Thrusting Swords are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Thrusting Swords strike a balance between moderate damage, fast attacks, and good reach while piercing and slashing Enemies.
Thrusting Swords can be modified by a number of Ashes of War to change their Skills or Damage Type, so play around with them and see what you like.
Thrusting Swords can perform feint attacks. Press dodge while charging a heavy attack, and another animation will happen. Carian Sorcery Sword excluded. The Frozen Needle feint fires a projectile.
Thrusting Swords can be powerstanced with the newly added Main-gauche, a dagger introduced in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Note: Patch 1.08 The speed of Thrusting Swords' crouching attacks has been reduced. Poise damage has also been reduced, but only for PVP.
Note: Patch 1.13 Increased poise damage of dual wield attacks of all Thrusting Swords (in PVP)
Shadow of the Erdtree only added 1 new sword to this category, the Carian Sorcery Sword.

i just don't like rapiers, I dunno the little poke sticks are stupid

No thrusting sword for arcane builds is kind of sad, doesnt even need bleed or any status just a good reason to use it on an arcane build
- Anonymous
I would have loved a short but massive gladius-style thrusting sword that would have compensated for is poor reach by being all out STR and with heavy stagger. For the roman/greek shield and sword playthrough. It could even have had some slashing attacks to mix it up. It would have required a very close quarters and responsive playstyle based on stance break and parry, while still having the benefit of hiding behind the shield for when that's appropriate.

Why rapiers in this game has a slower r1 start up compared to ds3?
- Anonymous
A weapon type that sees the lowest and the highest of skill levels. Any joe shmoe can run bhs cleanrots or antspur shield poke and see great success, but those who truly dedicate themselves to these blades will find their true beauty. The skill expression possible with these is insane, Rogier's, Estoc and the Frozen Needle especially all have great heavy attacks that make feinting even more powerful.
To you small few dedicated thrusting sword fans who don't abuse the hell outta these things or pull them out to secure a victory, rock on.

They could have made the animations more visually attractive than just 5 full consecutive pokes

That poise damage in the offhand doesn't belong on toothpicks that bounce off shields. Make it make sense Fromsoft.
of this catagory, cleanrot has the best general use,
antspur has the best for status builds(you can even slap poison on it from poison mist for triple status)
and frozen needle is the only thrusting sword where you can both use the built-in feint and get a free-ranged heavy.
most of these weapons perform well against single targets, usually, larger ones due to the games hit registry.

any reason to dont use Cleanrot Knight's Sword? its the highest range, the most damage and the best scaling
- Anonymous
For some god forsaken reason, they buffed the poise damage of these in 1.13 despite how oppressive they were (Primarily Cleanrot) for nearly 2 years prior to the DLC. If for some reason you need a refresher why, they did 108 on a one-handed attack which forced you to wear at minimum the full Tree Sentinel set with Bull-Goat's Talisman, then they nerfed them down to 88 meaning you could get by with something like Tree Sentinel Chest and Legs mixed with the Circlet of Light with No Gauntlets and the Bull-Goat's Talisman (which is much lighter letting you reinvest points out of Endurance into other stats) and now they are back up to 104, so they basically reverted the nerf. Why are they flip flopping on this? Sure, they fixed the bug that made them do full poise damage on the first successive attack, but that was only really a contributing factor that made them so good, not the main reason. The main reason(s) are that they are fast, light, deal Thrusting damage to take advantage of counter hits, have long range, and did surprisingly high Poise damage despite all those upsides. I thought the devs learning why they were so unfun to play against was the reason why they nerfed them in the first place, guess they had me fooled.

What alot of people don't know is that these tend to have a higher crit modifier, so using these over daggers ensures more stance breaks and more consistent damage

PVP virgins in shambles cuz they can't dodge a sharp stick.

so what reason do these have to even exist? what niche do they fill like at all? these don't have a single quality that another weapon class doesn't do better

The less beautiful moveset of all weapon types and poorest way to deal damage. But I had to use it against a grafted scion just because it wielded 2 too. It died trusting in its thrusting attacks while it was repeatedly thrusted by my simple estoc.

These weapons are made for applying status effects. Poke while behind a shield. Do some nice critical hit damage, that's all. Pretty good imo.

From just really said fck off to thrusting sword enjoyer with this dlc
- Anonymous
Thrusting Swords are sadly pretty terrible in PvE in 1.12 -- the attacks are the same speed/slower than, far less damaging/staggering, with dagger-tier poise damage, and have a much smaller and narrower hitbox than Axes, Straight/Curved Swords, Hammers, Spears, and pretty much any other weapon in this weight class, even Flails. Don't even mention powerstancing Thrusting Swords -- can't even combo L1 > L1 on a f*cking dog because it's so damn slow and does no stagger. Basically relegated to shield-poking, off-handing, and Rogier's Rapier.

These stupid things in offhand are undodgeable - you cant roll out of 2 pokes in a row. Cant believe how absolutely awful of a designer you have to be to make 270 degree pokes that deal counter damage, more poise damage than literally anything and have the quickest moveset after cruved swords.
Either this or the twin blades competing for the cringiest weapon class. Use a giant sword like a man, if you can even lift it

So just to check. Overall, if you're not thinking about status effects like with the Antspur, the Cleanrot Knight's sword is probably the strongest overall in terms of flat damage stats, bar certain scalings on the Rapier?
- Anonymous
Kinda wish at least one of these had a scaling other than dex + strength. Probably will see such a weapon in the dlc

Thrusting swords are cool every other game, and every other game they're totally op.
DS1 - cool
DS2 - the most op weapon class in the game
DS3 - cool
ER - for 1,5 years the most op weapon class in pvp, after 1.10 still on of the most op things in the game as main weapon and totally busted as offhand.
I dont know, maybe ER is really Dark Souls 2 2

effortless rollcatches and too much damage. i was killed in 4 hits from a poison cleanrot sword at 60 vigor and erdtree favor +2, not the thickest armor in the world but not cloth either. the wielder did not have all the poison buff effects either. just four pokes of an absurdly long incredibly fast, and easily connected weapon, game over. that means even with the severe damage penalty of poison affinity, each attack was doing about 500 damage, not counter hits either, i was just trying to get away.

God I miss the Rapier stance weapon art from Dark Souls 3, now it's split up into two separate aow's
If you use this weapon class it's probably the only time you're thrusting anything
- Anonymous
I have no idea how you'd nerf these things without killing all appeal in using them, because they're too good at too much.
One of the best shield-poke tools for a Strength build, amazing status tool both power-stanced and one-handed, and requirements are generally low enough to be friendly to casters looking for an emergency melee weapon.
How do you balance something that's a top pick for nearly every build type in the game?
- Anonymous
if you use one'a these bad boys on your offhand something GOTTA be wrong with you
Love how balanced the offhand thrusting swords are. Already one of the best weapon classes in the game and they’re not affected by 1.10’s 1st hit poise damage change when in the offhand.
Fair and Balanced Thrusting Ring
- Anonymous
Hey together,
what is the best weapon in this shitty game, I personally like thge Assault Rifle and Automatic Machine Gun
- Anonymous
Severs balance problems. Poise damage too high is one. This first issue is made worse by the fact that two handing gives way more poise damage/stagger time and improves strength scaling. There should not have been a strength scaling thrust sword, certainly not the longest in the class either. The PS move set is also a problem since it hits 3 or 4 times for almost full damage on a single button press. The PS move set also leverages more range and properly tilts the body so it’s harder to hit as well. This makes the PS move set a beast at trades and will often narrowly avoid taking damage on trades at all. And ofcourse, you can go status build for even more absurd damage at no cost to damage output. I promise you they’re gonna add a frenzy rapier in the DLC…

staggerring build idea:
right hand : rapier (thrusting sword with highest crit) with glintblade phalanx ash of war in right hand, along with keen affinity
left hand : roger's rapier with cold affinity and meteoric staff with rock swing sorcery
talismans: assasin's crimson dagger, assasin's cerulean dagger, dagger talisman, rotten wing sword insignia
main stats: int (at least 30), dex (same), viguor, endurance. strenght and faith are useless.
use glintblade phalanx and spam rock swing until target is knock down, if it's a boss, switch to roger's rapier and spam power stance (dual holding) attack with both rapiers. If it's an ennemy (or if your low on hp/fp and dont want to use flask) do a front stab (critical hit).
enjoy ;3

There's no weapon class in the game with a bigger difference in their effectiveness between PvE and PvP. In PvP, their startlingly high poise damage and speed, plus counter hits, make them an extremely versatile backup option for offhanding or even mainhanding. In PvE, they lack stance pressure, can't interrupt even some of the weakest attacks, have low damage, and have somewhat limited movesets. I've beat the game all remembrances with at least one weapon of each class as the primary weapon and my thrusting sword run was among the hardest -- perhaps only daggers were worse, but they're also bad in PvP so there's not much to expect there. We're a long way from Estoc builds in DS2.
- Anonymous
How the hell does attacking with this thing 1 handed in the left hand do insane poise damage? It broke through the hyper armor of my collosal great sword
- Anonymous
These things are cracked for just how versatile they are. Want fast status build without the stumpy range of daggers? Want an emergency melee weapon on a caster? A dex weapon that's trivially easy to power-stance? There's more builds that benefit from a thrusting sword than builds that don't.
- Anonymous
The problem with this class was never the speed. It's when it's combined with their their tracking and hitboxes. The hitbox issue was already said by 05 Aug Anon. For tracking, the fact that turning your character mid-thrust can give you a hitbox of a slashing weapon is incredibly dumb. A thrust doesn't work like that IRL. If they were to ever nerf this class (they won't), it should be their tracking, because thrusts inherently cannot threaten a wide area.
- Anonymous
These have the same problems a lot of other weapons have; they are too long. You can roll catch just by spamming r1 with the four longest. I also think they look too big in general.

Just a bit of sword nerd stuff for those that are interested in knowing what inspired From for making these. There seems to be a misunderstanding about rapiers or "Thrusting Swords" as the game calls them. Rapiers are not just for thrusting. Small Swords are the ones without cutting edges. Rapiers, almost all of them have cutting edges. Obviously, they don't cut as much as other blade types because their blades are quite slim, compared to say, a longsword or a basket hilt sword which have broader blade profiles.
Funny enough, the Estoc should NOT have an edge since that was a "battlefield rapier" designed to be griped by the blade and handle to aid in the thrust in the gaps of plate armor, because they often have blocky and extremelly rigid blades incapable of being sharpened. Think of it like, an oversized Rondel Dagger.

Patches come and go, but the thrusting cancer stands still.

Pvp aside, these are excellent backup boss killers. I have never seen anyone use my build but I’d like to share. In co-op I use:
Rapier, physical affinity, chilling mist, black flame blade.
For slow bosses you start with an L2, then immediately black flame blade which gains the fast cast effect because it’s combod with the ash. The cloud will frost the boss and the flame will undo the frost, allowing more buildup. Against some bosses like erdtree avatars or 1st phase Rennala the frost can proc twice in 1 go, leading to tremendous damage.
For only 2.5 weight and 12 dex it’s incredible, you can solo a variety of bosses like radahn, sewer mohg, etc with a setup of 5 red 2 blue (4-3 if you want assurance that you have enough black flame to kill the boss, or for hard-to-hit bosses like Maliketh who will waste part of your cast). I’m usually at 4-2 anyways those last flasks are a PITA.
For 20 dex you can run the antspur. The combo of rot + black flame blade (+ poison throwing daggers + frost) will literally melt bosses. I deleted the fire giant on a lvl 15 build this way. Deletes Morgott, deletes maliketh, and I cannot stress how hard this eviscerates Astel. Useable level 1 with radagons, dex tali (Millicent’s), faith tali, and +2 faith gear. Last slot I’d go turtle tali, since you will dodge and attack a lot.
Rapiers are the BEST class for using black flame blade. Low recovery frames, just focus on dodging + tagging the boss with the flame.
For normal PVE have a bigger weapon at least katana/spear size to stagger knights, omens and such. Thx for reading and happy hunting!

Why are they only have thrust move anyway? Rapiers are about fast, flashy and elegant strikes, not just mindless thrusts. Old animation assets revamped I know, but done lazily.
- Anonymous
There are lots of counters existing for this in PvP and I don't really think they need speed/damage adjustments as many people suppose... but I just don't get the decision behind the gigantic ghost hitbox. The hitbox is a goot 15 times thicker than the weapon itself. The entire concept of a thrusting sword is to be a quick stab weapon for duels. There was literally no reason to make these hitboxes so big that your enemy can rollcatch you with a forward thrust while you're standing on his side. You can get used to it, but like... why is it like that in the first place?
- Anonymous
PvP nerds whining about thrusting weapons like they've not been the meta for centuries.
- Anonymous
Haven't seen anyone else mention this but the one-handed jumping R2 has the exact same speed and recovery time as the jumping R1.
- Anonymous
It really makes no sense that the estoc isnt the longest, its visually longer than the cleanrot and it weighs the most.
- Anonymous
It's so funny to me how meta slaves are almost like anime villains sometimes, they start with something like curved greatsword, get hit once or twice and swap to moonveil / magic spam like they just did a speech about how impressive it was for me to get a single hit in, but they're not at a fraction of their power. These, of course, are their final phase. Dual wielded, blood infused, BHS. Their theme plays and they spam till I'm gone, slow RP walk away...

Most people using quickstep/bloodhound step with these will instantly queue attack after using the skill, making for a very easy parry. I know saying "just parry" isn't a solution to all of lifes problems but hey, its something you can do.
- Anonymous
Wait, why do the impaling thrust have different FP consumption on different weapons? Estoc is 14 whereas Noble's Estoc is 9?
- Anonymous
The estoc should really be the longest in the class, the weapon itself is literally longer than cleanrot and it often does less damage. It having the range advantage would make more sense.

It's a shame this is the only weapon type without a weapon that has a unique skill.

Thrusting swords are very fast weapon. But unlike many weapon rapiers dont have R2-attacks, they are able to stun knights-type enemies. So use a running attack + R2. To damage the balance, use charged R2 and Glinstone Phalanx. Three-four such attacks break knights and trolls. I like Rogier's and Noble's swords.

Best weapon class in the game for PvP. Nothing comes close to its damage-frame data ratio

Heavy beats keen scaling with their respective builds on every single one of these that are infusible when used 2-handed; by a fair amount too. It's kind of silly, really.

These weapons are a shining example of why ER's weapon affinity system is terrible. Thrusting swords, like most dedicated pierce weapons, have fairly low AR to compensate for their ability to exploit counter thrust damage and the spear talisman. Because of this almost reliance on counter damage, which only affects pierce, elemental affinities fare worse than pure physical (lightning damage does not benefit from spear talisman, for example). So you would think these would be related to dexterity builds, but no, strength builds can slap heavy on anything and do comparable (or higher) damage, even while 1H. Strength in ER is the quality build of yesteryear, swapping between countless various weapons, but with better damage. Claymore, spears, thrusting swords, daggers, fists, even heavy nagakiba works.
But these are also a good example of why DS3 poise was a good thing. Someone with enough poise with one or more thrusting swords can take a hit from just about anything straight to the face, not care, and unload two to four counter hit attacks before their attacker can react. No need to whiff punish, just face tank.

Useless now that the poise damage was nerfed. I was fine with them nerfing the heavy thrusting swords but regular thrusting swords was fine idk why they needed to bother them.

in the dlc they need more weapons in certain classes, they have like nothing available

In PvE powerstanced Thrusting Swords absolutely destroy almost everything. The moveset is great and the length can often roll catch NPC invaders as well. I’m not even using the longest ones, just 2 Estocs. I imagine it’s even better with the Cleanrot Knight swords.
