|
Somber Smithing Stone [7] is an Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Somber Smithing Stone [7] is one of the rarest forms of the somber smithing stone used to reinforce special armaments to a higher level. Upgrade Materials can be acquired through exploration, looting it from specified areas of a Location, dropped by a specific Enemy or Boss, given by an NPC, or sold by a Merchant.
Polar smithing stone drained of color.
Strengthens special armaments to +7.
Special armaments with unique characteristics cannot be strengthened with colored smithing stones. Number of steps and amount strengthened differ from standard equipment.

One can drop from the malformed star after the Ainsel River Main grace

Boy, that jump skip to get past the Noble in Volcano Manor is F***ING IMPOSSIBLE!!!
- Anonymous
1 more Somber Smithing stone (7) dropped when kill the lurking Giant Hand where you found Dung Eater real body in Subterranean Shunning Ground
- Anonymous
There is a new way to do the bridge skip for that somber 7. You do need to beat the Erdtree avatar in liurnia to get the Ruptured Crystal Tear, once you have it (I used that one crystal tear the “significantly negates physical damage” one with the ruptured one) get on the chain drink it and immediately run and jump. It should propel you forward enough to get on the edge.
I did activate the site of grace nearby (I’ll look it up after this) to avoid having to roll through the lava again. Good luck
- Anonymous
isnt there one dropped by a teardrop scarab on the bridge after the mimic tear fight?
- Anonymous
I had a Somber 7 drop from the Malfromed Star (Mini hanging Astel) in the Ainsel River main. Not much sooner than Nokstella but it's at least another option.

1-6 can be picked up off of bodies as soon as you can get to them by running, though 6 requires the trek to grab the Dectus medallions to get up to Gelmir, but in doing that you go to Dragonbarrow so you can also pick a 9 off a body and beat up a big bug for an 8; Ancient Dragon requires beating Godrick (with a +6 somber weapon lol feels like fighting a regular enemy) to progress through Varré's questline (which doesn't require any fighting after that point) to get to Mohg's and then it's a precarious but doable run to grab that.
Why did From really feel the need to remove the ledge jump skip and stop us from getting the 7 without having to fight the damn Godskin Noble? Which is annoying but I suppose still quicker than having to fight Rennala, the Draconic Tree Sentinel, and sprint through Leyndell to get to the sewers to kill the Fingercreeper.
There was something incredibly satisfying about being able to run around most of the world and only have to kill one shardbearer, one bug, and pick up a few runes alone the way, to have a Godslaying armament in about an an hour or two
- Anonymous
There are 2 atop the skull rock beside the dragon everybody bleeds out to get early souls. There super duper easy to get to by just hopping up
- Anonymous
The selia crystal tunnel has a pretty early somber 7 drop if you can beat the fallingstar beast
- Anonymous
This is like when From put only a handful of titanite chunks in DS2 but gave you a million slabs
This stone is really hard to get. Why did they put 8 and 9 in the caelid?
- Anonymous
Somber 7 is the most ridiculous to find in the whole game, I'm barely into Liurnia and I have every stone but 7 and 10. 3 copies in fact of somber 9s.
- Anonymous
What a horrible description of the volcano manner whereabouts
- Anonymous
Large Fingercreepers past Giants Grave Post site of grace drop these regularly
- Anonymous
"found on a ledge guarded by an Abductor Virgin across the bridge northwest of the Temple of Eiglay site of grace." lol instead of giving actual directions to the stone you use a path that involves a skip.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I'm still trying to understand From's thought process on making this the hardest somber stone to get? Every other one is fairly easy to get to, even 8 and 9 aren't hard. It's just this one.

I'll post it as a top level comment: The earliest +7 you can get is in volcano manor. I beat him at rune level 1, and my dodging skills are average at best. Get yourself some bleed weapons (eg 2 uchikatanas if you started as a samurai, or metoric blade/uchikatana works too) and a few sleep pots. You can craft those with the Fevor's Cookbook (1), that can be found in limgrave. Then you'll be able to kill the godskin noble (the only boss that prevents you from getting it "legit"). He's behind the fogwall just behind the big bridge. Don't forget to upgrade your weapons to +5-6/10 before the fight, it helps. Use the sleep pots until he falls alseep, be careful that throwing a sleeping pot when he's falling asleep will wake him up (yay). Then keep hitting him until he stands up, throw some again and repeat. He has a phase transition where he begins to roll (you can't stop it), just get behind a pillar, put it rather precisely between you and him, and you're good. And btw, those sleeping pots will still be very useful when you fight the Godskin duo. After that you can get a +8/+9 in Caelid, but I guess you know that.

As of 1.06 early SSS7 (by wrong warping and/or Manor skip) isn't possible anymore
- Anonymous
Malformed Star no longer drops SSS7 anymore. Either its not a guraanteed drop anymore or its patched out to be not a drop.
Also, to the idiots who are saying down below that there is one next to Magma Wyrm in Volcano Manor are confused. Its a normal Smithing Stone 7, not the somber one - so don't bother. Only early SSS7 is the one with jump skip or the CFA warp skip one.
- Anonymous
Can be farmed by killing the finger creepers in the sewers under Leyndell by Dung Eater's gaol.
Note: they will stop spawning once you talk to Dung Eater after defeating him in the outskirts of Leyndell
somber 7 can be claimed without any boss battles if you utilize the wrong warp skip. i just now did it on ps5 on v1.05 go to youtube and look up "Somber Smithing Stone 7 noashiya" and they made a video of how to do the skip post volcano manor jump patch.

Did my game glitch or something cuz when I killed the malformed star it didn’t drop the item

For those having trouble finding the one past godskin noble: look up the location of ash of war royal Knight's resolve. The doorway to reach the balcony with the +7 somber stone is right down the hall from royal Knight's resolve, next to a seedbed curse item. You will need 2 stonesword keys, beat godskin noble, find the stonesword key door on the second story of the room that has the balcony with the warp to rykard. After entering door you will drop down a series of hanging metal crates and find the balcony with the stone near where the seedbed curse is.
I can confirm that the finger crawlers in front of Dung Eaters cell DO continue to drop Somber Stone 7's
I got 4 in the past 30 mins.
To get there:
from the underground roadside grace run out of the room through the SE door.
go down the hall north east, drop down the grate.
Run PAST the rats, turn left and run past the flowers.
Climb the ladder.
I use the grafted dragon and burn them.
rinse and repeat.

The two lions at the start of Castle Sol both drop one of these.
- Anonymous
If only the Fingercreepers near the Road to Iniquity SoG dropped Somber 7's instead of just 4's (tested under Patch 1.05) ... Looks like I'll have to get my butt to Dung Eater's cell, asap.
There’s actually a second one in volcano manor. It’s accessible as soon as you’re teleported there by the abductor in raya lucaria. It’s guarded by a wyrm. You don’t have to do crazy specific jumps to get to it either

unreal how absurdly hard this is to get compared to 6, 8, 9, and an ancient Dragon Somber stone
- Anonymous
1 in Forbidden Lands: There is a Somber Smithing Stone 7 in the mouth of a large skull fossil to the right of the path just before you get to the Golden Seed tree, that is just before the Grand Lift of Rold.

- Anonymous
Deeproot Depths 1 is not at the correct location on the map. It's the building SW of what is marked

the finger creepers near dung eater also have a small chance of dropping these. Progressing too far into dung eaters questline will make them stop appearing.

The stutters that could have been fixed if from just left that one somber 7 at the manor ****ing be.

''May drop from Malformed Star (small chance) located in Ainsel River Main.''
i believe this to be guaranteed as the malformed star doesn't respawn. also just got it
- Anonymous
youre missing one that can be found in the giant skull on the path up to the rold lift, right side
I think I saw Distortion2 using the jump in a speedrun, but I doubt he is using current patch. The run was after 1.04, I am not sure what update he was using. I remember watching this on Youtube and people were wondering if the stone skip is still possible in chat. I love watching Dist, but I find it hard to believe he just got it on his first try.
To be clear, this was a very tough RL1/SL1 run. Dist2 is great, but for him to just clear it no worries on the first try is... weird.

To get to volcano manor normally :
Eiglay wooden Elevator -> run through till you get to the magic head snake room -> turn around and get up to the two stonesword-key gargoyle -> drop down into the room till you get to the bottom with the enemies -> run to the seedbed curse and turn left shortly before the seedbed curse
- Anonymous
The earliest ones are from Nokstella and Ainsel River Malformed Star, can access via the well in East Liurna. For those who don't want to deal with Volcano Manor jumps and stuff.

I had one drop from one of those disgusting hands outside Dung Eater's cell in Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Possibly a rare drop?

The Volcano Manor jump is still possible in 1.04, I did it after 13 minutes of trying. With the double jump strategy you can try at least 5 times faster. I did it on PC with PS5 controller. Aim between the torch and the wooden pole and go light. If you want video to see the double jump, search in yt: epiktoni Somber Smiting Stone
- Anonymous
Can confirm volcano jump is still possible in 1.0.4, but took me 40 minutes. Run to the right as far as you can without your right foot landing on empty air, angle your screen up and a tiny bit to the left, and jump late with the intent to land just to the right of the brazier pedestal's square corner that's pointing at you. When you land it don't panic - Jump forward and to the right to land it. I landed it once and jumped to the left, but the brazier's hitbox pushed me back down. (even watching my cilp of how I landed it the first time, the second time took another 10 minutes on top of that)

There's also one sitting on the floor near the Giant Crayfish in sewers, in addition to the scarab inside the pipe.
It's pretty funny how they managed to throw a 8 and 9 somber stone almost next to each other in Cealid at us, but for the 6 and 7 you really have to do some work.. Wouldn't it make more sense the other way around?

Easy farm is in mountaitop after first chain, hug left wall and kill spiders

I DON'T WANT TO PARKOUR IN VOLCANO MANOR Someone just ****ing tell me how to get there normally.
- Anonymous
The ledge jump at volcano manor is still possible, just really really hard as of 1.04. STya on the right side of the metal wheel and jump late. Still took me alomost an hour.
- Anonymous
Volcano manor is patched. I recomend going to deep root depths there are 3 of them . You need to beat Rhadhan , mimic tear and valiant gargoyles or just do volcano manor usual way
- Anonymous
The stone at the Volcano Manor bridge is no longer accessable via jumping from below.
So we gotta go the long way around fellas.
- Anonymous
Did they patch the volcano manor jump? I've been trying to get it for like 45 minutes but I can't

The malformed star reachable right next to Ainsel River Main has a 100% drop chance of one of these.

There is also a somber smiting stone past the Magma wyrm at Volcano Manor

In Caelid, Dragonbarrow, directly west from the fort faroth sight of grace on top of the white rock there's 2 of them.

The one regarding the supposed [7] northwest of The Temple of Eiglay is wrong, that one is a [5]. I know because I just checked literally right now.

From the foot of the forge grace at the mtn of the gods, going north/northwest there is an very small alcove with lesser fingercreeper, two more drop down. After you fast travel to grace and repeat. If its your first time there is a dead body w a rune marking the spot.

Can confirm that they drop from the hand enemies in front of the Dung Eater's cell. I don't know if they're one-time only or not.

Mountaintops of the Giants: Found inside a statue with a glowing crack at the bottom of the western side of the frozen lake. Lure one of the nearby Golems to destroy the statue and collect the item. This one has normal Smithing Stone 7 not somber

The one listed as being at Mountaintops of the Giants where you lure the golem to hit the statue and break it open, it gives Smithing Stone 7, not Somber Smithing Stone 7.

There is another one in Deeproot Depths in a small cave by a waterfall in the northern most part of the map. It is being guarded by a Runebear.

It can drop from tiny hand monsters in front of dung eater cell in the capital sewers.

West Consecrated Snowfield: There's a breakable statue with Somber Smithing Stone [7] and Somber Smithing Stone [8] inside. There's a bear uphill to the east that can be used to break it.
These are regular Smithing Stones

Hot take: I think they should nerf somber smithing stones to require 3-4 per level to make it on par with regular smithing stones and previous Fromsoft games. It stifles creativity when a quarter of the weapons are significantly easier to upgrade. Additionally, you cannot buy +7 and +8 regular stones until the doorstep of the final boss; meanwhile, somber scan be maxed before Goodrick (I know this because I’ve done it via Verré quest line). I should not be able to upgrade 15 different somber weapons to +8 for the same amount of exploration as 2 regular smithing weapons.

Is this even passible to get (7) stone without going to Altus Plato and ruining whole bunch of questlines? It's just so dumb to making easy (8) and (9) with only running trough some Caelid places, but to get (7) you have to do so much stuff or it's super rare to farm

I have an 8 and 9 but can't find the 7.
Funny the wiki has locations for 7 I haven't even found yet. But I still got 8 and 9s
