Elden Ring Tailoring Tools Notes & Tips

What Garments can you Alter in Elden Ring?

Specific Helmets and Body Armor pieces in Elden Ring can be altered as long as you have the required Items for altering. You will need a Sewing Needle and Tailoring Tools to be able to perform alterations to your basic garments. The Gold Sewing Needle is required in order to be able to alter demigod armor pieces.

Both the Sewing Needle and Tailoring Tools  can be obtained from the Demi-Human Chief, located in Coastal Cave, western LimgraveMap Link. This is a boss encounter. Defeat the Demi-Human Chief and it will drop these items. With these tools you can now rest at any Site of Grace to access your options and you should have the option to Alter Garments. This should display your Armor pieces before and after Alterations. Select which garment to alter. Altering will also cost runes, so make sure you are happy with the alterations before confirming. Altering your garments with Boc, however, will be free, but you will need to progress through his questline before this action is available.

To gain access to Boc's altering services, go through his questline until he moves to the Lake Facing Cliffs Site of Grace. You will first need to locate him northwest of the Murkwater Bridge, Boc is disguised as a tree and calling for help. If you perform an attack on the tree, the spell breaks and Boc returns to its original form. You will then need to give him the Sewing Needle and Tailoring Tools. He will be at the  Coastal Cave. After giving him his supplies he will then move to Liurnia of the Lakes where the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace is. He will now offer his seamster services to you for free.

Great idea but so badly implemented it's hardly worth it. If it doesn't get a major overhaul in the dlc giving us a ton more options I'll be very disappointed.

      • Anonymous

If they ever add modifiable armor color schemes they should add it as an option to boc, make boc the seamstress of drip

        • Anonymous

I mean its acceptable that we cant do Things like get a Cape from one set to another, but why cant we change color.

          • Anonymous

This feature feels incomplete and could’ve offered the ability to change/add color to armor/garments. I really hope Fromsoftware does something about this garment altering feature and add to it -OR- improve it in the near future.

Waste of a feature, its supposed to simplify armours yet only for a few, would prefer if alt Banished Knight removed the fur on the back but nothing works :(

damn, was kind of hoping this thing would allow you to wear good stat but ugly armor and allow you to apply an armor skin on top of it, but this entire armor kit is useless, why did they bother implenting it anyway

                  • Anonymous

Nearly useless feature. Most all armor pieces that can be altered are chest pieces, and most of them just remove a cape if it exists.

We could’ve had armor color changes, adding or removing parts of armor like plating on arms, switching between renewed and damaged armor, the list goes on. What a waste of a feature, feels only partially finished.

                    • Anonymous

Be nice if you could flat out swap looks of armor so you can keep the stats/abilities you like but still max fashion souls. Give it a significant cost in runes would be fine to offset.

                      • Anonymous

Would be nice if we could alter gloves, things like switching left/right if they're asymmetrical or the sleeve style so you can wear some gloves without rolling up your chest armor sleeves, or vice versa.

I have lots of armor sets at this point, and the only thing I can change is the Samurai chest piece to add or remove some ugly hay. What is the point of this thing? It seems like the devs tacked it on late and completely forgot about it.

                          • Anonymous

removing the cape of the armor, removing the feathers of the helm...and it reduces the stats..wow...nice features

A table of changeable armors would be nice. So far the only armors I found alterable are the Prophet Robes and Perfumers Garb.

i wish armor alteration was actually fleshed out. imagine altering malenias chest piece and gaining tiny rot wings like she does in phase 2.

I simply need a regular transmog over here.. I like my +8 arcane from Silver Tear Mask, but if that's the price for wanting higher arcane while using rivers of blood, I don't want it.

Altering your armor changes its stats from lowering its weight and resistances to restoring its original stats

                                    • Anonymous

The 'alter garments' feature feels criminally underused. Very frustrating to have it boil down to just removing the cape on a few chest pieces. If only we could remove the silly chest-shields of the knight armour or the bull-goat chest's ugly horns, among other things. Feels like a feature that was tacked on late in development and wasn't really fleshed out.
And I really don't like losing defensive stats because I think a chest piece has an ugly cape.

Is there an achievement with any alterations you do, or needing to do it a certain number of times? I'll make some alterations if it earns me an achievement, but other than that I don't see a need for a cape being removed from an armor piece.

                                        • Anonymous

Four pieces of armor have their altered version only available via drop, and can't be obtained via altering the regular version.
These are the Banished Knight Helm, Banished Knight Armor, Fire Prelate Armor and Aristocrat Garb.

Be cautious when tydying up your inventory, don't sell these!

The character stats on the right hand side of the alteration menu is completely useless in this instance. The alteration is not going to change anything on that menu. They should have used that space for the armor stats so we can more easily see what we are changing without having to exit that menu and sit at the Site of Grace and pull up the alteration menu then exit that and pull up the armor stats menu. Totally got that one wrong.

I've only found 2 so far that can be altered. The Godrick armor and the Land of Reeds.
I cannot tell the difference between the before and after pictures.

A couple confessor pieces can be altered, as well as the Godrick knight chest, those are the only I e found so far

                                                • Anonymous

Seems kind of crappy. The only piece of armour I could alter I found so far loses it's cape and gets reduced resistances but doesn't get any benefits (such as becoming lighter).

I feel like they could have done much more with that, for instance allow changes that let you trade physical defense for elemental resistances or adding special effects to the armour in exchange for stats. Right now, it only seems to make stuff worse in exchange for looks.

                                                  • Anonymous

How exactly do you alter helmets tho? This is obviously a feature buried by access to some item but I'm not sure what, given that you can loot an (Altered) banished knight helm from the dudes in stormveil.

                                                    • Anonymous

I just wanted to ask because I do not believe the community as a whole has even acknowledged this yet, but does the tailoring kit even do anything? I have numerous armor sets and currently can only modify the Vagabond Chest Piece and Commoners Garb. I have seen "altered" pieces out in the world but cannot revert them, or do much of anything with them. Honestly starting to think this whole touted tailoring mechanic is useless. I am begging to be proven wrong, or told about a questline that will open up everything else but at the moment that seems unlikely.

                                                      • Anonymous

What does this actually do; is something else required for it? None of the armor or clothes I have can actually be used with it.

                                                        • Anonymous

But not all armor can be altered..
Chest pieces I know can be altered so far are Beast Champion, Land of reeds and Commoners garb

Would be nice to see it expanded. I currently have 3 different knight chests, and some other items and none can be altered.

Seems to be a bug (at least for me) where the “select garment” slots are empty… possibly due to the fact I picked up gold tailoring kit before standard maybe?

                                                              • If you're curious about what it does, I got it and at a cost of 500 runes could hide the cape on my chest piece (the vagabond starter one) it also reduced the weight of it by 1.0 and reduced stats to match. Couldn't alter anything else on me.
