Smoldering Shield is a Small Shield in Elden Ring. The Smoldering Shield is a Shield that scales primarily with Strength and Faith. Small Shields usually weigh very little and give the least protection from attacks. They are often used by players who prefer parrying rather than blocking. Its lighter weight also makes it ideal for quick, agile characters with low equipment weight capacity.

 

Small shield made upon Mt. Gelmir forged from uncooling lava.

Resists frost with its heat, and can even be used to deal fire damage if wielded as a weapon.

 

Where to Find Smoldering Shield

  • From the Prison Town Church site of grace, exit the building and turn right, walking west until dropping down onto the first rooftop, just behind the long-necked serpent. Immediately turn left, face south and head toward the corner of the adjacent rooftop, and safely drop down onto the rocky ground below. Once there, continue downhill to the east, and drop down to the big roof to the southwest (NOT the small hexagonal rooftop). From there, make a running jump to the rocky ground to the northwest, and continue onward to the graveyard. The Smoldering Shield is found here on a corpse [Map link]

      In all fairness it would be better if you just put fire affinity on a greatshield.

        Damn I wanted to use this for my Vyke cosplay since the aesthetic of the shield is identical to Vyke's lance. But you can't put parry on it...

          Smoldering Shield vs Ice Crest Shield

          Smoldering Shield:

          Requires 10 strength, 9 dex and 12 faith. It has fire damage, but the incantation catch flame comes out faster and is stronger which renders this fire damage useless. It has a pasisve that raises 30 robustness when equipped and weights 3.0. It is not customizable and is stuck with shield bash.

          Ice Crest Shield:

          Requires 9 strength which allows every class in the game to use it at the start of the game. It has a passive of 40 robustness (Higher than Smoldering Shield) and has no skill. You can change it's skill to whatever you want, so it is very customizable. It also weights 3.0.

          In conclusion:

          Smoldering Shield is lacking and is clearly not a good shield. It has nothing going for it unless you're doing a shield run. Ice Crest Shield is superior in most ways even though it requires no investment to use it. Smoldering Shield needs a buff where it gets higher robustness like 50 or swap the stats where Smoldering has 40 and Ice crest shield 30. Because as it is right now this shield has no use in the game in a normal play through.

          Please give this shield a buff, I want to be able to use it :)

            Did anyone manage to find it from the directions given here? I know where prison town grace is but "drop down onto the rooftop" isn't exactly clear as to which fu*king rooftop?

              Currently doing a shield only run and finally found a use for this shield. Main shield does frost. Proc frostbite, then switch to this. Tap 'em with fire, then go back to frostbite shield until proc. Repeat as necessary.

                It's sad that they designed all these shields for none of them to fit in any build, I know it's hard to add diversity but at least they could make all the stats at least comparable so you didn't feel gimped using anything other than brass shield or a great shield.

                  You put Shield Bash on Carian Knight Shield with an Int build and you’ll hit upwards of 500 or 600 damage. The only Faith equivalent and it hits like a wet noddle. Torches hit harder than this shield. Sad shield is bad.

                    Designated dex/fth shield for anyone wanting to sword and board with a lightning cane sword buffed with holy damage. Can't parry, but you can trade with shield bash having enough poise. Knockdowns may set up for lightning slash.

                        Why do all of you nerds want to parry with this? It's a shield that does fire damage-- try using the shield bash to tank heavier attacks while using a light weapon, and you might start to see the value of this shield as it is.
