Whetstone Knife is a Whetblade in Elden Ring. The Whetstone Knife can add new battle arts and affinities to weapons. Key Items in Elden Ring include a wide variety of items found in specific locations or are given by related NPCs, which are used to unlock areas, quests, and to further progress the game's story.
Whetstone with a cipher inscription, made to look like a small knifeblade.
Allows the use of ashes of war at a site of grace to bestow new battle arts and affinities to armaments as skills.
The battle arts and affinities will depend on the ashes of war used.
Whetstone Knife Location in Elden Ring
Where to find Whetstone Knife:
- Found in the southeastern area of Gatefront Ruins. There is a set of stairs leading to a small room underground where a treasure chest can be found. Inside the chest is the Whetstone Knife and Ash of War: Storm Stomp. [Map link]
- Can also be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks
for
500 Runes after beating two Shardbearers.
Elden Ring Whetstone Knife Use
- Players can use the Whetstone Knife to add Skills to Weapons.

I ended up killing Rennala before finding it. After defeating her it was available for purchase at Twin Maiden Husks via RTH. I haven't at this point set foot in Altus.

havent been able to use this item. is it in ashes of war menu?
This can be bought from the Twin Maiden Husks if you haven’t found it before reaching Altus Plateau.
Additionally, finding it after it has been added to the shop removes it from the shop, so you can only obtain one.
As of the most current patch (1.04), this will be available for purchase from the Twin Maiden Husks after some condition is met. Speculation is that acquiring a Whetblade item before obtaining the knife from the Gatefront ruins is the trigger; I will test this to be certain. The character I had it happen to did pick up the Iron Whetblade without having the knife, so it's definitely a possibility.

Can you only change a weapon's affinity? I want to keep my weapon's original skill, but improve its affinity.

i have this item in my inventory, yet i cannot change my ash of war at a grace. i must visit the blacksmith at the table area to do so.
After having tested multiple theories, the conclusion I finally came up with: This will be sold by the Twin Maiden Husks if you acquire two remembrances without picking it up. Godrick/Rennala on one character, Godrick/Radahn on another, and Radahn/Rykard on a third all had this same result. Visiting Altus Plateau does not trigger it, Grand Lift doesn't, going to Liurnia doesn't, etc.
Realistically, by the time you trigger this as available for purchase, you'll get the second talisman pouch and access to Leyndell.
