If anyone wants to try Sword and Board in PvP I highly recommend it, be prepared to lose a lot at first though as the damage and range isn't as impressive as most other weapons you'd see in arena. But the idea of the playstyle is about patience and staying calm against other players, as well as understanding spacing and stamina management. I'm not kidding when I say it'll give you a new perspective in fights. High guard boost medium shield w/ parry and Greatshield Talisman are your best friends (and maybe Green Turtle Talisman) because blocking damage can be just as useful as dodging.

Maybe give it a try sometime if you wanna challenge yourself or just like the look and feel of a classic Knight build. Also make good use of throwables to give yourself more options.

I love many weapons like the regalia of eochaid get buffed by godfrey icon, but I can’t help but to think that should’ve been the case for ornamental straight sword.

I often play sword and board in pvp. If I beat the sweaty double lance dude with storm stomp, they always switch to double sword to smother me. 2 swords are 4 times better than 1 sword. Elden ring math in a nutshell.

So apparently the reason these do so much damage dual wielded is because it has a 1.95 damage modifier compared to around 1.35-1.50 of other dual wielded weapons

fromsoft really took an L with the weapon/armor design in this game. Only a couple ultra great swords aren't giant chunks of rocks on sticks. I feel like im the only one that thinks a functional looking blade is far cooler then a giant 600 pound rock. Hopefully we see something like the silver knight straight sword in the DLC. Easily the best straight sword theve designed

Feels like this whole weapon class has trouble justifying its existence.

Being slower than thrusting swords and katanas while also being shorter is not a great start. It can't hope to match the status potential of curved swords or thrusting swords. It has a better damage type, but that matters less than it used to since even pure Dex builds can use elemental infusion. Oh, so I'm supposed to use it as a fast option on a Strength build? Well. You could. If you want more reach than Handaxe while sacrificing some speed.

A lot of people bring up Square Up for stance-breaking, but limiting yourself to one weapon type just to get Stance breaks when Ash: Phalanx, Lion's Claw and Stonebarb Crystal Tear exists just feels unnecessary.

If you wanna use Straight Swords, go nuts, but I find these both aesthetically boring and mechanically unremarkable. Which is probably fitting, honestly, for the Generic Swords.

Elden ring has 4 different strength int enchanted straight swords, but the only dex one is st trina’s which is far weaker than it’s peers

Highly underrated as an offhand weapon, like how many people use daggers, to mix up timing of their attacks and finish people off. The lack of speed makes it probably a little worse in most cases, but in others the extra range and damage can often make them the better choice for finishing off your opponent

Gone are the days of the straight sword paired with shield, parry tool, or crossbow meta. All hail dual wielding these bad boys!

And while straight swords may not rule the roost the way they did in ds3, two of these ashed and built correctly can stand toe to toe with most other builds in pvp. The only real drawback is the range is more balanced this time and it doesn't have a great run down move like pokey weapons.

Seriously, given how well rounded this class always is id bet these are the weapon types the developers play with when they're testing the game. How else is it that straight swords are always good and axes almost always suck at launch?

I like them without powerstance. I like that there are many different R2s. Carian SS is so versatile with very good poise breaking R2 and an option for interesting build around its block mechanic, Warhawk is very fun to play, Coded and Regalia of Eochaid have skills that combo well with normal moveset and look awesome.

In Dark Souls the straight sword was a jack of all trades workhorse weapon. Perfectly at home with a shield in the other hand, great balance of speed and power.

In ER they're much more specialized. They have exclusive access to a PvE easy mode in square off, and their powerstance attacks have almost no damage penalty (most L1s will do ~140% of an R1 but straight swords will do ~190%). So they are still great choices, but kind of pigeonholed into the new fighting styles ER brought to the table.

Whats up with the hitboxes on these when dual-wielded? You have to dodge immediately to not get hit, but when you do dodge you just get rollcaught by the same attack you just dodged.

It seems to me straight swords in ER are simply not interesting? What is the point of them if there is such a crushing great epee or an even faster rapier of Rogier? The estocs and katana are longer. The Guardian's spear-sword is almost as fast as straight swords, but longer, with much higher damage.

As a result, I did not find a straight sword to my liking. I really like carian sword in appearance, but his skill is strange.

ER has two straight swords (weathered, cane) whose numbers are too low to be anything but bad, but not low enough to be funny. I miss the broken straight sword.

This patch made sword and board even worse. Faster and more powerful heavy weapons make them extremely difficult to punish and even harder to set up parry. Also the damage is still weak compared to any katana… and all of katanas drawbacks are negated by simply two handing, unlike straight swords. A great sword should easily win a trade against my small sword… but it shouldn’t be faster and spammier. I have so many fights where my opponent never once gets poise broken, the hyper armor on so many weapons is overkill.
