Tanith is an NPC in Elden Ring. Tanith is the head of the Volcano Manor, and asks the players about joining forces against the Fingers. If you decide to join her quest, you will receive particular missions as well as access to some new Npcs.
I am Tanith, the proprietress of this house. An honour to have you.
Tanith Location in Elden Ring
Tanith can be found at Volcano Manor. [Elden Ring Map here]
- This NPC moves
- This merchant can/can't be fought
- If defeated, drops: Consort's Set
- Can be given Dancer's Castanets.
Tanith Questline: How to complete Tanith's Quest
- When asked if you would like to join the Volcano Manor family, say yes and she will give you the Drawing-Room Key. This will allow you to access the other dorms and meet the other NPCs in the area.
- Once you enter the room with Rya, there will be a Letter from Volcano Manor left on the table for you along with a Recusant Finger. Read the note and return to Tanith where she will tell you to assassinate Old Knight Istvan.
- In order to assassinate Istvan, you will need to invade him back in Stormhill, next to the Divine Bridge. [Map Link]
- Return to Tanith and you'll be rewarded with Magma Shot.
- Reload. In the room with Knight Bernahl (second/third left door in hallway) will be a Letter from Volcano Manor on the table for you. Read the note and then assassinate Rileigh the Idle in Altus Plateau.
- Return to Tanith and you'll be rewarded with the Serpentbone Blade.
- Reload. In the room with Knight Bernahl will be a Red Letter on the table for you. It tells you to assassinate Juno Hoslow, Knight of Blood. His invasion mark is located in Mountaintops of the Giants. [Elden Ring Map here]
- Return to Tanith and you'll be rewarded with Taker's Cameo.
- Note: If you have defeated Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy before returning, the reward will appear on the table on the same spot as the letters.
- Once you have completed her assassination quests, she will ask if you would like to meet their lord. Accepting her request takes you directly to a site of grace immediately before the boss Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy.
- Once you have defeated Rykard, return to Tanith and speak to her once more.
- Once Tanith has disappeared from Volcano Manor, you will find her back in Rykard's boss area feasting on his corpse.
- At this stage you can give her Dancer's Castanets that you receive from Patches at the Shaded Castle, although this doesn't seem to any known effect.
- She can be killed. Doing so causes Tanith's Knight to invade you. Upon defeat he will drop Aspect of the Crucible: Breath and Tanith's attire, Consort's Set, will be found where she left;
- Note: It is unconfirmed whether this is her final destination. Reports have shown she will still be eating Rykard's corpse at the end of the game. Receiving the Dancer's Castanets from Patches will not continue her quest after Rykard is defeated.
Dialogue in Elden Ring: Tanith
Introduction
- Aren't you precocious. We rarely receive visitors to the Volcano Manor without invitation. Fascinating. And not unlike another guest we had long ago...So, Tarnished, have you ever harboured doubts? About the burden of grace, and the dogmatic ramblings of the Fingers? If you have, why not join the Volcano Manor, and fight with us? Rise with us, against the Erdtree.
Introduction after journeying with Rya
- Brave Tarnished, welcome to the Volcano Manor. I am Tanith, the proprietress of this house. Rya spoke well of you. "A warrior of promise", I believe she said. Perhaps you are prepared to make a commitment. Will you join us here at the Volcano Manor, and resist the tide? Why accept the burden of their grace, or be fooled by the dogmatic ramblings of the Fingers? Rise with us, against the Erdtree.
Join Volcano Manor
- Your decision is most welcome. Now you belong to the Volcano Manor family. The drawing room lies down the hall. Make yourself comfortable. I am Tanith, the proprietress of this house. An honour to have you. (Gives the Drawing-Room Key)
After you read the letter
- Did you read the letter left for you? That is the task the Volcano Manor desires you enact. You will be compensated once the deed is done. Good luck. If you are loath to hunt your own kin, so be it. But you must leave this house at once. This is a war against the Erdtree. We have no place for the meek, nor the luxury of keeping clean hands.
After completing the first quest
- You've completed your task. I am pleased. Now you are a recusant true, and a full-fledged member of the Volcano Manor. This is your reward as promised. (Gives Magma Shot). Never forget. That the recusant fights to tread the path of the champion. The way is tainted, but for this very reason, it is the true path to valour.
After completing the second quest
- I see you've performed another task for us. Here is your usual reward. Please, take it. (Gives Serpentbone Blade). Now, perhaps the time has come to tell you. Of the true ruler of this manor, Lord Rykard. The Erdtree blessed the Tarnished with grace. But it was all too meagre, in the fate of the enormity of their task. The Tarnished were forced to scavenge, squabbling for crumbs. Like the shardbearers, vying for power in the wake of the Shattering. Our Lord, indignant, had refused. To scurry about, fighting over what miserly scraps they allow us. If the Erdtree, and indeed the very gods, would debase us so, then we are willing to raise the banner of resistance, even if it means heresy. We at the Volcano Manor, under Lord Rykard, have sworn no rest until it is done. If you follow this heroic path, one day the Lord will see you. The Lord's visits with our champions are always a spectacle. I cannot come a day too soon!
After completing the third quest
- I see that you've stayed the path of champions. This is your usual reward. Please, take it. (Gives Taker's Cameo). Perhaps you are ready. Might you see our Lord? Our Lord will no doubt welcome you. Another kindred spirit, treading the path of champions.
- (See the Lord) Now, close your eyes for a moment. I will transport you to the Lord's chamber.
- Farewell, then. May your visit be fruitful.
After defeating Rykard
- You... It's true then. You've defeated out Lord. No, I must thank you. Our Lord was yet weak. You have taught us that. Defeat is not the end. Our Lord is immortal, and will one day rise again, stronger. Until then, I must stay the path, and do my part.
- I will leave the Volcano Manor before long. I suggest you do the same. I will miss these encounters. The champion who walks the tainted path shines all the more. I always was an admirer.
- This is farewell. Perhaps we will meet again, along the path.
Zorayas's Form
- Did you see her? The girl, Rya... with her true face... Well, if she confided in you the name Zorayas, then perhaps it is not my place to speak. But as her adoptive mother, I ask of you. Please, be kind to her. Look after young Zorayas. Her true visage belies the purity of her heart... Honestly, I hardly deserve the sweet child.
Zorayas's troubles
- I should have known something was wrong. The signs were clear enough. Well, Zorayas has placed her trust in you. All the more reason I must tell you. That some things are better left unknown. Besides, no-one should be blamed for their heritage. Think about it. We are resisting the ways of the Erdtree itself. What matters one's lineage in such a crisis.
Zorayas's absence
- And she has no scouting duties now. Has she gone off in search of answers? Why won't she just listen...
- May I ask your aid? Not as the Manor's proprietress, but as Zorayas' mother. If she discovers the answer to her question, and it causes distress, have her drink this potion. To purge that which would cause her pain. (Gives Tonic of Forgetfulness). Yes, I know. My wish is a grave disrespect to her. No different than the Erdtree's impostion. But I've no choice... It must be done.
After giving Rya the tonic
- I will never be a good mother. My heart is too frail. Our Lord must have known this all along. My meekness is all too clear...
- Sweet Zorayas, have I earned your scorn?
After killing Rya
- My gratitude for your forthrightness. If you would...allow me some time alone.
When you find her eating off Rykard's corpse
- Oh, you... Allow me some time. Our lord's carcass is vast and not easily consumed. Dear Rykard, please find purchase within me, I wish to be your serpent; your family. One day, let us devour the gods together.
- (Gives the Dancer's Castanets) What is it? I have no need of that. I must continue devouring my beloved lord.
Elden Ring Tanith Notes & Trivia
- Before Tanith came to Volcano Manor, she was working as a dancer. Rykard came upon her and made her his consort, making her the only human to remain on his side when he became the serpent of blasphemy. Tanith has shown to have a strong obsession for Rykard.
- The Consort's Mask dropped by Tanith raises your dexterity by 1.

Her backstory about being a dancer reminds me of the Dancer of the Boreal Valley, who also was a dancer before Sulyvahn took a liking to her.

what happens if you don't progress her questline, finish the volcano dungeon and kill rickard? does she still appear eating his corpse?
- Anonymous
nothing really gets to me in fromsoft games but I physically cringe every time I hear her cannibalizing Rykard
Kinda upsetting there’s no interaction about burning the Erdtree.
- Anonymous
For people that missed this on their first playthrough like me, I read in patches questline notes (in step #9) that you can actually go find patches after completing the *first volcano manor assignment* and he will request the target Tragoth for the BULL GOAT armor?! I will be attempting this on my next play through to be certain...!
- Anonymous
Not sure she actually dies when you attack her. I did a wimpy knife stab and a health bar appeared. Only a small faction of her health was chipped off before she faded away and her knight invaded. With all the illusions, projections, puppets, mimics, duplicates, and whatever in this game, it wouldn't surprise me if my one little stab didn't actually kill her. How you still manage to get her outfit if she's not dead, I don't know. Just pointing out an observation.

Such rich narrative arcs in this game: "Thanks for getting Rya's necklace back. By the way, how would you like to kill three dudes for me even though we've just met and you have no idea what my motivations might be."

I hear you get new dialogue if you give her a fork when she’s eating rykard. Comments can confirm?

I finished Rya's quest and left her alive so she set on a journey. Then when Tanith left the manor, since Rykard was dead, she left behind the Tonic of Forgetfulness. I guess the game just wanted to give me a lore item even if I can't use it anymore.

there should be an age of the serpent ending where you become lord of blasphemy and let the serpent devour the world. like the mending rune on rykards corpse or something

something interesting i just found: the greek name "Tanis" which apparently means "serpent lady" sounds like it could have been an inspiration for Tanith

So for some reason she wouldn't let me continue her quest lineafter killing old knight istvan, but after progressing through to mountaintop of the giants (clearing the red mark Melina put on the map) she allowed me to turn in the quest and continue with the assassinations

if you use extreme repentance after killing patches back in murkwater cave after giving her the castanets, she has new dialogue, possibly extending the quest...
"Dear Rykard, please find purchase with in me,
I wish to be your serpent; your family.
One day let us devour the gods together."

Summoned mimic tear with spear on this fight, thing runs as fast as it can into the lava at his feet and dies in a few seconds... so that happens sometimes
Hey guys, just by the way. I recommend you DON'T kill Tanith (or Patches for that matter) yet unless you wanna NG+ soon. Tanith and Patches are the only characters who you have to kill to get their items, and, are also the only characters who have such a weird and wonky questline ending. Fromsoft NEVER does this, at least not in Elden Ring. Even the most unimportant characters who have no consequences at all for being killed still have a way to give their items peacefully, like D's Brother.

I honestly thought she was the actual mother of Rya until she said otherwise.

Weird. I'm playing a new NG and I haven't killed Rykard yet, but I progressed Rya's quest to the point where she drank the tonic and now when I talk to Tanith I have the option to give her Seluvis's potion. Is this something from the new patch? The page above doesn't mention anything about the potion. I don't want to give it to her, as I'm saving it for the Dung Eater. Anyone else willing to try and see what happens?

She is such an interesting character. She is the leader of an organization, however well intentioned, that murders many innocent tarnished. Her devotion to Rykard is fanatical, to the point where she even feasts upon his corpse. However, she is also shown to be a genuinely caring mother towards Zoryas, despite the circumstances of her birth and her true form. Not that it is particularly hard to like Zoryas, she is an absolute sweeting, but nonetheless Tanith's adoption of her and tenderness towards her child makes Tanith an interesting and round character.

in my game, i bopped tanith with the envoy greathorn skill for 1.8k damage, she didnt die since her hp bar wasnt empty but she still said her dialogue and i got invaded by taniths knight+reloading gave me her clothes. kinda wacky

I came back to this quest after killing Rykard but before killing the mark that rewards you with the Serpentbone weapon. Do not know what triggered it, but a bunch of itmes were laying around Knight Bernahl, including the assassination letter that yields the Serpentbone. So I do it, come back, and serpentbone is on the table across from Bernahl and Tanith is still down eating Rykard. Alas, I cannot get that next letter to get my talisman, as it is not appearing on the table where the other letter did. Strange.

In my top 3 favorite characters, alongside Sellen and Fia. Her ending is really unfortunate. I really wish we could persuade her to get over Rykard's death and resume her dancing job after giving the castanets. Perhaps even being able to see her with her dancing attire. That would have been nice.
- Anonymous
I would advice on just killing her in the snake room, there's an additional boss fight. Don't know if Patches will hate you afterwards, but you can always try ;)
- Anonymous
She seems based on the Roman Empress Theodora, wife of Emperor Justinian I The great, who was also a foreign born...uh "dancer" and was known to be a capable ruler in her own right that would run the empire when Justinian was away, best known for saving Justinian's crown by refusing to flee during the Nika riots and urging the Emperor to kill all 30000+ rioters.

Giving her the Castanets DEFINITELY does something. It is, in fact, what makes Patches turn into a boss fight in his cave. Just tested it right now. Maybe if she's already dead, it skips that step, and he moves straight to the cave anyways.
- Anonymous
It's kinda funny how the Castanets do absolutely nothing. It's as if all Pates simping was no use. I honestly think the whole thing was a satire joke and to just give a bit of lore on Tanith. Maybe they'll add to it, but it's more funny unfinished.

>GRRM and Miyazaki reveal the Volcano Manor storyboard
>”So Rykard brings over a dancer, Tanith, as his consort”
>Everyone nods
>”But then he turns into an immortal snake and starts eating everyone, right?”
>Murmurs of agreement
>”They also live on top of a medieval BDSM volcano village filled with lizard people”
>The room falls silent
>”What if Tanith is so turned on by this that they birth their own lizard offspring, and when he is slain she feasts on his corpse to once again entreat eternal life upon them?”
>Everyone bursts into raucous cheers and applause

Why do we have to kill her to get that crucible breath spell? Fitly Fromsoft....
- Anonymous
Anyone think its kinda lame how they handled giving her the the Castanets? She just says some dismissive dialogue and pretty much doesn't change much from what her "default" questline is. I'm not expecting some sunshine and rainbows ending but they added the whole part of patches questline in a post release patch and it just seems pointless. No extra lore or interesting dialogue, maybe just a hint of Patches having a thing for her or something.
- Anonymous
If you turn off the music and increase your volume, the audio of her eating the remains of Rykard surprisingly provides some very nice ASMR material.
- Anonymous
ok im confused how do you get to moutaintop for the last assassanation for tanith before killing Rykard, i know through leyndell but thats the next part of the walkthrough after valcano manor, dont make sence
- Anonymous
To note for those checking this guide: you are unable to complete the questline if you kill Rykard. I finshed the 1st assassination before killing him, but since I killed him before grabbing the 2nd Letter from Volcano Manor, it will not spawn. She just stays down in his chambers feasting on him continuously. This is important to know if you want access to the Serpentbone Blade.
- Anonymous
I think her model is bugged out a bit to where her head turns all the way around to face you when you try to give her the castanets. She normally doesn't turn when you talk to her while she eats Rykard but she did for me when I gave her the item.
- Anonymous
What happens if you talk to Patches before you talk to her and then go do Shaded Castle to get the item you give to her, then talk to her before she goes into Rykard’s chamber?? Same outcome or no?

Why is there a crucible knight working for her? I thought they were servants of Godfrey?

So, I just finished the last assassination quest. If I go back to Tanith to get my reward and have her transport me to right before the boss, can I just teleport back out without fighting him? I was planning on doing the dungeon so I can experience that content and farm runes/items. I was planning on getting the Takers Cameo and then running the dungeon properly instead of skipping it straight to the boss. would also like to finish all the NPC quests from the manor before killing the boss. Thanks.
- Anonymous
Why people necessarily assume her questline is incomplete? It ends with her either struggling to rebuild (her Lord and presumably new champions b/c he is "yet not strong enough") and continue the crusade, or she is killed by you. Not earth shattering outcomes, but enough given what passes for endings. Also, there's implication that her obsession with the noble cause against the Erd Tree (and most of her behavior for that matter) is a bit disingenuine, and it's more that she's obsessed with her Lord, who was her only source of self worth. Finding her desperately eating his corpse is a bit more sad and the final decision a bit more weighty in that context.

I killed tanith after blasphemous, didnt get to do zorayas optional quest(but finshed until tower and wanted me to kill her but didnt),progressed up until fire giants(but didnt do forge),finished haligtree, and noticed tonic of forgetfulness at taniths chair, and talked to corrhn at mtg

In order to assassinate Istvan, you will need to invade him back in Stormhill, next to the Divine Bridge. [Map Link] link doesn't work

I didn't complete the first assassination quick enough and now the marker is gone. Yet Tanith still tells me to carry it out. Somehow I must have broken the quest.

I found Patches when I was around level 50 and hit him a little too hard that he didn't even get a chance to surrender...
If the Dancer's Castanets are required in order to continue Lady Tanith's questline (assuming FromSoft updates her quest in a future patch, which I expect they will), I'll have to wait until either NG+ or start a new character. Lol
- Anonymous
With the Tonic of Forgetfulness now showing up at her chair once you beat Rykard and she's eating his head, I wonder if the right step to advancec her quest is to first give her the Tonic of Forgetfulness, and THEN give her the Dancer's Castanets you received from Patches. She forgets about Rykard and can actually focus on remembering what the Dancer's Castanets are instead of just dismissing it if you gave it to her pre 1.04 patch. Sucks that you can't retrieve the Dancer's Castanets from her once you give it, I don't know why it even disappears from your inventory if she doesn't seem to want to take it or care about it.

I killed her during my first play through but now seeing updates to kenneth haight/loux and patches' questlines I am certain they will finish her questline too. So I regret killing her. I just hope the future reward is not something too big

After i got the Consort's Set, I go back to Manor, see her in drawing room, talk to her, exhause the dialogues reload the room and she leaves Daedicar's Woe an item stats that has INCREASE DAMAGE TAKEN

So they still didnt touch her quest? gonna have to wait like 3 months to have all the (few) quests working. bruh

killed rykard before doing the assassination quests and tanith is currently eating him underground, but the marker for the assassination is still there. can i do the job and still be rewarded?
- Anonymous
If you don’t want to side with her, but still want to kill Rykard, go to Raya Lucaria and there’s a giant wheel elevator. At the very bottom of it is an Abductor Virgin enemy that, when killed by it, transports you to the manor. You can proceed to Rykard from there.

So... Do I break any other questlines if I join her merry bunch of weirdos? I refused because I was worried that this might mess with the Ranni questline or something like that and she told me to get lost.
- Anonymous
I ignored her quest line and only came back after beating the final bosses.I gave her the castanets when she was feasting, she said she didn't need them. I killed her, and was invaded by her knight. After I killed him I got "Aspect of Breath" incantation and her armor set drops where she is feasting after the knight invader is defeated

Attack her after giving castanets and rykard dead and you will get invaded by her knight and he drops a spell and if you kill him next to the blob thing you will find her outfit.

Is there any indication that you are SUPPOSE to kill Tanith for all that stuff and the invasion?
Obviously, its the ONLY point where she is killable as otherwise she is in a neutral zone, but otherwise is there any other indication?

I gave her the Dancers Castanets as she was feasting and she only continued feasting, her dialogue was something to the effect of I have no need for that I must continue to devour our lord. At this point I had already spared Rya and finished her questline.

anyone tryed to give castanets to zoryas? she will be waiting in manor dungeon untill you talk to her after rykard and not give her tonic before and in manor main after tonic

As of right now, after patch 1.30.2, though unconfirmed by me personally, you can give her the castanets, but when you kill rykard before doing so, her questline wont continue, so for another playthrough, get the castanets first, and give them to her before killing rykard, and see if that changes anything.

So I haven’t visited the lord of the manor yet, I have completed all the assassination quests. If I do the thing in the Mountaintop of Giants, isn’t that exactly what she wants? Wonder if doing that first will influence her quest/dialog. Has anyone tried this?

if someone can try the pratling pale to change the diologue and then give her the castinets it would be great to see what happens,
i gave her the castinets prior to using the pratling pale and they were consumed so i will have to go through again on another ng to try it in that order.

meh. kind of irritated that this whole thing fails if you kill rykard early. it makes sense, but also it feels strange that there seems to be no consequences for joining these guys that everyone seems to hate, and take on assassination quests to dudes that as far as you can tell haven't done anything wrong. initially i thought this would cause bad blood between me and the more erdtree aligned dudes at least. but it seems like i really shoulda just done it cuz i would have lost nothing. considering how much of a big deal they make joining them and how ****ed up what you're doing is, i almost feel sort of misled by thinking the game would have more internal logic than it did...if you're reading this and you've yet to do the quest: just do it. the only thing you save by not is time.

I accepted the contracts for Vargram and Hoslow, set them aside because I hadn't entered Lyndell yet, then went through all of Volcano Manor and beat Rykard. When Tanith left the Manor, only Hoslow's red marker stayed on the map. I mean, guess it makes sense that none of them would stick around when Rykard s gone, but it sure would be nice if Tanith didn't leave if you still have active contracts. I know this is typical for Souls questlines, but it's still frustrating considering how much they seem to have tried to reduce these kinds of annoyances in Elden Ring

Tanith's quest is a massive pain. You can't finish her quest until you get all the way through Leyndell, kill Morgott to get access to Forbidden Lands, Consecrated Snowfield then Mountaintop of the Giants. This means you can't kill Rykard and finish one ending of Rya's quest until then otherwise it will end all the Volcano quests prematurely. All because Juno is in the middle of nowhere.

Has anyone tried to carry over the castanets to NG+? I’m wondering if it stays in your inventory and you can give them to Tanith earlier in the playthrough?

If you attack her at Rykard's body, you will be invaded by Tanith's Guardian. After defeating the Guardian, you receive the Aspects of the Crucible: Breath incantation, and you can loot Tanith's outfit next to Rykard's body.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that if you kill Rykard before finishing all of Tanith's quests you miss out on the rest of them. I only did the first assassination attempt after killing Rykard and got the lava spell inside that side room as Tanith was giving me her "I'm gonna leave now" conversation. After that I didn't find any further letters with more assassination attempts and Tanith was down in the boss room. So if you want all of her mission rewards make sure to not kill Rykard.
It kinda sucks cos I now wish I got the poison katana, but that's the risk of playing blind.
so, i'm confused. it says here that if you kill her too early, you can't finish patches quest.
i exhausted all of patches dialogue at volcano manor and he left.
i then went and attacked her and killed her crucible knight without realizing there was more to the patches thing.
then i reas patches moves to shaded castle and gives the dancer castanet to give to tanith. . but she gone now.
i was still able to finish patches quest and get his gesture, but i can't give her the castanets. but then the wiki page says giving her the castanets has "no known effect", somthat means it doesn't matter?
i got the breath from the knight and her clothes is that all that was left?
