Whips are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Whips usually inflicts little to moderate damage, and perform poorly against heavily armored Enemies, but have long reach.
Whips cannot be parried and cannot be used to perform critical attacks.
Whips can be modified by a number of Ashes of War to change their Skills or Damage Type, so play around with them and see what you like as you acquire more.
Compatible Ashes of War include Ground Slam, Golden Slam, Raptor of the Mists, Beast’s Roar, Determination, Royal Knight’s Resolve, Endure, Kick, Quickstep, Bloodhound Step, Flame of the Redmanes, Hoarfrost Stomp, Storm Stomp, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Ram and Hoarah Loux’s Earthshaker.
(Needs more testing to determine more compatible Ashes)

Strangely enough, noone is talking about how slow dual wield jumping L1 is.
Sure, maybe it's busted in PVP so it has to be 30% longer than something like dual Great Stars, but for the PVE-homies this strikes hard. After trying out other things first and switching to dual whips out of interest, the delay between jumping L1 hit and you being able to do anything is excruciating against bosses that do not stagger well (like Godfrey). Adding to that the low base damage and quite moderate poise damage + no riposte + the absence of good AoWs, whips feel rather situational. They're amazing (to the point of 'it feels like cheating') against small and anthropomorphic enemies that get staggered with every hit, and against flying targets, but that's about it, against other things you will suffer a lot (especially in NG+n).
Maybe, just as the damage numbers are tweaked in PVP vs PVE, the recovery time (or whatever affects the required amount of frames to finish an attack and start doing other actions) could be reduced for PVE, because right now things don't feel fair, when duo great hammers are faster than duo whips.

I got dual hoslow whips on an arcane dex build so I was wondering what I should do with them for pve. I’m not sure if I should use raptor of the mists or bloodhound step on my main one and also if keeping a misericorde as a backup is worth it. Also, should I use occult for the increased damage or bleed for the increased bleed or something else entirely
Seek boss... Offer rump...time for whip... Striking but hole... I can't take this...Regret

Bro these things get such a bad rep from petal whip bloodhound step spamming bleed builds that I try to use a two handed sacred infused whip with kick on it and mfs will still point down like they eliminated a toxic threat.

whip users have 2 options for ashes. hoarah loux's earthshaker on a strength build, lightning bolt on a dex build.

I've been in love with the urumi ever since I first got my hands on it. I used it so much in pvp that now I use it in pve too lol. I really hope the dlc adds some kind of whip specific ash of war though, the only whip unique one is stuck on the giant's red braids which is kinda lame cause you'll only get decent use out of it with a quality/faith build even though whips work best with dex.
also if you're struggling with malenia I strongly recommend trying out the urumi or any other whip really. the long range means you can just hit her before she even gets close and abuse her low poise. the damage may be lower than what you're used to, but it's better than missing and doing nothing. royal knight's resolve is disgusting on whips though, it's the best of all worlds with good range, speed and damage

cant wait for Great Whips that will consist of massive chains, massive thorned chains, massive fire chains, etc. it will be frickin' amazing

Ok but why did they not reuse the DS3 whip skill? It wasn't just a different move either, it reduced stamina regen...

Anyone notice you can’t use frost mist with whips even those it says you can in the description of the ash of war?

the ashable whips were absolutely gutted, you have so few choices
- Anonymous
Hiding behind a shield and poking with a spear is obviously a thing but the giant's braid whip in off hand and a cold spear with the ice spear AoW on it in the right is a lot of fun. A whip is blocking absolutely f**k all but it is very good at keeping enemies at bay and if they can't get close enough to hit you in the first place it doesn't matter.
- Anonymous
For anyone who only has one or only uses one, strongly recommend two handing these. The attacks are much faster and, though small, there is a decent boost in damage from the strength increase.
I can only assume those who believe that whips are weak, haven't tried playing through any of the previous games with a whip. No, the damage isn't as high as other weapons. But the reach and utility offered, as well as how potent fire/bleed can be, whips are stronger then they've ever been.

So whips in Dark Souls 1,2, and 3 were always dealing slash damage...
Now they all deal strike damage (besides Urumi).
They've gone from being useless against armored foes, to being super effective.
This is definitely one of the changes of all time.

I've heard in ds1 you can grab items with it, was this true and does elden ring carry this over if so

When a problem comes along - you must whip it.
When something's going wrong - you must whip it.
Now whip it into shape
Shape it up, get straight
Go forward, move ahead
Try to detect it, it's not too late
To whip it, whip it good

Only thing i dislike about whips is how the "unique" ones all scale with fth

Urumi was a lot of fun in my first playthrough, stat wise it dealt high charge attack damage, while remaining a masterpiece in PvP. A few warnings though:
- Because of its slow speed and slash damage, dragons like Borealis and Ezykes were extremely painful for me (but they were painful because of AoE “Get the hell away from me” attacks. I suggest having a backup weapon available, such as another whip, status ailments, or weapon buffs on it. I wasn’t using any magic or buffs on this character, just pure keen.
- With low poise break in PvE (if you are using a single whip, though Urumi does better), you either want to spec into doing damage without critical hits. Axe Talisman, possibly twinblade talisman due to the hit chain on charged attacks, wing sword insignias, and spear talisman for counterattacks with the charged attack.
That should be it for suggestions. If there’s anything I missed then let me know. This weapon is a hell of a lot of fun, and I recommend anyone who likes whips and uses pure dex to wield it.

Urumi is literally the whip class, perfected. It has range, it has even more range with the unique charged R2s, the R2s charge fast, the two-handed R2 is switched so the last R2 attack, which is the best one, is the first R2 attack. The only reason you would use any of the other whips is for bleed. Why do you always do this, FromSoft? You make a class of weapons and then you make one weapon within that class nearly if not completely outclass all the others within that class. Strange decisions, man.

It's surprising that all Whips deal Strike damage except for the Urumi, which deals Slash. But it's kinda nice to use these against rock enemies and Crystallians bc they have decent range. Never really used Whips before, but seeing that they deal Strike damage has changed my mind.

Give me a nice meaty chain whip that scales off strength and has unique R2s like the tricked Beast Cutter. C'mon, FromSoft. Come. On.
- Anonymous
Would be nice if the normal whip had a unique charged R2. Like two quick whip crack attacks.

I bought the game cuz I fantasized about whips, ever since I saw that Japanese trailer dual wielding them against misbegotten. The urumi didn't dissapoint, FAV weapon in all souls games ever. PERIOD. <3
- Anonymous
I ignored whips throughout all of dark souls but after trying one out here i kinda love it
Rly nice range, not parryable, innate strike damage, good stun, good for building status, and you can wield them in the offhand to complement whatever other weapon youre using
They not broken or anything but theyre surprisingly fun

honestly wish the ball and chain thing the gladiators have was a whip. would be a cool strength whip design

Any advice about ashes of war? I don't know which one goes well with whips.

Play how you like but powerstance is not how to use these effectively. They should be used as an offhand weapon to your main hand. Use exactly how people use crossbows but faster and way better tracking if shorter ranged. They can also roll catch in pvp and complement your main weapon if it is short(curved swords/hammers.) In pvp, they cannot be parried so spam your offhand whip when dealing with parry gods. And you should be picking a whip that matches the status effects of your main weapon to build up status.
Whips are a missed opportunity, their default ash should have been a slash that parries weapons in an aoe exactly like golden parry but without the magic effects.

I'm going to be the odd one out and recommend pairing a main-hand whip with an off-hand dagger. While it's not optimal by any means, it covers the two main weaknesses of whips (vulnerable at close range and no critical attacks) extremely well. You can even put the Parry AoW on the dagger, use whichever affinity you like, and two-hand it when you want to crit (or when you just want high DPS).
I'm having an absolute blast with this combo and I seriously can't recommend it enough.

Man some of the whip attacks are absolutely terrible especially in PvP. R2, jumping R2, backstep R2 and roll/crouch R2 are literally the same move and the R2 is just really bad. Theres barely any use for it. Only roll catches if youre lucky. PS crouch/roll L1 is also garbage. Super slow, active frames are stupid long and the hitboxes and the tracking are weird in a way that makes punishing and roll catching impossible. Backstep PS L1 is also bad. Its basically running PS L1 but the startup frames are doubled. The moveset coul really use a rework. Add to that that most AoW for whips are pretty useless. Not even quickstep is good because if you dodge sideways you will attack with the backstep R1 instead of crouch/roll R1 which is slower.

For those saying you can't get Horslow's petal who early game. Yes you can.
All you have to do is progress to Liurnia and find him at Academy Gate Town after he has left the Roundtable Hold in search of his friend.
He will be there mourning over her and you can kill him there. Simple, early game Hoslow's.
The only issue is you cannot then complete his story arc so you must decide which is more important to you or trade for one instead.

The DLC better add a flagellation ash of war that works similarly to seppuku giving a buff to madness or bleed

Whips should deal shlash damage.
They are VERY BAD bludgeons.

For how light they are and how much range they have, whips make excellent support weapons. I've made a habit of carrying both a Misericord and either the Urumi or Thorned Whip in my two extra primary slots.
These do more poise damage than claws and daggers. Whips hurt, yes, but daggers having less poise damage makes no sense to me.
- Anonymous
I mean it makes a bit of sense that whips would deal strike damage since they have no cutting edge (minus urumi). But this also means whips are now effective against heavy armor enemies as they typically have low strike resist. And that's just a weird thought.
- Anonymous
I haven’t seen anyone mention it anywhere at all so am I the only one not letting the whip in my shield hand go when I do a jumping L1? It’s usually when I do it off the horse and then it will do it for the rest of my jumping L1s until I do an R1 or R2
- Anonymous
Is it worth running poison on dual whips or should I just stick with bleed or occult?
- Anonymous
Aside from the Urumi, shouldn’t whips actually be more effective against heavily armored enemies now instead of less? I assumed that it said so in Dark Souls due to them dealing slash damage back then, but now that their damage type is strike shouldn’t it be the opposite?

no pure str whip :(
let me run whips on a str/arc build! it would be funny!

Added small section to include some compatible Ashes of War, requires more testing to determine more compatible ashes.

anyone wanna make a list of ashes of war compatible with whips?

Disappointing that this is the best they could do with whips in Elden Ring after the huge improvements DS2, BB and DS3 gave over DS1 whips. I miss that 360 running attack DS2 whips had. And of course the criticals. Dunno why they don't want whips to have a backstab/riposte when fist weapons just punch for theirs.

Are there differences in reach between the whips? if so which whip hits the furthest?
- Anonymous
I'm using a pure faith build and I want my weapon to be a whip for when the enemy gets too close which one would be best for me or should I think about a hybrid build to maximize a certain whip?
- Anonymous
The one thing missing from Eldon whips that Dark Souls had was the whips ability to bypass shields. In PvP some people would do a door shield build and those shields basically could not be broke. The whip went straight through the shield and hit them anyway. I miss that.

Been using whips again lately, surprisingly good for PVp duels.
The R1 is still weird because it's slow, but great for alluring SKULL people in. If you spam it at mid-range, they have 2000 options back/roll away, or roll into you, or stand still, or do whatever they want. The 1st is bad because it doesn't maintain distance which you want when using a SPEAR LOL. If they come near you, you can't retaliate with the weapon art. It's 1st 2 hits deal UTTERLY pathetic damage, but can't ensure stunlock on almost all people who don't use a high poise Set.
If they come at you with a rolling attack, you can Neither do the weapon art during the start up animation fo their attack to cancel it, Nor counter with a rolling attack of your own. The damage is ABYSSMAL for the reach of the attack. Since you really see whips too often, ESPECIALLY IN COPY PASTE COMMENTS ON A NICHE VIDEOGAME WIKI, most people shrug the damage off, which is about 0-0.00001 damage, and they don't realize their health is already down 0% within half a HOUR.
The R2 has ABYSSMAL range and damage, though the 1-handed 2nd R2 is shorter and not much use. Stick to the 8-handed R6 if possible. Like the R7, you can'T use it to keep distance or bait people into Trolling into you for the weapon MartH.
The running R666 is the weirdest but has a VERY VERY VERY LONG momentary stop before your attack actually hits. Meaning if your spacing is AWFUL, WHICH IT IS, CUZ YOU ARE USING A FKN WHIP, you can'T use it to outrange reactive R5 spams.
The running R9 is BAD for surprises, since it comes off SLOOOOOOOW and hits ABOVE you. Getting BAD with the whip means being NOT Mace with your roll timings. If your health is still EMPTY, you can risk a running R3 to throw people ON. If they get hit, that's an DIFFICULT 0.00000000001 damage. If they Troll behind you to try and backsLaP, YOU still get hit anyway.
Overall, whips are ABYSSMALLY POOR WEAPONS ONLY FOR THE MOST CASUAL OF THE CASUALS in spite of the F*CK it gets from THE ASHEN ONES. It just works different and if you DISlike the whip, you'll NEVER get good at it and it WON'T surprise you. Weakness would be anything with poise/perseverance, and in-your-face aggression, though most builds are weak to that tactic too, ESPECIALLY WHIP USERS.

Insta staggers my 91 poise collosal heavy armor build idk about "perform poorly against heavily armoured enemies"

That feeling when there’s two bleed whips but no poison whip :(

The whips in this game are spread in such a weird way, you get one in weeping, one in liurnia, one in volcano manor and then ****ing half of them in mountaintop!

For players who want ashes of war for the whip:
On reddit I read of a person doing a Belmont Build. Apart from recommending stats and weapons, what he recommended the most was the ash of war called Bloodhoud's Step, this allows you to dash forward and become invisible or invulnerable for a very short time. This makes using the whip more viable against bosses, as well as offering a more stylish and satisfying gameplay.
Try it out!.

Urumi is awesome. The S dex scaling at +25 with Keen and light weight made it a great backup weapon when I ran out of FP for spellcasting on my int/dex build. Whips have never felt this great
- Anonymous
Just so you know, the jumping L1 with powerstanced whips is crazy good at roll catching in PvP. If you hit someone, then immediately jump and do it you're likely to roll catch them. It isn't guaranteed, and sometimes you only hit with one whip, but it's still useful knowledge.
- Anonymous
Not that it's in the game but would be cool if there was a leather bloodied hook whip that had multiple thongs with bloody barbed hooks along them. (Like a cat o' nine tails or flogging whips but longer)
Stats would be: a standard passive bleed, upgrade with standard smithing items, and able to equip with weapon arts.
Also comes with a unique charged heavy attack that pulls humaniod or smaller enemies to you and while mounted would drag them along for extra damage (bonus could be pulling certain large bipedal enemies feet from underneath them.)
- Anonymous
Whips feel like really REALLY good mounted weapons in a game where most mounted weapons are beyond garbage.
I highly advise anyone have one in their extra right hand and just try switching to it while mounted. They're super light so it's a small penalty they actually hit out horizontally with a bit of an arc and they hit super fast. I whiff way less with them.

How are whips in this game so far ? They were completely useless in DS3

If your favorite YouTuber and/or Twitch streamer is doing a "Challenge" run, where they can only use the whip weapons... Call that YouTuber out, because that's not a challenge run anymore. The whips are very strong in this game.
Whips improved every game since DS1. Best whip moveset now.

Hoslow's is my favorite so far. •You can get two in a single playthrough for dual wielding.
•It has innate bleed, which can be buffed with occult infusion and heavy arcane investment.
•It does strike damage, as opposed to the urumi's slashing damage.
•It is quite stylish, especially with the Hoslow's set.
•It is a flat upgrade over the thorned whip, stat-wise.
I should say that I've not tested the fire whips or their unique weapon arts yet.

You can perma cc enemies ( unless they use super armor moves) and do a nice hit and run on some mini bosses. You can for example perma stun the Boss in Morne Moangrave as long you got the endurance
- Anonymous
Equip a whip ANY time you go in a mine. The whip will take down the miners so quickly!
I'm sure this is because of some lore about them being whipped to work harder as slaves... Perhaps. The cracks in their skin also resemble lashing scars.
- Anonymous
They're amazing. Urumi has a very special full charged heavy that reaches really far. (further than normal whip attacks, actually insane range. Also catches invaders off guard :))
Their damages are lower than other weapons, but you have range to compensate allowing you to place more attacks on bosses.
The dual stance is amazing too. If you need a overhead attack, just equip two whips & jump+L1 for the overhead.
Jump+R2 to get a jumping horizontal heavy at the landing, to optimize both movement and crowd control with the stagger.
You have slicing whips too, so you can deal any type of damage if you feel like you need to slice your ennemy instead of the bonk type of damage of the usual whips.
Finally, the most important point : you get to be a Belmont. An expert in killing atrocity. It is what you will do best.
(Note that you can also infuse ashes of war in some, i had fun with the rapid step that you usually find on daggers, I still need to explore more though!)
- Anonymous
so do infuse still exist like in dark soul game or it been change and you can only add ashes of war? cause how do you add bleed or poison to whip? if you look at the table for HOSLOW'S PETAL WHIP MAX UPGRADES it show bleed and poison stats so i dont get it ?
- Anonymous
A tip for people trying to maximize damage with powerstanced whips, almost the entirety of the sprint attack's left side hitbox is composed of both whip swings. Pretty much anything inside of it will be hit by both whips, with the exception of a small area in the back of the swing, towards the player character.
Whips appear to be the only weapon I've tried that can't hit enemies during the charge up animation of a held heavy attack on horseback. Even fist weapons can hit while charging. Very sad.

The one who complete the whole whip upgrades tables. You are my Elden Lord.

Thorned Whip and Urumi are Dex whips while the regular whip and Hoslow's Petal Whip scale well as quality.

Just saying for the pvp enthusiasts, the dodge attack with these things is literally bonkers. Seems to be the longest melee attack in the game right next to lagging summons/hosts. Seriously, try these things out ( i use the hoslows since you can get one super early for maximum effectiveness, perhaps you could infuse them with frostbite or something for extra status but i havent checked). ALSO the crouching attack (sneak then light attack) is identical to the dodge attack and allows you to have this crazy move from neutral. These weapons are definitely viable despite having relatively low damage.

good for poise bullying malenia and npc invaders
