Torrent the Spirit Steed is a mount in Elden Ring. He will be your constant companion, used for travel, exploration, and combat.
Torrent cannot be ridden within dungeons, nor can he be called upon during PvP or Co-op.
Unlock Torrent in Elden Ring
To unlock Torrent in Elden Ring, speak to Melina at the Gatefront Ruins Site of Grace. Agree to have her act as your maiden, and she will give you the Spectral Steed Whistle which you can use to summon Torrent. Put the whistle in your quick items or your pouch for easy access, since you'll be using it frequently!

Maneuvering on Torrent
Torrent can run faster and jump further than you can on foot, and learning to ride him effectively will make your time in the Lands Between much easier.

Torrent's normal walking speed is about as fast as your running speed on foot, and repeatedly dashing will double your speed again. Although Torrent's dash doesn't provide any invulnerability frames, it's fast enough to outpace almost any enemy, especially if they're winding up an attack.
Torrent's jumps go further than yours, but his most potent power is the ability to double-jump. This allows you to reach areas that would otherwise be totally inaccessible and even jump over some attacks. You can also change direction as you double-jump, which makes it the quickest way to turn Torrent around while running as well.
Mounted Attacks
Attacks on horseback differ from those on foot. You can only hold one weapon at once, although you can switch between your right- and left-hand weapon. You can't two-hand a weapon either, so avoid using weapons whose Strength requirements you can only meet while two-handing.

Each attack has a left- and right-side counterpart, which determines which side of Torrent you swing your weapon on. The light attacks are simple swings of your weapon, while the drag attacks can be held to drag your weapon along the ground, releasing it with a powerful swing. Although the timing is tricky, this is an excellent way to approach an enemy. Larger weapons' drag attacks can even launch foes into the air!
If you're wielding a Sacred Seal or a Glintstone Staff, you'll cast a spell instead of doing your right light attack. If you're wielding a Light Bow, Bow, or Crossbow, you'll use the normal control scheme for that weapon instead, with the exception that you still can't use its Skill. Shields, Greatbows, and Ballistas are ineffective on horseback, and act as melee weapons instead.
How do you make a Horse Elden Ring Faster?
There currently is no stead way to increase the speed of Torrent or other mounts and horses. In Elden Ring players can only sprint on foot. The only other option while mounted is to dash. Although there are some speed running players that claim that mashing your run button while mounted will actually result in a faster run. This will still burn through your stamina quickly if you are engaged in combat.
Mounted Combat
You can do battle while riding Torrent, and in many cases this may be easier than fighting on foot. Torrent's speed makes it easy to outmaneuver most foes or quickly back off to safely heal or attack at range. He also has a hefty health bar of his own, and incoming attacks that are lower to the ground may hit him and leave you unscathed.
There are some situations in which mounted combat isn't the best option, though. In enclosed spaces, Torrent's speed can be more of a hindrance than a benefit, especially given how long it takes him to turn around. Torrent also has a Stance bar of his own that repeated attacks can quickly fill, causing you to fall off. If this happens, it'll take a long time for you to get back on your feet, and you'll be vulnerable to attacks until then. Enemies wielding Torchpoles are particularly problematic on horseback, since each attack connects multiple times from a relatively long distance.
If Torrent takes damage (or if you just want to give your good boy a treat), he can be healed with Rowa Raisins, Sweet Raisins, Frozen Raisins, and the Flask of Crimson Tears. If Torrent dies, you will fall off and be stunned for multiple seconds. You can still summon Torrent even after he dies, but doing so costs a charge from the Flask of Crimson Tears and requires navigating a confirmation dialog. (If Torrent was merely stance-broken, he can be resummoned at no cost.)
Mounted Tactics
- Against larger enemies with slower attacks: Ride in, get in a few hits, and dash back out before you take damage. Because mounted attacks have a short delay, it's a good idea to start attacking as you approach the enemy. After the attack lands, continue past the enemy, using a dash or two if necessary to avoid an attack. Once you're clear, turn around, wait for your stamina to recover, and repeat. Getting distance is essential, since you can neither dodge nor guard on horseback.
- Against hordes of weaker enemies: Stay outside the group and use your Drag Attack to hit multiple enemies at a time. If you get caught in the middle, you'll quickly be knocked off.
- Against ranged enemies: Lock on and spiral in towards them so you can get closer while dodging their projectiles.
- Against enemies with faster attacks: Get in close as safely as you can and hit them repeatedly to keep them staggered. If you can't kill them with a single stamina bar, make sure to save some to ride away to safety.
Spiritspring Jumping
During your journeys through the Lands Between you'll come across large, twister-like columns that are constantly spinning in place. These are Spiritsprings. You can jump into a Spiritspring while on horseback to ride its current high into the air and land safely nearby. Even if you jump down from a great height, landing near a Spiritspring will ensure you take no fall damage. They're often found near high cliffs and make it easy to pass between areas that differ greatly in altitude.
Spirit Steed Notes & Tips
- When using a crossbow while galloping on horseback, the player can fire their crossbow while in mid-air without unloading the crossbow as firing it normally would, allowing the player to fire their crossbow a second time immediately upon landing, without needing to reload (the Pulley Crossbow is excluded). This behavior is similar to the rapid follow-up shot the a player can achieve with a shortbow after jumping and firing it, albeit with stricter requirements.

I think we should be able to feed torrent food and armor that you can buy or craft and we should be able to give him skills like spike boots so he can claim walls so on and so on and we should be able to change his colour and saddle.thank you for considering my ideas.

You can still use a Strength Weapon if you ony can use it while Two Handing, as long as you Two Hand it BEFORE you mount up and NOT changeing your weapon as long as you ride.

If you two hand a weapon BEFORE you mount on torrent, the strenght requirements are still solved, BUT if u CHANGE your weapon while mounting than there is no way to two hand again until u sit up and mount up again.

This guy is literally nothing but a burden in combat. He dies in two hits, you have no dodges for marginally higher movement speed and when he dies, you have to sacrifice a health flask, if you survive your character acting like a meteor just hit them as they spend six weeks getting back up, which is more time than if they were hit with an actual meteor and you can even be executed during this. He has zero uses beyond convenient travel.

Testing with fall damage indicates Torrent has just over 1900 HP. No idea what his defense stats are though, or how I'd test them.
I'd really love to know Torrent's stats, and how he scales with you. Got to wondering when I saw a bunch of rowa raisins in my inventory realizing I've never once used them in this game. Torrent is tanky enough that if he gets downed it's super rare. This playthrough I think it's happened like twice.

You can buff Torrent with Blessing's Boon.
Don't know if other buffs like Golden Vow work on him. Also don't know what happens to the buff if you dismount him and remount him while the buff is applied. Haven't tested yet.
And like. I don't think it's a game-changer because of how limited mounted combat is.

Also Imagine if you could summon Torrent for the Elden Beast fight. Its seems so perfect: The huge Arena, the Boss always pissing off, Elden Stars.
This would also end the game on a high note. Torrent doesnt really get summoned after the Firegiant. ER pretty much plays like a Souls Game the last few hours. (which is totally fine dont get me wrong)
FROM could even make it bittersweet by making Melina say a line to encourage Torrent to ride with you one last time. Just let Elden Beast automatically cast Elden Stars at 75% Health or something.

Just so you know you can 2-hand on Torrent, you just have to do it before getting on him. It *looks* like one hand, but menu numbers and the little red X confirm that it is two-handed.

Torrent should have upgrades for his 0 poise and 0 defence.
Also dexterity does not increase your poise on him, so that should be fixed.

I haven't seen anybody talk about it, and it's not listed here, but thrusting swords and heavy thrusting swords are the only weapons to have unique follow ups for the heavy attacks while on horseback!

It seems torrent doesn't heal when resting at sites of grace, but it's inmune to status effects, inmune to damage between appearing and disappearing, etc. I believe it has something to do with that spirit cult in siofra, the mausoleum compound, the consecrated snowfield's frozen trees, etc... i think those trees are an offspring of the crucible, different from the erdtree. It's worshippers are more leaned towards magic in a spiritual way, from wich torrent draws for it's summoning, double jumps and jumpsprings. I believe this is why torrent has horns, as they show a connection to the crucible.

FYI you can to hand while on torrent you just have to do it before you get on him. The developers were having difficulty and bringing animations to all two handed weapons so I heard they just scrapped it and Valhalla likely held in rain was going through something similar and instead of scrapping it they just sacrificed a little visual quality with keeping the numbers minus the animations. I'm not sure if you can switch between weapons while you have one of them two-handed I'm not sure if it converts it back to one handed as you cycle through but know that if you have low level character that you're not putting in strength points and you need that two-handed buff you can use it on horseback

Y'know, I do wonder why Torrent has horns. Because he is just a horse; in-game he's just referred to as a horse, even in dialogue, and he looks and moves exactly like a horse... but also he has horns. And no other horses in the game have horns afaik, so it's not like horns are a normal horse feature in this universe that don't bear mentioning. The devs could definitely have handwaved this--oh, he has horns because he's not technically a horse, he's a "spirit steed", something like that, but no. Torrent is just a horse. Who has horns. Why's he got horns? Eh.

It would be cool to give torrent some customization in this up coming dlc. Different saddles, Different hair colors, a button designated for you to say “you’re alright girl” in Arthur Morgan’s Voice, horse armor but it’s just armor you wear to look like torrent, some saddle bags. I dunno just thinkin.

He doesnt care if you take the frenzied flame, if you (accidentally of course) jump off cliffs with him or test fall damage. He just wants to be your friend

Torrent seems to be connected to the Ancestor Spirits. They're both called "spirits", and they both have that cyan colour (as seen when you summon Torrent).

It's amazing how many people hate Torrent. He's game breaking good if you have any skill at riding him, being slightly faster than the boss for a change puts the bosses at an awful disvantage, as the big thing making the fights difficult in souls games is that the enemy always controlled ranging.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the dlc added horse armour that increase your horses defense or like a special type of seed you can feed to him to increase his hp. Or even like add a headbutt move when both your hands are not equipped with weapons, I think that’s be a cool feature.

I hate that dismount and crouch are the same. SO many times, when there's a fight, i grip the controller tighter and then dismount and get killed. Isn't really anywhere else I can switch it without ruining what I swapped with, the only option is to disable it.

Does anyone know for sure if your equip load has an effect on torrent? I'm pretty sure it does but I have no idea how to test that. I noticed very early that if I had fat rolls Torrent wasn't jumping as high and a bit more sluggish generally but earlier on I had the light equip load and it did seem faster than usual, especially the speed boost.

The most useless animal companion of any game I've played. Why he doesn't level with you is baffling. Anything one shots him and the long animation to get back up is just the icing on the cake. Guaranteed death.

They really shouldn't have made the sprint cost stamina, its not like rolling, which is actually useful in combat, and it's only marginally faster the walking speed, and to top it off, it's the ****ing horse running, not me, so why the **** does it drain my entire stamina pool to make my horse run from 1 spot I was fighting a dragon to the spot it flies to in a single attack animation? That's ****ing stupid, horse sucks in general, why keep giving us thousands of reasons to hate it even more?

Small edit here with regards to two handing requirements: while you cannot two hand a weapon whilst on torrent, you CAN two hand the weapon prior to mounting torrent and keep the two handed bonus.

anyway, i think its double jump purpose only to jump, well, higher and farther. but apparently it can't mitigate fall damage. i tried jumping from a high hill (that the drop would kill me), then do a second jump just about 2 meters above the ground, i was dead. does this happen to anyone?

Something that I was a bit disappointed about was the fact that Torrent was the only mount. Imagine having like a lizard mount, an ostrich-like mount, maybe even a spider mount.
Each could have their own attributes. The lizard regens on its own during combat, the ostrich can perform a triple jump, the spider has better maneuverability, while Torrent remains faster and well rounded.
It would have also been nice to accessorize Torrent.

Some weapons are better suited to mounted combat than others. Straight Swords and other swiping motion weapons have a nice R1 because they cover a 180° fan around your sides will have an easy time hitting multiple opponents. Most piercing weapons do a poke that has just an objectively terrible small hitbox that will only hit something standing basically right next to Torrent’s 1/11 o’clock. Ironic given that spears were used in actual horse combat. Some weapons like Twinblades and Flails have a nice multi-hitting R2 that is great for groups and can knock them into a riposte on the finally swing and are good for stat proccs. Greatswords aren’t bad but colossal weapons tend to be too slow to be worthwhile since they have a long recovery and narrow hitbox. Halberds have a decent sweep which is shared with Great Spears, making them the only poking weapon with a mounted sweep. Carian Greatsword is a great pick for sorcerers since it covers almost 360° and can be repeated rather fast. It goes without saying but weapons with a really short range aren’t worth using either.

My only problem is that the double jump does not reset your fall distance. This goes for all the games that do this: you literally go UP, your downwards momentum is cancelled. All I mean is, I wanna escape fall damage with a well timed jump.

Fairly confident his sprint speed is less than 2% faster than his walk speed. Literally just increases the fov to look like your going faster lol.

I think we don't appreciate enough how comfortable mounting Torrent is. Mounting always kind of sucked in other games because they try to be too realistic and make horses get stuck on everything. Hopefully this sets a new standard for the industry.
It would be cool if you can give torrent amour so he has some defense and give him some drip
