Tibia Mariner is a Field Boss in Elden Ring. These hunched skeleton dress in lace and ride a ghostly boat. It steers its vessel and attacks the player with a large horn and the aid of undead Skeletons. They are optional bosses, as players don't need to defeat them in order to advance in Elden Ring.
Where to find Tibia Mariner in Elden Ring
Tibia Mariner can be found in:
- Summonwater Village [More Info] [Map Link]
- Liurnia of the Lakes [More Info] [Map Link]
- Wyndham Ruins [More Info] [Map Link]
- Mountaintops of the Giants [More Info] [Map Link]
Tibia Mariner Combat information
- Stance: 80
- Parryable: No
- Immune to critical attacks. Breaking its stance will only stun it briefly
Undead type
Negations (or Absorptions)
The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.
Elden Ring Tibia Mariner Boss Guide
Tibia Mariner Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Tibia Mariner:
- Stay on Torrent throughout the battle to more easily follow the Tibia Mariner when it teleports.
- Use a spirit ash that can help you distract the Skeletons, like the Lone Wolf Ashes.
Melee Users
Yee Haw: Stay mounted on Torrent, run in for a few hits, then run away again. The Skeletons are slow enough that you won't need to worry about them, and the Tibia Mariner's attacks are slow enough that you probably won't get hit often.
Slow and Steady: If you're fighting on foot, focus on damaging the Tibia Mariner itself and try to avoid getting hit by the Skeletons. Hit the boss a few times and then dodge out of the way when it starts attacking. Keep repeating this, staying to its side or behind it if you can. The Crashing Wave attack will kill Skeletons as well, which can help control the crowd.
Magic and Ranged Users
Stay on horseback and keep back when attacking. The Tibia Mariner moves slowly and doesn't have any way to punish ranged attacks other than its allies, which move slowly in their own right as well. If they start crowding you, run to the other side of the boss and attack from there.
Tibia Mariner Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Boat Slam | Slowly raises the bow of its boat, then drops it from a medium height. This attack has very good tracking and will hit you if you try to strafe | Run away a few paces—this attack doesn't have a wide radius |
Crashing Wave | Raises its hand above its head with a green glow while the boat rises high into the air on a wave, then crashes down doing a large amount of damage to everything around it | Run away and wait for the attack to finish |
Horn Splash | Dips its horn to one side and then whips it forward, splashing damaging water to its side | Circle to the stern of the boat and keep attacking |
Horn Swing | Swings its horn to one side | Roll towards the stern of the boat |
Vertical Horn | Holds its horn vertically in front of it for a long time, then brings it down in front of it. The hitbox on this attack is surprisingly small | Stay towards the back of the boat and keep attacking |
Teleport | Will teleport to a different location after fading away. Resummons Skeletons at target | They can be hit while they are teleporting |
Summon Allies | Blows its horn flat along the boat, summoning additional Skeletons to attack you | This doesn't do any damage itself, so you can attack freely during it |
Tibia Mariner Lore, Notes & Other Trivia
- They always drop Deathroot, which signifies their control over Those Who Live in Death.

Elden Ring Tibia Mariner Boss (Mountaintops of the Giants)
- This enemy does not have a boss bar, but it will not respawn when killed
- Closest Site of Grace: Snow Valley Ruins Overlook
- Multiplayer is allowed for this boss
- You can summon Spirit Ashes for this boss
Tibia Mariner Location
The Tibia Mariner can be found in a small nook on the cliff to the northwest of the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook Site of Grace, overlooking Castle Sol. [Map Link]
Tibia Mariner Combat information
- Health: 9,290 HP
- Defense: 115
- Although this Tibia Mariner is found near several Giant Skeletons (Spirit) like those summoned by the one in Altus Plateau, they're more autonomous and stationary. They'll attack without being invoked by the Mariner, but they'll also stay in one place rather than following you. They usually can't reach the nook in which you find the Mariner, so you can fight it without worrying about them.
- Once this Tibia Mariner is defeated, the nearby Giant Skeletons (Spirit) will continue to respawn after the area has been reset after a Site of Grace rest or a death. This is because they actually aren't summoned by the Tibia Mariner.

is this guy influenced by the Rime of the Ancient Mariner? "Those that Live in Death" sounds pretty similar to "Life-in-Death", and, like the poem, it can summon/resurrect the dead to help it out

How is it that the enemy riding in a boat is strongest vs lightning of all elements?

I hope we get to see one exit the boat in the DLC and have it absolutely eviscerate us.

Why is he called a Tibia mariner? The tibia is sort of an arbitrary bone to choose for the namesake of a sailor skeleton boss. Could it be a reference to having skeletal sea legs, or just because it rolls off to tongue better than “femoral condile mariner”?

Gives Soldier of Godrick competition for the title of hardest ER boss.

FYI: Tibia Mariner's (at least the one at Liurnia by study hall) are not Undead. They do not take extra damage from "Holy" items like Pots and Litany of proper death.

if you struggle with this you need to rethink what game your playing.

The mariner in the mountaintops is an absolute troll. 6 giant skeletons with miniboss HP pools, 4 that can't be target-locked, and they drop zero runes when killed. Alternatively, look for the little skeleton boat man tucked away in a corner, and kill him in 5 hits, all while the giant skeletons can't bother you.
Game design.

Mod idea: Replace the spooky, ominous OST for the mariners with The Lonley Island's "I'm on a Boat" to much better suit the actual intimidation level of this boss.

it says you can summon D in summonwater village but I do not see his summon sign nor does he appear to help in battle. Is that a typo?

Tibia Mariner doesn’t spawn for me in East Liurnia, which sucks cause I’m thinking of incorporating Bestial Incantations into my build and need his Deathroot. Is there any trick to it or am I screwed?
- Anonymous
I hope we can get their horn as a weapon someday, with Int/Faith scaling to match death sorceries.

Can't get the mariner in the mountains (or the giant skeletons) to spawn anymore in my game. I know I didn't kill the mariner. Did the newest patch change something here?
- Anonymous
Why does the skeleton in the snowy area keeps respawning even after defeating the Mariner?
- Anonymous
These enemies, for whatever reason, don't count as undead. They don't take bonus damage from holy water pots or spells like Litany of Proper Death. Really weird. Still weak to holy and strike, though, so bonk the bastards away.
- Anonymous
Theirs a typo I don’t think the giant skeleton shoots a bean
- Anonymous
Not that you'd ever need to, but they can be easily cheesed by simply placing Latenna somewhere high up, firing a single projectile, then just letting her take them out while you eat a sandwich

Love this boss so much, he's a skeleton in a boat and he's trying his best
- Anonymous
Could this enemy be related to Helphen's Steeple lorewise? Outside of dropping it, I mean. The item description talks of a lamplight similar to grace in appearance. There's a lamp hanging above the Mariner's chair which gives off a purple glow, but instead of fire, the light seems to emanate from a long and slender object inside, looking very much like a site of grace (to my eyes at least).

Id like to take a ride with him. He paddles me into the shining moonlight and we talk about god while im blowing his horn.

This has to be a strong contender for the dumbest and most pointless boss in the game, maybe any game. At wyndham ruins it disappeared and I was riding round in circles getting nowhere but I thought if I went higher it should be easier to see the glow that gives it away but it was right there in front of me, in the middle of a field with some sheep and not even the kind of sheep that live in death.
The one at mountaintop of the giants is an even bigger idiot. It was down on a ledge between the large area with all the gravestones and castle sol, it wasn't anywhere near water and it didn't move from that spot, at all. I was throwing volcano pots down on it and the dumb f**ker was just sitting in the middle of their AoE taking massive DoT until it died.
- Anonymous
So anyone have a name of the giant skeleton with laser eye and arm sweep?
- Anonymous
I spent 10 minutes trying to kill the giant skeleton in Altus Plateau, didn't even realise it was a summon and the boat guy spawned on the very far left, out of sight. Then he teleported on top of a hill
- Anonymous
Something weird with last one of Tibia Mariners (Concecrated snowfield). I kill him, but one giant skeleton still keeps spawning right at the turn to the bridge - rest now gone. Anyone know if there is hidden summoner snail there or something like it?
- Anonymous
I didn’t see D in a single spot to help for the fight with the first battle.
I was looking everywhere for his sign but nothing, I spoke to him and went to the fight and he didn’t come. Look all around didn’t see a single summon sign. Anyone know where it was supposed to be

by far the funniest boss in the game, the mountaintops fight is pretty much him struggling to maneuver the boat through the snow in a small circle (inevitably shipwrecking on some small rocks) while you spam throwables into his boat from the safety of the cliffs above. Oh and there's 2 snails chilling with him for some reason.

if only we can get this man summon. that giant skeleton that fires laser from their eyes, and can smack you like a mice
- Anonymous
Either the page is wrong and despite being undead they are not weak to holy or the one near Castle Sol is not weak to holy. I can throw a holy pot at the death bird nearby and do over 2k dmg without hitting face but at this thing I do around 300 dmg.
- Anonymous
Where in the world is this thing hiding in Mountaintops of the Giant's? It's not with the 2 snails overlooking Castle Sol. Meanwhile it's huge summon skeleton buddy is always there.
For the Tibia Mariner in Mountain of the Giants, there's a small ledge you can stand on and safely shoot arrows/particles down at it.
- Anonymous
Love these guys. They're just out there chilling on their boat, having a great old time. I wish I had a boat. Where's the whistle to summmon a big ol' boat? I'd ride it everywhere, even if it was 10 times slower than torrent. Just give me a boat. let me be at peace. Let me be at one with the boat.

If these things were challenging they'd be one of my favourite bosses in the game. Just need more health, more speed and an expanded moveset.

Takes 7 shots from the Regal Omen Bairn, from the very very top. Don't need to drop down at all, just lock on. Follow the right edge of cliff, until you see him, then stop and cheese him.

The one at Mountaintops can be cheesed by ranged users (not that there is much point in this, but aaaaanyway). All you need to do is to go from Snow Valley Ruins Overlook grace toward his position, remaining on main ledge (the one with graveyard). When you will get close to him (you will get promt from Bestial Eye), just stick to the right edge of cliff, and from there you will see him from above, and there will be ledge in mid-way on the left to let you safely jump down. All you need to do now is to remain at the top and spam him with bow, crossbow, ballista or spells with enough range, like Rock Sling. He won't aggro nor start summoning, will remain down there and swim in circles, confused, untill you finnish him.

The Tibia Mariner in Mountaintop of the Giants was bugged for me. Tried killing the giant kamehameha skeleton by the bridge before stargazer ruins, tried reloading the area, tried killing every enemy in that entire stretch of cliff south/southwest of Castle Sol. Never spawned in that north facing cliff spot by the castle nor did it spawn more giant skeletons after I kill the one by the bridge.

The mariner in Altus will summon an enormous skeleton to fight you. It can be killed despite it's health bar not always being visible for some reason. If you stay close it and hit it right in the head then it will have a hard time hitting you with it's swipe attacks. Luckily I had the brick hammer and the orders blade enchantment ready to go so I demolished that giant skeleton fairly easily.
