If you have the Arrow’s Reach talisman equipped you can see farther with the telescope (press up on the d-pad to zoom in, down to zoom out).
Also, you can stop using the Telescope by doing another action (crouching, jumping, switching items in your left hand, etc.) so pick the one that works for you (backstepping/rolling is often dicey).

Just to clarify, if you have this hotkeyed (so it gets used by pressing square like your other equipped items) you can just press again to stop using it. If you use it manually from your menu, you have to reopen your menu and "use" it again to put it away. However, if you press circle while using it, you will cancel it by backstepping. If you press any direction and circle, you will do a direct forward roll (regardless of if you tried to roll left/right/backwards). So if you are on a cliff edge, backstepping with neutral circle is your best bet.

Is using this item in any way better than manual aim with bows?

PSA: to put it away, select it again from quick items, or in the inventory if you don’t keep it in equipped items. Pressing the back button will launch you off a cliff.

It's good for scouting ahead, checking for loot or danger in a new area. Reminds me of playing STALKER with the binoculars. You can achieve effectively the same thing with a bow or crossbow, however.
