Moaning that eight of these somber dragon stones per playthrough isn't enough and demanding more so that every weapon can be fully upgraded because that's the only way to test them properly is entitled and it's a load of bollocks in the first place, there are plenty of resources to get accurate information on each upgrade step for any given weapon.
Its not like every single weapon is unique anyway so between somber dragon and smithing dragon stones there is plenty of choice there to get +10 on more weapons than anyone is likely to use for their build.
I didn't need to see godslayer's greatsword or blasphemous blade maxed out to know I was going to use a somber dragon stone on them. I did the same with the sword of Milos for innate bleed that doesn't scale to ARC and I've never regretted using a somber dragon stone on any of them.
I'm not sure how drastic my respec for NG+ is going to be and I held back some somber dragon and smithing dragon stones so I can start with fully upgraded weapons. I don't feel all butt hurt for having to be careful what I use a limited resource on.

        > hidden treasure of Farum Azula

well thank God you actually visit Farum Azula in the game, surely that means you can farm it there... oh. wait. there's only one of these in the entire area and it's not even exactly hidden.

Comon, complaining about "just" eight?! You could fill all six of your weapon slots with maxed out weapon and there will be two more to try. So if you feel underequipped ur have to make biiig mistakes

Lol there are only 8 of these per game cycle, and I got hard locked out of 3 of them…

            1. Progressed too far before visiting Latenna
            2. Killed Millicent for the talisman
            3. NPC invader bugged in Consecrated Snowfields

            Cool cool cool.

As for the Anastasia invasion on the frozen lake - I did it after killing putrid avatar, right before maliketh story-wise.

I also did her previous two invasions. Maybe that's why some people aren't getting it?

In dark souls 3, u could get infinite titanite slabs by defeating the soul of cinder, and returning to firelink after refusing to NG+.
I hoped this would be the case for Elden Ring. It is not. I have heard rumors that NG+6 will unlock them for infinite purchase, but I highly doubt this.

There’s one in Yelough Anix Tunnel, and it’s definitely Somber, just double checked it and used it to upgrade Lusat’s staff and got God-Slaying Armament for it

                    • Anonymous

Everyone saying you only need one maxed somber weapon anyway, use the wiki for everything. Their build, the quests, items, bosses, and locations. There's not anything wrong with that, I suppose, as it's one way to play the game. But... for people who actually like to max out weapons to test them first? Somber weapons, far more than Smithing stone weapons, only reach their true potential at +10. A +10 somber weapons is like going from 22-25 smithing stone weapon, but it can also vastly effect weapon art damage of unique weapons. Weapons like Blasphemous Blade go from a High C to a lowish B scaling, which makes a huge difference in the damage of its weapon art.

Before upgrading it to +10, I was thinking about dropping it, because Morgott's cursed blade was doing more damage, but at +10? I went from hitting 2000 damage per weapon art cast to 2840 damage on Malenia. I can hit the tree spirits for around 7000 damage now. You can't fully test weapons when your current weapon is a +10 vs a +9 somber. You can't compare them. You will always think, wow this new weapon sucks! They should allow us to downgrade weapons for a price, that gives us the somber stones back and makes them +9 again. That way, we can just swap to whatever weapon we want, test it, and if we don't like it, then we can downgrade again. Easy fix?

There should be an edit that the one in Leyndell only becomes available after burning the Erdtree. I spent far too much time looking for it before realizing.

                        • Anonymous

it's so bizarre that there's the ability to take any weapon you find to +9 and +24 thanks to the bell bearings, but you can't max them out due to a finite number of available dragon stones.

meaning you're not gonna doa lot of experimenting with your build since what's the point in changing weapons if I can't even fully upgrade it, on top of the finite number of larval tears for respecing

So it can feel like you're stuck with gear the later on you go, which is a downside for the weapons locked off in late game areas or even mid game like the Dark moon greatsword

by the time you have access to it you've already got a build set up so what goods a new weapon?

there should be a way to get more instead of being forced to go to ng+.... especially since one of these are completely missable if you did your first playthrough blind

Somber Ancients are more important than regular Ancients because the jump from +9 to +10 is more significant than +24 to +25. +9 to +10 is roughly the same as +22/23 to +25. Some weapons also jump in scaling from one letter to another (ex: C to B) for both +10 and +25

You can easily get a somber weapon to +10 super early on(pre-rennalla, maybe even pre godrick/margit, idk) by getting 1-4 from Iji, getting 5 and 6 from one of the billion locations, getting 7 from parkour in volcano manor, getting 8 and 9 from dragonbarrow, and 10 from mohgwyn dynasty mausoleum(accessed early from varre's questline)

I miss the good old days in Dark souls 1 where you could farm slabs and twinkling titanite. You could get all your weapons and armor up to max of you spent enough time grinding. No need to ever see new game+

anawhosit invaded me on the frozen river straight south from liturgicalville. i few hours earlier i did her corpse stench shack invasion. i did just finish the misbegotten cave near there right before her 3rd invasion.

The interactive map for ashen capital says there are 2 somber ancient's,yet only one is listed here? Fwiw, I can only find the one, so perhaps the map just isn't accurate?

2 of these become unobtainable randomly
                                            1. Latenna’s becomes unobtainable once you get both halves of the haligtree medallion
                                            2. If you kill millicent for her prosthetic, that one becomes unobtainable.

dont make the mistakes I did and do these quests as soon as possible…

Odd that there are less of these available pre playthrough than normal ones considering how much more important +10 somber is than +25 normal

There is one missing: Miriel Pastor of Vows will reward the player with one upon completing the Goldmask questline.

I missed this questline, and for all you other folk who find yourselves in the same situation, just kill him for the drop.

Tarnished-Eater not invading me in 3rd location. I got the Sanguine guy to invade but no smithing stone for me I guess.

we need more of those, its just so annoying, I wanna play like 20+ weapons on one char so I would have to go to ng+++++ before I even can play with some of them because I dont have enough materials

I like how 99% of the comments here are people who don’t know the difference between the somber and normal variants

Imagine a repeatable challenge boss with random move sets that would scramble each time and would reward you with one upon defeat. Something like an eternalgaol or something.

"From the main Leyndell, Capital of Ash Site of Grace, go west, along the dragon. Enter the building past it and climb the ladder"
just continue to face the mini-boss (you'll notice him) kill him and continue you will find a corpse with the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

                                                                • Anonymous

That way, I never have to go to new game+ which I find to be a huge hassle. There is absolutely no reason to go to new game+ if they would do this. Make all craft materials farmable!

                                                                  • I got 7/8 of the stones here, plus a couple more, only used 2, and somehow only have 4 in my inventory. I'm so confused. Oh well, NG+ here I come.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Anastasia didn't spawn in third location I guess (don't know wgy) and I couldn't insert miquellas needle into Malenias flower, cause I did activate the three fingers too late (after beating the Elden beast). The other 6 I could grab. On my third build now (int->arc->str/faith/ Lvl 150), but unfortunately without +10 weapons right now. Please FS fix this, so we can actually get guaranteed 8/8 in one playthrough.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

They switched it to the other +10 stone after the first update. FYI: I did my first play through without updates and interestingly Leyndall the Royal Capital was full of banished knights. You could get the caped version of the armor a lot earlier. Also, the Albineric guy who gives you a secret medallion was a statue, not a pot in base game as well. Lots of other interesting differences, but most of them bad

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

It is there near the end of the game. It took me a while to realize this after running around there. This list should mention that.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                        - What do you mean “past” the dragon? Tail or whole body?

                                                                                        - Which railing? Left or right?
                                                                                        - What building? Is it a house or a crumbled room?

We are using some godly material here and it still increase the weapon attack power as normal instead of getting x2 from normal. some heavy attribute weapon got stagger boost at +25 too.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Oh and one of these stones is attached to an invader who can very easily glitch out and just never invade, fantastic.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Imagine playing a game with 6 seperate endings that encourages multiple playthroughs and being mad that there's limited amounts of the new "titanite slab"- like every iteration prior. DS3 had a similar amount available till the DLCs hit. Valid complaint is that the last one can bug out if she doesn't invade.
