This is the page for the sorcery: Thop's Barrier. Click here for the Ash of War: Thops's Barrier.

Thops's Barrier is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Thops's Barrier spell allows the user to create a defensive barrier against spells. Updated to Patch 1.07.

The lifelong pursuit of Thops the Bluntstone.

Creates a magic forcefield that deflects sorceries and incantations.
Hold to continuously create barriers.

Future generations will learn. They will know the foolishness of
the sneering sorcerers who ridiculed this theory, little realizing
that it was in fact a discovery worthy of a new conspectus of the
academy.

Where to find Thops's Barrier

Where to find Thops's Barrier:

  • Looted from Thops's body at the end of his quest..
  • You must give him the Academy Glintstone Key first.
  • Once he has it, fast travel to the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace of Raya Lucaria Academy, you'll find him dead outside the room. Go outside and turn right, you'll find him, sitting in a chair. [Map Link]

Elden Ring Thops's Barrier Guide

  • Glintstone Sorcery
  • Stamina Cost: 10
  • Note: In Patch 1.07, the continuous FP for charging or holding down the button of this sorcery was changed from 7 to 0, changing it's FP Cost from 7 (7) to 7 (0).
    • This is only when your remaining FP is 0, otherwise it will consume FP as normal. In other words, as long as there is enough FP for the initial cast, thops barrier can be consecutively cast untill stamina runs out.
  • Thops barrier involves taking a long initial wind up to create a non damaging spell burst. Hold casting will cause the character consecutively cast with less windup than the initial cast.
    • The initial windup is generally unsuitable for reaction casting even with the maximum casting speed. The consective cast windups also present a less exploitable small opening that seems unaffected by casting speed (needs testing)

What can be deflected?

Thops barrier can deflect most projectile based sorceries, incantations and even some weapon skills. Ex: glintstone pebble, triple rings of light, bolt of gransax. Most projectiles will change their flight path to avoid hitting the player, whlie others may knocked back a short distance before continuing to chase the player (ex.rancorcall). Caution must be taken as projectiles are still 'live' even after being deflected and may cause damage after finding an opening or exploding on a nearby object.

Physical projectiles such as arrows, even those generated by spells (ex. stone of gurranq, rock sling), will not be deflected. Some projectiles will appear as physical but will count as a spell and vise versa (ex. Pest threads will be deflected but morgotts golden throwing knife will not). Mist type spells, all dragon incantations and melee type spells will not be deflected.

Lastly you can deflect your own spells (and possibly ally spells) but these spells will always be sent straight up (needs more testing)

(List of deflectables coming soon!)

Would be rad if we got an anti-magic spell actually worth the slot in the DLC. Maybe not "Tranquil Walk of Peace" since that's basically just magic fun-police, but both this and Eternal Darkness are too situational and mechanically janky to really carry the day.

Any anti-magic spell by default is situational since it only works against a fraction of the game's enemy pool, but the fact that they work only inconsistently on different spells and have pretty gaping holes in their defenses means that you're better off just boosting up your elemental defenses with items or magical buffs to free up the slot for something better.

I'd love to see maybe a persistent, 30-45 second wall of light that blocks spells or something, and you can spawn several up to a certain limit. Make it so people and physical projectiles can pass through them, but mages who want to sit at max range and spam have to reposition and play around it if they want results. Make it a double-edged sword so that the caster can't just sit behind them like a turret and spam, themselves.

Why wasn’t this a protective barrier that you could cast around you and last for at least 7 seconds? That alone would have carried the entire spell into a high rank sorcery

        • Anonymous

Probably the flashiest spell in the game, just wish casting speed didn't ruin this spell so hard. I've deflected a Cannon of Haima with this and it was SO damn cool, yeah I could have rolled through it and consumed no FP, but on cool factor alone it was worth it.

I like to imagine once my guy became elden lord he renamed RL academy into Throps Academy in hos honor. Then executed all his murderers and cut them off from the erdtree permanently as punishment.

I feel like this needs a certain amount of vdex (casting speed) to go from meh to great. I don't know what the value is, I just know that if its too low the homing spells from the raya lucarian mages can still get through between pulses. If anyone know what that value is it would be greatly appreciated.

My boy Thops was an Abjuration Wizard all along. Thops didn't deserve the end he got, but at least we can carry on his legacy with a genuinely impressive spell. Rip the goat Thops.

                • Anonymous

My boy Thops made a cheaper, mobile version of a spell that was created by the despair of an entire lost city of magical genius'.

Shame he was too bluntstone to realise that developing the ultimate anti-magic spell, while inside the academy of a powerful faction that runs on magical dominance, would probably get him killed.

Please FS increase the casting speed to make channeling the spell protect you from all magic projectiles at maximum casting speed... It's almost never used because the one thing it's meant to do, leaves you wide open to projectiles despite draining both your fp and stamina. It makes no sense... Please just make the spell viable with a casting speed buff :(

If the DLC is a time skip, I hope this console cuts is developed. I really want a Blunthops Glintstone Crown.

Why not just use Eternal Darkness? This spell requires you to be casting it continuously for it to work, so you can’t cast other spells. Eternal Darkness lets you cast it once while letting you power up some stronger spells to counterattack with. You can also get ED earlier by just running to Caelid, lighting the towers in Sellia, and bypassing the Bloodhound Knight. Maybe if it reflected the spell back at the attacker it would be worth it?

                        • It states that the cost for "Charging or holding down the button" was reduced to 0.
I've only tried the spell once but I don't remember it being Chargeable or even "hold"-able, it just made my character cast it multiple times and take 7 fp each time.
I was hoping it's downside of 7 fp would be offset by only being a startup cost and it could be held infinitely to stop like Comet azur.

WOULD be good in PvP if the average mage didn't have 300 ping where the spells desync into you through the barrier.

My man thops developing a counter to not only all sorceries, but also all incanations. Rennala got silenced, rykard got nullified, astel got canceled... you think a barrier wouldn't work?

Does anyone know which of the Elden Beast's attacks this works against? I heard it works for the elden stars move, but what about the rain of homing missiles or the four golden sword waves?

                                • Anonymous

Not exactly a practical spell compared to your other options, but certainly not bad considering that it's actually really effective at what it does.

                                  • Anonymous

Eternal Darkness is slightly more useful in general, they are both eclipsed by Carian and Golden Retaliation.

                                    • Anonymous

I always assumed the other sorcerers killed him to prevent his discovery from getting out. Lodged into shields, it would have revolutionized magic defense to where any soldier could master it. The Carian ash only does damage if you're already high int and isn't useful against incantations. The others don't stop spells. But Thops changed the game. Now literally anyone could shut down spellcasting.

                                      • Anonymous

If this was just carian retaliation without the swords but was able to parry regular attacks I would use sword and staff constantly and never turn back.

Thops spell can literally save you from some of the Elden Beasts attacks
Shame he doesn’t live to see the fruits of his labor

used thops barrier vs elden beast's elden stars and it reliably ricochets elden stars into the floor of the arena, completely neutralizing it. really really useful for its low cost+requirements and spammability.

                                            • Anonymous

Does not block frost spells, gravity magic nor lightning strikes from above. Will shoo pyromancies and other sorceries reliably

                                              • Anonymous

I read this item description differently from others, as it seems to be from Thop's perspective, given the resentful tone. This idea of it being a discovery worthy of a new conspectus might be a delusion of his.

                                                • Anonymous

This spell will affect your own projectiles as well, though in rare cases. Using Thop’s Barrier on Glintblades you cast will alter their trajectory, usually pointlessly but it looks cool. It will also push aside (and potentially give slightly more range to) founding rain of stars, oracle bubbles (uselessly pushed upwards), great oracular bubble (also pushed upwards), rykard’s rancor (can be useful to spread out explosions), magic downpour (pushes projectiles forward, maybe useful), and flame of the fell god (still useless). These spells you can cast and follow up with Thop’s Barrier to alter them. The barrier works on other spells, but can’t be cast quick enough to affect the projectiles (any “stars” spell projectiles are too fast for example).

                                                  • Anonymous

This seems to work on most energy based attacks even ones Eternal darkness does not, but it has a decently long start up. With max spell speed I wonder if you could cast it fast enough to be immune to spells entirely until you stopped casting.

                                                    • Anonymous

Considering the description of the spell. That thops was a failure or bad student, that there are crazy hot heads In the academy… these foolish sneering sorcerers as the description states, it’s possible that they killed him out of jealousy. He had a ingenious break through that counters their magic. Despite his lonely office outside the main building. They didn’t want him to succeed. The key you give him so he can pass has a different description vs the one you use. The one you use is brand new. The one you give him says that the key remembers it’s previous user and the indolent( lazy) are not welcome. Right off the bat, they knew thops should not be there and he was doomed to intense mage bullying and eventual death once he was about to become successful.

                                                      • Anonymous

Works against the elden beast's golden barf. Thops the Chadstone created a spell that slaps away a god's attack

                                                        • Anonymous

The lore implications of this are awesome
for anyone confused, it's sort of like if you found a way to completely destroy energy, completely ignoring the literal first law of thermodynamics. It's insane that something as powerful as the primeval current and glintstones can just be turned off.

                                                          • Anonymous

Did some testing on this after the patch. The duration of the barrier is long enough that holding it IS continuous and would deflect most spells 100% of the time. Unfortunately, the deflection path isn't consistent. As user below mentioned, some pebbles from those sorcerers will sneak through because their trajectory isn't fully redirected. I've fought another mage in PvP who used this spell against my Stars of Ruin and it didn't deflect a single projectile. I've also tested this on Oracle Envoys and it fully shoves all of their bubbles (even the ones that spawn at your location) away. As it currently stands, this spell just isn't worth using over Eternal Darkness for any reason. If they made the initial startup cast almost instant, fixed the deflection issue, and allowed for a quick recovery to combo into another spell, it might have viability over Eternal Darkness.

idk i really feel like fromsoft needs to make this spell just a continuous channel type of spell instead of continuously bursting

                                                              • Compared to the Ash of War version, this spell has:

+ What looks like double the AoE size
                                                                + Lingering AoE
                                                                + More reliable deflection
+ Doesn’t cost as much stamina from repeatedly deflecting spells
+ The ability to move while casting, albeit slowly

                                                                - Costs 7 FP per cast, as opposed to 0.
                                                                - Slower startup

It’s great for its intended purpose, deflecting spells.

I would have totally used something like this, if the startup were shorter and the cost of casting it were cheaper.

                                                                • Anonymous

You did it Thops. They laughed at you, called you an idiot and a failure. It got to you at first, but you brushed it off, got your ass back into the academy and worked your ass off. You died in the process, but you made one of the greatest discovery's in academy history.

And now those jive-ass, stone-masked, burger-king-looking-ass *****es have to live with the fact that the "bluntstone" out-finessed them, and achieved more than they could ever dream of.

Sit down you little punks, and get to learning about Thops the Gigachad.

I'm gonna pour out the finest Flask of Wondrous Physick for my main man Thops. This one's for you pal.

                                                                  • Anonymous

After briefly testing it against the glintstone sorcerers just inside Raya Lucaria, I found that the duration is indeed increased, but it's still not continuous. I was deflecting most attacks, but some of the glintstone pebbles still snuck through my defense and hit me. I did observe one such pebble hitting me and then changing direction as though it had been "deflected", but that may have just been a fluke. Nonetheless, it's a much better defensive option than it used to be.

                                                                    • Anonymous

After patch 1.04 it seems there is a strange bug with this spell. As long as you hold the button down you can continuously cast, even after you run out of FP. So as long as you have enough FP to cast it at least once, you can hold the button down to cast until you run out of stamina. Guess that might be useful in situations where you are low on FP and someone is spamming spells at you.

                                                                      • Anonymous

It got buffed in 1.04 patch. Will be testing it later. The description made it seem as if you can channel the spell active constantly, however you had gaps in the barrier in truth and would be hit. 1.04 patch says it increased the radius and effect duration. So maybe the new duration length truly keeps the barrier up constantly protecting you. Let's try it out.

                                                                        • Anonymous

If anyone's curious why this is considered such a big discovery, consider that magic in Elden Ring is heavily tied to taking power from celestial forces. Incantations get their energy from divine entities whereas sorceries use glintstone and the Primeval Current for theirs. Both are essentially borrowing energy and turning it into some other form.

This barrier is crazy because it just deletes magic. Repurposing magic isn't unheard of, like Carian Retaliation, but those just turn spells from one form to another. This straight up nullifies them.

The implications of this sorcery are fascinating. Thops literally found a way to turn off the gods, what a lad.

                                                                          • Anonymous

The way the description says that Thops was worthy of his own Conspectus makes me so sad, because I can genuinely imagine it. I'm picturing an entire group of sorcerers that have spells specifically to counter other sorcerers and negate their spells.

                                                                            • Anonymous

It's very bad to use as a spell, but that's because a mere student invented it, then perfected as a parry variant. One of very few ways to deflect spells was born from "just a simple sorcerer"

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I tested on the mages in raya lucaria that spam swift glintstone shard. Most of the shots got through despite a me constantly casting.

I got the spell without sending him to Raya Lucaria, I think if you interact with Sellen and then tell him youre working under her he gives you spell otherwise idk. I bought all his spells when I first met him just to be sure since im doing 100% and told him I met with Sellen. He's alive still and Im debating on giving him the key since I've already got his spell.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Makes you basically immune to magic if you keep casting. There might be gaps, but I could just walk up to enemy mages while spamming this and not get hit by anything.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Terrible spell. I'm pretty sure it's a meme about poor thops lol
I did find that putting thops barrier on shields was actually great since it costs 0 fp to use and comes out instantly with the parry but this one is a joke.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

this spell isn't complete and thops was by no means a powerful mage however what the description basically states is that thops could have been a pioneer of a new magical conspectus. So I'm not quite certain but I'm pretty sure this spell is basically a prototype that could have lead to many great things (in the same way there's 4 or so glinstone shard spells) but poor thops wasn't enough to do it alone and there was nothing to carry on development so its likely not a mistake that this spell is so weak.

but just for a moment, imagine erecting a large magical forcefield around you and your summons to protect from a dragon incantation
and that is likely what a spell like this could have been were the mages not so against it.

I hope perhaps in a dlc we may get a spell like that id like mages to get some sort of wide barrier defence

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Ironically enough, the Carian school of magic made the exact same thing except far superior in the form of Carian Retaliation (a shield ash of war that allows you to convert incoming magical projectiles into glintblade seekers). Poor Thops just couldn't catch a break even with his life's work, a bluntstone indeed.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

This spell is comically bad to the point that I'm convinced it's more about the lore of Thops being incompetent than it is about having the spell in the game.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

As long as you hold down the cast button , this will chain-cast forever, even once you run out of FP. Still not very useful though, especially since it's not too hard for an enemy hit to sneak through and interrupt.

                                                                                                              • I was hoping that with this spell i can make something like a magic swordsman character that blocks with magic and fights with sword, but this spell is sadly a joke. It slows your movement and doesn't really block anything half of the time. I wish Thops had more time to work on this spell more...

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

It would be actually useful if they change it so that it maintains the barrier while you hold the button and continuously consume FP rather than flashing it over and over while you're praying that the attacks will be miraculously blocked.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous
