Vyke's War Spear is a Great Spear in Elden Ring. The Vyke's War Spear scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity, and Faith and it is a good weapon for those users with high Dexterity builds, though players should use it wisely, as it inflicts madness on both their enemies and themselves.

War spear singed and blistered by fingers, used by Vyke, Knight of the Roundtable Hold.

Like Vyke himself, it has been tormented by the yellow flame of frenzy from within.

Everyone crying for this specific weapon to be nerfed is ignoring the bigger picture, it's not the weapon that's broken, it's the entire way status buildup works in PvP, bleed and rot are just as broken and it doesn't matter how much robustness, immunity or focus you stack, all status buildups need a 50% reduction against players to have some form of balance

      • Anonymous

You know i love this weapon as mutch as the next guy.

But seriously people make us "creative players" look bad becease most people just spam the weapon art with this weapon just to kill people. Which is sutch a garbage way to "battle" people.

I mean weapon art spammers shouldn't even be allowed to play pvp imo, becease these type of people ruin the pvp.

How many times haven't we seen rivers of blood weapon art spammers, this weapon art spammers, moonveil weapon art spammers. And so one and one.

Seriously though these people in pvp are ruining these weapons becease they are the reason these weapons are so hated, and need to be nerfed for. and they make people like me who atleast play creative with the weapon and it's move set in pvp, look just as bad as the spammers them selfs, or the people that just dual wield weapons like this spear. ( I mean dual wielding this weapon god it's so badly ridiculous in how easy it is to proc kill people with the status effect, as do many other weapons)

I think this meta ruined the pvp as a whole. Becease "fun and fair fights" simpley don't exist in the pvp meta. It's just chease people with op weapon art spam, gank squad stunlock or ambush people, or the people who just waste your time becease the litraly wait to one shot counter attack you by some bs.

And becease this is the meta in this game it's not worth playing pvp anymore. weapons like these are probably getting nerfed becease of what the meta people use these weapons for. (Spamming weapon arts, or dual wielding for the easy status effect proc kill) which is a shame to be honest becease they might make these nerfed weapon no longer useable after the nerf.

How do you dodge the ash of war? Every time I roll behind the player using it, the explosion still hits me and I get staggered.

          • Anonymous

Do y'all just want all straight swords that deal the same damage? Stop calling everything OP. If everything is OP then nothing is OP.

            • Anonymous

Thing hits like a truck. Screw madness, just the raw damage output makes this thing scary. Obviously, if you actually manage to inflict your opponent with madness in PvP, that's GG. Really a fantastic all around weapon that I can't recommend enough.

              • Anonymous

Vyke users need to level up int in real life. Dude was coinvading with me and using it, did nothing but spam the weapon art directly on top of me. He killed me with a madness proc, and then proceeded to get pulverized by the host and phantoms.

                • Anonymous

The only problem with this weapon is that madness can proc through phantom hits, other than that it's ok by elden ring standards

                    >casual invasion with honest zwei poke
                    >host pulls out one of these
                    >bet
                    >hardswap to two of them. Instant madness because the host has built up so much of it on himself from spamming the ash of war.
                    >Jump L2, win.

The only way to beat vykes is to vyke harder, gamers.

This needs to be renamed ugh cause that's what every player says when they've seen this for the 20th time for the day.

It's a warm day in Liurnia of the lakes. You decide to go for some invasions. You get a successful invade attempt seconds after using your finger, and you load into the hosts world. You ignore the name because you don't care, you're busy applying sepukku to your dual wield cross naginatas. You see the host in the distance, and you begin your bleed spam that shreds other players. After viciously mashing L2, your smirk fades as you realize this host used a shield. "This is bull****!" you say as your plan is foiled. The host then pokes you with Vyke's spear during your second combo of blood spam, getting off a good 3 thrusts before you roll away with a fraction of your health left. Pixels away from a madness proc, you break out your secret move; you begin to roll rapidly in a panic to escape, running far away from the host as you realize your bleed build has lost the grace of gold, and your "skills" in PvP are not simply tarnished, but are nothing more than unshakable rust. The host hits you with a sprinting R2, catching you in your panic roll. As you die, the host uses Howl of Shabriri over your fading body. Enraged by such unfairness, you open your bookmark to Vyke's War Spear on fextralife, turn on caps lock, and begin pounding away on your mechanical keyboard in the comments section. You write a paragraph about how this spear is broken and trash, putting every ounce of your rage into this box. You slam the enter key and take a deep breath, you have done your holy duty to tell others on the internet that a virtual spear is broken and overpowered. You stroke your neck beard confidently, and shout up from the basement to your mother that you're hungry after your vigilante work, and require pizza rolls and more mountain dew. The title of Elden Lord does not grant enough gratitude to these heros. Please, my fellow elden ring players, if you see a comment bashing this weapon, be sure to reply to that post and thank that war-scarred veteran for their service. The invasion may be over, but the frenzy-flame butthurt will never fade...

I originally intended for my build to cosplay the most powerful entity in From history, Rick, Soldier of God. It was a quality build, but then I wanted to have Dragonbolt Blessing to scare people who were using smaller weapons, and to make guard counters easier. Then I thought, "If I'm two handing a quality weapon, shouldn't my dex be 1.5× my str stat, since str gets the same increase when two handing a weapon?" So I started leveling dex more than str. Then I remembered this weapon and, as it turned out, not only were my stats perfectly suited for it, it was also really really fun for PvP. So, I converted. No regerts

Got this and used it to invade players in limgrave fighting the tree guardian most fun I've ever had open with a rot breath to freak them out and introduce them to what these games are about

I made a build around this weapon for my frenzied play through. I don't PVP but I do a lot coop with other players. This weapon gives me and my groups a chance against the unlimited amount of people invading just to spam one shot kills with their broken meta builds/weapons. If you invade my game and you get lit up by this thing don't come here crying about it. You asked for it. If you truly care about the sport of the fight and fairness you wont be using any of these broken meta builds/weapons in the first place. And you will join a community focused around duels and PVP. If you are looking to gank and get ganked. Which 90% of "pvpers" are. The great yellow death will see you through to the other side.

Thank God we don't have to worry about seeing just Rob builds, it's so much better now that we got variety with people using this.

antspur takes the cake for most toxic weapon at low level, but for high level this is the king of toxicity

                                  • This weapon is op.
Great Lance stagger potential, can't roll madness (animation or build up) its got more range then 60% of the avaliable weapons and has a very strong and spamable weapon art. Even at the required stats to use the weapon it's unfair at pvp. For pve it isn't all all that great but will get the job done. I wouldn't recommend this weapon if you actually want to learn anything in pvp

                                    • Anonymous

Yep, great idea FromSoft to make status effect that builds up on missed hits and causes huge stun and damage so you cant even defend yourself. And lets put it on ash of war that covers half of the map and can be mindlessly spamed for hours. The choice of pathetic players.

I want to be able to use Roundtable Knight Vykes unburnt warspear, and see his armor without the taint of the Three fingers… *sigh* i doubt this will happen though

Typical Vyke War Spear (or any thrusting weapon) mindset:
                                          - Wait for attack
                                          - Running R1
                                          - Wait for attack
                                          - Running R1

Missed the good old days when poise actually did something I could just smesh ppl with my trusty great club

This thing is cancer in pvp. Fingerprint shield and this are meta AF. Or two of these and the WA.
The worst part is how madness procs. Even if they miss it procs, when it lands it procs, madness tolerance is really small even with the talisman to help. I know it’s a cool weapon and all, but good lord is this straight cancer in pvp right now.

                                            • Anonymous

                                              <---------- full of madness
actually though this spear is incredibly fun to use in pve and invasions, the aow deals a ton of damage in a huge area and crazy madness build up to force space in pvp, and destroys regular mobs without needing to even think about what youre doing (also does it have iframes? i seem to be able to dodge a ton of stuff while jumping up, im not sure though since its kind of inconsistent). funny phantom hits still allow you to build madness in pvp even if you get dodged, and the actual madness proc stunning for like 3 seconds lets you get a free heavy that knocks your opponent on the floor. great spear moveset is great, the rolling and crouch slash is super hard to perfectly dodge as to not get phantom hit and madness build up, so if you think that someone is close to madness then you can use that, high poise damage since its a great spear and the running heavy are both great, you can stunlock most pve enemies with running heavy and reliably interrupt most enemies with regular attacks, maybe a jumping heavy if theyre particularly bulky.

                                              10/10 weapon, my personal favourite.

Madness is a dumb mechanic, but only one weapon in the entire game (weapon ok, not shields or seals) can deal madness buildup is also dumb

Not RoB OP but definitely up there in terms of being 'meta'. doesnt take a lot of skill to use like other thrusting weapons but still fun

                                                    • i recently started a madness build for the frenzied flame ending and i love it much more than my previous bleed build, i just wish that madness was able to affect things other than npc invaders and other players.
especially with inescapable frenzy since you cant grab anything that isnt a human thats around your size so that rules out literally every enemy that isnt an npc invader

I don't do PVP only coop now and again, I don't know what's considered scummy. its interesting to read the comments about this spear and frenzy incantations in general, its obvious invaders or duelists spamming frenzy incants or this weapon art are not exactly popular, but a couple of comments say it has limited use as most enemies apart from those of a humanoid build are immune to madness and deathblight, I know that is true, but I've been using frenzied burst and flame of frenzy since I found them, they are far from being useless on non human enemies or bosses. with my build and playstyle their true worth is the stagger from flame of frenzy, it stops most enemies I've used it on dead in their tracks, off the top of my head I can't remember any enemy or boss poise through it to hit me, apart from one or two that seem able to poise through anything anyway, and the fire damage it does is a nice bonus. frenzied burst has been very useful as well, I like the range it has for sniping and I can do more damage with it than a bow. so whether they proc madness or not means nothing to me. a good example is the erdtree and putrid avatars, they really don't like being hit with either, with the right talismans and physik mix, both can do big damage to them, it levels the playing field a little considering how hard they hit, I'm not looking to start an argument on the merits or otherwise of the frenzy incantations, I only commented here because a new player reading this might think them not worth the FP or memory slot if they only work on humanoid enemies.

Fromsoft team: what if we made a spear in this game that could do the same and gives people in pvp a status effect that damage them, and stuns them for a sec or 3.

                                                            Miyazaki: that's a great idea!

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

I’ll explain the hate for this weapon.
                                                                      1. Dual wielding equals pretty much a instant madness proc and since spears have no cool down for running R1 attacks people just spam that move the entire time till they land one or two and madness stun you and kill you.

                                                                      2. Madness procs way too fast just like the other status effects. If they’re are two people with these spears and madness spells it’s a no win situation. Sniper madness spell, madness water fountain spell, hitting through phantoms and taking no madness buildup equal broken weapon and build.

                                                                      3. Madness procs even if you miss attacks. This is awful because the madness will build regardless of skill and when they’re are two madness builds that can’t proc each other with sniper eye spell, it’s just nonsense meta garbage.

                                                                      4. This spear with finger print shield is just straight up scum. Finger print shield is broken beyond belief and this spear make it scum tier level, and before you go “that not what I do” it doesn’t matter because many people do all these things I just listed. And win. And t-bag, because they don’t realize how bad they are without this broken build.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Thundercloud form is a good counter to this spear's weapon art. Requires you to tank some damage, but the recovery is sufficiently long that if you just press L2 rather than hold it you should land the attack.

                                                                        • Anonymous

I'm seeing no mention of this anywhere so I'll say it. The skill on this weapon is inconsistent and tricky to land with full dmg. The lingering flames are easy but the weapon does a burst of damage that wont usually hit of you hit them point blank. The sweet spot is the slightest bit further than where the spear hits the ground. Also you can aim it to the side a bit and just hit the right or left where the side "finger" flame trails come out and that also works for full dmg.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Had a friend drop me one so I could dual wield in ng and holy ****. This thing is disgusting. The ash of war straight up one shots lower level players sure to the madness proc and fire tick damage. The running L1 when dual wielding and an absurdly good AOW makes this weapon a monster in pvp

                                                                            • Anonymous

I have no problem going against someone with this in a 1v1 duel. However, this thing is annoying in invasions!

                                                                              • Anonymous

I think this weapon has the same bug as astel's wing, that when you use golden vow the ticking fire part deals no damage, I could be wrong and would like to know if anyone has had the same problem.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Been using this on my first Faith build, Dex/Fth focused around fire spells of all kinds.

It's a really solid option for PvE: You can get it quite early if you're able to down Vyke, and while Madness doesn't affect the majority of enemies, anything that is 'Tarnished' (Any NPC with a name that attacks you, including invaders and Volcano Quest NPCs) is vulnerable to Madness which makes it very easy to take these enemies out. Besides that, with a proper Fire build the skill can do high amounts of damage, with a lingering damage effect in a wide area.

Outside of that you get the general benefits of a Great Spear: Long range (although shorter than other GSpears), flexible moveset and strong charged R2s. Perfectly usable in PvE...

But of course PvP is where it shines.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Very overused weapon in PvP, I think I see it around as often as RoB and its not surprising given that madness, a very powerful status effect, will build up even if you miss your hit.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Funny, when the game came out this was pretty well balanced for pvp if you ignore status build up on ghost hits. The weapon art was checked by having a recovery just long enough to punish if your opponent did this in a really bad spot. But of course they had to dumb it down for by removing this window altogether so less sophisticated players can be indefinitely annoying. Weird that Lords Aid doesn’t cure madness but I guess there’s lore reasons for that maybe?

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                            • For those of you who like using this weapon, feel free to keep doing so. My general rule of thumb is if someone’s madness buildup proc doesn’t do any damage, it means they technically dodged it, so I don’t punish them for it. I suggest you do the same, otherwise you’d be taking advantage of a bug. Technically using any statuses at all is taking advantage of a bug, but I’m not gonna say don’t use any weapon with status buildup. Just be fair when wielding this weapon, if your opponent goes mad without taking damage, they deserve to not be punished for it. If they take damage, however, it means you proc’d it on a hit and you may punish accordingly.

                                                                                              • There has to be a version of this weapon in-game that’s unobtainable that Vyke wields in his Evergaol fight. He can buff it with lightning and it doesn’t apply madness. If other removed or unobtainable weapons/armors are on the wiki, maybe that weapon should be included too.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Surprisingly really good for PvE even though it's primarily a PvP weapon. Faith builds have the issue of a large portion of bosses being very resistant to holy damage so that makes a lot of weapons not great for late game bosses. It has a great and very varied moveset, including regular thrusts, charges that hit 2-3 times, and wide slashes, and the ash of war does a ton of damage as well as lingering damage over time. By far the best faith scaling spear for PvE.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I guess that's just Vyke being Vyke again.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

I don't think it would need to, but it would make sense

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

Because of this, even though you can't customize it's Ash of War, it has a lot of versatility for PVP or NPC invaders, especially with the added pressure of Madness buildup.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

This can be countered very easily by parrying, or simply not trying to roll immediately.

It has the same model but it doesn't inflict Frenzy, has different visual effects for its weapon art, and it's able to be buffed with "Vyke's Dragonbolt." I've been looking all over for any information and have found nothing so far.

Enjoy!

Fixed a bug that prevented "Edgar the Revenger" and "Festering Fingerprint Vyke" from invading after defeating all the bosses in Liurnia of the Lake.

Atleast you could play against that by removing your clothes. Two of these in each hand is absolute cancer and does ruin the game. I Fg isn’t even think scraping spear ruined the game, but this…? Who designed the madness status effect?
