Fire twelve dark shooting stars that pursue foes
![]() |
Stars of Ruin is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Stars of Ruin spell is a homing projectile spell that targets nearby foes and deals damage.
Legendary sorcery devised by Lusat, primeval sorcerers.
Fires twelve dark shooting stars that pursue the target. This sorcery can be cast while in motion. Charging increases potency.
When Lusat glimpsed into the primeval current, he beheld the final moments of a great star cluster, and upon seeing it, he too was broken.

Elden Ring Stars of Ruin Guide
- Primeval Sorcery
- Since Patch 1.06, The target tracking ability of Stars of Ruin has been decreased.
- Stamina Cost: 33
- Deals magic damage
- This sorcery can be charged for extra damage at the cost of longer cast time.
- Damage can be boosted by 15% by wearing Lusat's Glintstone Crown. This comes at the cost of a 15% increase in ALL sorcery costs
- Due to the high number of projectiles, this spell can cause a lot of damage to a target's poise.
- High FP cost can make it difficult to justify using for low level characters. For pure damage, other sorceries may be more efficient but the high tracking, high poise damage, decent range, and relatively good magic damage of this sorcery shouldn't be underestimated for those that are able to pay the price.
- This sorcery becomes much more viable as a PvP sorcery if the character has the FP to use it regularly.
- Repeated testing shows that it is not possible to fully dodge this sorcery with a standard roll. A target will take some damage as its projectiles hit one after another and will hit between i-frames.
- This also makes this spell useful against faster-enemies that tend to dodge normal spells
- The range of this spell is significantly lower than Star Shower or Glintstone Stars.

I'd say it's still good, it's just that now you don't have to be good at touhou to dodge the whole thing.
Instead, you can just strafe to the side like most other spells

Magic Downpour + Stars of Ruins at mid range pretty much deletes anything that doesn't have high HP or any sort of magic protection.

Everyone talking about how awful it is to go against in PvP, meanwhile I'm just here using it for enemies that input read any other spell in PvE :v

Dodging inwards totally breaks the tracking this spell often allowing you to take low to no damage. Also it has 0 poise break if you're really annoyed just run through it and attack the mage. Eternal darkness, erdtree greasheild, any high magic resistance shield using magic shield grease or scholars shield 100% block this. Honestly an entirely over-rated and generally useless ability in pvp if you know how to counter it. This spell is only effective on people at mid range who dodge to the side instead of in. On my battle mage or my melee only took I literally dumpster mages that spam this. If they're using blood hound step just sever BHS is cheating anyway.

Even if you somehow keep distance this and Cannon of Haima are the only two things people actually fall for in pvp, otherwise a sorcery build is just support for your melee friend in a gank: sorcery in its current form just isn't reactive enough vs melee.
So if you nerf stars of ruin, what deterrent do mages have against katana lovers or blood/frost spam pokes on dual halberd, except build something else and level yourself out of a sorcery build? Actual guidance would be nice here.

Unless you fight with your bare fists in your underwear, then you can't play pvp.
The only form of PvP I hate, are those that cannot win, then waste your time running away.

PVE wise this is not very cost effective damage wise, but it makes up with its tracking.
Enemies that can dodge around most sorceries won't be able to dodge this one (works with ambush shard, glintstone sigil, and etc as well but they are weaker than this one when it comes to damage)

Cheapest sorcery in the game for PvP. Hope they nerf speed & damage, or even better remove this crap. Would love to fight unique mages but 99% just spam this and run away. So annoying.

***est sorcery in the game for PvP. Hope they nerf speed & damage, or even better remove this crap. Would love to fight unique mages but 99% just spam this sh*t and run away.
- Anonymous
I dont think its op, but it sure is annoying as hell. As a sorcerer - i never used it cause i dont want to associate with moonveil losers but also there are many more effective spells that doesnt require you to be boring and backing away all the time
- Anonymous
People who whine about this in pvp are the same people that use cheesy broken things like rivers of blood. Most sorceries are easy to dodge in pvp. This one isn't broken, it's just popular, because it's almost always some guaranteed damage. It's not the fault of magic users that almost every other spell is garbage in pvp. It's also extremely expensive to use.

Hold on lemme blood hound step away, spam this, chug, then somehow get cornered in a circular arena. Oh yeah I have 19 vigor but 80 mind. I think I should keep leveling up until I’m 170. What do you mean chugging is not allowed in duels? You PvPers and your unspoken rules. Well if you didn’t rush me I wouldn’t have to spam blood hound step. You’re just mad about all the build variety. Invasions shouldn’t be in the game anyways.

I don’t understand why people are hating on this spell. Yes it’s powerful and can be cheesy but it has its limitations, the huge FP cost for one.
And to the larger point of so called “overpowered” abilities or weapons, so what? The game gives you these tools and if you want to have an easier time or are struggling with something then you can use them. If you want to feel more heroic or whatever don’t.
I can’t speak to the PvP aspect because I only play the game offline but if PvP action is what you’re looking for then this game isn’t exactly the best place for it, with lack of balance being the least of the problems.
What folks are describing here is literally being upset because they brought a knife to a magic missile machine gun fight. You know perfectly well the fight wasn’t fair so don’t get upset if/when you lose.

Paired with Godfrey Icon, Graven Mass Talisman, and possibly (if your setup allows) Radagon Icon (unless your Dex is at least 70, then no benefit) and wearing Lusat’s Glintstone Crown with a staff in one hand and something with Bloodhound Step in the right hand, you can be a boss wrecking machine. I just solo’d Maliketh (no ash summons or any summons) with that combo, and it’s amazing for fast moving, agile bosses. I also used this setup for Godskin Duo, again with no summons and it SLAYS.
What I like most about it is that, although it’s powerful, I still felt like I needed to learn the bosses’ moves and actually get good at timing and dodges. It didn’t feel like a Cerulean Hidden Tear nuke, it was just a very potent tool. Still took tons of tries and I learned their moves throughly, just a great asset in the toolbox.
I only really see this spell mentioned for PVP but it’s incredibly powerful, fun, and visually stunning in PVE as well!

I don't know what they were thinking putting something like this in the game. Between this and so much more it at least appears like the PvP element was an afterthought and they didn't spend much time on making things balanced or reasonable.
- Anonymous
I have this spell memorized specifically to deal with invaders. We don't want you here, so deal with the spam and move on with your life.
- Anonymous
This spell is amazing in PvE as well. For any fast moving bosses, spam and dodge. Beat Maliketh 1st try.

I love hopping on to Elden Ring pvp only for my game's title to suddenly change to "The Touhou Project". Love it. Very cool. Very nice. No salt here no no no NOOOO.

This spell is so cheap, I forbid myself to use it. Unless I want to finish the last person in a gank group. Watching him rolling away, squealing like a pig before his inevitable death is so satisfying.
- Anonymous
I do think it should have slighty slower recovery for useful it is and easy to spam.
- Anonymous
Thankfully this spells do not deal poise damage, soo jump attack their faces or roll catch them with running attack
- Anonymous
does this receive the damage boost from Rotten Winged Sword Insignia and such?

This spell *annihilates* Malenia. She can't dodge it effectively and eats the entire barrage almost every time. Just focus on maintaining as much distance as possible at all times and cast away while she's walking towards you menacingly. Which she likes to do a lot when you're far from her.

what a fun and interactive spell to counterplay in pvp, thank you miyazaki

If you use this spell in duels combined with bhs, you’re a b*tch. Just putting it out there.
- Anonymous
I want to pair this with Millicent's Prosthesis to see how hard it ends up hitting after 1 or 2 volleys.
- Anonymous
The fact that this is hidden at the end of a quest line and needed for an achievement is one of the most brain dead things I’ve see in while
- Anonymous
I used this with spell buffed with:
Lusat's Crown, Lusat's Glintstone Staff +7, 62 Int, Magic Scorpion Charm, Radagon's Icon, Terra Magica, Magic Shrouding Cracked Tear, and Hidden Cerulean Tear.
to kill the dragon tree sentinel. As soon as his health bar pops up, just pop Terra Magica, sip your physic, and send the stars at him until your FP bar dries up. I had to dodge one or two flame thrower attacks, but this spell melted and stuttered him with every cast.

Causes Melania to spam waterfowl dance. Not recommended for that fight unless you have a good coop partner.
- Anonymous
Not that good of a spell in my opinion, for such a high cost it doesnt give as much damage as i think it should. Its tracking is brutal though, so if your fighting something that moves fast or a lot then this will still get them and it can make them stagger pretty easily after which you can get some extra hits in.
So although the damage isnt as high i think it should be for the cost, it definitely has its uses in combat.
- Anonymous
I just dueled a guy who literally just backpedaled and spammed this for the entire fight; it’s literally impossible to not get hit at least a little bit so you’ll just get chipped to death the whole time
- Anonymous
I use this to finish off low health players that run away from me, as it is really difficult and tedious to catch roll spamming at times but maybe I can get better at that.
- Anonymous
I'm not sure but Silver Mirrorshield with some extra magic defense might help to mostly nullify it's damage
- Anonymous
i dont play pvp so i can comment on that regard but pve wise this spell is very fun on a int/faith build. i use ancient death rancor followed by star ruins and rush into enemies. the combination of those 2 spells are just the right speed and do good stagger/posture break and damn near nuke some bosses
- Anonymous
Last night I met the truest ever maidenless team: one guy spamming this and the other spamming elden stars constantly to the point where the only valid defense was level geometry.

Does this work well on bosses. Only used str and dex build but really want to try magic. I've used incantations using the order seal such as flame cleanse and the rock throw thst you get from beast man. And those help alot but I have so many spells thT just sit around. I would like to keep my build for the most part. I use loerttes weapon which is super ligit and i use this this as my primary, starscourge greatsword and yes rivers of blood. I also love twin blades like the peeler and Eleonora pole arm. I use alot of others that I fully maxed or am one stone away from max. I also use black blade and scorpian stinger dagger duo. I don't want to waste the dragon stones. So I like the close up but want some good range soreries to pare with the weapons I use.

Best used sparingly for bloodhound step spammers or people breaking etiquette in duels and healing.
Anything spammed in soulsbornelden games takes away from the fun in my opinion.
- Anonymous
I don't know much about PvP but for PvE: This is very good against a certain Blade of Someone, Goddess of Something. The tracking nails her dodges, and it'll deal good damage. The FP cost is definitely pretty high for the output though, you need to have a fair few flasks on hand on top a good Mind investment. It's also advisable to buff yourself up with Terra Magica/Talismans and debuff her with Ranni's Dark Moon as much as possible to get the most out of it, that is assuming you're able to catch a break and stop running for dear life.
I didn't use the spell much before this battle, but it really came through for me. I can see it being pretty great for all those other super-mobile bosses like her that slower, wind up spells like Comet Azur or Meteorite can't handle and have input reading dodges for everything else.

If they nerf Bloodhound step , I will respect my char to Mage build and spam this skill.
Now more than half Mage already have Law of Regression to remove magic barrier (seal 0 weight , still cast Low of Reg without faith).

I see rivers of blood user, I use this. Fight spam with spam.

How to turn elden ring into a bullet hell simulator:
Pop a large Glinstone scrap, cast this spell, best used at close range. Follow up with astel r2 spam, nebula or even moonveil if your at a low point in life.
But lets be real it doesnt get lower than this unless you use rivers of blood...
Pure proof that levelling intelligence in-game is not the same as levelling intelligence in real life.

I wish the people who spam this in ganks met that int requirement irl
- Anonymous
If you're having trouble against this in PvP, Silver Mirrorshield is only 3.5 weight and will decrease damage taken by an additional 10x.
Keeping a couple swaps on hand has always been essential in pvp. Given how prevalent regular magic damage is, keeping it equipped in your 3rd left hand or so is probably preferable.
- Anonymous
Boring in pvp, try something more fun and shower once in your life maybe
- Anonymous
I might have found a way to dodge this spell. I was invading and the host spammed this like 3 times and instead of dodging I ran right thru it straight towards the caster while spam rolling and got hit only once. I'm not sure if my poise affected this because the one missile that did hit did not stagger me.
- Anonymous
There is very little in the game that can't be solved by gaining distance and spamming this spell. This is a REALLY good spell, even at it's relatively high cost.
1. It has aggressive tracking, so you can use it while running away from mounted bosses.
2. It's delayed cast counters input reading enemies like to do.
3. It's a charge spell, so Godfrey Icon talisman buffs it like Lorretta's Great Bow.
Basically if you can't Azure Comet cheese something, you can probably Stars of Ruin cheese it.
- Anonymous
You literally just have to run at an angle towards the caster to avoid this. Not sure why there's so much moaning and complaining about it, lol.
- Anonymous
As much as this spell is strong, keep in mind that you can make brutal anti mage builds in this game. Still annoying to deal with but I'd rather not be the mage when the magic resistance monsters with Tree Sentinel shields come rolling in like machines, on a mission to **** yo frail wizard ass up.
- Anonymous
This spell is entirely dodgeable without taking dmg. Rolling into it instead of to the side or away increases your chances of messing up the tracking of the stars. My friend and I tested this I dumped my whole fp bar into him without him even taking chip damage.

So basically, the lore for this is that the Carian Royal Family banned the primeval current sorceries (Founding Rain of Stars Comet Azur and Stars of Ruin) from Raya Lucaria for being too OP.
- Anonymous
If you can't dodge roll out of it, it doesn't make it OP or busted. You can use bloodhound step or get really fancy and counter with Eternal Darkness. They won't be able to keep up that rate of fire anyways unless they have ridiculous amounts of FP to burn. Try finding counters to strong attacks before immediately jumping to conclusion and saying it's OP.
- Anonymous
With lower FP cost now, this spell is very good in PVE as well. Works great against fast moving bosses. Just spam this with your mimic, roll and dodge.
- Anonymous
Rennala uses this in her bossfight, deals a ton of damage. Her most dangerous move
- Anonymous
love it when people allow me to spam this 40 times because they'd rather strafe at 20m rather than approaching me ty for free win
- Anonymous
*When Lusat glimpsed into the primeval current, he beheld the final moments of a great star cluster, and upon seeing it, he too was broken.*
pft, yeah, in Pvp I imagine
- Anonymous
Getting it because of other mages spamming it. i plan to spam it back.
answer to beating it: Use cover.
Use eternal darkness
use magic parry shield and parry the last one (youll trade chip damage for basically crit damage)
Run until their out of FP
Use lightning if your a faith build. you can cast multiple ranged incantations while the mage still casts this and most have projectiles so fast they cant dodge quick enough.
use a dex dash (bloodhound or that other one)
if youre a strength guy...
Keep them close range. you should be able to 1-2 shot them anyway. see that wand come up? get close and smash.

I prefer night comet to this in pve, especially with staff of death in the offhand. Npc invaders don't even try to dodge it. It's more powerful and cheaper on fp.
- Anonymous
Complete cancer. This is used more often by gankers than rivers of blood is.
- Anonymous
Lol 3 star version you can't even fully dodge.. I started running things like beast roar as a close the gap in PvP... Don't sleep on people spamming any of these tracking monster spells
- Anonymous
Honestly. I just bloodhound step through this, quick step, or if I'm feeling cheesy carian retaliation. The 1st two options make the battle feel more anime though

Everyone know what will happen when pvp with Mage type (exactly in duel sign).
1. That guy drink physick for 15 sec unlimited FP
2. That guy spam this skill for 15 sec like the meme random bs go
3. Instantly win the fight , or instant lose because the opponent use Carrian Retailia
pls guy , your Mage build has High Int , pls play like you have Int as your character has.
Bruhhh

seeing all the thumbs down here on certain comments gives me the feeling that people who use this in pvp know it's cheese, but they are upset to hear it or in denial.
Here's an obvious note, you can still enjoy it knowing that it's a little busted, it's not like you're breaking any rules or anything. all the negativity for pointing out such a basic fact is silly.
- Anonymous
OP against newbie invaders but anyone remotely skilled Will destroy most if not every stars of ruins user
- Anonymous
People *****ing about this spell being undodgable either aren't dodging it right or haven't actually played against it. Going against it if you spam dodge you are at most just going to take chip damage, it's also got a pretty short range so if you just retreat a bit you can out range the mage, then punish them with a bow.
- Anonymous
This spell is the reason these games should have 100% magic defense shields
- Anonymous
I think it's tracking needs to be buffed imho. This one guy rolled and didnt get hit by all of it so Id say it's a clean 7/10. I really feel that this spell needs its INT to be lowered to make this game more accessible
- Anonymous
Mediocre in pve because of the multihit reducing damage and the high FP cost, but insanely powerful in pvp. If you get someone down to low health in a fight this spell is literally a win button, they can do absolutely nothing to avoid it unless maybe they time bloodhound step just right. Also very hard to overcome someone with Lusat's gear spamming it if they start at range, you will be at half health before you can close the distance so you better pray they have low vigor and you're using a powerful weapon to make up the damage.
Furthermore the high FP cost really isn't even much of an issue in pvp because you can literally drink from your FP flask while the spell is still going and be covered, and the other guy is gonna die before you run out of flasks. Alternate between this and collapsing stars if you want to get real nasty with the cheese
- Anonymous
Some dude invaded and used this spell to somehow stack death blight, not sure how the old exploit worked but assuming this is related.
Unless he was cheating which is possible since the same invader just magically appeared right on the host on two different occasions at the same location when other invaders didn't
- Anonymous
I’m gonna feel bad for you players when they nerf alot of the magic. This one should be a limit of one cast. And if you cast another it dispels the current active one. Completely busted.
- Anonymous
Either people are trolling or this is the most overrated spell itg. Collapsing stars costs half the fp and does almost identical dmg. For 38 fp almost every spell out damages it. I don't see any reason to use this spell ever at least in pve
- Anonymous
This definitely needs to have its tracking toned down a bit or increase the endlag. Spell is just too easy mode.

This spell right here is why I always keep a bloodhound step dagger in my inventory.

You can get locked out getting this spell, I don't know how or why but I never found Sellia until she was chained in a prison and she won't interact with me no matter what.
