordsworn Sword and Greatsword are pretty darn nice.

                                                                                    • Anonymous
