Category Physical Damage

Standard Damage is one of the Damage Types in Elden Ring. It is one of the eight main Damage Types and belongs to the Physical Damage category. Damage Types are a major part of the calculation that determines how much damage is dealt in Combat and are affected by many factors including your equipment, skills and temporary buffs.

Elden Ring Standard Damage Guide

Standard Damage (also known simply as Physical Damage) is a broad category and acts as a catch-all for all physically dealt damage outside of the three subcategories: strike damage 57pxStrike Damage, slash damage 57px hookclawSlash Damage and pierce damage 57pxPierce Damage. For any other Physical attacks that do not fall into these three subcategories, the damage will be calculated as Standard using the Physical Damage stat.

It's not that deep. Standard damage is there for people who want to opt out of most RPG elements and just hit the enemy.

      • As others have said, it has no business existing. Standard damage is born purely out of FromSoft's fetish to over-"balance" every form of damage at a very granular level, because let's face it: they weren't comfortable with making Slash the most common and thus the most versatile damage with fewest drawbacks.

The Haima Glintstone Crown does not, in fact, increase standard damage of your weapon scales with dex.
It increases your STRENGTH by two, giving you a small bonus in damage to weapons that scale with strength.
A minor error, perhaps, but it should be pointed out.

For some reason, spells dealing physical damage are not listed here. That includes, for example, Rock Sling, and Stone of Gurranq

To answer why physical is not the same as slash from a comment below: Standard is used as a catch-all but it is primarily “chop” type damage. Axes, halberds, great swords are going to chop rather than slash. Chop is bad at fighting armor but it’s way better than using slash and is also more versatile than strike. And fleshy, mushy enemies weak to slash but strong to strike are going to be slightly weak to chop type damage. Standard is the middle ground of physical damage types.

I'm confused as to why this damage type is in the game, at least for weapons. If it would be used for roars and shockwave attacks and the like, I could get it, but why does a sharp sword deal standard, and not slash?

A strange kind of damage. Basically, if it deals physical damage, but it's not a physical weapon, it's standard damage -- roars, breaths, earthquakes and the like. Yet, some weapons also inexplicably deal standard damage -- usually a heavy bladed weapon like an axe, halberd, or colossal sword, but also sometimes a... rapier... yeah, I don't know either.

                  • TIL: This entire time... I thought enemies were strong against my standard straight swords... I use 3 different straight swords and a rapier.

They deal standard damage, not slash damage.... I didn't realize that. I carry a Morning Star for Strike damage, thinking that it outclassed my sword's "Slash" damage vs Gargoyles and other rocky creatures. Nope. Standard =/= Slash. I'm better off smacking rocks with my higher damage straight sword than my Morning Star.

I always saw it in the numbers and didn't understand why. Okay.

Guys I think I understand why this damage type exists. Enemies will either resist this damage type or are neutral to it unlike other types where they either resist it or are weak to it. I don't think there is a single enemy who is uniquely weak to standard damage.

                      • In previous titles you will come into a situation that the weapon in your hand isn't effective against some specific enemies and you must switch to another weapon. Here Miyazaki decides to introduce a new damage type into the game, which should not necessarily be the most effective damage type against something, but should always be effective, and he didn't come up with a name better than Standard damage. It's not used to describe the damage type of these weapons, but it's used to make them versatile.

                        • Standard is confusing term. i think it is a edge with force going into a target and slash is an edge with force going perpendicular to a target. Chop is the only word i can think of describing it

What a astupid name for this damage type... Strike is good enough, pierce is self-explanatory, but standard? Really? Isn't it slash? Then it should be called slash.
