Staff of Loss is a Glintstone Staff in Elden Ring. The Staff of Loss scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for those looking to play an ambusher type of caster.
Staff missing its glintstone. Wielded by sorcerers who believe that discovery comes through acts of asceticism.
This staff only distinguishes itself when casting invisibility sorceries, but that is reason enough for some to wield it.
Where to Find Staff of Loss in Elden Ring
The Staff of Loss weapon can be found at the following location:
- Sellia, Town of Sorcery: Found on a corpse leaning over a building's balcony in the west. Accessible by jumping across the rooftops. See the Sellia page for details on how to get it. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Staff of Loss Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: This armament has no skill. If the armament in the other hand has a skill, that skill will be used instead.
- This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War
- Staff of Loss can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
- Despite the description, this staff does not block the casting of non-Invisibility spells.
- Boosts attack power of Invisibility sorceries by 30%.
- Invisibility sorceries include Night Shard and Night Comet. Also note that night sorceries are not dodged by NPC characters, making this an excellent staff to fight enemies that tend to dodge other ranged attacks
- As of Patch 1.03.2, this 30% damage buff will be applied to appropriate spells regardless if it is the staff being used to cast. It only needs to be visibly equipped on the player character to apply.
- Despite seeming like they belong in the category of Invisibility, the following sorceries do not have increased damage or duration according to testing: Ambush Shard, Night Maiden's Mist, and Eternal Darkness.
- Despite being categorized as sorceries of invisibility internally, the following sorceries are unaffected because they do not deal damage: Unseen Blade and Unseen Form.
- With 80 INT, this staff has: 179 sorcery scaling at +0 // 339 sorcery scaling at +25
- At ~80 INT, this staff will outperform any staff in the game in terms of raw damage, so long as you limit yourself to only night sorceries (which is quite limiting).
- Using 2 staffs simultaneously will cause the 30% boost to stack multiplicatively, creating the highest boost that can be attained for a single magic school (Gravity sorceries can be boosted similarly, but lack the ability to upgrade the staff)
- This can only be done in NG+ or by getting someone to drop the second staff for you, as only one can be obtained per playthrough
- This staff has the same handle as the Carian Glintblade Staff, though it's a different color, and lacks a glintstone (or perhaps, it is just invisible).
- Sell Value:
200 Runes
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.

Staff of Loss Upgrades in Elden Ring
Please see the Upgrades page to understand the weapon bolstering process.
Requires regular reinforcement with Smithing Stone [1], Smithing Stone [2], Smithing Stone [3], Smithing Stone [4], Smithing Stone [5], Smithing Stone [6], Smithing Stone [7], Smithing Stone [8], and Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Sorcery Scaling is based on Int stat. The Int of the the character with the staff equipped at the time of posting the Sor Scaling is located in the (Int) to the right of the scaling amount. This will help to give a general idea of what staves are better at various Int levels until MAX is achieved.
This upgrade can be enchanted with Magic or boosted with Consumables. The Sorcery Scaling displayed on this table shows Minimum Requirement and Intelligence 80 as xx-yy.

When you use Night Maiden’s mists on the rotten crystalians at Haligtree, staff of loss never aggro them, CRS or lusat alway do. So this staff is truly invisible then. Wondering if there’s any other possible similar cases out there. Such as using this instead of CRS will even aggro enemies less.

That staff only -appears- to be lacking it's glintstone... but considering the gimmick of the staff is invisibility sorceries, that must mean the actual glintstone gem is just permanently invisible, as if under a constant 'unseen blade' effect to make it seem like an unthreatening walking staff.
Either way, the effect of this illusion alone makes this staff feel symbolic to me, as i am an enthusiastic sneak-sorcerer.
- Anonymous
for lacking a glintstone this staff is still pretty good. it almost feels like they fudged up when making it, and intended for it to be more like the meteor staff in usage.
- Anonymous
For NG before you get the second Staff of Loss, use the Jellyfish Shield
- Anonymous
Still outperformed damage wise if you dual wield staff of night, with death sorcs at 70/70 int/fth. However the night sorceries are far superior to the death sorceries for most enemies.
- Anonymous
30% is unreal. the base damage of most night sorceries isn't even bad to begin with

I hate when developers put misinformed information on their own items or hide information such as how one weapon does more poise damage than another weapon. But right now I'm going to rant about this absolutely, with no doubt, foolish decision to put "Boost invsibility sorceries" on this staff when it's barely even true.
Ambush Shard - No damage boost
Unseen Form - No duration boost
Unseen Blade - No duration boost
Eternal Darkness - No duration boost
Night Maiden Mist - No duration boost/damage boost
Night Comet - Boosted
Night Shard - Boosted
5 out of 7 don't even work with Staff of Loss. But despite all of this I think Night Comet is the best spell in the game, but that is no excuse for this misleading description. If Fromsoftware is going to keep being this deceptive about which spell boosts with what Staff/Seal, then how much time are we going to waste searching on the web? Give us a filter where it shows pictures of spells/incantation and text about what each staff 'n seal boosts so we don't have to search it up or actually don't lie in the description in the future, thank you.
Would be appreciated if they would added poise damage values into info so we can see the difference between spells, incantations and weapons.
- Anonymous
the text says "distinguishes itself when casting invisibility sorceries" as in it boosts night spells, how are there so many people misinterpreting it as cannot cast anything other than night spells??
The hard ass Bell Bearing Hunter at the Isolated Merchant Shack quickly let me know which of my potential mage builds was effective on NG 3+ haha. Night Comet and dual Staff of Loss was the only way I could beat him, so that is what I'm going to go with. :)
Godfrey Icon and various other magic boosting talismans and physick round out the build. Night Comet is a total nuke this way.
Do the spells from this staff get boosted by Dex and Strength ?
- Anonymous
According to it's description if you don't use this you lack discipline
- Anonymous
I assume I don't need to upgrade it if all I'm using it for is to get 30% bonus and have it in my offhand. If I use 2, then I'd only need to upgrade the main one?
- Anonymous
If you get hit by a spell from this try to move past it, and heal.
- Anonymous
Don't know if anyone else has noticed this but I found the Carian Glintblade Staff and it appears that they are the same staff but the Staff of Loss has the glintstone missing from the tip. It may mean that Caria and Sellia had a close relationship at same point
- Anonymous
Feels like a missed opportunity to have this or carian glintblade staff to be a dex/int hybrid staff. faith builds have a dex scaling seal in the form of the frenzied flame seal so what's stopping them from making this or carian glintblade a dex scaling staff?

This thing really trivializes a lot of otherwise tough encounters, lol. Because invisible sorceries are, well, invisible, bosses like Godskin Duo or Radagon will take every Night Comet to the face without hesitation. Equipping Godfrey's Icon, both Graven talismans, and Magic Scorpion charm (plus an extra Staff of Loss if you have it) sends your DPS through the roof. Charge the first Night Comet, then spam away. Dunno how good it is for PvP, but as a backup tool for mages, it could be interesting to mix in.
- Anonymous
I was more than happy to go to NG+ in order to dual wield these only to find it seems the bonus doesn't stack? Doing more damage with a Carian Scepter and offhanding the Staff of Loss compared to a +25 Staff with another offhand.
Miyazaki should have included a spell called "Invisibility" and have it not be affected by this staff.

Off-handing Staff of Loss to boost Night Comet makes quick work of Malenia. Its a bit safer than using Stars of Ruin.

"Despite the description, this staff does not block the casting of non-Invisibility spells."
Nothing whatsoever in the description suggests that this staff blocks the casting of non-invisibility spells.

Ambush Shard is already weak compared to other spells. Would be cool if it gained bonus from this staff.

"See the Sellia page for details on how to get it." The literal page for the item tells you to visit another page to see where to get it. This is why people dunk on Fextralife.
This appearance-wise seems to have been a Carian Glintblade Staff before the glintstone went missing.

Wish this staff could cast normal sorceries too, totally would use it just for fashion.
I genuinely don't understand why this staff doesn’t boost ambush shard too. It's a night sorcery, it deals damage. It should be boosted.
- Anonymous
If you wield two of these at 80 int, your effective spell buff for Night Comet and Night Shard will be 572. If you were to use one of these and Lusat's in your other hand, you will be doing 536 on the spells. In the scenario where you commit to using these two spells, it is incredibly worth using two of them, and will have the best sorcery dps in the game, bar none. Incredibly underrated staff, and I could see more people speccing into using just these for the sheer damage in the future. If you wanted to push the damage even further, you could tack on the sorcery boost talismans. With the 8% version, you will be hitting 617 spell buff, and if you add the 4% version on top you will hit 641. Adding Magic Scorpion and assuming pvp will be another 8% netting you to 692. If you drink a physick with magic damage, you will reach another 15%, putting you at 795. If you were to stand in a Terra Magica, you will get another 35%, putting you at 1073. Even with all these buffs, we can still go further, having a buff from Golden Vow, adding another 7.5% giving you 1153. Now, there is one final buff, a cooperator using Commander's Standard, to yield a final 20% increase, giving you a total spell buff of 1383. One thing I forgot to mention is that since these stack multiplicatively, I wasn't keeping the decimals in and dropped them for each increase, so 1383 is a little under the true total value. At the end of all of this, is it really feasible? No, but it is fun to theory craft and see how potentially busted this staff can be with these spells, and I think I was able to paint a good picture of how potentially busted it can be. There is no doubt that you can realistically hit 692 consistently though, which might draw your attention.

In my own opinion, I can't really see the point of using it. This staff's always been in the background compared to other, more meta-related staves such as the Lusat staff or Azur staff. I might be turning a blind eye here, though the Staff of Loss' function isn't clear to me. Perhaps you guys notice its purpose, but for now, it's practically invisible for me.
- Anonymous
... so who's to say this staff really doesn't have a glintstone, it's probably just invisible, too.

Staff of Loss +25 352 Sorcery Scaling at 99 Intelligence.
Night Comet Results against unaware Wolf at Raya Main Academy Gate (all staves maxed in results shown below)
Modifiers - Graven-Mass Talisman
SoL - 1468
Lusat's Glintstone Staff - 1384
Carian Regal Scepter - 1249
SoL and Lustat's - 1794
SoL and Carian - 1619
Dual wielding can make quite the impact but if you plan to only use one staff in a hand then this staff is completely viable if night sorcery plans to be your main arsenal.

Want to point out that the "invisible" spells don't get dodged by enemies A.I. making them very good against mobile bosses like Melania.

Works well as a left hand staff with something more potent in the right hand, boost still applies, if you have two of these one in each hand, boost stacks.

While this staff is able to cast other sorceries, despite its description, it may deal less damage with those other spells. Is anyone able to test this?

Inaccurate. Invis sorceries don't include Ambush Shard, Night Maiden's Mist, Unseen Blade, or Unseen Form. The only sorceries boosted are night shard and night comet. I tested it myself.

No need for me to use it then.

Perfect for an assassin Spell style. The invisible Comet and Shard are only reallly useful invading on dark areas/night time tho, making rolling through them a pain. You can see the purple trace slightly on well iluminated areas or outside.

What does scaling with Dex mean? So if my build is dex/int this staff will gain more scaling?

I wonder if "Invisibility Sorcery" includes Sellian magic like Night Comet and Ambush Shard. Other than increasing the duration, I'm unsure of how it could boost spells like Hidden Body.

The spell 'Night Comet' that can be found in roughly the came area behind one of the sealed doors appears to count as an 'Invisibility Sorcery' and is boosted by this staff.
