Visage Shield is a Greatshield in Elden Ring. The Visage Shield is a Shield that scales primarily with Strength. Greatshields weigh a decent amount and provide the best protection in the game. Greatshields provide a greater value of blocking and protecting one's self from enemy and boss attacks, but greatly increases the weight and reduces the player's mobility. This type of shield works best at reducing damage or guarding instead of parrying.

Tricksome bronze shield depicting the face of a Fire Giant.
Several tongues leap from its open mouth.

The dreadful visage and burning flames are designed to remind one of the horror of facing a Fire Giant. In other words, this shield has an instructional function.

    • There is a neat thing I found out when doing a Shields only run.
This applies even if you equip 2 shields and this means there are some Skills that can be buffed with the Jellyfish shield!

You can R-Hand the Jellyfish Shield and L-Hand a Shield with an offensive Skill (ex. One-eyed shield, Visage Shield or Shield Crash) and you can buff yourself by two-handing the Jellyfish Shield, use Contagious Fury then one-hand the shield and now if you try to use the weapon skill you'll use the skill of the shield in the L-hand while keeping the buff from the Jellyfish Shield.

I tested this with the Visage Shield and by stacking it with Commander's Standard, Flame grant me strength, Flame-shrouded tear, Fire scorpion charm (and you can add Shard of Alexander but I still have to get it in my run) you can melt down some bosses.

i'd kill for this things l2 to be a fire monk/giant spell that gets buffed by the giant seal and acts like the one the actual fire giant uses

This shield is absolutely insane! Use some shield grease and strafe left while using the AOW for a literal flame tank build! I'm doing a cracked out pyromancer run with this son of a gun and honestly have little to no need for any of the giant flame spells (yet, I haven't gotten to the mountaintop yet). This thing is just such a blast to use though I love it lol

          • Anonymous

You can cancel the recovery of the ash of this by crouching making it pretty good since the crouch attack has a surprising amount of range and few expect it right out of the ash.

            • Anonymous

I think the windup animation should be shorter. Right now, it takes so long that enemies can get away or break your guard before the fire start to come out. I know it shouldn't be as good as incantations like Crucible Breath or Dragonfire as this is pure STR weapon, but it shouldn't be too situational good like this.

              • Anonymous

saved my shield only run I'll prolly switch to one eyed post leyndell but this carries hard during boss fights

                • Anonymous

At 80 STR (including two handing it at 54 STR) it only does 3 less AR than Fingerprint Stone Shield. The ash does less overall damage, but it's easier to hit on less mobile bosses and in PVP, and you hold your gaurd throughout. Genuinely a good contender for best shield for pure damage.

There's some hidden stability debuff when the skill was active. Even fully upgraded with the Greatshield Talisman, most unupgraded weapons will break the guard when using the skill in a single hit. Even rolling into it with the Briar Set breaks the guard in only a few rolls through the fire.

There's a bug with this shield that I encountered while co-oping Godfrey. The other summon used this shield and one of the bubble blowing weapons. He used the Tongues of Fire skill but for some reason instead of fire it blew tons of bubbles and Godfrey got absolutely melted. I'll try to recreate it when I can be bothered to farm a bubble-making weapon and will try to recreate this.

You an tell if people using this have their camera set to look down by default because they lose about 75% of their range until they notice and adjust.

Both this and the One Eyed Shield are my favorite weapons in the game, hands down. Catching people off guard with Quirky defense builds that allow you to pump strength and say no to bleed meta is a beautiful thing. My only complaint is that there is not more of these trick weapons out there to feed my Berserk/Bloodborne hunger.

Give me a Shield that fires cannon balls for physical damage and I will use it.

                          • Anonymous

Tip for using the weapon art, don't try to trade with it because your guard boost tanks while using it on top of the high stamina consumption.

This should probably say "in the Eastern part of the ruins" and not "East of the ruins". The map is on point though.

Beat pumpkin heads by buffing with golden vow, bloodflame blade, flame grant me strength, and jellyfish shield. Attacking the one sitting down first also seemed to help

Using the shield skill in your left hand after you've buffed your right weapon with either bloodflame or blackflame, will proc its effects. In fact, it does it for all fire skills/spells/incantations. Not sure if bug or not, but sure as heck makes a lot more builds fun.

as far as I know this is the highest damage shield in the game and has the second highest guard boost. I definitely think the intended way to use this is two handed and to block and counter with it using it's above average damage. Definitely a different way to play I found pretty fun but you definitely feel the downsides against certain enemies cause after all you're still hitting them with a shield so your range is horrible and your attacks are slow. If you want some tips abuse the running attack, it has active block frames and it comes out fast so you can hit targets faster while keeping your block up. Jumping attacks also come out fast but you can't block as much. Otherwise just use the guard counter whenever possible. The fire also does way more damage then you think it does and can actually melt most bosses and enemies, the only downside is it's a little slow to get going and you take chip damage while using it.

This shield's Guard Boost is the highest I've found so far at 81... Am I the only one abusing this paired with Rapiers?

                                      • Anonymous

Interesting how the face is straight-up that of a Flame Chariot. So those things are meant to resemble the fire giants as well? Were they also used for training?

                                        • Anonymous

This shield is disturbingly good when used as a weapon. With enough strength, you can reliably do 500-600 damage per shunt, and it's weapon art, while slow, does incredible damage to distracted foes. For pvp, this thing is a monster, and has caught almost everyone off I've smacked with it off guard with it's punishing counters, for pve, it's much less impressive, fantastic for taking on big bosses like the Avatars (which the flamethrower melts in actual seconds btw) or even the Tree Sentinels, but suffers against normal enemies with long combos.

Is there any way for me to remove the Tongues of Fire effect and solely use the shield for defence? I hate having to remove shield every time I want to use Bloodhounds Finesse on my Bloodhounds Fang :(

                                            • Anonymous

For those struggling with the encounter to get this shield as a melee build, you can very easily beat this fight by riding your horse and circling around them with melee swings.

                                              • Anonymous

The weapon art follows the older rules of turtle shield poking, where you take chip damage to your health and have a reduced stability while using it. Very frustrating and disappointing, since it's a pretty cool effect. 2h'ing a right hand shield with Barricade shield will apply the guard boost to the Visage Shield block when you dual wield (and have it on your left hand), but the bonus DOES NOT apply to the weapon art. Unsure if shield grease or the greatshield talisman buff this, but you are still taking health damage on block when you shouldn't. Only useful on a few annoying, fast enemy types with weak shield damage on block. The damage DOES scale with the weapon level and the fire damage ring, possibly Flame, Grant Me Strength as well.

                                                • Anonymous

I just actually took the time to check this thing out and it seems kinda busted, at +4 and 45 strength it has over 400 damage with scaling, i havent tested how or if the weapon art damage scales from leveling and strength scaling, but considering it seems to work on most other aggressive weapon arts i assume this one will as well

                                                  • Anonymous

Honestly, I found this thing pretty disappointing. It's great when you can actually use it, but you can get the same effect faster without spending FP by just swinging any weapon with a wide arc. It's cool, but the range is short, and even though the flamethrower animation consists of holding the shield out in front of you, it doesn't double as guarding, which is both silly and renders the skill niche use with little to no practical application.

                                                    • Anonymous

Find this shield with 36 strength, equipped it with two hands. Beat Bosses, npc’s, and invaders alike with my forehead. Get 44 strength… equipped with two hands…

                                                      • Anonymous

tip for anyone using the weapon art, you have a massive debuff to your boost while using it. Been using it with Scholar's shield, can go from draining almost no stamina on hit to guard broken in one hit from almost full stamina. Not a problem against enemies with low poise and no hyper armor though as the flames will pretty much stunlock them, the flames are also good and breaking enemies' stances.

Was googling on how to kill those double Mad Pumpkin Heads and no luck - only single boss fights can be found ATM.
Was able to kill them with poison cloud incantation at lvl 33 - 12 faith for basic charm and poison cloud spell and everything else in HP/FP and 16 str for brass shield to block some attacks. Keep them in a cloud until poison kicks in and then sprint around until they get 728 damage. Repeat.

The only applicable ash of war for a shield is No Skill, and I’m currently looking at my menu and it can’t be applied, the shield doesn’t appear in the list of armaments when applying them at a grace.
