Dialogue in Elden Ring: Smithing Master Hewg

Introduction

  • You're a new face. No matter, it's all the same.
Lay out your arms. Let's get smithing.
    • [About the chains on your legs]
      • "I see you've noticed the chains. Nothing special. I'm a prisoner, and these are my chains.
I'm trapped by the Hold, undying, smithing for you fools. That's all there is to it".
    • [You're a prisoner?]
      • "Nah, don't read too much into it. I've no grudge against you.
My being a prisoner is no fault of yours. Besides, I don't mind smithing.
Despite my differences, the weapons get stronger, all the same.
Given time, technique never fails. Besides, it helps me forget. The sheer terror of her..."

§Prayer

  • "Your divinity, have mercy, and grant me forgiveness. The road is yet long. A God is not easily felled. But one day, without fail, you will have your wish. So please, grant me forgiveness, Queen Marika..."

While caught praying

  • "Ah, You, is it? I...didn't notice you there.
I'll be doing my job, same as ever. Just lay out your arms".
    • [About the prayer]
      • "Those words were not meant for you. I may be prisoner to you Tarnished lot.
But my prayers are mine and mine alone. Well, I've had my say. I'll be more careful, too."

§When asked about Roderika

  • "The girl you brought here...
She's crestfallen, and can scarcely swing a blade, but she has a gift for spirit tuning.
I saw another one like her, long ago. Their eyes share the same hue".

After speaking to Roderika

  • "The girl? What about her?"
    • [Would you watch over Roderika?]
      • "Are you out of your mind?
Who'd stay with an ugly brute who only knows how to smith?
Absurd. And besides, she'd never agree to it".
    • [It's what she wants]
      • "I refuse to believe it. I don't doubt you,
but I know when something's too good to be true".

After speaking to Roderika again

  • I spoke with the girl. She has a gift for spirit tuning. So I told her everything I know.
I'm indebted to a spirit tuner I met long ago. It was all I could do to honour her.
    I'm sorry I doubted you.

Other

  • After defeating Godrick, The Grafted
    • "Now, look at you. Those eyes tell a story. Of a challenger, who's felled her mark.
Fine and well. Now, lay out your arms".
  • Interaction while smithing
    • "Well, where've you been hiding? I took you for dead.
No matter. It's all the same. Lay out your arms, then".
  • After defeating Godskin Duo
    • "I'll smith... as long as you like" "Now ...lay out your ...arms"
  • After arriving in Leyndell
    • "No, no, no, no...
I need to do better than this! This'll never kill a god.
I can do better than this! It needs to slay a bloody god!
      Oh, it's you.
Don't pay me any mind. It's not important.
      Just lay out your arms."

About Roderika (after her dialogue about becoming a certified spirit tuner)

  • The girl has come a long way.
As ever, time and technique have made her stronger. Tis good to see.
An imprisoned monster does not deserve an apprentice, or a daughter.
But at times, that's precisely what she feels like to me.
I've gone soft. And it isn't easy.

After refusing Melina's request at the Forge of the Giants

  • Are you having second thoughts? Might I have a word, then?
Your kind are meant to challenge them. To slay them.
    The demigods. And their god.
If you remain loyal to your calling, then no matter what you do, no matter what happens to me,
I will never cease to smith your weapons. Until you have one to slay a god.

After the cutscene at the Forge of the Giants

  • I knew you'd be back. Lay out your arms. Let's get to smithing.
  • Weren't you listening? As I've always said. You came to challenge the demigods, and their god. To slay them.
And as long as you do, I will always smith your weapons.
It is what I wish. To smith a weapon for you to slay a god.

After speaking to Roderika again

  • I've upset the girl. She says that now my chains are broken, I'm free. That if I stay here, I will be ruined with the Roundtable.
What use have I for freedom now? I smith weapons to slay a god. I have lived, and will die, doing so, upon this spot.
    Is there any other way?

§About the god-slaying weapon

  • Use my masterpiece to slay a god. That is all that I have lived for.
And my promise to Q-queen Marika. But do me a favor, and do look after the girl.
  • I can't hold on much longer. I'm going the way of the R-roundtable... It was a great honor to smith your weapons during my time here.
Allow me to c-call you this, just once, before it ends. My lord, f-for that is what you are.

§After completing Crumbling Farum Azula

  • Who are you? Oh, I must be a blacksmith. Now, let's get smithing...
  • Could you tell me what happened? Why is the Roundtable burning, in ruins?
Why does that girl weep for me?
Have I forgotten something of dire importance?

Elden Ring Smithing Master Hewg Notes & Trivia

  • He is a Misbegotten, and he shares many similarities with them. He uses the same model as the Scaly Misbegotten, although his head is altered.
This currently makes him the only Misbegotten capable of speaking to the player, not unlike Iji, the only Troll that can speak.
  • If he is somehow killed in any way, he will drop the same items as the axe-wielding Misbegotten.
  • His hammer can be found in the real world, inside the Fortified Manor in Leyndell

      Hewg

Hewg I don't have the god-slaying weapon yet.

You promised the queen that you wouldn't rest until you made a weapon that could slay a god.

The one I maxed out can't kill a god, I'm sure. I need something else. Please, you need to make a weapon that could slay a god.

Your work isn't done yet, Hewg, I promise. Please, as long as you haven't made that weapon, you can't go. You can't leave until you've made the god-slaying weapon. So please don't go.

I don't care about being elden lord if I can't be your lord.

      Please, Hewg.

Proudly continuing Fromsoft's tradition of a NPC you constantly go back to for a basic game function having multiple lines of generic dialogue they repeat every time you talk to them. Great.

        • Anonymous

Why does he lose his memory. What was the point of this besides padding extra emotional impact onto the end of the game

          • Anonymous

I really wished if hewg gives you a god slayer weapon he crafted at some point before the finale boss it would give more emotional meaning for his job as a blacksmith instead of just upgrading

            • Anonymous

He said the "Now, look at you...." line, even though I had not defeated Godrick.
This was right after I defeated the Draconic Tree Sentinel, although I hadn't been in the roundtable for a while.

              • Anonymous

Radagon is a good fight and all but part of me wishes it was Marika instead just so I can beat her to death with my +25 hammer for my guy Hewg

                • Anonymous

Anyone else want that colossal axe that looks at heavy as the guts greatsword. They're both right behind master hewg. Would be sick

                  • Anonymous

Is it possible to have a +25/10 weapon before speaking to Roderika about Hewg, and if so, is it then possible to persuade either to leave?

                    • Anonymous

I think it would have been a good twist if fromsoft forced the player to create a god-killing weapon (either +10 or +5) for Marika/Radagon and Malenia. It would give more meaning to master hewgs quest and the Ancient Dragon stones.

For example master having Master Hewg seeing an Ancient dragon stone and finally realizing he could create a god killing weapon and fulfill his promise would have been a more fitting ending

I want to believe that we made his life better than he ever dreamed of. We helped him form a close bond with a kind girl who he considered her daughter later on. He watched over her as she opened up and fulfilled her destiny as a spirit tuner. He even saw her helping two small siblings reunite. And then, we gave him hope. He saw that we're not another Tarnished around the Roundtable, but someone who made it further than anyone else. He finally believed that he will see it through his duty and we will slay a god with the weapon he forged. He was proud of us, he grew fond of us. He met his Lord. Even if we cannot tell him that we did slay a god, I hope that in his final moments of consciousness he "knew" that we will do it. Just like he knew that we are worthy to become a Lord.

Like how he assumes you just went off and died everytime you leave even if you were only gone for a second, and i guess hes kinda right in a way sometimes.

                            • Is the god-slaying weapon meant to be whatever weapon you use because he upgraded it, or is it the Godslayer sword? Does it change somthing in NG+ if you kill the final boss using the Godslayer sword? Is it another specific weapon I missed because I'm dumb dumb?

                              • Anonymous

tbh I think all misbegotten/trolls can speak, or at least have the capability to. They aren't senseless creatures whose only goal is to kill you ofc, and they're probably way more intelligent than they're made out to be.

Roderika feels bad for this guy and wants me to free him but I don't think she realizes this had it made here making a killing smithing for me. 3900 for a +10 upgrade?? Really bro? I board you in my house, should be charging you rent for the accommodations. Squatting in my keep like it's an out of work smithing shelter. Go clean the basement while I'm gone. There's invaders in there. Or at least tidy up your work station. Swords strewn about like legos waiting for someone to step on and I'm supposed to expect you to take pride in you work and smith me a weapon to slay a God? How about you slay some of this dust.

I hate having to click 4-5 times to access his services every time, until he finishes his "what back already no matter etc etc", shut up.

AFTER NEW GAME PLUS HE'S STILL IN HIS STATE AFTER DISCOVERING FARUM AZULA AND I CAN'T GET THE RODERIKA TO MOVE HELP

Hewg has it ever occurred to you that anvils exist outside of the roundtable and that you don't have to stay here

I'll ask Master Hewg...if he can teach me his lore. I know he's only a humble smith but surely he must have some nostalgia.

I was a little disappointed that there was no option to return to him and tell him that you slayed a god with one of his weapons. I know his mind is mostly gone by the time you've achieved the goal, but I would've liked to let him know.

                                            • Anonymous

Ok so I’m not an emotional person, but those last few lines of dialogue at the end of the game got me. My dad recently passed away and didn’t get to see me graduate the week after. Hewg calling the Tarnished “lord” even though he wouldn’t live to see their ascension to the throne gave me the same feeling. Kinda bittersweet.

                                              • Anonymous

what a disappointment when he promised us a weapon for committing deicide but forget it after reaching the endgame, literally goddammit.

i don't have the sanctified whetblade yet, but i just got back from clearing out deeproot depths (+finishing fia's questline) and he said the dialogue for the sanctified whetblade

                                                  • Anonymous

When you fast forward through his basic dialogue after he becomes depressed it sounds like he says "oh snap" lol.

                                                    • Anonymous

To get the "About god-slaying weapon" dialogue, I'm pretty sure another criteria is to progress through Crumbling Farum Azula. At the start of CFA I didn't have the dialogue, but when I went back just before fighting Maliketh the dialogue option appeared (This was on NG+4 FWIW).

                                                      • "I took you for dead."

I was literally just talking to spirit girl for 20 seconds. You could see me the whole time. Have you been using that hammer on your brain?

All the comments about God slaying weapons are people who don't read flavor text on ancient dragon smithing stones lol

Hewg is directly inspired by godot the blacksmith in berserk! Godot is described this way on the berserk wiki: "Godot was gruff, standoffish and rather rude. However, he was kindhearted, despite his grumpy exterior, taking in an orphaned Erica on a whim and raising her as his own daughter."

The trigger for the "After picking up the Sanctified Whetblade from Fortified Manor" conversation seems to be wrong, because I haven't picked it up, and I just got this dialogue. I have, however, reached the West Capital Rampart.

                                                              • Anonymous

he started talking about the god killer weapon after i came back with dark moonlight greatsword, so idk what the trigger is supposed to be for that or what the dialogue means

                                                                • Anonymous

At a point in my playthrough, I saw him on al fours behind the anvil, and when I interacted with him, he said "Don't worry, it's nothing." He wasn't smithing and made some pig-like noises. Neither he, nor Roderika had an option to talk about this phenomenon, neither during the event, nor after resting. It never repeated. Anyone know what may have caused this?

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Hewg says his last quotes (the ones under "???") after completing Farum Azula. I noticed he said his "My lord, for that is what you are" quote after Godskin Duo, as a selectable dialogue in his menu.
The quote that's under "after completing farum azula" happens way earlier, and if you complete Farum, he completely forgets who you and Roderika are (Enia also dies).

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

Is it possible that Hewg is Radagon. After reviewing the facts and that he looks like a Misbegotten...who used to be man turned by his regret. I think he's Radagon and Miriaka was like Roderika or reminded him of her?

                                                                          • Anonymous

Then a new dialogue option appear asking him about himself, he asks why the roundtable is burning and why there’s a girl (Roderika) weeping for him.

                                                                              • Anonymous

I might be wrong but you can only trigger his Godslaying weapon dialogue only once and that being the first time you upgrade to +10/+25. Subsequent playthroughs won't allow you to trigger that dialogue as I've upgraded weapons to +10 in NG+ and yet had no option to do so.

                                                                                • Anonymous

After you've told Roderika that you failed to convince him to leave, you can go back to him and have one more set of dialogue about Roderika that isn't listed here on the wiki.

                                                                                  • Theory: I think Hewg was some sort of royal blacksmith serving for Leyndell (through Castle Morne its shown that the Misbegotten were used as servants in times past hence his "employment" as a blacksmith) and Marika tasked him to create a weapon powerful enough to slay a god during her final moments as she knew that she would be unable to kill it herself however able to slow it through shattering the elden ring. However when the shattering occurred Hewgs body perished either immediately or soon afterwards as indicated by his 'real' hammer being present in the real Roundtable and his lack thereof. Building off this I think Hewgs spirit was binded to the roundtable when he died due to his promise to Queen Marika ('imprisoning' him to the roundtable) to create the god slaying weapon to which the purpose was to slay the greater will that Marika had turned upon in the event of Godfrey the Goldens death. I think the reasoning behind his persistence was that Hewg knew that he was the only one capable of creating the weapon due to his years of experience and lack of ties to any opportunistic sort of faction seeking the throne for themselves like Iji serving Ranni and through the persistence of his soul Hewg honed his craft to god-slaying proportion. He knew that he was incapable of killing a god himself and so he smithed and smithed waiting for a suitable wielder to present themselves and when we showed up and made our way through the shardbearers he became increasingly optimistic of our potential ability to slay the greater will, he felt this even though that he was aware that through us burning the erdtree it would sever the link of his binding to the Roundtable (which would give him the ability to pass on freely) decaying his soul through no longer being sustained by the Roundtables power (note that he refuses to leave roundtable due to its 'uselessness' hinting that both if he leaves his soul will pass on and that his efforts will have been for nothing and he has the means to just leave and is not required to fulfill the promise), never the less he is persistent in refining us the weapon that we will use to slay the greater will he was tasked with killing and through all of this Hewg fulfills his promise to Queen Marika and happily passes on once the greater will is slain by us and by the weapon that he forged. This theory probably has a bunch of holes but I like to think that Hewg was at peace and was happy towards the end and that we were able to fulfill his lifelong promise, rest well old friend.

My lord, f-for that is what you are" - Master Hewg

Like Godo, he refuses to give up smithing even if it kills him. Like Godo, he grows attached to a young girl and worries about her. In Berserk her name is Erica, and in Elden Ring her name is Roderica

I used his god-slaying weapon to kill the god, and I became the Elden Lord, but there was nothing. It's so sad that he will never know my success, not this NG and so on.

All I can do is writing the message "I did it!" near him and Roderika, and start NG+ :'(

                                                                                                  • I'm not seeing the voice lines here, and I don't remember exactly what they were to add them myself, but Hewg says something to the effect of, "Oh, I must be a blacksmith..." after he's fully lost his memory.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Its saddening to say, but he never forges a single weapon. He only refines ones you own, and "imprints" known Ashes of War onto blank slates.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

The saddest part is that you cannot tell him you did it. You can't tell him you killed a god with a weapon he strengthened. By the end, it's like your grandpa doesn't remember you. That's the only thing I cared about by the end; telling him that he was free, that we did it together.

                                                                                                          • Just a theory, since there isn't anything to back it up that I'm aware of, but I imagine that since the Hold that the Tarnished use as a homebase of sorts is separate from the one within the capital, and seems to exist to itself possibly outside of time like some other FromSoft locations( Time distortion does seem to be somewhat possible as seen when triggering the hidden dragon boss in Crumbling Farum Azul) , so when we commit the sin, and everything starts to burn that link is severed. It seems that our hold is maintained by some form of energy from the Erdtree itself, with Hewg being bound directly to the Hold whatever force was binding him, and sustaining him, is now severed. His age begins to catch up with him, resulting in his drastic memory loss, and most likely eventual death.

Like I said just a theory feel free to agree or disagree or flesh it out if you feel that it is missing some information.
